Gives me some interest to read the olympics history.
    Meh cbf

  2. paws4thot says:

    Don’t know much biology,…

  3. the_original_shortright says:

ok, i KNOW this photo/caption combo was on the front page before. what the hell is going on? are the PK admins sending up things that are “classics” without tagging them as such??

  4. paws4thot says:

Seriously, I don’t know how far ahead the Olympics were planned out in the 1930s, but this guy might have a point; it’s entirely possible that the 1936 Games were allocated to Berlin in 1930..32, before the Nazis won the 1933 election.

    • Starling says:

Ah, but Olympics have been boycotted before …

    • Kai says:

According to this website ( I don’t know where they got their info)
      http://www.absoluteastronomy.com/topics/1936_Summer_Olympics
The Olympic committee decide on Berlin in 1931.

I’m certain that the idiot up there didn’t know that though

    • wallFly says:

well, even if they weren’t decided until 1936, the war didn’t break out until 1939 and the attrocities being committed didn’t come out until later on, so it would be understandable that they’d hold them there thinking the nazi party was just another government. compare it to china, the beijing olympics – they let that go on and there was alot of fuss about humanitarian crimes.

anyway, point i’m trying to make is you make a good point paws :)

      • lowly grunt says:

nah, atrocities were going on before 1939 – they were merely of the bloodless kind. (been reading “The Winds of War” by Herman Wouk)

        • wallFly says:

i will at thanks lowly ;)

but that was the reference to the beijing games – even now when there’s apparent atrocities being committed by the host country the games are still allowed to be held by them. that part kind of baffles me still.

  5. ceallaig says:

paws, interesting argument, but we are talking what is in the history books that this person obviously did NOT absorb in school. What would make this truly ironic is if the person who created the sign turned out to be African-American (for those who have no clue what I’m talking about, look up Jesse Owens … )

    • parksj1 says:

I think Paws’ point was that maybe this person did know that Germany hosted the Olympics. In other words, maybe the point was: would we have allowed Nazi Germany to host the Olympics if we had known they were going to be such assholes?

However, I think it’s a stretch. It honestly seems like this person has no idea that Nazi Germany did, in fact, host the Olympics.

It was a better submission when the caption was just “History FAIL” (click on my name).

    • paws4thot says:

I got that; all I’m saying is that it’s entirely possible that this person knows more detail of history than we do, and that the 1936 Games were not allocated to Nazi Germany, where the Beijing games quite emphatically were allocated to China…

      • Zoreta says:

Which still makes the argument futile, since Germany turned Fascist, whereas China is communist. Fascism =/= communism.

        • paws4thot says:

Where do I say Fascism == Communism (or even State Capitalism)?

What I do say is that Germany was not a Fascist state when the 1936 Games were allocated, never mind a Genocidal one.

        • Scythelord says:

though china = a mix of fascism and communism.

          • Charlie Foxtrot says:

Doesn’t matter. The world was quite different. It’s like trying to pick the greatest Quarterback — can’t do it, the rules were different, the players were different, the knowledge was different. 1/2 a century is a significant amount of time, and this time span was greater. Having said that, do a cost/benefit analysis and see what the end result was — again you can’t do it because only time will tell. Sometimes you take your best shot at improving the world and hope it works.

          • Sunni says:

You speak as if you’ve lived their and suffered under their ‘fascist’ regimes.

  6. SirBaggsQHeadington says:

Don’t know much about grammar either by the looks of it…

  7. MrMunroe says:

…or about readin’ no history books!

  8. i_am_number1 says:

apparently he was absent that day

  9. Kendra says:

This saddens me on how little some people know of history….or you could always take miss South Carolina’s answer of why they don’t know lol

  10. Frank says:

    Wow, dumbass much?

Even if Berlin was given the Olympics, the Olympics could have been cancelled or boycotted. But if it was boycotted, then Jesse Owens wouldn’t have been there to thumb his nose at the notions of racial supremacy.

I don’t know exactly when the genocidal plans were made known, a multitude of people were in denial about it until the end of the war.

  11. Paulie Walnuts says:

I think the operative word here is “we”. That is to say “we of the present” with the knowledge of the truly sinister intentions and deeds of Nazi Germany as opposed to those of the IOC of the 1930’s. We know what the Maoist did and still allowed them to host the games. Now it’s up to you to decide whether our not China has reformed itself enough as of late. Apparently the present day IOC did.

    • the_original_shortright says:

you do realize that they weren’t protesting the maoist issues, right?

have you heard of tibet? have you heard of all the shit happening there that is sanctioned by the chinese government? have you heard of all the protests revolving around tibet?

no one gives a rats ass about what mao did way back in the day… they were pissed about what’s going on now and the fact that the IOC gave china the games anyway and basically gave them a free pass saying “we don’t care what you do it tibet”.

      • Paulie Walnuts says:

Tibet is essentially a Maoist issue. He’s the one that got the ball rolling. They still follow the dictates of the Little Red Book to the letter as much as the economy will allow. That includes the subjection of Tibet.

  12. Becky says:

You don’t need to know anything about history to know Olympic games are awarded many years prior to the actual games.

1936 Olympics were awarded to Germany in 1931. Nazi party didn’t become majority until 1932, and Hitler didn’t take power until 1933.

    Now who’s a dummy?

  13. pittypat says:

I’m not up on the economy.
    Don’t know much about industry.
Really can’t explain the price of gas.
Or what has happened to the middle class.
But I do know Bush one and two.
And the bra size of Sarah too.
What a terrible mess McCain would have been.

  14. Bix Nood says:

If anything the participating nations tried to prove Nazism wrong by winning golds. Even though the US came in second with 56 medals “Germany had 89″

But then there was the 1980 Summer Olympics where boycotted by many nations for the Soviet War in Afghanistan. But Jimmy Carter was a stooge for even thinking about boycotting. Why not send in the teams, and beat the Soviets to prove a point? Then again good luck at that.

  15. Suzianne says:

Couldn’t this be posted under Failblog?

  16. Lol says:

    Angry german Früher Kid.
    Jesse Owens wins
    A. Hitler:OH MEIN GOTTT WAS IST GESCHEHEN???!!!!!!

  17. Kelly says:

okay, aside from the whole history thing, i must pose another question…. does the us get to choose who hosts the olympics these days?

  18. Socks says:

Does anyone know the source of this photo?

  19. bob says:

This photo has been submitted before with a similar caption.

Anyway, I think the guy might be saying “would WE have let Nazi Germany host the olympics knowing what we know now.”

  20. Hilton Alligood says:

We did allow them to host the olympics in 1936.Berlin Germany. The caption is what made this, not killed it.

  21. Ohyes-Iforgot says:

And don’t forget that Time magazine named Adoph Hitler their Man of the Year in January 1939…not very long before the sh*t hit the fan.

    • blah says:

That does not condone his activities, it is just a statement that he most affected the events of that year, for better or worse.

  22. heinrich says:

    LOL … typical america

  23. BobTheLaughing says:

    History moron FTW!!!

  24. dennis4king says:

May I point out that some may ask the same question of British Columbia hosting the Winter Olympics in Vancouver this February after the treatment of its indigenous peoples (reservations, resudentail schools, etc).

  25. thx1449 says:

Remember Jesse Owens, America!!! Racially b*tch slapping hitler FTW!!!

    • dwo says:

Owens said that he got a much better reception from Hitler than Roosevelt. When he got back to America, he still had to get in the back of the bus.

  26. yoop says:

    Actually, yes. Yes we did.

  27. muepsilongamma says:

    i don’t get it

  28. Visitor says:

the nazis actually invented the olympic symbol and the torch.

  29. dahumanz says:

americans still believe we are all nazis.

and that we all look like some guys from the oktoberfest.

    btw: “Reich” = empire
why you always try to say “reich” it sounds so funny if you say that, ther IS a translation its just “empire” no special word.

  30. flameow says:

Uhh…I could’ve sworn that there was already a LOL with this exact picture, and it said something like “History Fail”

  31. chris says:

    people are to stupid…

  32. Clydesdale says:

    yes, yes they did

  33. Kohdok says:

Yea, you see there’s this funny story about that…involving a black guy, no less. I think his name was Jesse?
