  1. Igor the Vigorous says:

    Aren’t they always?

  2. Libby says:

For those who don’t know, his happened this past winter in Seattle. Due to a refusal to allow the DOT to use salt on the roads (because salt is bad for the ocean) a bus was unable to stop going down a hill and wound up hanging over I-5 during the afternoon commute. It was several hours before the whole thing got taken care of.

    Meanwhile, I love the caption!

  3. Peep says:

I saw that accident happen. We were at REI , and looked over when we herd the crash. That was the best Chrismas ever – being stuck at home in Seattle for an extra week because of the horrendous weather kept planes on the ground and us stucck out at the farm!!

  4. seattlecarol says:

Oh man, I remember driving North on I-5 out of Seattle, looking up and going “WTF”? Libby’s posting is spot on.

  5. Peep says:

ps. they don’t use “salt” on the roads, its actually a potash/sand combination. Yes, this is bad for the environment when it all sluices down Seattle’s streets directly into the ocean.

Additionally, everyone else in Seattle seemed to know that the hill streets were bad, WTF is wrong with these two drivers, endangering their young passengers like that???

“Duh, sorry boss, I saw dudley turn, so I just followed him!”

    • Wesa says:

The buses were trying to travel down Denny Way (which passes over I-5, you can see it in the distance in the photo) but it was closed due to snow/steep hill with ice. So they tried to turn around and go another route through the residential streets, went the wrong way, got stuck on a hill and couldn’t stop when they hit the ice. The drivers were not local, they didn’t know where to go or where to avoid going. Luckily no one died.

      • mothergoose says:

I’m sure the driver needed a change of pants!! ;-)

      • HellHathNoFury says:

Exactly. What was the driver supposed to do? ‘Well, I know we’re headed from Eastern Washington to Seattle, and we’re kindof there, so you can get out and walk now.’?
That accident was the only thing on the news all day. That’s a close call many people would call ‘god’s love’

    • Libby says:

Generally, yes, they use potash/sand, but, they said specifically in their media releases that they would not use salt or any other deicers because of the damage to the environment. I grant you that the usual chemical or potash/sand deicers, used in quantity would be bad for the environment, but you can use ROCK SALT or even FREAKING TABLE SALT to melt ice also, without the same negative impact.

    • Megan says:

my sister was there when this happened. It was an athletic trip for high school kids and the driver couldn’t slow his bus down on the tons and tons of snow and ice. The second bus was close behind but was able to slow down just in time.

yeah, my sister was like “that bus is going pretty fast.”

  6. Swrundeep says:

seriously! I heard people were outside on the hill sidewalks and screaming and waving at the buses to not go down the hill, but down they went! The hill was a sheet of ice that day.

I guess the drivers promised the kiddies a thrill if they behaved?

  7. pittypat says:

I knew I shoulda taken that left turn at Albuquerque.

    • viking gal says:

      Eeehhh, What’s up doc?
And happy new academic year, pittypat!

      • pittypat says:

Thanks, I guess, and to you too!
        *braces self for onslaught*

        • viking gal says:

I love my job, but the contrast between no students and a full college campus is…aaaaah! I think I’ll harvest some mint and have a preparatory mojito!
          *passes one to pittypat*
Skoal! That should take the edge off for both of us!

          • Jane St.Clair says:

I’ve been plugging away at my master’s for so long that I’ve forgotten what first day of classes, fall semester, in the morning, looked like. I was like, oh my class is on Wednesday night, I should head on over to the university to pay my parking and get books. Shower? Why bother, I just have to get a blow dryer and shower before my job interview this afternoon, I’ll just throw on these exercise pants and put my hair in a ponytail. I get there and it’s packed. I was like, who are all these children and why are they in my parking lot?!

  8. Bob says:

no he was staring at boobs on a ad

  9. i_@m_#1 says:

Well, he could have fallen asleep….

  10. Levine says:

Such coinsidence. They were talking about texting and driving in the news today. Lol. -delete stupid comment after enter has been pressed- :D

  11. GreenFuzzyLeaf says:

Haha, I like this comment but… I thought the first caption when this had just happened was a bit funnier.

As for the salting, well I can understand not salting near a fresh water system, but seriously the puget sound IS salt. I thought nickels was an idiot about this whole thing. Not only did he NOT want to use any form of salt deicer, I think they actually sprayed a chemical one that was supposed to be not as damaging. :|

He also didn’t have the streets properly plowed in fear of damaging the street sensors. My take is if a plow damages them, then they’re improperly placed to begin with. Instead he had them used some rubber thing to “break it up a bit to make it rough for traction” but all it did was pack it down and turn it into ice. Good for sledders, not so much for drivers. Hence Seattle was pretty well shut down for awhile.

  12. is dennis hooper in there anywhere

  13. mr.artday says:

For what it’s worth, in the recent primary election, Commisar Nickels came in third and will not be on the Nov. ballot. So we won’t have him to kick around anymore.

    • rosignol says:

Oh? Nickels was so bad that we’re going to be telling stories about him for a good long time. He’s probably the worst Mayor Seattle has had in my lifetime.

  14. RIP Shady says:

There were two buses that slid down that hill. The second one pushed the first one farther past the guardrail. Here’s a link to the news story.

  15. KT says:

LOL Oh Seattle. If Denny Way is “too icy” then damnit, those other roads are going to be worse.
    Silly people. :]

  16. MTD says:

Winter of 08″ in Seattle. An out of towner bus was taking back street to go to freeway offramp. Stop just short of the fence, but the 2nd with him smack him. Causing this. Hole was in the fence for 3 weeks before it got fixed.
And the best part was the buses full of band kids was from Central WA where there is MUCH stronger climate than what Seattle gets.

    • Libby says:

Yet much fewer hills. And the snow is usually drier. I know whereof I speak. I grew up there.

      • Billybob says:

Besides they actually have plows in those places. They have plows in Seattle as well. They just don’t use them. They don’t bother with them in Tacoma as well where I live.
