  1. Lefty says:

They should also put a filter on how many times the same picture can be on the front page in a certain amount of time. . .

    • Sarah of Philadelphia says:

Ah, but perhaps this sinister and ubiquitous “THEY” is just out to get YOU. Dang commies.

    • Rax says:

I’d rather see the filter removed that prevents good comments about republicans and bad about democrats.

      • Lefty says:

There really is no such filter. I think the main thing that filters out those comments is the general feeling that they aren’t going to welcomed here. I don’t think that’s true. You’ll see that for the most part we all get along here regardless of political affiliation and (will try, at least, to) contribute intelligently.(Psst… VNV, Froo, Deep. . . Play nice while Rax is looking…)

So in short, there’s not filter like that here. Comment away, as long as you try not to be too douchebagy-gy about it.

        • Rax says:

Sadly, there is obviously such a filter although I believe that it is a person who has an obvious political viewpoint.

This particular picture at this time has 207 captions. Since not all are shown, clearly there must be a way to choose which ones are used.

I often review the others so that I can avoid the political bias. There are some really funny ones for and against both sides and it is unfortunate that those that place Obama in a poor light are not shown.

          • froofrou says:

It’s a democratic proceedure. Each LOL is voted on, and the one with the most votes gets on the front page. The majority of voters here tend toward a liberal slant, thus the majority of LOLs posted will be Obama-love and Bush-hate. Or something similar. There isn’t a filter with regards to the moderators.

            • Rax says:

Seeing some of those that make it, I strongly question your statement, but I’ll go with it for lack of a better argument.

              • froofrou says:

Why are you strongly questioning my statement? The rules are set by the mods, they go off the greatest number of votes, end of story. Just because people vote for dumb LOLs for whatever reason doesn’t mean that I don’t know what I’m talking about. If you have any questions about the procedure (sorry about the mispelling before), email the mods and ask.

                • Wait, is he talking about the LOLs?
Hah. Perhaps one should not use “comment” as a term for “captions”.
                  WordPress and this section= Comments.
                  LOLS= CAPTIONS.
                  Basic PK vocab, people!

            • Rax says:

Ok, did some research and got an argument.

The one under which this comment section resides currently has no rating and is the favorite of none.

On the other hand, there is one on the second page about geekmeisters whose favorites (1940) is far better than any other in first few pages (did not desire to go through all 207)

I think this invalidates your explaination.

              • froofrou says:

The ratings (as has been previously pointed out) are jacked up for some reason, and aren’t showing on all of the LOLs. Favoriting a LOL doesn’t mean you’ve voted for it, as you’d know if you would bother to actually go VOTE for something. Don’t speak about things you obviously have no clue about, and really don’t care about. If you cared, you would have voted, would know the process, and would be keeping your mouth shut right now instead of outing yourself.

                • Rax says:

So the ones that go up are based on the rating yet
“The rating system is jacked up.” Being a favorite of a vastly large number of people means nothing towards the ratings that determine which are displayed front page.

If your information about the rating system is right, then it proves my point. If you’re wrong it proves my point. Either way, I’m certain you know what you are talking about.

                  • froofrou says:

The rating system is not how you vote. Try going to the actual voting page to see how you vote. Your tortured logic means nothing as it’s obvious you are only here to pick fights and not actually learn anything.

                  • Lefty says:

The system here uses “voting” and “rating”. They often get confused. I was confused when I first started too. The ones that come up are based on voting. Voting is done on the Vote page, and adds 1 to that LOL’s vote score if you rate it as Win. It loses one if you vote it as Fail, and gains nothing if you choose not to vote on it. The LOLs with high totals in voting go onto the roster to be put on the front page.

“Rating” is the process of giving a LOL a 1-5 rating. You can vote on any LOL, whether it’s on the way to the front page or not. Some LOLs might get low points in voting, but get 5 ratings from everyone that sees it. Rating has little effect on what appears on the front page, but more involves voting, I believe.

                    • Rax says:

Well, I must admit you did a much more admirable job than Froofrou explaining the process.

I was quite interested in the section about the roster. If 5 of the same picture score high, do they all make it on the main page?

                      • Lefty says:

They can. There currently isn’t any restriction on how often a certain picture or topic can make it onto the same page. What tends to happen is that once a certain picture makes it onto the front page, the voters will have a “been there, seen that” type of response and vote pictures with the same joke or picture down.

However, if you scroll back, you’ll see that everyone pretty much groaned when there were three “Sarah Palin resigned! OMG” style LOLs that made it to the front page. The pictures that are up to be put on the front page are under the Upcoming tab at the top of the page.

                        • Rax says:

Well, at best I see an automated system that slims down the 206 choices to a select few, but I still see the potential for a human hand guiding the final selection process.

This still leads me to believe that bias is making its way into the system, but your arguments and delivery make enough sense that I will try to keep and open mind.

                        • bad fairie says:

don’t forget rax that this is a site owned and operated by a person, not a business or a gov’t entity – if said owner lets his/her bias show, it’s their perogative

                • Rax says:

I did go back and review the voting system for flaws and you are absolutely right, it is “jacked up.”

Must be run by the Iranian government.

Either way, I see enough evidence to accept the possiblity of bias and filtering.

What I don’t see any evidence of is that supporting your viewpoint.

And even if, on the chance that your idea has merit, that this is democratic voting of those that go outside the main page, expanding it from 1 to even a hundred dedicated few hardly qualifies as democratic voting rather than a filter.

But I do thank you for offering up your opinion.

      • I’d rather see the filter re-entered that allows random trolls like you to come through and complain about the bias you happen to see in any given place. Go back to the “SPECIAL” thread; I’m sure you’ll see plenty there to please you.

        • Rax says:

Just because someone is paranoid does not mean they are not right. But I do appreciate how you needed to resort to insults and degrading comments to attempt to make a point.

I do respect and value the opinions of a person that has a well thought out and supported political view regardless of their affiliation. The merit of your argument on the other hand scares and saddens me.

          • Nowhere did I call you paranoid. The only insult I resorted to was troll, and that is because you need to read up on your PK history if you think no one here criticizes democrats or republicans. So f*ck off, I said nothing of my political affiliation, just that your arguments don’t hold water in that we have plenty of pro-republican commenters here. If you think there’s a filter, you’re probably only noticing the anti-republican comments, which I agree are extremely stupid.
“I’d rather see the filter removed that prevents good comments about republicans and bad about democrats.”
If you think that’s the truth, go read the rest of the comments pages and get back to me when you’ve had a logic injection.

            • Teacher says:

As we wait for your 14 year old zits to clear up, join us in hoping that you are soon B*tch slapped by a returning Iraqi veteran- preferably a female one. You are the whiniest, insulting little troll on this site.

              • As we wait for your righteous vindication to clear up and for you to stop seeing red, hopefully you will see I’ve said nothing about Iraqi veterans or females here. I do troll bash, but at least I contribute to conversations and debates here. How long have you been reading here, exactly? Because I’m pretty sure I’ve met worse trolls than me before. Look around for the abortion discussion I had with Dhoti if you want to see the contribution to conversation I can make, rather than trolling about how trollish someone else is.

              • eddiepscetti says:

                Stick.Ass.Pull it out

              • Jane St.Clair says:

Please tell me you are not a real teacher. I weep for your students.

              • Amekaze says:

Holy bejezums! Calm down, that was an intelligent conversation in which Igor was accused of saying things he did not say. He corrected her (with force admittedly) but nothing beyond his rights. What the hell do female Iraqi veterans have to do with this?

                • Yeah, I’ve been going overboard on the trollbashing lately… They’re so much fun to bash, though. It’s like playing a zombie game. Teacher was completely off-topic and unrelated though. :P

                • lowly grunt says:

Wow, it must be late; I just noticed Tyler is now Igor…..
                  when did that happen?

                  • On the As a matter of fact thread. Yet another Tyler.
I decided to drop it and come up with something a little more… Well, what would you call it, mathter? /limp due to hunchback

  2. Sarah of Philadelphia says:

You know, being the president has gotta be one of the lousiest jobs on the planet. You might make some of the people happy some of the time, but they ain’t no way you can make all the people happy about anythin’. There’s always gonna be someone kvetching. Always.

    • Lefty says:

True. But it’s like that for any job where you have make choices for an entire group which has varying opinions on anything.

    • Danbala says:

Yeah. Being POTUS is definitely a “damned if you do, damned if you don’t”-job, I think.

    • Rax says:

Try the job of being the victims of their (all of them) work.

      • bad fairie says:

so just out of curiosity, just who are you a ‘victim’ of? because (and maybe this is just me) i’m reading that you feel that you’re a victim

    • Deep Thought says:

Everyone aspires to be president so someday schoolchildren all over America can laugh about their fat asses getting stuck in a bathtub.

      Yeah, president. Whatta job.

    • Sarolite says:

The worst part is that between his senate job, her lawyer job, and the book royalties, they probably took a huge pay cut to take this job.

  3. VictoryNotVengeance says:

Its tougher than you expected, sure, but you have done a fine job so far, and I have no doubt you will continue to do a fine job. Let history be the judge. You just have to stay the course, and I am sure it will all work out. Only 7 more years right? I believe in you.

    • Inked_Hippie says:

Three and a half years. A second term is not guaranteed.

      • VictoryNotVengeance says:

I know. But one can hope, can’t one?

        • hope-a-dope says:

um, yeeaaaah… “hope” is workin’ out so well.

The administration has already admitted that their “stimulus” didn’t stimulate anything.

          • VictoryNotVengeance says:

Was that the Bush Stimulus? or the Obama stimulus?

            • froofrou says:

              Both.

              • VictoryNotVengeance says:

So true. I think its because throwing money at the problem of a problem of a problem, doesn’t quite fix the problem.

                • froofrou says:

And yet, when Obama does it, it’s just not working *yet*…

                  • VictoryNotVengeance says:

I never said it would work. But I think Obama is a lot closer to at least realizing what the problem is. Its just not politically savy to say it. And he is, afterall, a politician.

                    • froofrou says:

SO if it’s not working now, and it didn’t work before, why are we discussing yet another one? I believe this falls under a definition of insanity, but I could be wrong.
                      -
And I’m sure my view on the problem and how to fix it differs wildly from your view on how to fix it.

                      • Deep Thought says:

Oh froo, you’re too kind to the little pleb. Have mercy…. just wield your scepter of power to fuse the foil and be done… ;)

                        • froofrou says:

I shall bestow on him food today, for I might not show the same kindness tomorrow. *waves scepter*

                        • VictoryNotVengeance says:

I love how you paint yourself as the elite. Why? Because I paint myself as somewhat of a revolutionary. It gives me even greater pleasure typing against your “deep thoughts”.

                        • Deep Thought says:

                          Wow. You really are stupid.

Froo, it’s not nice to make fun of the truly mentally challenged.

                          We should stop.

                      • VictoryNotVengeance says:

And thats the fun of being human isn’t it? That we can have such drastically different ways to fix the problem? The trick is being able to see someone as your equal, and I mean -really- your equal, regardless of wealth, sex, race, education, political affiliation, sexual preference, beuaty, and so on and so forth. Once you can wrap your mind around people being absolutely equal around the world, you can then, finally start to solve the problem, which is, in a word, inequality.

                        • Deep Thought says:

But you’re not. You’ve already said we’re better than you.

                          Duh.

                        • froofrou says:

Inequality is not the problem, nor will the pseudo-problem be solved by Robin Hood-like tactics of taxing those who have and give to those who don’t have. The problem is that people have become dependant on other people doing for them in some way shape or form, which causes resentment toward those who have by those who have not (for whatever reason), which in turn causes resentment and hoarding by those who have worked and have against those who take and don’t give back.
                          -
It’s not inequality, as you so inelloquently put it, it’s laziness by the system.

                        • VictoryNotVengeance says:

Laziness is the excuse of the uninformed. There are entire subjects of study that prove that laziness is not the problem. There are no studies that prove it is, only personal opinion. And “Deep Thought” there is no way you are the top 2%, and I never said they were better, just exponentially more well off.

                        • froofrou says:

I apologize for that being a bit rambling, I’m typing out stream of conciousness in between seeing people at work :-)

                        • Dhoti says:

Then let’s see those studies, VNV. Surely you can share some, yes?

                        • Deep Thought says:

                          LMAO!

If you’re so well read, you’d get the reference, moron.

                          Better.

                        • froofrou says:

You said that the top 2% own houses and whatnot. That pretty much puts all of us normal people in that 2%. Try again. Your brain smokes when you think too hard.
                          -
And no, laziness is not the excuse of the uninformed. Laziness is the symptom seen by everyone in my line of work, to the point that your soul keeps getting sucked out piece by piece, and your paycheck keeps getting sucked dry by a government that thinks it knows better than you what to do with your money.

                      • Rax says:

more like if at first you don’s succeed…..

                      • Eric-in-STL says:

Here’s how Washington sees the problem, I think. The recession is a deep well, and they think throwing more and more money into the well will fill the hole. What nobody on either side seems to get is that it’s a bottomless pit instead.

                        • Deep Thought says:

That’s why the Chinese are rich now!!

                        • Faceh says:

The pit isn’t “bottomless,” its just deeper than any one government could possibly fill. With that said, recovery is basically inevitable. Our economy will emerge leaner and stronger, and hopefully businesses and consumers will be smarter as well.

I doubt that anybody in Washing actually believes that the Stimulus will solve the problem by itself. If they do, they’re fooling themselves. What it CAN do is lessen the blow somewhat, and possibly hasten the recovery. At the very least, its encouraging development into new areas and maintaining our infrastructure.

Thats the main strength the U.S. has. All our infrastructure already exists. We have millions of houses, but nobody to live in them. Roads, factories, and office buildings all standing idle right now. When the economy turns around we’ll move right back into them. Many other countries do not have this luxury.

                        • froofrou says:

The problem with moving back into those idle businesses if and ever the economy bounces back is that prohibitive tax rates and cap and trade will cause business owners to find cheaper ways to do business. I.e. sending labor overseas, moving overseas to escape tax rates, or simply closing down. You can’t keep taxing the golden goose. Eventually, she will tax out and die.

              • dwinship says:

Wrong. The Stimulus is all Obama’s.
                The TARP is Bush’s.

                • froofrou says:

Bush had a stimulus at the beginning of 2008. Remember the $600 per person and $1200 per couple? Granted, it’s not as far-reaching or have as many repercussions (outside of more debt) as the ginormous stimulus bill that gives Obama wet dreams at night and is working about as well as an unbalanced tire, but it was still a stimulus.

                  • Amekaze says:

If I’m not mistaken the first figure of $700 billion in stimulus was at the end of Bush’s term as well. Of course that pitiful amount was pocket change for Che Obama. What trillion amount are we up to now? Oh wait, we also have to add on the 2nd stimulus that isn’t needed ‘yet’ but will be by, oh next week or so when the unemployment rate which wasn’t suppose to go higher then 8 or whatever jumps to 13% or something.

            • charro says:

I know I was stimulated. *giggle*

    • Lefty says:

In before the Republicans get here to tell you that they disagree with your opinion on Obama’s work!

      *puts on helmet*
Any other bystanders, get behind the shatter-proof barrier!

      • VictoryNotVengeance says:

Eh. All they can say is they disagree with me. Doesn’t make them right. Doesn’t make me wrong. Thats half the fun of having people disagree with you. Especially if you know you are right. ;)

        • Lefty says:

The problem is most of the lurkers who chime in once every blue moon don’t say “I disagree with you.” They things that come out sounding like “ZOMG YOU’RE WRONG! TRY THINKING, LIBTARD!”, and no one really learns or discusses anything.

I will say that some of the more frequent PKers who lean to the right do usually input something intelligent to the conversation. *hearts to you guys/gals* For that, we do appreciate you. Perhaps my first statement would have been better stated as “Here comes the anti-Obama Troll Brigade”? But then someone might then think that meant all right-wingers.

I guess maybe next time I should phrase my comments more tactfully. =/

          • Lol…
Well, I’m not thrilled with what he’s doing (so far) but I’m willing to agree with “let history be the judge”.

            • Rax says:

I agree with assessment of his performance, but I’m not willing to sit and wait. I much perfer the action to prevent further problems

History has the benefit of being able to enumerate the victims but not actually dealing with the problems.

      • whatever says:

Your life has no meaning without “opposition”? weird.

    • Blarg says:

“You just have to stay the course.”

I wonder if you were saying that about Bush keeping troops in Iraq…

      My guess is no.

      • VictoryNotVengeance says:

Thats true. I was the one saying “why are you going into Iraq? They weren’t responsible for 9/11. Oh crap… well there goes the Bush Administration… “

        • Blarg says:

“Why are you reforming healthcare? Healthcare wasn’t responsible for the recession. Oh crap…well, there goes the record Bush set for deficit spending…”

          Yeah…

          • klesansung says:

            WIN!

But healthcare was a huge part of the recession. Perhaps you are misinformed. The top 2% controlling 98% of the wealth and keeping things like homes, education, healthcare out of the hands of the lower 98% of the nation, all the while telling them to “live within thier means” and then outsourcing thier jobs. Oh I think healthcare is definately part of the problem. Perhaps you are misinformed?

              • Is there a typo in that? Your statistics imply that 98% of us don’t have homes, education, or healthcare.

                • the_original_shortright says:

i saw that and was thrilled! apparently i’m in the top 2%. UPGRADE!

                  • VictoryNotVengeance says:

Oh no. I am just saying the lower 98% are little more than wage slaves, who must work harder and get less. You have a home today. If the top 2% chooses, you have no home tomorrow.

                    • Dhoti says:

Uh oh…”wage slaves” used unironically is usually shorthand for “crackpot”…

But please, prove me wrong — tell me how property rights don’t apply in the Great 98?

                      • I think the reasoning for your last question goes like this, Dhoti- They want you out of your house? The people who own the huge companies outsource your job and after your income stops and it’s hard to get another job, you’re evicted?
Given, I’m not a mind reader, but I THINK that’s where his logic was going.

                        • Dhoti says:

That’s my assumption too. The “wage slavers” usually ignore savings, personal investment, that whole ugly mess…

Still, it’s rather a leap from “lots of people are screwed if they lose their job”, or even from “lots of people with no savings are screwed if they lose their job” to “NO HOUSE FOR YOU!!!!1!”

Property rights only apply if the state upholds it. If the state wants to reclaim your property they will do it with force, and you will have nothing.

The chances are good that you are not important enough to piss off a 2% player. You just keep working for less than you deserve, and they will keep arranging what you actually have access to. But, if they wanted to, yes, your house will be destroyed.

                        • Eric, did you get an education and healthcare? You must be at least top 3 or 4%.

                        • froofrou says:

Eric, I rent, but I own two vehicles, a computer, and various other high dollar electronic gizmos that make my life complete. Oh, and I have healthcare, a job that pays enough to raise two kids and a husband, and am basically happy. Aside from my soul getting sucked out in degrees by my job. So I think that puts me in the 2% along with you :-)

                        • ….see, Eric, the other 98% are the vast, vast majority of people in the United States who live in shacks they’ve built out of garbage, starving, huddling in the cold, completely illiterate and covered in scabies and lice.

So, let me get this straight — all this whining and moaning and posturing on your part was to post a link that shows that wealth in America is unevenly distributed? And somehow, you think this proves your entire argument? LOL!

                        • Ok, I tried that…and I have to tell you guys this one:

If you google that phrase, then go to the 6th hit ({http://www.elancer.com.hk/references/618/wealth-distribution-in-america.html}, one of the links it pops up is titled: “Buy Wealth in America at Walmart.com”!

I wondered where the hell I was supposed to get some wealth.

                        • Lefty says:

Yeah. . . I’d have to agree with everyone else, on the link excuse being BS part. You can just put it in the “Website” box like everyone else does. Maybe he was too busy reading political books to try and work the internets correctly?

I won’t be holding out for that round that Dhoti promised.

Also, most of the people here are informed of the wealth distribution in America. If I were to pick a PKer who wouldn’t know that, it definitely wouldn’t be Dhoti or froofrou. Like Dhoti said, that doesn’t make your arguement.

                        • Eric-in-STL says:

Hear hear! Who does need social change? Not me says I, just give me my gun and a six pack and leave me alone!!!

See, that is the thing you silly ‘enlightened’ people don’t understand from us lesser mortals (Even though we are apparently the top 2%), if you left us alone, we’d let you go on destroying yourselves in a foolish attempt at making the world and everyone perfect, the way you see perfect anyway.
Just because you can’t understand simple pleasures does not make us the idiots here.

              • Semperfidd says:

Aren’t the politicians all in the 2%? You make it sound like the only people within the top 2% are greedy corporate CEO’s. Everyone of the democratic and republican politicians are in there as well. Last I heard they had a pretty dandy healthcare and retirement plan. These same people are in charge of the VA healthcare/facilities etc and you want to put your trust in them? I think I would go with the greedy CEO lol

                • froofrou says:

THANK YOU!! Someone finally mentioned VA healthcare. People, pay attention here, look at the VA if you want to see government healthcare in action. I literally just had a guy in my office who missed two days of work because he was sick. He is a vet, could have gotten the free healthcare afforded him by the VA, but chose not to go because of the wait, and the fact that they wouldn’t have helped him anyway. I thought that was extremely telling, and scares me about where healthcare is going. They dont’ have the money, the doctors, or the time to really take care of people because they are spread so thin. Does anyone honestly think that government healthcare on a national scale would be any different?

                  • Eric-in-STL says:

Considering how little our government cares about veterans (which is sick for sure), I’m not entirely sure this representative of how it will be on a national scale. Our nation does a really shitty job of taking care of its heroes.

                    • semperfidd says:

“I’m not entirely sure this representative of how it will be on a national scale”…..social security, medicare, IRS…how many “national” examples do you need? If the government can’t take care of 3 million vetrans what makes you think they can take care of 300 million citizens (politicians excluded of course as they have their own “special” retirement and health plans)

                      • froofrou says:

I think the IRS is a pretty streamlined example of how government run anything works. They are extremely efficient at taking your money, but if you get a refund or God forbid THEY screwed up, the wheels turn slowly, if at all.

                  • curiouser says:

I don’t really disagree with you about the lack of money/doctors, but would like to point out the anecdotal-ness of your account. My father gets his healthcare from the VA, and he has always been satisfied with it.

There’s absolutely no guarantee that the man you saw would have had a better experience in the private sector. I have fairly widely-accepted insurance, and still had to call 3 different doctors offices to be seen for a case of bronchitis within 3-4 days. The problem of lack of doctors still exists.

Seems like if the government wants to give any money to healthcare, they could work on using it to train healthcare workers and streamline inefficient systems. Not just create more programs that are not affordable/sustainable.

Oh, also…I like these reply boxes. Go PK.

Hey, who lost all these socks back here?

        • hope-a-dope says:

… which has nothing to do with your nonsense “stay the course” rhetoric. Just sayin’.

          • Your socks are showing.

          • VictoryNotVengeance says:

by “stay the course” i meant “don’t screw it up” like by having an affiar with someone from another country and “don’t just quit” like someone who can’t handle the pressure of governing.

            • Deep Thought says:

Because it’s fine to have an affair with someone in the oval office and oh-so-much-more-noble to stay in office when you’ve led the country into a misery index of 20.5 (you know, important things like Interest rate, 21%. Inflation, 13.5%. Unemployment, 7%) and get run out of office on a rail.

              Yer stoopid.

  4. Blarg says:

Why would he be saying that? Him and his pet Congress have no opposition to putting whatever they want to through right now. They have no filibuster against them, they’re putting in justices they want, and they’re using deadlines to make 300 page amendments that no one can read, allowing them to REALLY put whatever they want into legislation without people even knowing what they’re voting on. What more could you ask for in a Presidency?

    • hoep-a-dope says:

Prolly cuz he’s realizing how hard it is to actually create workable policies, as opposed to spouting fuzzy, contradictory rhetoric? Sure, he can (and is!) implementing all sorts of stuff… but will it work? Not so far.

    • Lefty says:

Well, that would be true if all Democrats thought the exact same thing about everything. However, there are even Democrats holding up some legislation, like this proposed healthcare reform.

The news has made a big deal about how many Democrats are in Congress, but it doesn’t stress how different some of these people’s opinions are from Obama’s.

      • Blarg says:

Doesn’t change the fact that there are still people voting on legislation that they haven’t been able to read. Regardless of how that legislation was put into play or who put it there, it’s THEIR fault for voting before knowing.

        • Lefty says:

Yes, but my comment was more directed at the sentiment (at least the sentiment that I though you were expressing) that there’s so many Democrats that Congress should be whipping out bills like it’s got bill-diarrhea. (. . .gross image. . .)

But politicians have been playing the “Just read the first few pages, and get the overview. . . and don’t worry about the negative stuff at the end” game, as well as the “We don’t like this, but we’ll look bad if we vote it down, so we’ll just bury it” game for quite some time. Probably even more so now, that a lot of people have the impression that is penned by a Democrat or sounds fairly left-leaning should just be shot through the process.

          • Blarg says:

I wasn’t saying that it should have bill-diarrhea; rather, I was saying that he has no opposition to anything he would want to put through. They’re all on the same boat, and have an overwhelming amount of power, so there’s nothing that should be making him facepalm. Well, nothing aside from him saying that the stimulus had to go through ASAP, no time to read it, just vote NOW or so we can keep unemployment from reaching 9%. I guess that whole failing thing could make him facepalm a bit…

            • Lefty says:

And what I was saying is that he does have opposition, with some being on his own “side”. That became somewhat clear when he first tried to put the bailout bill through. Everyone was saying “Yay! Democrats have majority in the House! Bailout will succeed!” and then looking stunned when it was voted down. (Granted a fairly sizable percentage of Democrats supported it)

In times like these, party label is no clear indicator of whether a bill is going to pass or not. Like Realdef says below, the Democratic Party is somewhat of a bigger tent part. I think it could easily by split up into two or three or even more different sets of beliefs. Luckily (or unluckily? You choose) there are some people on both sides who refuse to vote a certain way because the people who have the same little party tag voted for it.

      • Realdef says:

Hell, you put five democrats in a room, good luck getting all of them to have the same position on an issue. I’ve tried. I guess that’s the bad part about being a big tent party. You don’t get the unity of action that the Republicans seem to enjoy.

But, I guess that’s also a good thing. 300 people thinking independently is better than 300 marching in lockstep.

    • Lefty says:

Yeah, it’s been like that on all the blogs in the ICHC family. All of them are showing as unrated.

      • I Like Peanut Butter says:

B/C by only taxing the “rich” you create another set of “haves” and “have nots”. Plus then you encourage the “rich” to higher accountants to help hide the money. I also quoted the “rich” b/c peoples definition of rich changes. I personally don’t think we should punish people for succeeding. There is a point in my life where I will get a raise, and end up making less money b/c of jumping a tax bracket. Does that sound right to you? Should I work harder to earn less money?

        • markmier says:

It appears that you fail to understand the concept of marginal tax rates. You are not working harder to earn less money in an absolute sense. You pay a higher tax *rate* on any amount of money that is above the tax bracket threshold.

Your interpretation is a common mistake that many people make, and is quite often cited by anti-tax advocates as truth. But anyone with a rudimentary knowledge of tax law knows that that is totally false.

Note: I am NOT a tax lawyer, I’m just some dude who does his own taxes. It’s not that hard to understand.

LOL, Im betting this guy is ready to shove something sharp in the eye of the next individual who comes across his path and says anything remotely resembling, “Yes we can!”

This time, 2011, is going to be one Hell of a time to watch politics unfold. Likely to be one of the most volatile 4 years in a long time… and my best guess (which isnt saying a lot at my age) is that in the end it is going to me even greater separation and political bickering. Bipartisan you say? /chuckle
