Actually it hasn’t really been conclusively proved. There’s not been enough research done on other contributing factors such as the sun either getting closer (or hotter) – Explains why the days seem to be getting shorter, increased gravity=increased spin. Or the fact that we are currently in a Glacial Ice Age. As with all things the Ice Age must eventually come to an end at some point (it can’t be in a continuous ice age until **cough** hell freezes over ) and so we might be viewing the end of the last Ice Age. Yes there might be contribuiting factors in human beings, but it doesn’t explain everything. People are looking for a simple answer when the answer just isn’t that simple and the question is even harder.

Yeah, they took part of Karelia. There are a few groups who want to see Karelia returned to Finland, ProKarelia being one. In the past several years since WW2, it was almost a taboo to consider Russia giving it back, didn’t want to rattle the peace between the two.

We did lose that war in sense that we had to submit to the Russian demands. But Russians never conquered Finland or occupy it. Also Finnish army didn’t surrender to Russians. This may not seem significant, but there is enormous difference between ex-soviet satelites and allies and Finland.

Finland remained independent nation althought Russia had/has significant effect on forein policy (come to think of it, so does USA, but that is much more discreet).

I thought I liked it, and then had to do it as part of my teacher training (we have to go through gym class all over again) when you’re forced to skate-ski in old fashioned cross country skiis, it stops being fun.

While I agree that it’s very, very exaggerated, I think the Soviet command was quite surprised about how hard that articular frontline turned out to be. As in, the Finnish army did defend their country more successfully than expected.

Yes – Finland was all but finished, but the Soviet Union didn’t expend those last resources on actual conquering. Finland was – most probably – beat, but no one dealt them the death blow. Which, to me, is not the same thing as conquering, which was why I asked. Thanks for explaining what you meant.

Make the invaded one unable to defend and protect own teritory – after the Mannerheim line has been breached Finns were all but defenceless, their tenacity meant absolutely nothing next to lack of defensive positions.
Also, when counting USSR gains of the winter war don’t forget to add Bukowina and Besarabia to the pool, since after Finnland Romania decided there was absolutely no point in defying russians (as they would get what they want no matter the cost) and gave up what was demanded immediately (which was a mistake on Stalin’s part, but that’s another story)

Actually Mountain Troops have been going on since the year dot. Germany had them in both wars. Austria had them in both Wars. (I believe that even Poland has Mountain Infantry.) Britain has them (kind of!!) but they are either covered by the Royal Marines or the Gurkhas. All you need to have Mountain Infantry is to have something approaching a mountain range in your country. (

Actually it was another case of “The Enemy of my Enemy is my Friend”. The Finns would have sided with China, France, the USA, or even the Vatican City, if they were fighting the Russians, but in this case the Germans were, so they got the Finns support. (However for what is said here, the Finns dealt the Russians an extremely bloody nose, even though they were eventually defeated. The Russians were eventually forced (I believe by the United Nations) into accepting the Finns nationality, although they did take land away from the Finns.

Part of checking experiments by others is trying to prove them wrong. So in this statement you actually agreed with The Skeptic. If someone isnt able to prove the other wrong, then their science is sound. If they are able to then the experiment needs to be re-thought. Its how science works best.

No, it’s not.
Science is not about believing claims, it’s about supporting your claims with evidence and checking the experiments done by others to ensure they’re correct. I don’t need scepticism in science, because everyone is using proper evidence.

Scepticism is something you use in popular media, where statements do not have sources and where facts are hardly ever checked. Popular media is NOT science, it’s entertainment. Peer reviewed papers are science, go read them if you want facts.
