So what’s your morning commute like?
(An American Soldier)

Must be from Los Angeles.
Nope–no illegals selling stuff on the off-ramps.
My morning commute is taking the subway to university, so that hopefully one day I’ll be able to help find and/or improve a good source of renewable energy so we won’t have to invade countries to steal their oil anymore. Next question please.
(I’m not anti-military and actually I respect the hard work soldiers do. Sometimes it is important work. But I’m fed up with people making it look like the only thing that matters is risking your life and killing people).
You do realize there are enough sources here to supply us, even at current consumption levels, if only our elected officials allowed it, right?
That actually kind of proves Yelp’s point.
Not really.
…and you get your statistics from where, exactly?
Tar sands in the Dakotas and Montana, oil shale in Colorado, Wyoming, and Utah, as well as the offshore stuff in CA and the Gulf of Mexico. Oh wait–you mean those rigs the Chinese are building less than 40 miles from us? Yeah, nothing there, move along.
like i replied already texas has more power in low-sulfur coal than saudi arabia has in oil but the democrats are perfectly content to “save the atmosphere” while countries all over the world are still doing it.
You do realize the world is not limited to the USA, and people from other countries are human beings too?
There is not enough oil for everyone, and if third world countries suddenly became wealthy and consumed as much as the USA, the planet would consume the remaining oil 10 times faster.
Anyway my point was not just about oil. There are plenty of useful jobs that make a big contribution to our lives, our comfort, and our future and which are not related to the military.
My anger here is against those people who think the USA are threatened by dozens of foreign countries who dream to invade them and military force is the only answer.
First of all, the threat is real and we need soldiers to protect us against it. But the threat is not as important as those people think, and military force is not the only solution.
Help people in the Middle East go to school and get proper education, and you will divide religious fanatism by 10.
So:
- Protecting society from potential enemies is not the only useful thing that can be done for society.
- Military force is not even the only protection against potential enemies.
Share the glory please.
Yelp..
You get 90,000 internets for being perhaps the most rational person I have EVER read on PK!!!! Keep it up.
Thank you.
Thank you for the compliment. I like what you have to say too.
ya i no wat you mean. texas has more energy in coal than saudi arabia has in oil wtf with that?!?
p.s. wow i got on the front page twice in one day.
“I’ll be able to help find and/or improve a good source of renewable energy so we won’t have to invade countries to steal their oil anymore.”
So gas at $4 a gallon proves your point…. how?
Oh, right, it doesn’t
If we wanted to invade somebody for oil, you do realize it would have been Canada, right? Closer, cheaper to extract, and a smaller military to defeat.
Not to mention that they are already our largest supplier of the stuff.
The lol today: Military with definite chance of sh!tstorm.
Judging from the last few soldier themed lols, we should be at about 600-700 by the end of the day … any bets?
Nah, 350-400, tops.
Don’t worry. My fingers are tired today.
So’s your ass…
From what? I pwned evey comment that came my way, including yours. Why don’t you do make your sexists remarks elsewhere.
There is something to be said about the mentality of someone who thinks in the terms…..pwned……
That he plays video games?
That he has cats.
Oh the irony of someone with a cat avatar saying that.
You should really look up the definition of the word irony….
I think you meant Obvious.
Oh, the arrogance…..
You should really look up the definition of the word arrogance…. I think you meant ironic.
No, I mean arrogance. People who think they are better by winning in any form, then being disrespectful about it. Just arrogant egos. Especially one who thinks they smack everyone else around. Even more so when they DON’T.
Its ok pittypat. One gets used to the idea of the frightened right latching onto to words that they think will have an effect and then using them until the run the word into the ground. Everytime some close minded, right wing, pro war, pro poverty, pro “love it or leave it” attitude calls me arrogant, I just hear the word “Maverick” and it helps me go about my day.
Well, I was kind of just word playing there, spoofing on Max’s prior post. I agree with you Victor, *and* I think you’re an arrogant bastard but it’s only occasionally intolerable
Frighted right? Pssst, You don’t know me for sure. But that’s ok, most of us here know that you make up what ever gets you through the day. You have a chip on your shoulder and go around bashing anyone that doesn’t agree with you.
Have your opinion, but by God, let others have theirs. And just so you know, you haven’t pwned anyone. You simply screamed wharbergarble at the top of your arrogant lungs.
It’s okay for that area. You don’t seem to tea bag people you somehow think you’ve conquered on here. Time and place.
Maybe I’m reading them wrong or something, but I’ve noticed more and more of these types of lols. And the thing that gets me is that Soldiers worth their salt don’t serve so they can win pissing contests with civilians and say, “Oh yeah, well beat this…” Because that amounts to whining. Service to country isn’t a license to guilt trip, and I’m pretty sure this captioner is a civilian who doesn’t quite get that. Or a young gun who needs more stripes on his arm. Maybe that’s why it’s Tommy.223 instead of tommy5.56?
And I’m sure you’re just gonna rush right out and tell us the difference between .223 and 5.56, right? (Hint: think SAAMI.)
Good catch! Also, good insight. Probably posted by a civilian.
actually thats my lucky number (had four classrooms in college with that number, my mailbox, and my parking spot)
We get it. Being a soldier is so hard. Noone who signed up for the military knew they would get shot at. Who are we blaming this on today?
Obummer for keeping them there….
He didn’t send them there. That was the past failure in chief.
Of course, terrorist bombing our pentagon and killing our civilians had nothing to do with it…
Yeah, but since Bush was such a “good Christian” you would think he would have turned the other cheek, not killed several thousand people, limited American personal freedoms, and invaded two countries.
That’s not exactly how Christianity works…….Jesus went all fire and brimstone several times when people were in the wrong.
I forget that verse where Jesus killed people. Which one was that? Actually… has Bush gotten on TV and did a lot of yelling it would have been one thing, similiar to when Jesus chased the swine from the church. Don’t remember Jesus saying “Its ok to kill”. In fact, he asked his father to forgive the very people that were about to kill him.
Considering that the basic premise of Christianity is that evildoers will get burned in Hell for all of eternity, after having been subjected to mass killings, pestilence, floods, and war in the End Times, I’d say that your preconceived idea of Christianity is leaving a few things out. Jesus Himself comes back in the end to finish the destruction of the earth before rebuilding it. Pretty gnarly to me.
I think you are making my point for me. For a person who is a “good Christian” in this “good Christian” nation, we should be letting G_d take care of the mass killings and plague, and we shouldn’t be doing it ourselves. I think that particular commandment went “Thall shall not kill.”
Thou shalt not MURDER. There is a difference there.
And if you’ll read the Bible, you’ll notice that God has PEOPLE take care of the killing in the end times. He just sanctions it.
I think you need to re-read the commandments, I’ve NEVER seen “thou shalt not murder” in ANY bible published before 1900s….
VNV, I thought you said your fingers were tired today???
You are supposed to turn the other check when someone attacks you, personally. You are not supposed to turn the other check when someone attacks people you were elected and are paid to protect. You can’t turn your check for an entire country!
Protection Fail. He totally let the Pentagon get hit. The Pentagon?!
You may not be able to turn your cheek for an entire country, but you could have not invade two of your own.
I’ll give you that Iraq was a hold-over from Daddy, but Afganistan was where the terror attacks originated and should be considered a defensive move in terms of trying to defend ourselves from future attacks.
I would think that defending ourselves would be as simple as airport security. Didn’t realize it required an invasion. And now we have a huge population that will blame to US for the death of one of their loved ones. The victims of 9/11 can’t blame Afghanistan, because it was just a small organization that operated within its borders.
Is there any point in me trying to refute you at this stage, or shall I just move on to greener pastures, leaving you to bask in your moral superiority and grasp of how the world works?
I perused that. I have no desire to get into it with someone who has a preconceived idea of the world based on things read and who will not open up their minds to a different point of view. It’s a waste of time.
Thats funny. Cause i would have used the “preconceived idea of the world based on things read and who will not open up their minds to a different point of view” on the people who aregue from the far right perspective. Funny thing about politics, if someone doesn’t agree with you its because they are closed minded. The only probably is that the majority of people that argue from your camp have a “thigs are as good as it gets and ain’t no changing it” attitude, while people from different camps are the ones thinking outside the box. But please, don’t bother refuting me. It won’t do any good.
VNV: I’m not closed minded. NOW DON’T REFUTE ME CAUSE I’M RIGHT AND YOU’RE WRONG!!!11!!!
So basically you are saying that VNV=Wharabagurble?
Ok, I second that vote.
Afghanistan was retaliatory, not defensive.
I agree invading Afghanistan made a lot more sense than Iraq. Even France is there, and that means enough for me to think carefully about it before saying Afghanistan was a mistake.
But 100′000 civilians died in Afghanistan because of this war. Whether they were killed by U.S. forces or Taliban, they were killed because of the war the USA started over there.
100′000 civilian deaths are not worth avenging 3000 deaths in my opinion.
Still, tight airport security is not an answer to me. Al Qaeda had to feel someone was after them and was not going to let them sleep peacefully and plot more attacks after that. It’s also important to show every terrorist group in the world that they won’t get away with their crimes.
But again, was that worth 100′000 civilian deaths? I’m not sure. I think this war could had been plotted better so as to reduce civilians deaths considerably.
I think even if reducing civilian deaths had meant losing more troops, then it should had been done. I thought soldiers were supposed to protect the weak and defenseless, regardless of nationality, even if that meant risking their own lives.
I also believed harming civilians was considered a war crime. But it seems to many people it’s now OK to bomb a city and kill 1000 civilians along with the enemy instead of sending in troops and losing a few men. That’s pretty sad.
I’m glad I know some soldiers on the field take the decision on their own to risk their own lives to avoid risking civilian casualties. If it wasn’t for these guys I would had lost all faith in the military already.
But, the US did not start the war over there, the terrorists started the war. They are responsible (the Taliban and Alqueda) for the deaths, however many there have been (not sure of your numbers). If the enemy hides within civilian populations and they get hit, then it is the enemies fault. No one wants to harm civilians, except terrrorist.
But you have to consider the necessity of tracking down these terrorists and stopping them.
I’m not sure exactly why the USA decided to track them down. I guess both for vengeance and for avoiding future attacks.
Is this worth starting a war that killed so many people?
If the USA had not started this war and a second, attack happened and another 3000 or 4000 American civilians had died, would it be worse than causing the deaths of 100′000 to 200′000 Middle Eastern civilians?
They are foreigners, and even though I consider all humans equal I understand a country’s desire to protect itself. But that still seems to me like a high price to pay to protect American lives.
Assuming 100′000 Afghani and Iraqi civilians died (in case the 200′000 I found is exaggerated), it’s still a rate of 33 Iraqi/Afghani lives for 1 American life (66/1 if the 200′000 is correct).
Are these people really worth that little just because they don’t have an American passport? They are not different from the people who died in the 9/11 attacks (unless if you knew some of the victims personally) except they were born and live where the terrorists are hiding.
I think we just went too far with treating people of other nationalities differently.
>I also believed harming civilians was considered a war crime.
Not since the nuking of Japan in WWII. That moved the goal posts a bit but it was still okay, apparently.
He LET the Pentagon get hit? Was he out there with a big sheild and let it down for a minute to get a ciggy? If he was at all to blame for not stopping the attack, ex-Pres Clinton has to take some of that blame too.
Also, he didn’t invade any other countries to kill other innocents the way they did to us. We invaded to STOP them from doing it again in the future, and in the process protecting the innocent people in those counties from the bad people that oppress them. Remember the Taliban?
LMAO, “get a ciggy.” LMAO
Didn’t you know that he also, single-handedly, caused the destruction of New Orleans? He had these giant fans strategically placed to create a Cat 5 hurricane and then kept moving the fans so that it would hit NO. LOL
Well Texas is jealous of Alaska, so he thought to expand the border a little, he was hoping to see his buddy Vlad from there, but Palin got in the way.
It will take a while to undo the sh*#storm that the Shrub unleashed upon us, unfortunately. Plus, what the heck did Iraq have to do with the 9/11 bombings? There were NO iraqis involved in that, and the trumped up BS that Bush came up with as an excuse to invade Iraq (gee, remember them trying to sell us the ‘WMDs’?) Bin Laden is a Saudi who was working out of Afghanistan, remember? But, after all, they didn’t have any oil!
A war for oil. That’s clearly why I paid $4 a gallon all last year, and am currently paying more than $2 more than I should be now *rolls eyes*
I feel sorry for the US citizens who have to pay $4 for a gallon of petrol. Way too much.
Come live in the UK, where it’s only £1.05 a litre. much cheaper.
*quickly does math*
*checks exchange rate*
Ah, there we are. Come to the UK, where it’s only $8.15 a gallon. Much cheaper.
Taxes! Taxes! How’s that semi socialism going for yah? (bada bing!)
As much as I agree those groups who were involved in the 9/11 attacks had to be stopped, I don’t understand how invading Iraq would help.
Also, considering 200′000 Iraqi and Afghani civilians died because the USA wanted to avenge 3000 civilian deaths, I’m kind of worried the USA tends to overreact. And don’t blame the Taliban: the USA knew starting these wars would cause such a high number of civilian casualties therefore they should had done things differently.
The USA (and more specifically Bush and his administration) have made a huge mistake and have treated these civilians as inferior to Americans. The USA should come to realize this and admit their mistake.
And Bush should face trial in court. I don’t care if he gets away with it or not; for me it’s not about seeing him get punished I just want to see his actions being judged. That would be a great step forward into acknowledging something was wrong.
Once again, you blame Bush and America when the blame should rest squarely on the ones that initiated and still threaten the free world. They are the ones that don’t care about civilian deaths.
bitterclown, didn’t your mother ever teach you that two wrongs don’t make a right?
Blame isn’t a black or white thing. Just because wrongs were perpetrated by one side, this does not exonerate retributive, equally evil deeds by the other side.
Further “the free world” is such a furphy. Please be honest and say that you mean “the USA and it’s commercial interests”.
Yes, she did, and that works just fine on the playground. But not with nations and leaders who are responsible for the safety of innocents. Yes, the FREE world is exactly what I meant. There are other free nations besides the US that look to us for protection. You are quite naive.
You are reducing Iraqi and Afghani civilian casualties to simple collateral damage. These are human being too, just like the people who died in 9/11.
Nationality is not everything. In fact it’s nothing, because all these Iraqis and Afghans would need is an American passport and all of a sudden the USA would roar in outrage that the government started a war that killed between 100′000 and 200′000 American civilians to avenge the death or avoid the possible killing of 3000 civilians.
If, say, only 20′000 civilians had died in Iraq and Afghanistan to avoid another 9/11, I would be able to excuse the USA by saying they were worried to protect themself. But we have somewhere between 100′000 and 200′000 dead Iraqi and Afghan civilians! It’s way too disproportionate, the USA should has looked at the bigger picture.
I also blame the terrorists for hiding near civilians and using them as cover, you can be sure of that. But the USA knew from the start that the Taliban would use civilians to protect themselves.
That’s why I think the USA had a responsibility to avoid this war (or plan it better in order to considerably reduce civilian casualties).
Imagine you are outside of a building with thousands of people locked in there. One of them is a terrorist who just shot a few people in your neighborhood.
He’s all alone in one room, and you have to throw a grenade to take him out. Or you can let him be, he won’t harm anybody in the building but he may come back to your neighborhood in several years and shoot a few other people.
But here is the catch: the terrorist leaked methane gas in the entire building, and your grenade, while it won’t hit innocents directly, will cause the whole building to explode, killing or injuring almost everyone in there.
Do you throw the grenade?
I understand what you are saying, yes innocents suffer and die in war and its bad. No one likes war, I don’t. But letting thugs go unpunished is even worse because they tend to multiply and in the end even more innocents would suffer. Anyway, I’m sure if there was another way it would be prefered. War is hard on the world, it’s hard on the environment too. But, what if you were one of those women in Afghanistan that was forced to wear a burka and stay in your home when you had been a trained professional all your life, or had no male relatives to help you? Would you blame the US or the Taliban for any collateral damage?
That looks like the same hottie that had the bandoleer of Mk.19 grenades. Yum!
At last someone sees that! Damn she’s really hot!
I was thinking the same thing.
OMG. That’s a woman???? No offence soldier girl, I really didn’t pick that up (which isn’t a bad thing – i mean, there is no reason why gender should come into warfare).
But hot???
Male or female, it seems some people have weird, cammouflag-ey fetishes. I don’t find an overdressed, over heated, dusty, androgenous figure “hot”. But maybe that’s just me.
Thankfully I saw it from the get go. Her eyebrows, the soft curving edge of her face, and even her lips. Rad ;D
oh it is both pics were uploaded by the same person. How the hell did they get 2 in the front page in 2 days?
That’s easy. It’s because she’s *HOT*. I would love to see a few pics of her with just that bandoleer of grenades.
Well, I got out of bed and walked down the hallway, through the living room, stopped in the kitchen, and came into this room and sat down here. Is it five o’clock yet?
The STUPID has seriously invaded the lol builder, lately. Is this really the best caption for this picture? Nothing else was, y’know, funny?
Yeah, yeah, make my own…..
Yea… because she had no idea what she was getting herself into, we should all be so thankful its them and not us!… right….
I dunno if the soldiers are whining so much. I personally get a good chuckle out of these and it also helps put things into a bit of perspective. My life could be a lot worse, I could be fighting the war to liberate the people of Detroit *nods*
Yup.. a tank would REALLY help me blast through those roadworks on my daily commute. And those guys in the white utes that tailgate me through the mountain bends…. boom! take THAT sucker!!!! mwahahaaha!!
I like.
Damnit. More of these military kids posing w/ weapons or destruction in some effort to look “awesome”. But it’s not so much the pictures, but the captions that kill me.
I’m going to post a picture of a toilet and caption it “WHAT WAS YOUR LAST MEAL LIKE?”
you had taco bell?
HOT POCKETS!!!!
Death pockets..
*He sure makes a lot of jokes about food*
That’s not even a big amount of damage. Really nothing to brag about. The fact she’s holding an M-16 means more than likely she’s combat support and hardly left the base. So this little fire cracker was exciting to her.
HEY its bandolier-girl!!! she is still hot!
OH girl you dont wantz to know whatz my morning commutes was like! i was all like slowed down and traffic was backed up to the freeway, and i split coffee on my lap, and some truck was all drivin slow and stuff.
We havent had a firefighter/hero pic up today..somebody get on that!
With a CAT! We need a firefighter with a CAT!
No, we don’t.
And the hero and the cat should have the same little soot smudge on the side of their noses.
All together now: “Aaaaaawwwwww!”
Hey,
If you want to show soldier pictures, why don’t xou take some pics that tell more of the truth? There are nice pictures from Abu Ghraib for example, or Gitmo?
Let me add, there are pictures with females from Abu Ghraib too. I am sure many Americans will find the lady sexy too.
You mean the pics of the people that performed those acts in jail? Or a pic of the soldier that cared about people enough to turn his fellow soldiers in for doing those things?
Pics of both would be nice. Btw, what happened to the brave guy who leaked the photos?
And how long was that stuff going on before somebody came by who cared about the people?
My day sucked before my commute. About 5 mins before my alarm went off, my cat jumped up on the bed and landed with all four feet…on my nuts.
But I don’t see anybody uploading pics of me.
/tongueincheek
Your cat can fit all 4 paws on your nuts? This might be relevant to my interests….
tiny cat OR giant inflamed testicles… if it’s option 2 this would be really not relevant to your interests because that’s usually from STDs.
just lookin’ out for you diss!
ROFL to both of you. It was one set after the other.
I won’t claim to have manhood of anything other than the appropriate size.
One SET after the other?!?
I have a hard enough time protecting two individuals.
ROFL!!! One set of PAWS after the other, front then back!
Sounds like your cat is into groping..
Lol…and ouch!
I would have uploaded it–had I stopped laughing long enough to take the picture.
My morning commute? It was like always; a clean, comfortable citybus using biofuel. Smooth and relaxing, perfect for checking the news online. Why do you ask?
Mine, longer than yours, but at least it wasn’t 100F in the shade, and no-one was trying kill me.
That woman has never left the FOB..she is simply posing in front of a HMMV that was towed back to base…POG!
Points for Yelp and VNV, you other guys are too busy talking about each other’s failness and this new word: Arrogance. Y’all get that from a think-tank this morning or something?
And stop with the “I’m in the military; what did you do today?” propaganda. Or lest I forget that we spend more on our military then on all of our domestic measures combined– So I guess keep trucking on that military-badassness while the homeland crumbles… who needs education and infrastructure? Not U.S.
Nope–try again. Social Security is the largest single expenditure of the federal government and has been for about 20 years now.
BUDGETARY FAIL.
*snerk*
I’m sorry…did you just say we spend more on Social Security than Defense?
LMAROOPK (laughing my @ss right out of pundit kitchen)
I was thinking the same thing about the “think tank” me and my gf were discussing yesterday how the Republican party spends more than 1 million dollars a day just on people to go out and talk trash about the new healthcare proposal. She is now insiting that (maybe not paid) but we have similiar individuals on PK. People with no real points other than to use key words to try and scare tactic people away from a particular point. I don’t know if its true, but as soon as the first perosn used arrogant it became the “WMD” of the day!
Hmm, NHSparky, I’ll temporarily stoop down to your level, KNOWLEDGE FAIL.
Let’s look at the books:
http://www.cbo.gov/ftpdocs/105xx/doc10521/08-25-BudgetUpdate.pdf
Begin on page 13, and to make understanding easier for the public, I’ll only use the 2009 data. For U.S. operations in Iraq and Afghanistan and ‘other war-related activities’: 154 Billion. Good.
Page 18, Military and Veteran Retirement: 100 Billion.
Next, try page 20. Budget Authority Defense: 695 Billion. Outlays Defense: 657 Billion.
Military Defense spending: 1.6 Trillion dollars. And that’s not including the vague ‘Non defense’ spending involved.
Social Security, listed on page 18, 678 Billion.
678 Billion < 1.6 Trillion.
Let me add to NHSparky's new commendations: RESEARCH FAIL.
Pwned
*Shows NHSparky offstage* Thanks for playing, better luck next time!
Sometimes I wonder if all the captions are the work of some 17 year old putz that couldn’t hack ROTC.
Another arrogant pro-military, pro-violence caption. ** yawn **
Soldiers place themselves in harm’s way and have no right to act like they are better, as this caption indicates. So you did a bunch of macho bulls**t and killed innocent people, so f**king what?
Oh, and “how was my commute today?”… Mine was fine, because I’m not trying to go through a foreign country for an unjust war thank you very much.
