  1. Onion says:

    If only they were cheap.

    • Jane St.Clair says:

Cheap to make maybe, not so much to buy.

      • Seth says:

        they’re turning kids into slaves
They’re turning kids into slaves just to make cheaper sneakers
But what’s the real cost, ‘cause the sneakers don’t seem that much cheaper
Why are we still paying so much for sneakers when you got little kid slaves making them
        What are your overheads?

I <3 Flight of the Conchords soooo much. :)

        • There’s people on the street getting diseases from monkeys
Yeah that’s what I said, their getting diseases from monkeys
Whys this happening, please, whose been touching these monkeys
Leave these poor sick monkeys alone
There sick, they’ve got problems enough as it is

          • Ninjinister says:

I saw a man laying in the street half dead, with knives and forks stickin’ out of his leg and he said… “Ow ow ow ow ow ow ow… can somebody get this knife and fork out of my leg, please?”

            • “Ooh, could somebody please remove these cutleries from my knees?”

              • Seth says:

There was a part earlier where we were talking about AIDS. Some people believe AIDS was originally contracted from monkeys. The animal, not the band. We wanted to change the attitude about it from “Ooooh, AIDSey,” to “Fun monkey disease.”

                • igloomccoy says:

Hey cool your jets, don’t sweat. Don’t flip, don’t get upset

                  • Kraas says:

Coming to get you, yeah, coming to take you away
You witches are evil, you worship the devil, so listen to what I say
Peacefully come out your huts or I’ll have you witches flayed
Must destroy you, play inside you, watch you wither away
Who’s coming to get you, coming to take you away?
                    I find you guilty, witch-woman, because I’m

It’s Business Time! It’s Business Time!
                      (It’s business… it’s business Time)
Doncha know when I’m down to my socks
                      It’s business time
That’s why they call them business socks ooh!

            • Vila Restal says:

No what he said was “Get this fork ‘n knife out of my leg!!” :-)

  2. me says:

I remember watching this on the news, brave bastard he was….

    • Me too. Hard to believe it was 20 years ago.

    • brak says:

This man had the Balls of Thor.

      • Tyler says:

I would say he had the balls of Fenrir. (Who let himself be chained up, willingly, merely to prove he could break them, and is one of the few Norse Gods who doesn’t identify allegiances with other Gods, and believes that humanity is noble and can do the right thing. Unlike the rest of the Aesir/Vanir.)
Anyway, can somebody give me a link to the actual news story?
I’ve seen the Tienamen photo dozens of times and it’s ALWAYS stunning, but what is the ACTUAL situation?

        • Tyler, short version, that month there were significant student protests in Tiananmen Square, the government sent the military and tanks in to disperse the protests, this guy stood in the way of one of the lines of tanks and moved to stay in front of it when they tried to go around him, engaging in a discussion with the driver in an apparent attempt to convince him to stop. The Wiki article on the protests gives a pretty good rundown of the political situation, etc. [link]

          • Tyler says:

Thank you, Diss. That guy was awesome. Good to finally know about the actual situation. :)

          • Maverynthia says:

The didn’t go around him, they went over him! Lest to say he became a pancake.

            • No…they didn’t. They could have, yes, but they didn’t. Eventually he was hustled off by police and nobody really knows what happened next. Except the people involved, I guess.

              • paws4thot says:

There was video evidence at the time showing that they did not drive over him. I think dissimilitude is correct about him being “disappeared” by the police.

              • T rigger :) says:

you can tell from the film that he was not arrested, for one thing, the police would have attacked him with clubs instead of pushing him away. If the cops had got him they would have dragged him away. the people who helped him away were friends who did not want to hurt him.

  3. DensityDuck says:

Hey, *I* didn’t ask to have everything be made in China. Neither did any of the rest of us, in fact. The decision was made by some mid-level account manager in his shitty little office in Chicago, made over his crap-ass generic coffee while he worried about his male pattern baldness.

    • ubr says:

in any agenda, political or otherwise, there is a cost to be borne. always ask what it is, and who will be paying. if you don’t, the person expected to bear the cost will be you. and you may not have what it takes to pay.

    • Squid says:

Yes, which one of us asked for our stuff to be made in China? Some prick decided that they could still charge a fortue for shoes that only cost them a buck or 2 to make. Why pay people here a living wage when you can have a whole Chinese family for the same price working until they drop dead.

      • ewwee says:

Or, have political prisoners working for free and making stuff to sell in the USA. Even more profitable than paying a pittance to a Chinese family.

    • X says:

You got that right. I still avoid anything with the “made in China” label. Then again I don’t buy cheap crap.

  4. BA says:

    Seems like a fair trade.

  5. Schmoe says:

And that’s just the high-profile abuse. Check the “we own you” attitude of any employer.

  6. Greg H. says:

Real simple. Don’t BUY THE CHINESE MADE SHOES! Buy RedWings, made in the USA, buy NewBalance, made in the USA, but Allen Edmonds, made in the USA. They last longer, are built better, and you’re supporting AMERICAN WORKERS!
Anyone who buys Nikes is a TRAITOR that thinks little kids chained to the equipment is OK.

    • paws4thot says:

Really? I wasn’t aware that it was possible to commit treason against a foreign power!

    • fabulous idea says:

Ah, but I’m not American and don’t care about supporting your workers. What now?

    • Tyler says:

…. Okay, this is just a post from trell. (Troll Hell.)
You shouldn’t be judged by what kind of shoes you buy, because of how they were MADE. You can’t assume everyone knows Nike’s worker’s conditions before they even BUY the shoe. Saying that is just asinine. (I wear New Balance by the way, so I have no personal reason to be defensive about it.)
On another note, anyone who calls another American a “TRAITOR” for what they wear is making a traitor of themselves. It’s called freedom of expression, we’re allowed to use it.

  7. ewwee says:

Has anybody noticed that the Chinese now owns our debt. Meaning they own us.

  8. Multi-Facets says:

(stands as tall as tiny body will allow, and SALUTES Tank Man.)

  9. sfg says:

    yeah, it’s really sad…

  10. Wyde says:

I wish my caption of this photo won… I was *checks voting page* What the Hell! Mine’s gone! This is bull! It was good, too!

  11. salutestankdude says:

Amazing also, how much you can bitch about other countries’ abuses while comitting them yourself

  12. Jersey says:

    i’m chinese from hong kong
yes..hard to believe its 20 years ago.
we are still fighting for democracy and freedom
    A MAN WITH BALLS!SALUTE!

  13. ummmmmm says:

PunditKitchen Lolz – suprising how boring they are when you’re trying to be both obvious and provacative.

  14. slaggingham says:

Seems to me I remember some Congress or other voting to give China “most favored” trade status.

That’s like when you open the door to business and say “get in there!”

Blaming business for getting in there afterwards seems more than slightly disingenuous.

Seems to me I remember some left-leaning political activists or other saying that it would “open up” China and make it politically freer.

That worked, huh? How’s Occupied Tibet doing?

Seems to me they’re the same guys who’ve been saying the same thing about Cuba lately.

Seems to me that doing the same thing and expecting different results is… what’s the word?

  15. lildarlinduck says:

Have ya’ll seen the whole video of this? The tank actually tries to go around him and he eventually runs into the crowd…he’s not flattened like everyone thinks. YouTube it. He actually climbs ontop of the tank. It’s gutsy but he doesn’t die for it.

    • Who the hell thinks that? Oh, wait…you youngsters that don’t remember being glued to CNN watching it. ;-) However, if I recall correctly there’s some evidence that he may have ended up dead at some point later due to his actions, I think.

      • Seth says:

The Chinese have become far more efficient since then. Now they have roving death vans equipped with lethal injection gear and an operating theater for immediate organ harvesting. I kid you not. [LINK]

        • bad fairie says:

I’m all for the death penalty and I think it should be a sentence for more crimes, but this is just wrong. It’s not even the number of executions since their population is so much higher than the US, it’s the mobility factor, that’s just ewww somehow.

        • pcflamingo says:

I thought for sure the link was going to be to The Onion site, but ewwww, this is real??

      • ubr says:

the chinese government has never confirmed nor denied that the guy was killed or is still alive. my bet is that he wound up in front of a wall within 24hrs… and i bet his family got the bill for the bullet too…

        • Vila Restal says:

Possibly bullets. If it was a firing squad then if they go along with normal procedures then at least one man’s rifle will contain blanks, just so that no one knows exactly who is responsible for his death and they can all go to their beds with a (slightly) clear concious. However if they do thngs the Russian method then they’ll be taken into a small room where the soldier given responsibility for the execution will put a pistol to his head and shoot him.

        • Tyler says:

If you watch the documentary-thing that’s linked to the LOL, (it’s actually pretty cool) ubr, the Chinese president has said “No…. I fink he…. He no die.”
It’s sad that students who went to the SAME school that was the majority of the original group of the student protesters don’t recognize Tank Man. And if you look Tienanmen Square in America, you’ll see dozens of images of the Tank Man. However, if you do it in China, you’ll get three pages with no images of the Tank Man. This is because internet providers here are DIRECTLY breaking a law that says United States companies cannot sell items that would allow censorship or control of the public, etc, to China. They sell products that allow China to filter and pick and choose the images and websites that can be browsed in the entire country.

  16. Tain says:

It’s quite hilarious watching people who have no idea what happened explode in a sinophobic fireball.

On the day of the supposed “crackdown”, most of the people killed were factory workers protesting against privatization of state-owned corporations who were beating on soldiers. The whole “students getting shot sitting in circles holding hands” BS the media fed you is just that, BS. Most of the protestors were, at worst, jailed and released a little while later.

Or did people just want an excuse to lash out at some random foreign country that the neocons are tells you could be a threat to your global status as the only superpower and the ideological equivalent of the Vatican? In that case, ignore everything said above.

  17. PortlandMark says:

I guess now would be a good time to say “DON’T SHOP AT WAL-MART!”

  18. Blaze says:

Every shoe I have bought since Tienanmen Square has been made in the US of A.

If we all only took the time to ask about the people who made what we buy, asked if they get a living wage, and basic human freedoms…

It is an easy habit to get into.

    • Krafen says:

I am curious how you calculated the “living wage” in the vicinity of the factories in China. How far below that value is the wage received by the workers? How does their wage compare to what they were earning before working at the factory?

  19. Jenifer says:

I vote we all walk barefoot from now on. Not only will it send a message that child labor sucks, but it will convince people to pick up their litter, lest they end up stepping in it themselves.

    • ubr says:

have you looked into toms shoes? you might like their stuff…

      • Hmm. I’ve never seen those before, and while I have to applaud the concept of providing shoes for kids that don’t have any, as well as the commitment to maintaining high standards for their factory workers, I have to say: Dude, that’s…like a $50 pair of house slippers. They seriously look like something they’d hand out to wear on your feet in prison, or in the mental hospital.

On the other hand, if you can pull that look off for work, I say more power to you. Gotta be comfortable, anyway.

  20. Firestorm28 says:

Mine was an actual motivational poster!!!!!! COME ON CANHASCHEEZBURGER

  21. Forge says:

Somebody better go explain it to Bush Daddy, who gave China “Most Favored” trade status like, the weekend after this happened.

  22. SB says:

MOST of what we buy has a CERTIFIED FAIR TRADE alternative so EVERYONE has a choice…

My husband doesn’t make a lot of money but because we are careful, we don’t smoke, we drink alcohol very rarely, we grow some of our own vegetables & I cook from scratch rather than buying pre-made we can afford the extra for the ETHICAL versions of things like coffee, chocolate & clothing…

We made the decision to do this & you can too…unless of course you are quite happy to buy products that were made by the exploited & poverty stricken…

    • Econ101kid says:

Not saying the current working conditions in sweat shops are acceptable, but you can’t ignore the fact that the exploitation also gives them an opportunity to work and earn money that they didn’t have before the sweat shop. **sits back and waits for the verbal abuse to begin**

    • paws4thot says:

And get exploited by big business yourself instead. There’s only one store chain I will buy “fair trade” products from, and that’s because that one prices its own brand fair trade goods with other stores own brand, instead of higher prices than brand name.

“The Market” cuts both ways, and expecting to maintain your percentage markup just because you pay suppliers a “fair price” (tr. way more than local prices and incomes justify) is simply moving where you’re exploiting people (if the producers were actually exploited).

  23. pam says:

i’m chinese. get a life, yanks. better focus on iraq and all that economic deep shit your are in now, instead of poking ur noses into other people’s business. besides, that was 20 years ago. americans used to torture slaves too. your country had a bloody past before its current glamour. so you’re the pots, we’re the kettles, all are equally black. period.

  24. Channy Macca says:

mi frend got raped the oder day and she said she has missed her monthly period.. what should i do too help her…
