ABRAHAM LINCOLN

abraham lincoln

ABRAHAM LINCOLN When brains, courage, strength of character, and love of country was more important than spin doctors, questionable ethics and love of the all mighty dollar. He would never be elected today.

(Abraham Lincoln)

He’d probably run as third part candidate anyway.

hmmm, lets see what was going on then…. oh yes, the war between the states – not a war of foreign soil, but one in our own yard. which because of armed insurrection gives the federal government the legal right to declare martial law. which he didn’t do, could have, but didn’t. except maybe in specific locations. there was a lot more control, constitution ignoring events during wwii and few bat an eye at those or at the maccarthy inquisition that followed, why is that?

      • Wheres says:

Lincoln suspended Habius Corpus, which is why he is now a controversial figure. Whenever someone spoke out against the Union, they would be thrown in jail (If they were considered a big enough threat).

His first term and the onset of the war were entirely governed by politics and not by strength of character, etc. He was not anti-slavery until he had gotten elected for a second term and did not need to worry about re-election.

Americans like to romanticize the Civil War. The country was just as corrupt as it is now. People had the same motivations and Lincoln was no exception.

He was president over a turbulent time in our Country’s past. He did take major steps towards freeing slaves.

It is important to remember that only a tiny minority of the North believed in equality of races. Abolitionists believed in ending slavery, the vast majority did not believe that the races were equal. Slavery was seen as a sin on the part of the country, and if the country wanted to prosper it had to be ended. That has nothing to do with equality.

A side note: The “no third term” rule was placed into effect after FDR, who served two and a half terms. Before that it was simply a matter of being a gentleman and stepping aside. Lincoln was not legally bound to do so.

          • Wheres says:

            Further Side Note:

Most presidents did not try to win consecutive terms. It was common place to win one year and simply not run in the next election. Politics have changed quite a bit.

Talk about Habus Corups, George W. got shot of that too, has Obama put it back yet?

        • LincolnIsEvil says:

A famous quote from Lincoln on slavery:

“My paramount object in this struggle is to save the Union, and is not either to save or to destroy slavery. If I could save the Union without freeing any slave I would do it, and if I could save it by freeing all the slaves I would do it; and if I could save it by freeing some and leaving others alone I would also do that. What I do about slavery, and the colored race, I do because I believe it helps to save the Union; and what I forbear, I forbear because I do not believe it would help to save the Union. I shall do less whenever I shall believe what I am doing hurts the cause, and I shall do more whenever I shall believe doing more will help the cause.”

I think it’s quite clear from that that he really didn’t care about whether slavery continued or not, and sure as hell didn’t think blacks deserved equal rights. He ONLY cared about preserving the Union, which is why he was willing to leave slavery, and suspend constitutionally guaranteed rights to do so.

          • TJ says:

That’s really not true. The problem with quoting the interweb is that it gives you no context. If you read a biography about Lincoln (I recommend the one by Stephen B Oates) you will find that Lincoln was in fact opposed to slavery and wanted to abolish it since he was a child, BUT was not willing to abolish it in a way that would destroy the union AND was aware of the simple political reality that if he said up front that he wanted to abolish slavery he would never have been elected. He said things like the above quote because it was a political necessity, not because that’s what he personally believed.

Really what Lincoln wanted was to abolish slavery gradually in a way that would allow the slave states to adapt economically as slavery ended but the war pushed his hand.

      • LincolnIsEvil says:

What the hell does WW2 have to do with Lincoln? FDR was an evil bastard too. McCarthyism was nothing more than a modern era witch hunt used to eliminate political enemies. Yes, somehow Lincoln’s actions are justified because other presidents did equally evil things?

Violations of the constitution are violations of the constitution and are sufficient to say that he did not have strength of character, love of country, or ethics.

        • Default User says:

I think your previous post in which you give a lengthy quote by lincoln saying he would do whatever it took to keep the nation whole would be in direct conflict with the statement that “he did not have…love of country…”

    • feisty says:

Not taking sides in the whole good prez v. bad prez debate

That aside, this meme is just wrong. Brains, courage, strength of character was NOT more important than spin, ethics, etc. Lincoln was barely electable then and was defeated more times than he was elected.

      1832 – Defeated for legislature
      1834 – Elected to legislature
      1838 – Defeated for speaker
      1840 – Defeated for elector
      1843 – Defeated for Congress
      1846 – Elected for Congress
      1848 – Defeated for Congress
      1855 – Defeated for Senate
      1856 – Defeated for Vice-President
      1858 – Defeated for Senate
      1860 – Elected President

      • TJ says:

You’re right on. Try googling info about his presidential campaign. The mud slinging and political spin from his election puts what we have today to shame!

        • Jeremy says:

Indeed. Lincoln held a series of debates against Stephen Douglas (who he lost to) debating their thoughts on the issues of the day, and that was an almost unheard of idea. The norm was that presidential candidates wouldn’t even ACKNOWLEDGE difficult issues until they were elected, much less have televised debates about them.

    • Igloo McCoy says:

Yeah, he didn’t do anything right! Emancipation Schmancipation!

      • LincolnIsEvil says:

You DO realize that the Emancipation Proclamation didn’t actually free any slaves, right? It only freed slaves in rebelling states. If you don’t believe me, go read the wording yourself. Thus, slaves that remained in West Virginia, Maryland, and DC weren’t freed and, well, why the hell would a Confederate citizen release slaves based on what the Union President decreed?

The slaves weren’t freed until after Lincoln was assassinated and a constitutional amendment was passed. Learn your history, you ignorant moron.

  2. M.A.D.MikE says:

“and love of the all mighty dollar” – oh rly? Google the reason he was assassinated, don’t be an ignorant douche.

    • Ben says:

John Wilkes booth was a crazy southern sympathist who was pissed at lincoln because of the emancipation proclamation. it had nothing to do with money.

      • JWB was standing in a long line of people who wanted to do what he did. Calling JWB a sypathist is a way of dismissing criticism of Abraham Lincoln.

        • pssvr says:

          Right on!

The historical circumstances surrounding the Conquest of the Confederacy (the legitimate term for what some of you may call “The Civil War) have been tremendously obscured by the New Left. Indeed, this is no surprise, since the oppressors of freedom have a twofold advantage here. First, they succeeded militarily (and history is written by the victors). Second, they have a bountiful array of moral superiority trump cards to play against, you know, facts, and stuff.

The idea that the re-establishment of Carolinian sovereignty could be based on anything other than an absolute desire to exert tyranny over another race is unspeakable in modern political discourse. We can handily ignore the fact that the politicians who initiated the secession expressed concerns that Lincoln was a tyrant with no respect for state sovereignty (remember that union of sovereign states?) and no concern for individual liberty. Of course, we have to also ignore that these allegations were absolutely true (remember declaring martial law on his own union and suspending writ of habeas corpus?).

It matters little to these ignorant, left-leaning “academics” that Lincoln vastly expanded the role of the president and affirmed, unconstitutionally, that the United States were not, in fact, United States, but actually Submissive States. Any history professor will tell you that, pre-war, the term “United States” was held in the vernacular to be plural, whereas post-war, it is held to be singular. What they won’t tell you is that that is EXACTLY why the South chose to get its ass out of that sinking ship, and rightly so.

          • *sarcasm* But you know secess must be swept away by the hand of God, like the jews of old.

From what I’ve seen so far, nit-picking is a favorite pastime of many of the posters, as is demonstrating one’s superiority to those they disagree with.

                      • True, though you will often find the regulars do it just for fun, knowing that the rest of us know it’s just a sense of humor. Almost mocking the trolls.

Typically such trolls are apt to be picked on in their high school and the popular kids won’t let them sit at their table. Like all trolls, they bring their frustration to the internet. Mostly known throughout the PK Serengeti as the “sock puppet, sock master, or the preferred: fvckweasel.”
Most notably identified by it’s similar typing styles throughout “persona progression”, and it shared MO between “personas”.
Usually the schizo troll causes medium irritation much like that of a rash, or an eyelash in the eye. But like these common mild disturbances, applying cream or plucking the troll out of your eye and dismissing them usually solves the dilemma.
In extreme instances, usually after the schizo troll has spread itself thin between personas, it will start to develop, personal abhorrent feelings towards specific regular members within the community. Oftentimes the schizo troll will form a newly evolved persona strictly for harassing targeted members of the PK kingdom.
                          Fascinating….
When we come back, we’ll be observing how an actual PK Schizo troll operates and interacts on the board with regular posters… Stay Tuned to PK Animal Kingdom!

The theories behind this are varied, but the most commonly accepted one is that he feels the need to mark his prey by mocking other trolls to scare them off. Other theories include attempting to appear as one of the regulars, a wolf in sheep’s clothing so to speak. This theory is often dismissed as a load of crap.

I see how it works now. Frequent posters can point out that others are “uninformed” or “ignorant”, and it’s fine. New posters who mildly rebuke them without personal attacks are called douchebags, trolls and assholes. Ad hominem is fine, as long as it’s used against a troll or a new poster. New posters are automatically considered to be trolls and are immediately bitten for trespassing upon private property. I will admit that justacarolinian would not like my political views.

                        • I could care less if you like my political views or not. You post was an attempted smack, and one that failed miserably.
Quit the “I’m not a regular” whining, as you are as welcome as anyone to post. Just try to be be honest when you do, or you will get called on it.
My comment informing that it was a quote was simply informing those who would be unaware of that fact. And yes, most of the people who read here skim over things too fast and wouldn’t notice the quote marks. I was trying to cut off the poop storm that some would try to initiate.

I certainly don’t agree with the political views of everyone here (To agree that everyone here is right would be a near impossible feat, I’m not sure how anyone could accomplish it since there are so many differing view points) but have no trouble getting along with the regulars.

This is an excellent way to describe what occurred. However, I’d say there was no attempt at the time to hide it, and I don’t see any effort now to hide information about Lincoln’s position on the matter, as represented in his “House Divided” speech.

People disagreed (loudly) then as to whether it is best that we be a union of separate sovereign states, or a single nation. People now are hardly aware of the distinction, but it is far from a forgone conclusion that we should be one or the other. To some people, it seems obvious, but just because they say so isn’t sufficient for it to be true.

    • The Truth says:

      **Round of Applause**

Well done for someone to state the truth about Lincoln at last. His presidency was founded upon money given to him by the Industrial Magnates of the North. It was these same Magnates that stopped Lincoln from doing what he should have done in the first place. The war wasn’t fought over Slavery. Slavery was a minor reason behind the war. The real reason is the South would have quite easily given up slavery (since very few Southerners could actually afford slaves) if they could by the machines the North had to harvest the cotton (and other crops.) However the South could only sell their crops to the North and the Northern Magnates would only give the South a piddling amount in exchange for their crops. Therefore the only way to make decent enough money to live on was to arrange trade with other countries themselves. (Which is why Britain got tied in with the South, as the South produced vast amounts of cotton which Britain could use in it’s factories.) However the Northern Magnates realising that if the South got the agreement to this then they would lose out on a. vast amounts of resources and b. vast amounts of profit. Therefore the Magnates forced Lincolns hand since they paid to put him into power, and Lincoln was forced to go to war to “protect the union”. However this and the “Slavery” issue were just lies put about by the victorious North to disguise the real reason the war was fought – over money and unethical treatment of the Southern farmers. Much like people saying that the Iraqi war was due to Oil rights not Weapons of Mass Destruction as the governments claim.

I was reading a biography of the Grimke’ sisters, prominent abolitionists at the time. And the abolitionists were not happy with Lincoln at all. For example, the emancipation proclamation was only effective on the confederate states.

      • *claps and cheers loudly* BRAVO

      • Wheres says:

        @ “The Truth”

Your post ignores the planter class.

It is true that the VAST majority of whites in the south owned no slaves at all. What is also true that those who controlled Southern Politics did own slaves, and they owned many.

Just like today, the majority of wealth in our country was held by a minority. That minority in the south were the “Planter Class” (large plantation owners). They controlled southern politics and the poor whites who did not own slaves, did not have a say.

Trying to use the number of southern slave holders, alone, is a great way to mislead people into believing your argument. Just because the majority did not own slaves does not mean they were the decision makers. They were in fact the poorest whites in the south with little to no power over politics. If you want to see where power in Politics always lays, follow the money trail. In this case it will lead you back to Southern Plantation owners.

As for the question of Britain supporting the South, it never would have happened. The British had long already outlawed slavery in all of their territories long before the south broke off from the North. Though it may have been a profitable proposition to recognize the south, British politics would never have allowed it, not to mention the majority of cotton was coming from other parts of the globe at this point.

No one person can say why the war was fought. The north would like to blame the south, and the south likes to blame the north. The reasons for people’s choice to go to war differs person to person.

Robert E. Lee was offered command of the Union Army. He refused. He did not refuse because he supported slavery. He refused because he understood that most of the war would be fought in his home state. He would rather defend his state than invade it. He could not turn his back on his neighbors.

The reasons for the war vary. No one reason caused it. There are many.

If you are interested in learning about the different point of views seen during the war I highly recommend reading “Killer Angels”. It does a very good job of showing the motivations of officers on both sides.

Sorry!! Wrong!! The British DID support the South, as stated, only because they had vital supplies of cotton. However they stopped support when slavery DID become an issue after the Battles of Gettysburg and Vicksburg when the South realised that they hadn’t a snowballs chance of winning the war and tried for a negotiated settlement (something akin to devolution.) However the Anti Slavery Lobby suddenly came into their own and opposed all attempts to deal with the South since they were nasty slaveowners (even though many Southerners didn’t have slaves) Why don’t YOU look it up (and I don’t mean in those American History books as they are written by the Victors (To quote 1984 – “Those who control the past, control the future; Those who control the future, control the present; Those who control the present, control the past.”) and wouldn’t give you the complete story. You need to look on the Internet for more information on this.

          • keithybabes says:

So just to be clear about this, you’d prefer if people looked at the internet, or a work of fiction, for the truth, rather than history books?

            • Vila Restal says:

From what I can make out, he is asking you to not take the history books as gospel as they are written by the Victors and it is in the Victors interests to say that they won whatever wars they fought for noble reasons. You need to look through vast numbers of books and the Internet before you can even scratch the surface of the truth. (If you’ve ever watched QI that is a perfect example of a widely held belief becoming fact – Apparently you can eat before swimming and a Strawberry isn’t a berry, but an apple and a Tomato is)

              • keithybabes says:

I love QI. And obviously I acknowledge the truism about history books. But somehow I would expect more impartiality in any American history book written, say, at a distance of 100 years from the Civil War. If the perceptions of the narrative on both sides of the divide have not moved away at least some distance from partisanship over the intervening period, then it’s a little worrying for this foreign observer.

                • Default User says:

What is this QI of which you speak? Though you have a point, the whole thing was a long time ago, there’s no one alive today who was alive then, much less held an active role on the events.

                  • keithybabes says:

It’s a British TV panel game hosted by Stephen Fry (Jeeves & Wooster?) where myths are debunked in an amusing way with dry wit and urbane banter.

                    • Default User says:

So a British version of myth busters? :)

                      • keithybabes says:

LOL. Yeah, Mythbusters minus the explosives! I don’t think I’ve ever seen a finer illustration of the difference between the Brits and the Americans.

            • anubis says:

ok first thank you to “The Truth”.
second there was no wmd’s in Iraq, the documents were forged and Dick brushed it under the rug. We have become a country were Bill Clinton can be impeached for having an affair and George W. Bush can go behind congresses back, as well as forge documents and not have a single charge against him. Roosevelt was almost constantly having an affair and no one gives a crap.
Third, you cant trust any one history book, you need to look at many and figure out the truth though all the bull. Best source of information is unedited first hand accounts. New does not count, its opinionated as shit.

Lastly and this has nothing to do with this thread mostly, far Right wing people are total hypocrites with there pro life stuff. They want to make it illegal to abort a baby if it will kill the mother even if the baby only has a 20% chance of survival. Personally I’d say that’s murdering the mother. And just to upset the kettle, go pro choice the world cant sustain this population growth rate any ways. Think about that one. And well your at it looks up some stuff about Norway(having to do with war and religion, and please when you do keep an open mind, they’re a hell of a lot more peaceful then we are.

              • anubis says:

oh and with the Norway thing, numbers are skewed because almost all of the population is signed into the church at birth and its a pain to get signed out with no real gain..

                • skrodal says:

I here you man, being a Norwegian I now what you’re talking about. Many are baptised, but at 15 we have this thing called “konfirmasjon” (confirmation), where people, nowadays, get’s to choose between a christian “konfirmasjon”, non-religious “konfirmasjon”, or not having one at all. I had a non-religious one but still have to deal with the state church at 18…

…but I’m not going to invade any oil country.

btw, Norway got all the oil we need in our own water. That’s the reason why we still aren’t a nation of alchoholic hilbillys.

                  • MadDogVAQ33 says:

I was in Stavanger in the early 80s and flew with Norwegian forces on NATO exercises.

Beautiful TALL women, wimpy ex-Viking men, EXPENSIVE booze and (argh!) pickled herring and cold duck eggs fried in sheep fat for breakfast.

According to the Norwegian women with whom I talked there are NO Vikings left in Norway, just sheep in men’s clothing. That’s a lot worse than alcoholic hillbillies.

Norwegians home-brew, get drunk and THEN go out clubbing, eat like food is a punishment, and the men don’t bathe near often enough.

                    Beautiful country, though.

              • MadDogVAQ33 says:

The CIA, the British MI-6, the French Surete, as well as the Russian and Israeli intelligence services ALL reported that Saddam possessed WMDs. They have stated so since the war there began.

Are you saying that ALL of those intelligence agencies “lied” and somehow that only you and your conspiracy theory nutbar compadres know the “real truth?”

The real truth is that you have not the foggiest idea what the President – W or any other – gets in his intelligence briefing every day. I do, because I was in the “Black Ops” world and my post-mission reports were used as part of that daily briefing.

When you get a clearance beyond (not above) Top Secret like I had, come and talk to me. Otherwise, quit your ignorant whining.

    • Dhoti the anti EWAdamsist says:

Oh, please. The Lost Cause is a convenient fiction a best, a cover-up at worst. Crack a history book sometime (one *without* a Rebel flag on the cover) and join the rest of us here in the 21st century. (Or even the later decades of the 20th. I’m not that picky.)

      • Yes, crack a history book open. See if you can find the subject of Jayhawker raids. Still unexplainable by even the most adamant Union man. By the way, what flag is the Rebel? The Confederate States of America went through a series of flags. I never heard them call one a rebel.

        • Dhoti the anti EWAdamsist says:

Don’t go all knee-jerk on me — all I was saying is that Michelle and “Truth” were being naively one-sided, and that based on my experience they sound like Lost Causers, which I think is basically crap. I don’t see how that implies that I painted a mural of Bleeding Kansas on my dining room ceiling.

And in all seriousness, if you don’t hear “Rebel flag” and think of the Dixie flag, or know what a Rebel yell is, then I’m going to have to insist that you move to Ohio.

          • I didn’t know Dixie had a flag. And I was just stimulating the thinking. And there is a lot more to the Jayhawker raids than Kansas. The worst of them were in South Carolina.
And I lived in Ohio for a short time (my ex wife is there) and the Mansfield area had fewer teeth than my grandmother.

          • I lived in Alabama for 6 long, long months. They HATE it being called the rebel flag for some reason. Confederate flag is okay. I don’t really understand the southern mindset, so I don’t really get either the obsession with the flag nor why confederate seems to be more PC than rebel.

            • Maybe some are tired of the ignorant excuse of labeling everyone in the south as racist everytime actual history is discussed. Anyone with an ounce of honesty in them can find just as much racism in the north.
A lot of the Confederate references are more along the lines of references to the corruption in the Federal govt, though it has been abused by the ignorant troll community on both sides of that argument.

            • ay dios mio EWAdams no es gracioso says:

What justa said. I’ve been here for more years than that and people (and I loathe rednecks) fly it because it WAS the state flag. Most are no more racist than anyone else.

            • DaDave says:

The reason is that the name of the flag is the Confederate Battle Flag. Maybe if you hadn’t been an ass and actually learned about Alabama and the South, you would know that.

Oh wait, that would mean actually having an open mind and not looking down your nose at people because of where they live, you bigot.

You just made an assumption about my state of mind and claimed it as reality.

And yet another stereotype is to try to force other people to leave or shut up if they disagree with you.

Now THAT is some actual information. But you can give it another try.

Go ahead, fire off some more keyword partisan blather. Maybe it will make you and a few other frothy idiots fell important.

      • Monkey Trainer says:

Ahh there he is – the die hard right wing, FOX supporter who has gobbled up so much of the propaganda, he has taken it as the new reality and is frothing at the mouth whenever he feels he need to defend his twisted personal reality.

And if you were able to actually comprehend what you read, you would notice that I am the Monkey Trainer, thus you would be the trained monkey. But I can easily forgive that seeing that your mind now automatically twists reality as you go along.

The only “partisan blather” is coming from people like you who have clearly given up on thinking for themselves and have decided it is easier to let others do it for them – which is why you seriously believe that Fox news ist just one station (again, forgivable, considering your mind is so used to twisting by now).

But, I am wasting my breath, some monkeys are simply not trainable. Here, have a banana, and go beat up the brown-looking monkeys and the ones who you think are homosexual. Or are actually using their brain as more than a stop sign for your finger when you are digging for buggers.

                    • While I agree with MT, I don’t agree with his tactics. Like many who show up here, he needs to chill the fvck out. Then he’ll be okay.

                      • Just don’t pretend that Fox News is any less biased than the other networks. Or that the left leaning pundits are less frothy.

                        • Big Daddy Ivan The Shortrightist says:

No one is pretending that JAC. Again, the reason Fox is such a target is that they keep telling everyone they are “fair & balanced” when they are anything BUT.

                        • paws4thot says:

As other times, my tendency is to get news off the web, not broadcast media. I always read multiple sources in the belief that they’re all differently biassed (eg, for Middle East stories I read the BBC, Al Jazeera and Jerusalem Post).

                        • Ivan, I see a lot of lefties screaming as fast as their fingers can type about how great those networks are.
You may not, but there are plenty that are. Or some that simply leave out the fact that the left leaning networks are just as bad, as they are bashing Fox News.

I’m sufficiently disappointed in the lack of international coverage and the shallow national coverage on the major TV stations, so that I tend to listen to the radio: NPR and BBC, and then do a lot of magazine and newspaper reading.

“I see a lot of lefties screaming as fast as their fingers can type about how great those networks are.”

I’ll need to see some proof of that. We ALL admit that MSNBC is leftist. NOBODY has denied it. That’s why we dirty libruls like to watch it. Again, we like to pick at Fox because they keep trying to convince everyone that they are “fair & balanced” when it is painfully obvious to everyone (well, everyone but you, apparently) that they are leaning so far right they are positively supine.

                        • I’ve never said that Fox isn’t right leaning. I have said that I’m sick of those who spout Faux Noise at everyone they disagree with politically. And your comment about “that’s why us dirty liberals watch it” basically says you are no different than the Fox News robots, with the exception of what aisle you sit on.
Go back and read the last few weeks of comments, and you will find plenty of people screaming how evenly balanced the other networks are.

                        • Big Daddy Ivan The Shortrightist says:

No, you’re the one making the claim. Show me.

Ok, several liberals have pointed it out. And now you resort to name calling.
It’s right here on this very page. And several others. Rando admits it, and a few others, but not all.

                        • Big Daddy Ivan The Shortrightist says:

I read the whole page. I don’t see where Rando (or anyone else) said MSNBC is not slanted left. Rando has ADMITTED (as have I) that MSNBC is a leftist station. We’ve BOTH said that’s why we like to watch it.

And for the record, the “numbnuts” was an affectionate namecalling. If I was being ugly, I would have called you fu(kweasel™

But someone who seriously believes all other news but fox are the ones twisting reality, you cannot call him rational. But I do concede there can be such a thing as a rational conservative. Have not met one personally.

I do conceede one thing though: He does admit GWB was not a good president. There is still hope for him.

Who told you I was a liberal or trolling? I disagree with quite a lot of liberal ideas, I do believe in rational thinking. Well maybe I was trolling a bit. But liberal? That is just a standard claim that conservatives make as soon as someone does not agree with their opinion or has the audacity to call Fox what it is.

They do have very good Shows on though. Shame about the rest.

            • I’ve NEVER said that Fox doesn’t have a slant. And you have done nothing but froth like a rabid dog this morning.

              • Monkey Trainer says:

Point 1: Conceeded. You did not and I made that assumption.

Point 2: The problem I have with Fox is that it is so slanted, it is turned around. None of the others go that far.

Point 3: You are the one who started with the presonal insults such as “frothy”, “trained monkey” and “rabid dog” so please do not claim any sort of moral or intellectual superiority.

                • Point 3. Your froth was drooling all over the place. I was stating the obvious. Your screename made the play obvious. And as others have pointed out, you were behaving as such, so you got called on it.

Point 2. The other networks are just as turned around, if you were to take the time to get info from outer sources, you would know that. The rant about the pundits is just as bad, as the left has their pundits too, and people who are just as robot like following them.

Point 1. Your assumption showed a lot about what you were doing. IE foaming at the mouth like a rabid dog.

                  • Monkey Trainer says:

Quite funny, you just cannot let go of an idea. You made an assumption that is just as wrong but are not willing to give it up in the face of contradicting evidence (the lame frothing dog analogy). Just this is also considered trolling.

Plus you just admited to the fact that it is a network, admitting to trolling yourself yet again.

And to make it all worse, you think I follow or defend the other networks (I even implied I agree with the slanted idea, just that Fox is the worst of them).

So, it appears you are even more in rage than you claim I am. In fact I can tell you I am quite happily drinking my tea and smiling at this. No froth yet but I will check regularly, I promise.

                    • Can you read? Or is it a reading comprehension problem?
No where have I said that Fox News wasn’t a network, but rather it isn’t the same as the Fox network.
Nor is there any thing here this morning that indicates that I am in any sort of rage, or even angry. You are the one that came out swinging with the troll comments.

                      • Monkey Trainer says:

Well, just repeating my insults is quite lame but if you cannot do better, that is the way it is. I will not refer you back to your original reply and leave the networks thing alone.

The reason one would be assuming you are in rage are quite clear, calling for shooting rabid dogs and implying that someone is frothing at the mouth because they disagree with you does display a high level of pent-up rage.

But alas, I have to leave you now so have fun kids. And remember: Bananas are good for you!

                        • Actually, the gun was a reference to a tranquilizer dart to calm a rabid dog down.
And it’s almost hysterical that you came in here in a rage, and now imply that my response to you trolling indicates that I am angry in any way. You are the one tied up with several people here this morning, and have been shut down by most of them.
Yes, run away. Your foolish rant impressed no one. People with intelligence didn’t let you get away with it.

MT is winning this one. Rationality win!

Come on JAC. You freak out EVERY time anyone says Fox is biased. The reason Fox is so (for lack of a better term before my 2nd cup of coffee) “picked on” is because they claim to be “fair & balanced” when they are anything BUT. The others don’t use that term, and everyone knows they are slanted. Fox is just the only one that refuses to admit it.

                        • I’m not defending Fox, in any way. I am pointing out how some people act like it’s the only one with a slant. You know, actually standing up for the truth instead of spinning things for one side or the other.
Nor do I see a win anywhere on this post of MT winning anything other than troll of the month award. Look how many times he has had to back track and admit he assumed things about me.

                        • Yes, nothing honest to say. Now, do us all a favor, and shout some obscenities as you run away. We find it hilarious.

Besides, I hate the “Fox News Debate”. It hijacks the entire thread, no one wins, and we all feel dirty afterwards. Although I was ticked that they had the t.v. on Fox News in my doctor’s waiting room the other day. I tried to drown it out by reading an article on the efforts to preserve the Star Spangled Banner.

About Fox news. They just don’t admit to being biased? Come on. Does anyone actually think ALL the other networks would just say “ok everyone we’re left, it’s ok.” Morally that’s the exact same thing. The entire argument is just a grabbing point for when one doesn’t know what to argue. I’m with Jane it’s a waste of time.

Your original post “What do you expect from a nation that believes the propaganda from the FOX “News” networks, bigotry, racism and plain old fashioned lying from douchebags and crybabies like Glenn Beck, Bill O Reilly and the rest of them.” was rather frothy, also you started out throwing the insults. True they weren’t directed at anyone here but they were insults. I hate Glenn Beck and Bill O’Reilly just as mush as the next liberal but I can find ways to discredit them without resorting to words like ‘douchebag’. That really isn’t the way to open a debate. If you wish to open a debate on your political views try using specific points, rational thought and maybe a little less froth.

                        • I’m gonna agree with Jane too. We need some liberal reinforcement here, but he’s gonna make us all look bad.

                        • Rando, why would you need reinforcement? An honest idea speaks for itself, and needs no defense.

It leads to most of us libs running into arguments with circular logic, no reasoning, and only one sided rationality. And you can only say the same stuff so many times to different people before you just don’t want to even try anymore…

Second, if you have been lurking, you know very well that we have had the ‘is fox news slanted’ argument a few too many times already…but you pulled it up just to re-create an argument—therefore trolling.

Read my post again – I already admitted to some light trolling. But according to the magna carta, I cannot be hanged twice for the same offence (again no pun intended).

Second, I was trying to make a post that this kind of propaganda leads to statements such as presented by the creator of Lincolns Caption. How does the repeated statement of the state of affairs in the news world in the US make the argument invalid?

                • Default User says:

I double checked and couldn’t find that bit in the magna carta though I admit I did just skim. Could you point me to the bit where it says we can’t hang you twice?

I’m not sure it’s in the Magna Carta, but the UK does have double jeopardy laws, covering both trial and punishment.

                    • creaturefeature says:

Yes, paws4thot, you are right. We have such laws, however –

*excuses herself while she goes into troll mode**

a person can be re-tried if a) significant new evidence comes to light, which was not available at the original trial and which could alter the original verdict; and b) where it becomes apparent that procedures wre not correctly followed at the original trial which could alter the original verdict.

I’m not sure of the exact details, but we have the European Union to thank for that little gem. We have had one successful prosecution of a murderer who initially thought he’d got away with it, but was re-tried when this EU thing was incorporated into British law.

I don’t often praise the EU, but this is one thing I do like.

I still think that is wrong; similarly the feature of the Code Napoleon where you can be held to be guilty until proven innocent.

                        • creaturefeature says:

I so agree with you on that last point. As to the ‘double jeopardy’ issue, I only know of the one case which is never sufficient to give a balanced opinion. However, it was an awful one.

A local woman was murdered and her corpse raped. Her boyfriend was tried but acquitted as the case could not be proved beyond reasonable doubt. After his acquittal, he openly bragged about his real guilt. He was tried again, but it could only be for perjury in the original trial. Our Criminal Justice Act of 2003, brought into law in 2005, removed the ‘double jeopardy’ protection (in England and Wales only; Scotland and N. Ireland still have it) and the boyfriend was re-tried, convicted and jailed for life.

What incensed the local community was the suffering of the woman’s parents who had not only lost their daughter, but had to sit and watch while her killer taunted them freely.

This one case is not enough to say whether the removal of double jeopardy ‘works’, but hey, law isn’t perfect.

                        • paws4thot says:

That one case is unfortunate, but in the main, other than due to perjury, cases fail due to lack of evidence.

I’d suggest that in your cited case, it would be equally effective to provide that the sentence for perjury was potentially unlimited, but the sentencing guidelines require that the judge sentence the perjurer as if they had been convicted of the crime they perjured themself in giving evidence during the trial of.

Sorry!! WRONG!! Gaelic is actually Irish. (In fact the Scots are actually Irish too.) Here’s how it happened. In Roman Times the Irish were known to raid Roman holdings, the term that the Romans gave to them was “Scotti” meaning raider. The name stuck (especially to those Irish people living in the North of the country who were the main raiders) The eventually became known as the Scots. However after some argument (I think over the High Kingship of Ireland) the Scots took off taking what they could carry and invaded several parts of what is now Britain (The parts that they affected mainly was SW Wales (I think thats round the Cardigan bay area, but I couldn’t tell you for sure. I know it begins with a C :-) ) and of course Scotland. However Scotland had their own tribe living there at the time called the Picts (One major difference was language, the Irish used Ogham, the Picts used (this is not a Pun!!) Pictographs, i.e similar to what the Aztecs used (No one has managed to figure out what the entire Pictish language means yet.) The Picts also used their own spoken language. However when the Irish (Scots) took over the country in 800 (ish I could be out a couple of hundred years) the Scots were led by Kenneth MacAlpin who encouraged the Picts and the Scots to work together. The Scots of course did this so that they could attempt to unify the language. The main language became Gaelic (which if you read it is very similar, if not identical to Irish Gaelic) and the Picto-Scottish people were just called Scots.

                          Mushrooms A La Crème

                          40g oyster mushrooms, ripped
                          40g chestnut mushrooms, sliced
                          40g shitake mushrooms, sliced
40g girolles mushrooms cut in ¼’s
                          1 banana shallot, diced
                          1tbs unsalted butter
                          50ml white wine
                          80ml double cream
Salt and freshly cracked black pepper
                          1tsp chopped fresh thyme
1tsp Truffle oil (optional – not!)

Heat a large non-stick frying pan with the butter, once the butter starts to foam add the mushrooms and season. Sauté the mushrooms and chopped shallot until golden brown and drain on kitchen paper.

Wipe the pan clean and return to the heat, return the golden brown mushroom and shallot to the pan and add the white wine, cook until the wine has evaporated and left the mushrooms with a gloss.

Add the cream and reduce until thickened and coating the mushrooms, stir in the chopped thyme and truffle oil.

Let the mushrooms cool whilst preparing the rest of the dish.

                          750g/1½lb beef fillet
                          15g/½oz butter
                          Mushrooms A La Crème
                          340g/12oz puff pastry
85g/3oz smooth pâté (foie gras is nice)
                          1 egg, lightly beaten
salt and freshly ground black pepper

                          Method
                          1. Preheat the oven to 200C/400F/Gas 6.
                          2. Season the beef well with pepper.
                          3. Melt the butter in a non-stick frying pan, add the beef and seal the outside, remove from the pan, place on a baking sheet and cook for 20 minutes, then cool.
                          4. Roll out the pastry to a rectangle big enough to cover the whole fillet. Place the fillet in the centre of the pastry, spread over the pâté then spoon over the mushroom mixture.
                          5. Trim off the corners of the pastry, brush the edges of the pastry with some beaten egg and wrap around the fillet to enclose.
                          6. Place the wrapped fillet, join side down, on a lightly oiled baking sheet, decorate with leaf shapes made from the remaining pastry, brush with any remaining egg then cook for 20 minutes until the pastry is golden.

Serve immediately with a generous helping of hot english mustard on the side (do NOT use that wimpy and bland american “mustard” go out and get some of the good stuff)

Wine poached Salmon with Black Truffles

                          Sauce:

1 ½ cups dry white wine
                          1/2 cup shallots, chopped
¾ oz black truffles, finely chopped
                          1 1/3 cups heavy cream
                          ½ teaspoon salt
                          1/8 teaspoon black pepper
                          2 tablespoons brandy
                          1 teaspoon arrowroot

                          Poached salmon:

                          2 cups dry white wine
                          ¼ teaspoon salt
                          ¼ teaspoon dried dill
                          1 ½ lb salmon fillet

                          To make sauce:

Combine 1 ½ cups white wine with shallots and simmer until the mixture has reduced by about three-quarters volume – 12-15 minutes. Add truffles, cream, salt, and pepper and heat through. In a small bowl, mix arrowroot and brandy until smooth. Whisk brandy mixture into cream sauce, and heat over low heat, stirring, until it has thickened.

                          To poach salmon:

Place salmon in a large skillet with 2 cups white wine, cut for fitting if necessary, and sprinkle with salt and dill. Simmer ingredients for 10 minutes, until just done, and remove from poaching liquid.

Serve on mashed potatoes made with plenty of cream and butter, chop some shallots and dill and stir through the mash

              • Easy one. I’m against the death penalty. To be honest, I thought about the Libertarian party, but quickly changed my mind. There are a lot of things redefined as modern conservative that I totally oppose. A lot of the things I think are wrong on the national level, could be done in an honest and legal way by the States and local govt. Though many of them I would support the ability to not participate in them.

                  • I have mixed feelings about the death penalty in all honesty.
On one level, I just don’t understand it. My favourite quote pertaining to it is “Why do we kill people to show people that killing people is wrong?”
But on another level, the sick mindedness of some people (John Wayne Gacy, Jeffrey Dahmer) – I don’t like the idea of spending my tax money letting a sick fukc like that live with 3 squares and a bed til he dies.
And other crimes that I know do not merit capital punishment (rape, child molestation) I feel strongly that they should..
Also, on a practical level, if we kill more prisoners.. it saves money. Oh noes! Don’t take away my bleeding heart liberal card! :-D

                    • mabsba says:

Actually, not arguing pro or con, but given the legal requirements for appeals for a death penalty, I think it is cheaper to imprison people for life than to pay for all that and the execution.

Now my dad always argued that child molesters should be cured with a rusty hatchet. :)

                      • Jane St.Clair Glamorous First Lady of PK says:

While satisfying to us, that doesn’t actually stop the behavior because child molestation, like rape, has nothing to do with sex and everything to do with power and control.

                        • mabsba says:

Oooo, but you’re wrong. As my mom will attest from her days in an ER as a student nurse, whacking the privates off with anything almost always results in death from blood loss. Presto! Problem solved!

                        • Both of you make very good points.

Although, pedophilia (and I don’t have any statistics on how many convicted child molesters are pedophiles, but I do know that not all pedophiles are child molesters and not all child molesters are pedophiles) is a disorder wherein the subject is sexually attracted to pre-pubescent children (usually exclusively). So in that case, yeah, it would be about sex. At least in part.

                      • Well, ok I will concede that point.

So it should go like this:
Judge: “You have been found guilty, the penalty is death.” *gavel slam*
“Bailiff, take him (or her) out back and shoot them.”

                        The end.

        • *ahem* Dude, MSNBC really does lean to the left, which is why I like it so much. ;) If you’re gonna bitch about Fox leaning to the right, at least be willing to admit the left leaning networks too. The other networks at least seem more balanced to me, but hey, I’m a liberal. LOL

          • jim says:

“MSNBC really does lean to the left”

Just for future use, when a lean assumes the horizontal, it’s no longer leaning…

            • Torus2112 says:

Everybody needs to calm down. Let me break it down, and I am not trolling, I’ll give you justification if you ask, but:

              MSNBC: Liberal

CNN: As Fair As It Gets

              FOX: Conservative

Full disclosure, Liberal here but thinks for itself (pro gun, semi pro business, Democratic Socialist)

              • Oddly enough, many conservatives think CNN is as liberal leaning as MSNBC. I don’t see it either. I haven’t really watched any of them since the election, though.

                • I haven’t watched CNN in years, but back then, it was pretty left leaning. Or maybe at the time it was Clinton leaning.

                  • Maxwell Silverhammer has small weirdly powerful hands says:

It was Clinton leaning I think… but nowadays CNN is the king of spewing some talking points, but never discussing the actual facts.

                    • So in other words, don’t let factual information get in the way of the truth, just spew talking points.

                      • Torus2112 says:

Exactly, say what you will, including that they have virtually no actual substance out of a paralyzing fear of being thought biased, including giving the “crazy” side (not necessarily con., so relax) equal time it doesn’t deserve,

                        *breath*

but they are not biased. If I were to recommend an undecided independent watch one network, this would be it.

I like MSNBC though, that’s the good stuff.

                        • Igloo McCoy says:

MSNBC does lean left but they’re not like acid-spewing diehards, and they actually report (sometimes). Fox completely spins a story so it can suit the weekly talking point, but there is usually a couple factual accuracies. CNN doesn’t even bother to report the story, they just do fluff pieces about neighborhood pirates. Or something.

                        • Yeah, MSNBC doesn’t have tingly leg syndrome. Yeah. You keep thinking that. Maybe you might convince yourself, but not anyone else.
Some of the most liberal people on here have admitted MSNBC was the most liberal. *sigh*

Flow of conciousness is a valid way of writing a novel; it has no place in political speechmaking!

          • Monkey Trainer says:

That would assume that there was a consciousness to begin with. Or that the ap.. I mean former president did not read of teleprompters (which of course could NOT be clearly seen almost every time) and still managed to sound like he did.

                • The Truth says:

Actually it existed since the year dot. Every nation did it (as machines weren’t invented then and so it was more viable to use slaves to do work that was dangerous and or needed a lot of people to work cheaply.) The Babylonians did it, The Sumerians did it. The Egyptians did it (even though nowadays it’s more politically correct to say that they didn’t use slaves to build their Pyramids that they were constructed by skilled builders, which by the way is bullshit. Yes some skilled workers were used but the majority of the donkey work was done by slave labour, shifting stones etc) even it appears Native American tribes used slaves, as did the Mayans and Aztecs, for one ethnic group to start claiming that they were so hard done by because they were enslaved, is an insult to all that other nations in the world who were (including all the nations that the Romans enslaved and you don’t find anyone hammering at the Italians door and demanding that they pay compensation.) Oh BTW for those ignorant ethnic minorities who feel that they were the only ones in modern times to be enslaved, Whites were also enslaved, of course it wasn’t called Slavery (although in some cases it was) it was known as Indentured Labour. It was often used as punishments by courts, or for people who fell into debt. These people were shipped over to the Caribbean where they were forced to work on plantations. Lots of people were affected by this. I believe that it was used in 1745-1746 during the Jacobite rebellion especially after Culloden when the English forces shipped thousands of Highlanders to the Americas as indentured workers as punishment for rebelling against the King.

                  • paws4thot says:

I’d need to check a few of these claims, primarily the one that indentured labour was used as a punishment in criminal law (it certainly was used as a means of punishment/debt repayment in civil law) in the UK, but this is mostly correct.

                    • The Truth says:

Actually it is true. Indentured Labour was used (maybe not so much in this country, except in serious cases where they wanted to get rid of a fractious minority) especially in Spain where Piracy was involved. The Spanish either hung the Pirates (as did all other nations) or they made use out of them by making them indentured Labourers.

If it’s only 1 million, that’s 1 million too many. No human should have to die as a form of birth control.

      • Default User says:

would have been miscarriages I assume you mean? I read one statistic that said 50% of pregnancies are miscarried before the woman knows she’s pregnant. I don’t know how they came by this number as I’m not sure how you find out a woman is pregnant and going to miscarry without the woman herself knowing. But if it’s true then that would make God the biggest abortionist of them all.

          • UnhappyVegemite says:

I disagree. If a woman doesn’t want to bear a child to term then why should she be forced to because of other peoples (predominantly male-centric) religious beliefs. While I’m not comfortable about abortions as a method of birth control either (safe sex and the pill are much better and less distressing options) there are however circumstances where it is simply cruel and apathetic to criminalise abortions.

PS the rosary and ovary thing is just coz it rhymes :) also satan works for G-d to suggest otherwise is technically a breach of the 1st Commandment

            • No, it’s not a breach of the 1st Commandment. While it’s true that there is nothing that God didn’t know would happen, satan doesn’t work for God.
And are you so foolish as to think that it’s not murder, simply because a human is still in the womb? Why not make it so that if she gets tired of raising the child, she can just shoot it? After all, it’s male centric religious beliefs that we shouldn’t kill others.

This is true. I remember my mom telling me this. But, like DU, I’m not sure how they know this. • viking gal says:

The pregnancies were detected via blood tests for Human Chorionic Gonadotropin, which is made by the pre-placental tissues starting from one week until 3 months of pregnancy. Implantation is usually around 8 to 10 days post-fertilization, and can cause bleeding and cramping (sometimes mistaken for a light, slightly early period).

Technically, Lincoln WAS a 3rd party candidate – the Republican party was only 6 years old at the time, and only rose to its position from one of the two main parties collapsing in the 1850s, and the Democrats splitting themselves on regional issues after their main competition went tits-up for the 1860 election.

If someone wants to bring up Lincoln’s rather draconian steps in wartime, then someone needs to also compare them to FDR’s prior to his own war, as well as during the war – or Andy Jackson’s in a time of relative peace (why the rank & file of both parties idolize Jackson is beyond me – of course I do have enough Cherokee blood to be a bit biased – but he set the bar for DC corruption, even ignoring the Trail of Tears)

It stated that all slaves were to be freed outside of the country according to President Lincoln’s proclamation.

Any historical figure, if analyzed sufficiently will fall short of perfection.

We are all human and we all make mistakes.

Was the war horrible? Yes, of course. Did it bring the country back together? Yes it did.

Who is the one super power in the world now? The U.S.

It is easy to look back with the information we have now and pick apart every decision made by every figure in history. Its harder to look back and acknowledge, though horrible, our past has led a decent present.

Though actions taken during the civil war may not un-biased, moral, whatever. They did lead us to where we are today. The U.S is not perfect, far from it. We are however a country with immense power and many freedoms not enjoyed in the rest of the world. If we can only figure out how to do things right in the present, imagine what tomorrow will look like.

The fact that we all have the spare time to get so heated in this online discussion and are not forced to fight for survival on a daily basis, shows we have it pretty good.

I will not always agree with what we do as a country, but I am damn happy I live here. We have, do and will make many mistakes along the way. We should all be thankful we have the right to freely question our past and our leaders. There are places in the world where such conversations would lead to death or prison.

    • For some reason, I felt the urge to actually reply thoughtfully to this.

As much as I abhor slavery, when you read history (or even some of the comments on this page), it is apparent that the South, while douchebag-ish is not solely responsible for moving the nation to war.
(Yeah I’m still kinda drunk so let me sort this out)
The North did not go to War with the South solely out of some moral obligation to free the slaves.
It is called The War of Northern Aggression because Lincoln wanted to deny the States their right to sovereignty. Pure and simple.

Yes, I agree with the decision to outlaw slavery. I find it appalling. Well, unless you’re kinky and both parties are willing, but enough about me and bitter troll.

If it weren’t so financially motivated, I dare say Lincoln would have said “Well, see you guys! Good luck!” and then laughed when (if) they asked to join the Union again.

In short, you’re a douchebag. Read a book.

  36. ZOMG DID YOU GUYS KNOW THAT LINCOLN ACTUALLY -WAS- A THIRD PARTY CANDIDATE?!?!?!?!?!?!!1

    • Default User says:

Does that mean the choices from the two main parties were even worse than bush and kerry?! That must have been a bad year for politics.

  37. Philip says:

Ah, the good old 19th century: the time when neither black people (in many states) nor women (in all states) were allowed to vote.

So, an alternative caption for this image:

    ABRAHAM LINCOLN
A time when sex and race were more important than brains, strength of character, courage and patriotism.

    Oh, uncomfortable history…
There might have been a woman or a black man who would have been an even better president, and she or he could never have been elected.

  38. jim says:

Hi neighbor! Sounds like you’re looking for a bathhouse! *helpfully points skrodal towards California*

  39. Jiggle says:

Epic Fail….He was a racist, or have we forgot about all the Indians he wanted to slaughter or the statement about how he would do anything to keep the Union, even free the slaves…….Outstanding or Opportunistic?

  40. MadDogVAQ33 says:

Lincoln was the FIRST “professional politician” who oversaw massive expansion of Federal power. He and Obama would hit it off quite except, except that Obama is “sort of” Black and Lincoln was a racist and white supremacist…by his own words.

REAL history, not folk legend is a lot more interesting that creating a saint out of a sow’s ear.

  41. loldanza says:

how the hell is this funny who the hell votes for these crappy lolz?!

  42. zerbo says:

    because he was a republican

  43. xy says:

To be fair, neither would Washington, Kennedy, FDR or Taft. Because they’re dead, and (even if the constitution doesn’t specifically mention it) I am pretty sure one of the requirements for running for office is to have a pulse.

    • Default User says:

Hmm…technically it doesn’t mention it. You may have something here. *begins Nikola Tesla for president campaign. * Free electricity for everyone!

      • Vila Restal says:

Considering that Nikolai Tesla has been dead for 66 years, you’ll need that free electricity for trying to resurrect him.

“He lives Igor. He Lives. BWAHAHAHAHAHAH” :-)

        • Default User says:

There’s technically no requirement for him to be alive. *parades mostly decayed corpse around* He’s doing a handshaking this afternoon following the press conference. *wonders if Tesla could have found a way to resurrect someone using electricity*

  44. Bubu says:

This is bullshit. The dude was an asshole. Stop allowing 14yr old punks to write captions.

  45. anon says:

Lincoln hated black people, do some research, he freed them so he could get rid of them.
