VNV- you have to know the REALITIES of a world before you can know what you're talking about. If you've read about murder, or war, you still don't know about murder or war. You know how to, of course, but you know NOTHING of either until you're forced to experience or commit them.

In other news, I think I love you, and may I recommend Terry Goodkind's "Faith of the Fallen"? If you haven't read it, it's my favorite of his books and a wonderful illustration of why capitalism works and VNV's plan doesn't.

If everything in life is just guaranteed to you, what's the point of working? What's the point of having a family? What's the point of living?
You know what the difference between us is? I like to think that there is more to life than having to live for everyone else, but refusing achievement for myself. You say "it can be done," but how is it going to get done if we all are pushed into complacency by a government that discourages hard work by taking away our incentive to work? I think that almost anything is possible, just like you do. But I see that the only ones who can make these things possible are the ones who do it, not because society needs it, or because they have been guilt-tripped into action by "greater good," but because they have a passion to do the thing they love, and a way to achieve it. Do you think that Henry Ford built a car because society needed cars? Society got along just fine without them until that point. He did it because he had a passion for the science that went into his invention. His own creativity was responsible for his achievement, not some arbitrary desire to serve "the common good." If a person feels the need to be charitable and determines it to be a valuable use of what they have earned, then they have every right to be so. But when a government mandates altruism, it ceases to be valuable. It becomes a guarantee, and that discourages achievement. You say that people who like capitalism like war, poverty and violence. But you couldn't be more wrong. War, poverty and violence are caused by oppression and complacency, and capitalism encourages exactly the opposite. Capitalist ideals, which you are clearly unfamiliar with, don't support the enslavement of the masses. Communism does. Capitalism doesn't take advantage of people by making them work for less than they deserve. Dishonest people do, and capitalism is destroyed by dishonesty. This is the only role government should have in a capitalist society. They should keep the dishonest people from screwing over others with fear, theft and coercion. The biggest reason communism fails time after time is because once a country adopts a communist mentality, it cannot pull itself from the ensuing downward spiral. Today, we have a president that encourages this "brother's keeper" mentality. He seeks to expand the government to proportions that Americans 50 years ago would've found unthinkable. I am sure of his intentions, and his intentions are to help people, and I can respect that. The problem with this is that we don't know who will have power in 10 years. 20 years. 100 years. We could elect the next Hitler, and because we handed over all of our rights to the government, we would be powerless to stop him. Our our government's job, as it is enumerated in the Constitution, is "To secure to blessings of liberty to ourselves and our posterity." In the end though, it comes down to us to keeps those blessings. We have the opportunity to achieve, but we also have the power to throw away our opportunity to achieve. Once we do that, there is no going back. Once we lose that right, we lose our purpose of living.

this ia a comment to come after isildo's post, but I can say that I need a PC way more than I need a TV. I haven't used a TV in ages.
How well could one do grad work without a PC?

I must admit. I am currently doing fine just working at the university to pay for school, and if given the chance of free education for the rest of my life, i would have no incentive to go out and just be productive.

I don't like to be a drain on society, but really so easily following my passion would mean i would be draining.

You piled socialist in with unAmerican, nice backtrack though.

Critiquing your government is a healthy thing to do, it's the only way to get a country to grow- in fact, I think critiquing the government and trying to find ways to make your country better is the most patriotic thing you can do. Just because they're a pessimist doesn't mean they're unAmerican.

I should point out that my comment is not about being for or against corporations and capitalism.
Competition is a corporate thing, that's gives companies an incentive to improve their products and services.
And preventing competition by using patents is also a corporate thing.

So we have powerful computers today because IBM did not act as a corporation and because other companies acted as corporations.

Greed is an incentive and it's fine to use it to a certain extent. But we have to set limits and upon reaching those limits we should put our greed aside.

By the way, did you know health care (rich paying for the poor) is good for everyone? Because death takes out a huge investment. A lower class worker may have little money but is still useful. Letting him die is a waste of precious resources for society.
So if the rich pay to save the lives of the poor, it eventually pays off because more workers means more stuff available (and faster improvement of technology, which considerably improves our lives. Think of computers, dishwashers, cars, etc.).
So in the end, it pays off.

Don't forget every scientist who improves our lifestyle quality has needs. He/she needs food, a house, a lawyer, a doctor, a car, entertainment, etc. That's where lower class workers step in.
Now if all these lower class workers died because they had no money, 90% of our scientists would have to take blue collar jobs to provide for their own needs and the needs of the other scientists.
That would mean less scientists, which would lead to slower technological improvement, which in turn leads to slower life quality and comfort improvement.

Did you know we have powerful PCs today because IBM did not adopt the corporate philosophy?
Having built the first PC, they could had put a patent on it, guaranteeing they were the only one authorized to produce it for a long, long time.
But they knew this would not improve PC technology. Letting other companies research this technology to improve it and having competition as an incentive to keep improving computers has done us a lot of good.
Thanks to IBM for using their brains and thinking of what would truly improve our lives instead of falling for the selfish corporate mentality.

I agree with you.
I'm worried one of these things could go off by accident and dig a hole in her chest or cut off her head. I heard they won't explode on impact with a human body but they will go right through it.
But maybe they're safe enough they won't shoot by accident unless if you beat them with a hammer?

A family get-together tradition was started with Blazing Saddles. After the whole family watched it together, from Grandmother all the way down to the grandchildren, everyone loved it. Became a tradition to rent silly movies every year thereafter. Some of the greatest hits besides Blazing Saddles were The Toxic Avenger and The Evil Dead. sounds weird, but my family has a great sense of humor. good memories.

"If we capped every corporation that gets the majority of its profit from the public, including Hollywood, pro sports, and all of your favorite corporations and their boards of directors, we could easily guarantee food, clothing, shelters, medication, education, transportation, and communication to everyone in this country." [Spelling corrections provided by Mozilla]

Could we? Really? Have you calculated the cost to support every single citizen of the United States? Not to mention the starving masses around the world? Don't forget that guaranteeing food, clothing, shelters, medication, education, transportation, and communication to everyone in this country would reduce your workforce considerably, because I know there is a huge demographic that would look at these things provided for them and think, "You know what? I'm good!"

It will never happen.
why?
because money = power.
there is no way you or anyone else would persuade the people in charge to cap their salaries or even take pay cuts. You have noble but misguided intentions. It's been shown that people don't really share your beliefs. There is no way you would ever get elected into a posistion of power without massive lies. Even if you became a senator or congressman I fail to see any of your proposed bills ever making it passed to voting stage.

Shorty,
I may come across as arrogant but its because I believe in what I say 100%. Go find your quote and post it. I know what I said. I have never said anyone was a horrible anything, only that we were all equal and deserving. I have only told someone that they are wrong when they respond directly to a post of mine and tried to argue an opposite view. It goes back and forth. No foul. If you put your fingers in your ears, I am not writing for you. I am writing for those who might be looking for a voice. Insult me all you want. I will never bother me. I even understand. I wish I could say I was leaving, but frankly I have too much fun watching you do what you do.

You've been describing a utopian socialist state where everyone gets only what they need and pays what they don't into the government. You decide how much housing people need, for example. You decide how much money corporations are allowed to make. You make sure the government has enough money to pay for free TVs, school, transportation, healthcare--that sounds a lot like telling people what they need and what they don't. You've already said that everyone "needs" a TV while they don't "need" a PC.

What is a mystery to me is how people complain that the posts that make it to the front page are unfunny, like VNV and Squiggly have. Not all pix are MEANT to be funny, some are meant to be cool, or express a political opinion or make an editorial comment or just be a meme, like the Taylor Swift and D-bag (which is a combination of many of those). And my examples are by no means trying to list all the types. My point is hot warrior girl has been a major meme since Ripley yelled "Get away from her you B*TCH!" (and maybe before that for all I know). In the case of this pic, not only is it a major meme, but it is major cool in my (never) humble opinion. I wish I had gotten in on the posts earlier, unfortunately I could only read the "fuzzy bunny slippers" and not respond to them, so I will content myself with pointing out this one minor but obvious point.

I hope you stay pissed, cause its coming. And frankly, they would be lucky if it came from me. Unfortunately, close minded people like yourself are going to force it to come from the lower class and frankly, that's not gonna be pretty.

Say what you want about its chances of success or its probability of occurrence, but it has happened before and it will happen again.

And I just want you to know that for all my arrogance and all my ideology, I will do anything I can to preserve life.

You have no idea about my world. You just make the same boring right wing cliches over and over. Get a new idea, or get on with your life and quit responding to my posts.

Well then, Semperfidd, whats your idea? How do you improve whats to come? What is to be done? I am really curious, because all you have said is "you are wrong" and tried to argue against me. Tell me what you are arguing for. I will let you know what I think are good points and bad. Tell us all how you make progress from where we stand right now?
