Sarah Palin is a great idea to me, unfortunately she probably won’t run, I think she intends to be an advocate for conservatism and a pundit on the national scene. I’m sure she will like the money.

With the way the conservatives are fighting amongst each other and basically cockblocking anyone who doesn’t have the exact shared “vision” of America, I’d say the conservative vote would be too split to hope for a victory.
A lot of conservatives tend to be a bit too extreme for mainstream America these days.

Conservatives are showing surprising unity, we are “losing” a few rinos but thats not much of a loss. When was the last time an independent conservative almost won in New York? And we took the govenorships of two heavily Democratic states, I’m pretty happy with our recent results. There are a lot of conservative Dems who might cross over next time.

The trouble for voting for the person is that the party controls the Senate and the House of Representatives. That’s why you get conservative Democrats voting for bills that they would not normally support. The party line and party discipline. The Republicans biggest problem of late was not having an effective party whip. That and George Bush was basically too nice and too Christian. He was a good man, but not a party leader.
So having a goverment that works like a highschool is fine?
That’s sort of the case Jim and it’s also a case of political warfare. Oftentimes the opposing side will add an amendment to the bill to either filibuster or to get people to vote for things they normally wouldn’t.
I’d give you specific examples, but none come to mind, but a good example would be, a credit card reform bill that has nothing but good ideas, but Senator X from State Y who’s in the pocket of credit company Z throws in an amendment making killing babies legal… no one would vote for it.. ever. Not only does the much needed change not pass, but Senator X can now use the voting down as fodder against his political enemies. Ie: “Well Senator A, why didn’t you vote yes on the credit card reform bill?! You hate the working class burdened with credit card debt!”
This is exactly why we need either a Constitutional amendment or some type of law in place that does not allow riders to any bills. The bill is clearly stated, and is ONLY ONE THING. THen we don’t get provisions to subsidize the buying of hairpieces for bald men with impotence problems attached to a bill for the funding of school lunch programs.

Dividing by zero again, I agree with froo. This is a big reason why real change never makes it through Congress. Let their bills speak for themselves. If they’re good, pass them. If they’re bad, don’t pass them. Don’t sabotage them by putting stupid stuff on there. Yeah, I know a lot of congress people do it to get their more local agendas passed, but aren’t their any other ways to do that?
It has nothing to do with helping the people, and everything to do with paying back their back alley dealmakers who got them elected and are keeping them there. It’s very much a “you scratch my back, I’ll get you funding for your haircare and tiki bar you want to open up.”

the Northern suburbs certainly are, and thats where everyone is now. The Dems carried that state by quite a bit during the Presidential elections as I recall – between 8 and 15 points maybe. Then to lose every elective office during this last election, it was a major turn-around. Limbaugh is the best political analyst I’ve ever seen, no one even comes close to him. I thought Carter’s guy Zbigniew Brzezinski was pretty good on Eastern Europe, but Limbaugh is amazing.

And finally you’re talking about a guy who said that because Virginia and New Jersey voted conservative for their state elections that it somehow means that Obama is on his way out.
Max: Actually DC suburbs, Richmond, Fredricksburg, Norfolk are quite Democratic. Especially Northern VA due to all the Maryland transplants (thanks asshats). If you look at where VA had gone in the last eight years you would see a trend moving towards being a Smurf state.

To the dems who think the Republican party is D-E-D dead. Think again. Look at New Jersey and Virginia (clean sweep). A lot of the moderates do not like Obama’s plans and actions. They are the ones who sway votes, and if Obama and Dems continue down this Health Care, keep fvcking up Afghanastan, not cracking down on terrorism, overspending (threatening more taxes), then the Dems are in for a VERY VERY rude awakening. If Al Franken can get voted in b/c of anger towards a certain party, ANY moron can.
I think they’re taking the right course in Afghanistan. In fact a lot of republican senators do too. Kit Bond for one. They’re using smart power tactics. Move in and empower the people, not just bombing the place to dust.
It’s what finally got us the upper hand in Iraq as well. We started arming and supplying the Iraqi forces just as well as our own, and befriending the people. The trick in wars in the middle east isn’t to crush the opposition, it’s to befriend the locals so the opposition loses the home ground advantage.
Powell’s endorsement clearly was about race, as Rush noted what other liberal democrat has Powell voted for. Especially with John McCain running, the infamous moderate that all the rinos have been begging for. I never did like Powell, he did nothing but stab GWB in the back for the last 4 years. Bush should have gotten rid of him, but Bush was loyal to people who werent loyal to him. Even back to when Powell was testing the waters for a run for President, you couldn’t beat a position out of him. It wasn’t until he left the race that he showed his true colors. Anybody who knew him knew he had a lot of liberal leanings, but he wasn’t about to go public with them.
You’re kidding right? The surge is what worked in Iraq. Now as US troops are leaving Iraq is falling back into chaos. Afghanastan is almost a lost cause, b/c it’s taken Obama almost a year to finally doe something about it (though it was one of his campaign promises). We’ve had more loss of US troops in Afghanastan since Obama has taken over, and Iraq losses are increasing again.
Let’s not forget that Iran now has two nuclear reactors, Russian anti-air missle system, and pretty much a middle finger to the rest of the world.
Smart Power worked in Iraq, because it’s the tactics they used. The surge was PART of that. Patreus fully employed smart power tactics in Iraq as soon as he arrived, and that was when things started to turn around. And in my opinion, Afghanistan will always be a quagmire, and there is no “winning” there, but that’s just opinion after studying the history of occupations in Afghanistan. Don’t forget Obama did not start either of those wars, and he’s been more concentrated on issues here at home, which is what we should be doing in the first place. It’s a large reason as to why Bush alienated us from the rest of the world. Many nations wondered where we got the idea that we were justified in going to fix another nation’s government when our own was basically ignoring issues that are still plaguing us today.
Iran is… well Iran is a touchy situation. The last time we interfered with Iran, well… we’re the reason they’re in such bad shape today. Just like Iraq. We put someone into power and things fell apart from there. The sooner we realize that we need to keep our noses out of Islamic business, the better things will be. I’m not saying the things going on there are to be ignored, but everytime we try to “fix” something, it never gets fixed and usually ends up breaking worse than it was before.

No, I dont have much problem with Congressmen running for other offices provided they still do their jobs, but I reject the argument that there is much difference at all between what Obama did and what Palin did. I think Palin will do more good on the national scene. And she already has by labeling the death panels. It puts the argument in focus.
Except for that horrible little thing called facts, that there are no death panels. I like you jim, you don’t degrade into name calling.. but if you take Rush and Palin as advocates of truth, then you seriously need to re-evaluate who you listen to. The death panel issue is bollocks, hence why both conservatives and liberals on this site make fun of it so heavily. Also if you’d look at just about every single health care plan from the private sector, you’ll notice they have the exact same service listed as available.
The death panels remark drives libs crazy, but its pithy and does a great job of focusing the argument. This is exactly what nationalized health care results in, rationing of care. Its unavoidable. It is the only way costs can be cut. Just last week I got an email at work that there was more Swine flu vaccine in, but, I was not a priority patient, and I couldn’t get it.
As for this site, I’d say liberals, moderate liberals, and extreme liberals make fun of it. Thats a good thing, if it wasnt effective they wouldnt care. I had the misfortune of being a news junkie when we only had CBS, NBC, ABC, and PBS. I had no idea how news services twisted the story and selected the “news.” It was only after I heard both sides of the story from guys like Limbaugh that the bias became obvious. I remember David Brinkley marveling at how he had gone from being a liberal to a conservative by the end of his career, and it wasnt because his politics had changed. It was because the news business had become liberal. Rather, Jennings, Brokaw, Cronkite – all big libs. And it wasnt until talk radio that guys like Helms, Gingrich, Lott and Delay had a chance to rebutt some of the slander they had put up with for years.

Ultimately health care must be rationed and that is what the death panels are all about. Thats exactly what happens all over the world when health care is nationalized. It is part of the culture of death that John Paul II spoke of. Denying care to patients that smoke or are too heavy, encouraging women to abort children with medical issues, denying care to patients at the end of life. It is very real. Like Obama telling that woman her mother should just “take a pain pill” instead of getting a transplant. Choosing who gets care and who does not. I dont want government involved or making decisions for me. I had enough of that in the army, you dont get any choice there either.

Or as the health insurance companies call it ‘Pre-existing conditions! No insurance for you!’ And thus no health care as they can’t afford it, anyhow.
Some insurances also encourage the ending of a pregnancy when there is going to be medical issues so they don’t have to pay anything for the care of the child once it’s born. They also find ways to try (and in many cases successfully do) get out of paying for end of life care for seniors or the terminally ill. Infact in those states who have a right to die law, for those terminally ill, they will pay for the patient to die, but not to live on with medication.
Mind you these are some of the private insurance companies, that people are so worried about getting thrown under the bus.
The whole ‘death panals’ spew came about when someone noticed that Obama wants to ensure people are able to get counseling on the end of life care which is common in many insurance companies. You get old eventually, or in some sad cases, you are terminally ill. To have someone able to help lay things out with you so you know what will happen, and can be comfortable with it, without having to pay an arm and a leg for said counseling, I’d think would be comforting to people. My Grandfather had that same thing when he was at the end of his time, and he had chosen on being able to pass away at home under hospice care.
Obama wanted to ensure counseling the same way the IRS ensures you pay taxes. That is, at the point of a gun. By force. Unhappy with your insurance? Get another carrier. Think you can do it better than they? Start your own insurance company and learn firsthand. You can’t get away from the federal government. A few weeks ago my state demanded to be told where I went to college to perform jury duty. I told them it was none of their business. I was cited for contempt of court and put in a cell all day. I easily could have been held over in a public city cell had the trial gone on more than a day. The census is no different, if you are sent a census questionaire and refuse to provide the information, you can be imprisoned for months. To quote the Wire, “thats how they do.” There is nothing wrong with our health care system that can’t be fixed by expanding competition among the providers. I am not willing to chip away at the constitution or give anyone more control over my life. Libertat!
I know this doesn’t fit with yout reality, but it was not Obama, but a Replublican senator who wanted to include the end of life counseling (what you are calling death panels). His experience with his father’s death made him realize how little most people know about their options when terminally ill, meaning such things as hospice and living wills.
And it was an OPTION — his amendment just required that it be offered.

Well isn’t that what the public OPTION will do? It will be competition for all of the private health insurance companies.
Competition that’s supposed to have some laws to help ensure those who are covered by it don’t get screwed over royally. Like you know, not getting covered by pre-existing conditions, having things changed on your policy without notice, or even getting dropped without notice.
But still it’s currently in development as an OPTION, as many people seem to forget. And I can support a public option. Perhaps I could finally get health care without having to worry if I can afford something out of pocket. Thanks to asthma both my kid and I are considered un-insurable. Have you any idea what it’s like to see your child get sick, and have to hope that they don’t get so sick they need to go to the doctors? Or that I won’t catch it myself so that if I have to pay for anyone I just have to pay for his bills, and not his AND mine? Sure this makes me a bit biased on the whole public option. I can admit that, but as things stand now I can say something DOES need to be done about it so that everyone can get health care.

No, Moore got under my skin because he is the master of the cheap shot. I forget which one of his “documentaries” had the interviews with the wounded soldiers, but those guys were hot after they saw how he twisted their words. It was Fahrenheit 911. A bunch of Clinton’s people put together a response to it, a real eye-opener. Ron Silver, Mayor Koch, and Clinton’s political adviser were in it. They went back and interviewed those soldiers and they blasted Moore.
Note where I describe him as a polemicist; you don’t expect them to be unbiassed. If you don’t want them to give a biassed representation of your views, either insist on the right to view and censor the completed work, or don’t give the interview. Don’t complain afterwards!
Michael Moore will never be richer than I. He doesn’t seem very happy at all.
Come to think of it, I seem to remember that Moore took interviews that had already been done by someone else and re-edited them to make them appear to be something they were not. And he would have gotten away with it, had it not been for the response video. These were veterans who sacrificed for their country and they deserved better.

A lot of brave Russian citizens died or spent years in prison for you to “get out.” Do I know this from personally talking to Soviets? Yes, I know it from working with them. But one need not experience everything personally to understand. No doubt there are feelings for the mother Russia, but for communism and the Soviet Union? Most of those who long for the old days know only the wreckage that remains of Russia now.
Communism is socialism, so believed the Bolsheviks, and Marx and Engles. Lenin was no better than Stalin, although perhaps not as proficient a murderer as Stalin. But Stalin was his boy right up to the end. And if not Lenin or Stalin, another monster would have appeared. Socialism / Communism begets them.

Yes, I suffered through the Communist Manifesto years ago and plenty of Lenin’s writings, but I never believed that drivel. Nor did I buy into the communist propensity to keep changing the name and acting like it was a completely different line of thought that could not be compared to the previous failed incarnation (i.e. socialism, communism, marxism, nazism, fascism, menshevikism, bolshevikism, leninism, trotskiyism, stalinism, maoism, bobism, perestroika) The only real point of the distinctions seems to be the intent of preventing the discussion of any of them and their faults.
