Did you miss the bit where all of the landing crafts were American made? Or the fact that it isn’t that impressive that ONE country has 40% of the invading troops and three countries had the remaining 60%? If the British, Commonwealth, and Free French were so capable by themselves, why did they wait until the Americans came to try and free Europe?

And America supplied Russia with the materials it needed to win their part of the war. The whole reason D-Day happened was because the ‘Ruskies’ were pushing the U.S. and British for a second front to take the pressure off the U.S.S.R. So, obviously, the ‘communist hordes’ needed a little help breaking the back of the ‘Nazi war machine’.

Same with Russia. Russia was allied with Hitler until Hitler turned on them. And no one says that the U.S. contribution in WWII was chivalry. In the Japanese theatre, it was revenge, but in the European theatre, it was more than revenge. Even before Pearl Harbor, FDR was doing everything short of sending troops to Europe. U.S. supplies were what helped Britain stand alone.

So you are going to get angry at the Americans for being late about saving your sorry asses? Your father and his siblings should have put at least a LITTLE effort into stopping the Germans. It isn’t and was never America’s job to save you. Why should we? We are on another freaking continent. The only reason we EVER entered WWII in the European theatre was because Hitler declared war on us.

lateness? LATENESS????? It isn’t America’s job to save Europe from itself! France was arrogant and selfish after WWI and then really surprised when Germany got angry at them. France let itself be overrun in less than a MONTH. America liberated France in less than a YEAR.

i grew up on it and raised my kids to drink tea hot or cold. only one can’t handle cold tea, but she drinks hot all winter long. as for the rest of us, sometimes i expect tea to come out when i have blood drawn at the doc’s.

Eh what now? Charles de Gaulle was a hero of WWI and II, and I’ve never heard anyone comment on his personal character in those terms. My grandfather fought in France during WWII and he had nothing but respect for the Free French forces and their leader.

In other news, hi everyone! I’ve come down from my latest manic phase. Well, not full blown mania, just hyperfocus brought on by cyclothymia and ADHD. This time, the mania was actually job related, and I ended up putting in a bunch of unpaid overtime setting up this sophisticated open source network monitoring system. It’s nice when it coincides with work, but it still means a month or two when I become, for all intents and purposes, unavailable. At least this time the mania wasn’t ‘the history, performance, and tactics of the wooden sailing ship.’ That one lasted for nearly three months, counting all the ship modelling.

Jane, I will agree. I’ve been to numerous countries and if you go with the idea that America isn’t the end-all to everything that is great, you will have a terrific time. I don’t know if this applies to France or not since I’ve never been there.

My brother and sister-in-law did graduate field work in France one summer. Most of the time they were in the south of France but they did spend quite a bit of time in Paris and they said everyone there, even in Paris, was very nice and welcoming. I think that if you go on a trip expecting people to be rude, then people WILL be rude because that’s all you’ll be looking for. Your own attitude with be unconsciously defensive which will prompt the very behavior you’re worrying about.

Let’s just forget about the bravery of the French resistance and their contribution to the war effort. It’s not like it’s even harder to fight against the Nazis from in an occupied country and without your government giving you tanks, guns and air support.

While Britain and Russia were fighting against the Nazis the US had a “not my problem ” attitude until it had its nose bloodied at Pearl Harbour, so don’t pretend the tardy US contribution was simply chivalry and not revenge.
