  1. Bix Nood says:

I’d like to have one of those lenses.

Too bad you could buy a cheap car for the price of one.

  2. VMalska says:

I second that…I’d like one of those lenses as well…but all they seem to be used for these days is taking pictures of cruddy celebs instead of pursuing actual photography…and the funny thing is, they don’t even need those lenses to take a high quality picture of a person.

  3. Lllll. says:

    …”The stewardess if the future from Stanley Kubrick’s 2001: A Space Odyssey”…

  4. Sheesh says:

“If only they could find real news”- like, say, ACORN, the Green Czar, John Edwards, Teaparties, massive marches on the Whitehouse, . What do you expect from the Government Media? CNN ( Communist News Network) is the worst. Nothing but stories about our ” Glorious shining Leader Obama ( may he live forever as President for Life).

    • Dhoti says:

Let’s see how well they cover today’s Breitbart bombshell.

Perhaps they’ll be inspired to do better after being pumped full of sweet, sweet government cash.

      • He’s a spy, he’s been paid by Kim yong very ill, to sow mistrust and suspicion amongst honest and obedient american citizens.

      • NHSparky says:

Dayum, where’s my bailout? I’m still waiting on my pony, too! Oh, silly me, I forgot–I don’t get a bailout, I just have to PAY for it.

        /so do my kids

        //so do my grandkids

      • charro the Floydist says:

“Perhaps they’ll be inspired to do better after being pumped full of sweet, ”

I stopped right there, because I knew after that I would no longer be turned on.

    • Sqwirk says:

Looked at objectively the conflict in America at the moment is between inherited wealth (the tea party movement etc) and democracy (the president elected with a 7% majority and a 30% majority with younger voters).

Is America turning into Latin America?

      • Dhoti says:

        Objective? Perhaps. Wrong? Most definitely.

Let’s just say that there aren’t a lot of Maybachs and Canali suits at the tea party rallies. In fact, isn’t that the usual party line — working-class, uneducated rednecks demonstrating against the evil black man?

        Sheesh, stay on message!

        • Sqwirk says:

The groups organising and funding the tea party movement are for the most part funded via foundations representing inherited wealth.

There are wealthy backers from, relatively, privillaged backgrounds on the centre and centre left (e.g. Warren Buffett) but they were not inheritors of large fortunes.

Whereas nearly all the conservative/libertarian foundations/think tanks source their funding from those dynastic fortunes. They represent that interest against the public interest (which of course is why they argue there is no such thing as the public interest).
And they are anti-democratic as all aristocracies have been throughout history.

          • bitterclown says:

I’m not rich, but I would still like a chance to be rich or at least richer someday… Nothing wrong with that and I don’t begrudge any rich person their fortune. And like Dhoti said, most of the folks at these town hall meetings and tea party demostrations are middleclass. I don’t see the connection with well funded conservative think tanks.

          • Dhoti says:

            Cite, please.

          • Naqamel says:

You have got to be kidding. It’s the LEFT, backed by George Soros (a former NAZI – well, he’s still a NAZI) and others who are organizing astro-turf movements.

In fact, the CNN MSM types have already criticized the Tea Party Movement for not having a single message. Well, duh, because they’re a bunch of grass roots people and not bussed in to protest like the ACORN/SEIU/Soros types.

            • mothergoose says:

Please check out Freedom Works, a right-wing group led by Dick Armey who was the organizer for many of the tea parties and 9/12 “march”.

            • ewwee says:

Soros is a Hungarian Jew. He is many things – few of them good (just ask the British Banking System) but he is not a Nazi.

            • No1askedme says:

Both parties participate in shady smear tactics, don’t be a hypocrite. The “tea-baggers” (LOL) don’t have a uniform message, so why are they all protesting together? It defies all reason! You protest specific things like tax changes, war, foreign policy, concrete stuff like that. If you’re just going out and protesting everything our ELECTED OFFICIALS are doing, that’s called “bitching.” Both sides are guilty of organizing “protests” like these, and most of them (like the “tea-baggers”) are found out to be the fabrications of politicians/the media in the first few days. Also, I don’t know who George Soros is, but I can guarantee that he isn’t a nazi, because nazis are fascists and democrats embrace some socialistic ideas. Fascists hate socialism in every possible way, you’re accusation doesn’t make any sense! If any group is like the nazis it’s the “religious right” nutters, they really are fascists. I would back up my arguments, but evidently proof is unimportant to you, as you have yet to provide any. Try thinking for yourself for once.

              • froofrou the Barenaked Lady says:

If you’ve got cites for right wing astro-turfing, I’d love to see them, No1. I’ve tried to find them on my own, but when I type stuff like that into search engines online, or search for plants at town hall meetings, all I get is a long list of stories about the people paid to disrupt protests (the SEIU) and beat people up, and the people paid (or at least asked) to ask certain planted questions of the president during town hall meetings. I mean, the last several plants belonged to the Obama campaign in some way, including the lady dying of cancer (who, in fact, did have medical insurance that she claimed not to have), the so called doctor supporting the healthcare bill in Texas who wasn’t actually a doctor, and the little 9 year old kid asking a question that was way out of her league. All of these people were found to have close ties to the Administration, either through satellite groups or specific ties through fundraising and campaigning.

I want to believe, here! I just can’t find the evidence that people asking questions of people like Barney Frank and other Dems who are shut down in very mean ways (like the guy who was told that urine wouldn’t even be wasted on him) are anything but normal people who are honestly worried.

Just because a big-name organization is lending money to help organize does not equal astro-turfing in the ways that it’s being done in other areas with actual plants who are getting paid to do certain things. I’d say the same thing if it was Soros funding them and not trying to be an ass and sway with paid plants.

                • Maxwell Silverhammer says:

There’s a certain democrat, I forget his name, which is sad because I’m in awe everytime he speaks. Who’s in his state’s senate. I see him on CNN often because they know whoever they put him up against he’ll shut them down. He speaks eloquently, knows his material and best of all, is the most civil debater… ever I might go so far as to say he’s a Master Debater (heeheehee). I wish he would go to those town hall meetings because he could answer and reassure everyone on their questions..
But, in answer to your question, I have no doubts that the woman in question was NOT a plant. I know she’s not, I just said that she’s normal. And if she IS the norm of the thought process of most people opposing this bill, then I’m just fearful of the future, because I know those people are breeding.

                • Maxwell Silverhammer says:

And technically… Barney Frank said “Arguing with you would be like arguing with a dining room table, I have no interest in doing it.” :-D
Which in all senses, it needed to be said, because if you ask a stupid question….

                  • froofrou the Barenaked Lady says:

But that’s kind of my point. The people are normal, have been warped by whatever they’ve seen on whatever blog they’ve read or news show they’ve seen (I refuse to get specific here due to my black little Conservative heart :-) ), and are asking questions that to us might be stupid, but to them are pretty important. If all they’ve heard is that Obama wants to kill Granny, isn’t it a disservice to simply shut down that person with a flippant statement as opposed to saying “Clearly, we aren’t going to have Death Panels, and here’s the section of the bill that proves it”?

Just ignoring or dismissing ignorance isn’t going to make it go away. In fact, it will just make it worse.

And Barney Frank should be spanked for saying that, hehe. Preferably not by one of the dudes he’s got in his basement ;-)

                    • CyanEyed says:

                      ^ Win.

                    • Maxwell Silverhammer says:

I think where most people find frustration with that froo is that the death panel thing has been shut down… again, and again. But the problem is that these people with these concerns claim that CNN and MSNBC (where these facts have been stated) are considered the evil liberal media machine, so, if you’re going to ignore one side of the issue and only follow one, you’re not interested in the truth, you’re interested in only causing a stir. I mean this is America ffs. Death panels? Seriously?
I find it hard to believe that THAT many conservatives actually believe that there are enough people in this country who support that kind of thing to think that it holds any water whatsoever. It also doesn’t help that people like Rush and Glenn Beck do NOTHING but sow discontent and mistrust. When you do that, you’re just going to propagate this kind of behavior and thinking which will do nothing, but make your own side look bad.

      • Libby says:

Erm, he was elected with a 2-3% majority (53%), perhaps you meant a 7% margin?

    • No1askedme says:

      @ Sheesh
All that stuff is OLD news, and hardly news at all… Some morons think that ACORN engaged in voter fraud, people are protesting the government’s actions; oohhhh big news. Besides, the government has little say about what the media says about goings on in this country, the only real government intervention in media I’ve ever seen is related to events in other countries. Also, CNN is hardly a liberal propaganda machine, but you probably watch FOX so I know reason is probably a foreign concept to you. I don’t know what this “green czar” thing is (makes me think of the jolly green giant, lol), or who John Edwards (the “psychic”?) is. I’ll go look that up when I get the chance, but I doubt they’re anything really more important than stuff like the health care bill…

      • Libby says:

Erm….the ACORN thing that’s currently in the media is apparently many of their staffers were caught on tape giving advice on how to set up a tax-free business of pimping out 13 year old prostitutes, or something along those lines. I don’t know because I haven’t bothered to investigate the story directly myself. But then again, I don’t spend lots of time investigating most news stories, I just skim them and move on. Especially ones like this one which seems to be fairly important news if you are a government official who has supported taxpayer funding of ACORN, but otherwise unimportant until election time comes around, when I do alot more research once the hype has died down and the bias on either side of the issue has had a better chance of being exposed.

As for John Edwards, he was a presidential candidate in the previous election cycle. Apparently there is some scandal to do with his love life. I don’t know what that has to do with hard cracking news, unless it has to do with corruption in the government, which would be something that has probably gotten the coverage it deserves.

        • No1askedme says:

Meh, neither of those are real headliners. I admit I haven’t heard of them, but I don’t really care about it because it has nothing to do with current event. Also I’ve been studying for two college exams since last week, I haven’t had the time to indulge myself in such silliness.

          • Libby says:

Yeah, but there’s only so much “real” headline news on any given day/week/month, but they still have their time/inches to fill, and the public’s attention span has collectively shortened to the point where they can’t spend 5-10 minutes on one story unless there’s lots of juicy details.

            • Wazzit says:

Sheesh is saying that the Lame Stream Media ignores any story that might hurt the Democrats, or protects them better than the Secret Service ever could. Obama IS ACORN and they helped get him elected and he repaid them with billions in stimulus money- now they’re in deep doodoo but Nothing….crickets chirping…from CNN ( which is the 2nd most biased newssite (second to MSNBC)) at all. And Democratic presidential candidate Edwards had an affair and love child with one of his staff while HIS WIFE WAS BEING TREATED FOR CANCER and again, nothing from the media- it took The National Enquirer to break that story. Hundreds of thousands of people march on Washington- and the media ignores it ( because they are not Democrats), the Racist, self avowed Communist Green Czar appointed by Obama is forced to resign- and nothing in the Media at all. Had any of this occurred with Bush, we would have had hourly bulletins for months. The Lame Stream Media is no longer any different from PRAVDA. Nothing but wall to wall lies and propaganda.

              • CyanEyed says:

What are you doing posting a rant at 6:31 AM? Not that it isn’t true, but you should probly be doing something else at that time, like eating breakfast.

  5. lowly grunt says:

Eh. Sunday was yesterday and the sermon I heard was a lot better than this.

  6. Smartz says:

Hey, that’s not fair to call those guys “the media”…it could be a photography convention.

…But don’t worry, I get the message behind the picture. Not saying the media is bad, as we definitely need it, but it is true that the majority of media (rather, United States’ media) today is totally useless/trivial, always pointing out just “news of interest” like on Morning Shows, and the pseudo-news shows that focus on celebrities and gossip. Then there are the pundits that are deluded to think they are like “reporters” of the political world. Keith Olberman (who was originally a sports reporter) and Bill O’Reilly (who was a former anchor of the tabloid show Inside Edition) are a couple of examples of TV personalities who claim to have “journalistic experience” but rather, their reporting should be left in newspaper OP-ED sections.

It is a sad time for news these days…the times of Murrow, Cronkite, Brokaw and Jennings are fading away.

    • mothergoose says:

Olbermann and Maddow are far more “pundit” than journalist, as are most of Fox News Commentators… I’m still looking for one good source of journalism, maybe I should start watching the BBC…

      • paws4thot says:

I wouldn’t bother; American right-wing partisan cr@p isn’t the only sort of cr@p in broadcast journalism these days. Blatently pre-approved questions are wrong regardless of who asks them.

      • viking gal says:

The Beeb isn’t bad, and they do cover major US news…

      • Rando the Floydist says:

But Olbermann’s brand of crazy is flat out entertaining in a totally guilty pleasure kind of way. :D

        • froofrou the Barenaked Lady says:

I gave it the old college try watching him the other night, and I ended up having to turn off the TV altogether because the stress was causing contractions to start :-) I’m going to try again soon to see if I can coax this baby into getting here already, although Olbermann might scare him back to where he came from, hehe.

          • Rando the Floydist says:

I’m personally a fan of his World’s Worst Persons segment, which regularly has Rush Limbaugh in it. ;)

            • Wazzit says:

Of course you do- you’re a little hate filled troll. Can’t stand that First Amendment thingy, can you?

            • CyanEyed says:

Lol, it does? That’s fantastically pathetic.
Couldn’t he find a dictator or terrorist somewhere instead of a freakin’ talk radio show host?

              • froofrou the Barenaked Lady says:

Because Olbermann is a pundit, is in almost direct competition with Limbaugh, and has the right (as a free citizen of the US) to do it.

I think it’s hilarious, personally, that he views Limbaugh as such a threat, and if he wants to put him on his World’s Worst Person segment, go for it!

      • randman83 says:

I try to get most of my news online. I have a series of sites I go to, like drudge and some of the network sites (cnn, fox, etc.). For me, its mostly just listening to them talk and say their opinions that bugs me. Online, I can focus on the topic and go do a little independent research to confirm the validity of the story.

        • Maxwell Silverhammer says:

Bravo! That’s what I do. I mostly watch CNN and Fox to laugh at people and how their skewed thinking clouds the issues.

      • No1askedme says:

I just look up topics through Wikipedia and follow the citation links. I usually wind up with a concrete document at some point if I follow the citations long enough. I also use some sites like factcheck.com or government operated site that provide access to documentation. I try my best to avoid news sites, unless I’m looking for a laugh.

  7. Cuddlee says:

News like “One Squirrel, one Cup”? ;)

  8. marzx says:

you know those photographers are sports photographers right? … at the Olympics right?…. (this comes from Gizmodo or one of the other buyers of this image)

now I think sports is a big fat yawn but most of these guys aren’t paparazzi when not at the Olympics they are probably shooting any one of the “football” codes or baseball or cricket or basketball or something else that passes as sport. Some will be “event” photographers (Golden Globe etc) and a few, a very few, may even be paparazzi in their slack time.

and actually most of those lenses aren’t that much you know for a “tool of the trade” even as a part timer I own several high end lenses much as these. You prioritise and don’t spend money on other stuff (I don’t own a TV or any games console or blue ray player so don’t blow my money on them or the media/games for them I searched out the lenses cheap through local pros who are upgrading, so for less than the cost of fully specked laptop I got a full pro kit of lenses (the trinity of L series f/2.8 zooms (16-35, 248-70,70-200) and several 2.8 or faster L series telephoto primes) that, at most, only one model behind the current models.

    • keithybabes says:

That comment was even more boring than the lol, if possible.

      • I like my americans with andalouse sauce.

        • keithybabes says:

My dear fellow, let’s not be uncivil to our hosts. Once you’ve taken the piss and beaten the crap out of them they’re perfectly tasty with just a smattering of gentleman’s relish.

      • paws4thot says:

I found it interesting, and factually correct. By and large people who own that sort of lens are specialist sports photographers.

        • JW. says:

I agree with this… nevermind the fact that most of the photographers in the picture have a company they work for, and the really high $ gear usually belongs to the company, since there are some lenses that Canon makes that aren’t really “for sale” but you can lease them for about what you would lease a decent mid-sized sedan.

  9. Charlene says:

You could. Just stop paying them (and I’m not exaggerating this) 1,000 times more for a photo of Paris Hilton drunk than you do for a photo of real news.

I know a news photographer working in the Middle East. He gets about $200 for every image the wire service picks up. His colleagues working in Hollywood can get anything from $50,000 to $250,000 for one image.

The problem is not the media.

    • Brian says:

This guy gets it. It’s easy to forget what with the government bailing out anything that moves, but for those of us old enough to remember there was once a time where there was this thing called “supply” which was dictated in large part by another thing called “demand”.

      • paws4thot says:

Anyone posting under the name “Charlene” is unlikely to be a guy! ;) Oh and no-one is forcing the meedja to buy images of LiLo, Paris et al, at any price.

        • ay dios mio says:

Holding a gun to their head no, but we as a society are certainly telling them to do it every time we buy one of those gossip magazines. Stop making those pics worth so much, and they’ll stop paying the low lives who take them.

  10. Sheesh says:

Actually, they’re following Michelle Obama as she shops for lettuce…..

  11. Aderyn says:

marzx is right. This is a photo of sport photographers from the olympics. It was widely discussed because it shows more photographers using Nikon gear (black lenses) than Canon gear (white lenses). This is remarkable, because Canon has been very dominant in the industry for the past twenty years, with Nikon users in minority. This seems to have changed now.

  12. Blarg says:

News outlets finding news? HA!! None of those 24 hour news networks are actual news organizations any more. They’re just as commercialized as any other business out there today. They’re focused on viewers and ad space, not on legitimate, unbiased headlines. They know what their demogrtaphics are, and know what sells to that particular audience, and they will always play into each individual crowd’s tendencies. Oh well, the best you can do at this point is watch a bit from all of them, and try to get a full picture from seeing both sides of the idiocy that is modern cable news reporting.

    • No1askedme says:

Very well put! I can’t help but think the government should pass some sort of “Truth in News Media” bill, but I can’t even begin to figure out how one could be made that doesn’t have the potential for massive abuse.

      • Maxwell Silverhammer says:

I dunno, we could always institute a “Beaten with a bat” provision into the bill where if unverifiable info, or false information is reported, the public is allowed one good swing at them with a bat… while they’re hogtied.

  13. Lllll. says:

…”Closed captioning provided by the maker of the following product…”…

  14. Train the media??? WTF???… Way to go nazi
