Okay… Did this really need to be in poster format?

    • cakeislie says:

lol i know, i think a caption would’ve worked. Posters usually have a subject as the big text, but this is funny nonetheless

      • pittypat says:

        POSTERS SHOULD be used sparingly

        • Emperor, Leader of the Resistance. says:

          Like this I suppose?

          Posters!
          They should be used sparingly

          • pittypat says:

Don’t spare the poster, spoil the post?

            • Emperor, Leader of the Resistance. says:

              Something like that.

              • pittypat says:

But rare pot roast spoils the dinner.

                • meglet says:

what we need is the chicago style guide to lols

                      awesome pittypat, total class :)
                      where’s your name though?

You do that WAY too well! Another survivor of grad school?

                        • Jane St.Clair says:

I don’t think I’ve ever been able to do it from memory, I’d need a style guide right next to me.

                        • viking gal says:

That’s the thing which makes me think pittypat has done time in the post-BA education lockup!

                        • pittypat says:

Done time? More like life without parole …

                        • Jane St.Clair says:

Hey, I’m getting my Master’s degree! It’s just that a Master’s in Education is not quite the same thing. ;)

                        • viking gal says:

I managed to get myself released to the halfway house, eventually… But some people enjoy the maximum security penitentiary!

                        • I’m pretty sure I’m going to start my MFA in December, but I’m gonna do it in creative writing so I don’t have to cite anything :) MUAHAHAHAHAHAHA goodbye MLA!

                        • viking gal says:

@ Jane St. Clair. So you aren’t in the supermax. You are still serving pretty serious time. You’ll get the lingo like an immigrant!

                        • viking gal says:

MLA’s pretty insane. But the APA keeps changing every darned year!

                        • I have to write a paper in APA this week. Blurgh. MLA changes all the time too, it’s impossible, and impossibly uninteresting.

                        • viking gal says:

Which is why I tell students I don’t care which format they use–as long as they are consistent AND legal.
What ever happened to teaching about citation in high school?

                        • Jane St.Clair says:

Well, aside from the class I’m taking this summer the only things I have to do is the Research class that leads up to the final Exit Project. I have a feeling that all the citing I’ve been avoiding is going to catch up to me.

                        • viking gal says:

Research class? Oh, yes, you’re in for it! But you will have lots of PK empathy along the way!

                        • Jane St.Clair says:

Yes, I’ve heard it’s pretty brutal. The whole point is to spend a semester learning how to research properly while gathering the necessary information for your exit project. It’s more difficult for me because I don’t have my own classroom yet. I don’t know how that’ll be handled.

                        • viking gal says:

In my experience/observations, they will most likely either suggest you go back to the classroom that you student-taught in, or they supply a willing master teacher who is willing to work with you.

                        • pittypat says:

DWN how in God’s name did you miss *this* cue ;)

                        • meglet says:

@Vikinggal I’m in engineering and you’d be amazed at what some people think passes for citations, and nobody seems to pull them up on it either, in spite of it being hammered into us from first year onwards…
the other day i was given a group member’s part to collate into our main report and she hadn’t done ANY in text referencing. None at all. I asked her to send it through to me and she sent me the bibliography again, she had no idea what i was talking about. this is in a final year subject too, and all we have to do is harvard refs!
APA is freaking ridiculous and surely just a money-making exercise, i used to do psychology… how many different ways can you italicise a citation?

                        • Xenobiologista says:

If you’re at a big university it’s quite likely your institution has a subscription to a citation manager like RefWorks or EndNote. If you have to do a lot of writing your life will be SO much easier if you learn to use them.

                        • meglet says:

I would marry endnote if i could, but nobody else i know uses it even though i tell them how awesome it is… *sigh*

                        • Tyler says:

Meh, I use Noodlebib- the only one my school’s got.

                        • HairySexyTroll says:

                          Endnote=teh shizzle.

                        • viking gal says:

@meglet. I swear there are so many students who believe–or hope–that citation is only some weird exercise that comes up in the non-creative-writing part of English class. It seems to be a shock to them that one might have to use it in another class, let alone ‘real life’. Sigh. Every year I have to call someone to my office, and beat the fear of…dissection…into them.

    • PortlandMark says:

I just don’t understand the poster nazi attitude I keep reading here. What’s the diff?

      • dick says:

Why is it when people are annoyed by common mistakes they’re referred to as fill-in-the-blank nazis?

      • Jane St.Clair says:

It’s hard to explain, but you really have to think what’s going to best fit your caption. With poster the emphasis is on the main word with the humor coming from how you define it below. I think a simple caption saying, “David needs to rethink his strategy” would have gotten the point across in a clearer way. Right now I’m distracted because of the formatting. I’m not as picky as some on the poster format, but I think the breaking news format is almost never funny (except the one Diss did the other day).

  2. Devious Minx says:

someone give that kid a sandwich.

  3. pittypat says:

    Invisible swimming pool ledge.

  4. heffi says:

    *drops invisible sandwich to David*

  5. wallFly says:

little boy david huffs and puffs and blows the cops down!

  6. J says:

Oh no! He’s hulkin’ the e’f out! He goes green, we run like hell…got it?

  7. Emperor, Leader of the Resistance. says:

    He is offering us riblets?

  8. Grace says:

Make yourself look big. That’s what they say to do for mountain lions, why not the 5-0?

  9. wargleble says:

How the rest of the world sees Obama……….

  10. MetallicaFan says:

This kid has more ribs than a restaurant in Texas.

  11. Heintraag says:

In this case the poster format was chosen to emphasise the kid looking like David. But it could have been a simple caption just as wel i agree on that. What amazes me is that people actually have a discussion on this LOL

  12. This picture was taken in a favela in Rio de Janeiro during a police operation. The boy is a resident of the slum and, as you can see, many people don’t like the police in the city. o.o The picture won the ‘Prêmio Esso de Fotografia’, the most important journalism prize in Brazil in the year 2005. The photographer is Evandro Monteiro.

  13. Marekatt says:

…and he huffed, and he puffed!
