Death doesn’t scare me. DYING. That scares me.
Why does dying scare you? I learned to accept the nature of death years ago. I figured that in order to have respect and understanding for life, one must do the same for death. Death is just another part of life. We are born, we live our lives, we age, and we die; falling into oblivion. This discussion is rather fitting, as I learned today that someone I once worked very closely with died about a month ago. I do not feel sadness, nor am I complaining about it or ranting about how unfair it is. Although she went far to early (she was only in her mid 50’s or so) she lived her life well and was happy, no one could ask for more than that. Death and dying are natural, and once we accept them as an inevitable part of our lives, we can begin to appreciate the deaths of others, as well as our own. I must say, In death, I see a sort of serene beauty in the completion of nature’s cycle.
P.S. Sorry about the poeticism near the end there, it tends to sneak up on me at times.

Meh, like I said, I’m a little nutty. Death and destruction are to me what paintings and music are to most. Not that I cause any, I just have the same level of appreciation for it. It’s difficult to explain in words: to me death is somewhat beautiful, but killing different and I find it unpleasant. Like I said, it’s hard to explain…
Ever considered working/volunteering in a hospice? Not being sarcastic, but it just seems like it would be a good match.
Well, my plan is to get a career in either the ecology or biology fields , but it’s always good to know that I could become a coroner or autopsy technician as a fallback plan. Besides, I’m not obsessed with death, I just have a greater appreciation for it than most people. It’s not like I follow people around waiting for them to die or anything like that.
I can imagine it would freak people out if they saw you skulking (isn’t that a great word?) around behind them with a balaclava on..

Oh, and there is no serene beauty in death. I had to sit and watch my baby die in February because she was born too early to be saved. There was nothing beautiful about it. It proved once and for all that the world has no justice, no karma. Bad things happen to good people, and innocent babies die. If you haven’t actually witnessed death, then you’re probably a little out of your league saying there’s a “serene beauty” to it.
It’s not been my (limited) experience, but I’m willing to believe that under the right circumstances, there could be serenity at death.
My only thought, really, was that somebody who’s not as freaked out by death as most of us are would be well suited to work with the dying.
Rando, for the most part I agree. There are instances though where a person dying is peaceful as they take their last breath. On the other hand, I’ve seen more than my fair share of people dying in horrible ways and there is absolutely nothing serene watching someone die in a great deal of pain, crying for the love of their mother. The ONLY thing that you can do is hold their hand and hope to God the pain passes quickly.

Yeah… The process of dying can be rather nasty in all ways, but once you’re dead, you’re dead, as far as I see it. I see no reason to hold on to notions of afterlives, but I can fully understand why people want to. It’s a bit like understanding why people like strawberry icecream while I can’t really stand the stuff. :p

I’ve seen it, don’t think I’d be hypocritical enough to speak of had I not! My grandmother died from Alzheimer’s, a truely awful and pathetic way to go; the last time I saw her she didn’t even recognize her own son, is that enough of a perspective for you!? I’ve witnessed more than my share of death, don’t think I’m unaware of the gruesome forms it can take! Look, I may criticize people’s views sometimes, BUT I NEVER CALL THEM WRONG! I’ve known plenty of people who have died early and painful deaths. NEVER CALL ME NAIVE AGAIN WITHOUT PROOF!
First of, chill the f*ck out, ok? I didn’t say you were wrong, I said you may have a false perspective. I will grant you that you may have seen the gruesome side of death, what I’m trying to work out is how that coincides with a serene death?

Thirdly, watching someone die from alzhiemer’s (as bad as that is), I think I can say that it doesn’t even begin to compare to someone dying from having their body blown apart.
And lastly, I do know there are times when people can have a serene death. It happened with my father, my mother, and my sister. All three of them just quietly slipped away. No pain, no suffering, and without the fear of dying.
Look, like I said, it’s hard to explain. It’s not a concept I expect anyone to understand. It’s like trying to explain green to someone who’s colour blind, the concept simply is incomprehensible to someone lacking my perception. My mind is not real stable and my personality is not normal, I do not perceive the world in a normal fashion. My view of the world is exceptionally dark, everyday life feels like a Poe story to me: everyone is full of hate for one another hidden behind fake smiles, hiding from themselves out of fear of who they really are; because deep down they all want to choke the life out of each other. You haven’t even seen my darker side yet, because I keep it hidden for the sake of those around me, as well as my own. To me the world of humanity is nothing but a world of masks and lies, allowing such thoughts to roam freely can affect me rather adversely. All I can explain to you is this: you do not understand my perception of death because you cannot understand it, nor will you ever be able to understand it unless you become as twisted an individual as I have become; not something I would really suggest you try to do. My view of death is only a small portion of my thoughts, and if it was enough to bother you I guarantee you see any more of them.
P.S. This is my way of kindly asking to drop the subject.

Not much to say on the absolute truth. Both parties have a high level of corruption and both parties accuse the other of being a horrific Daddy/Mommy/Nanny/Fascist/Not Sexy Babysitter state. If either was actually right, the former would be killed in their sleep in a bunch of tragic BDSM Man Sex/whatever is taboo at the time scences.

I think its TV exposure. Sometimes during some of the campaigns you would hear so much about the radical religious right that you certainly would assume they must be in power. And they were certainly out and about trying to get voters to vote republican during the second Bush term. Not that I care, but it seems like “morality” changes from left to right depending on who they think they can sell it to the most in any given election year.
One minor point, at least from my experience, I don’t recall any fundamentalist preacher ever encouraging their ‘flock’ to vote Democrat..

Well, by my definition, a fundamentalist Christian is someone who believes the bible is the inerrant, exhaustive word of God. Hence the ‘fundamental’ part.
Well, the bible says something about homosexuality being an abomination, and whatever, so yeah, that’s something I’m against (as a fundamentalist), and on my last trudge through Leviticus, I think damaging an unborn child was also not allowed, so (as a fundamentalist) I’m against that too.
Fundamentalism is simple, like i said.
The Bible also says (I think in Leviticus) that you should not eat pork, shellfish, dishes that mix flesh and dairy goods…
I’d point out that I was talking about a specific subset of fundamentalism, that being fundamentalist black congregations in the part of the South I live in, and their tendency to encourage their congregation to vote for Democrats regardless of the disparity between their beliefs and the party platform.

Somewhat, I’ve only witnessed his antics through the use of the “Random LOL” button. I found him remarkably funny, he was too blatantly insulting to take seriously.

I know, but he did that “hit and run” style of trolling and still expected to be taken seriously, even after the conservative posters here started getting angry at him. He was nothing short of a clown, completely unable to converse civilly and he never even tried to defend his accusations beyond calling people names. In addition to that, he was a total hypocrite, sometimes he would condemn his own methods as many as three times in a single thread! What I found most amusing about him was how blind he was to his own foolishness, truly he was a hero in his own mind.
