He does look a little sissy. I have to admit though this falls under my meh category.

    • The French bashing cliche’ always hits high on my Meh-dar…

      • MsMsBurning says:

DeGaulle was a prick! His being French was just a bonus.

        • NotAmericanAndLovingIt says:

          Idiots.

        • Seth says:

Eh what now? Charles de Gaulle was a hero of WWI and II, and I’ve never heard anyone comment on his personal character in those terms. My grandfather fought in France during WWII and he had nothing but respect for the Free French forces and their leader.

In other news, hi everyone! I’ve come down from my latest manic phase. Well, not full blown mania, just hyperfocus brought on by cyclothymia and ADHD. This time, the mania was actually job related, and I ended up putting in a bunch of unpaid overtime setting up this sophisticated open source network monitoring system. It’s nice when it coincides with work, but it still means a month or two when I become, for all intents and purposes, unavailable. At least this time the mania wasn’t ‘the history, performance, and tactics of the wooden sailing ship.’ That one lasted for nearly three months, counting all the ship modelling.

    THIRD!!!

    • AC says:

Zymurgy or zymology is the study of fermentation. The word was originally used to describe the science involved in these processes but it has since become more broadly used to describe the brewing of alcoholic beverages. A zymurgist (or zymologist) is one who studies zymurgy.

Zymurgy is also the name of a homebrewers magazine. The word also can be found in the names of several organizations involved in brewing alcohol.
Louis Pasteur is considered to have been the first zymurgist when, in 1857, he noted the connection between yeast and the process of the fermentation. Pasteur originally defined fermentation as “respiration without air”. The German Eduard Buchner, winner of the 1907 Nobel Prize in chemistry, later determined that fermentation was actually caused by the yeast’s secretion of an enzyme that he called zymase.
Zymurgy is the last word in most English-language dictionaries, excluding proper nouns and onomatopoetic words.

  4. nicolas says:

Oh god, you are obviously jealous…
that’s a shame, you could learn so much from us!

    • AC says:

True… And the hat’s not that bad… Most dress-uniform-ish things look stupid to me and there are many worse…

  5. It is like a circle jerk of idiocy… American cliche’ proving why we are considered idiots and the European arrogance proving why there are cliche’s to begin with.

    • Dhoti says:

Yeah, but if we hadn’t bailed their lame asses out of the Big One, they’d all be lolling in German right now.

      • AC says:

*Considers making catty comment about lateness*
*Remembers that most Americans on PK aren’t like Dhoti*
        *Shuts mouth*

        • Already covered it for ya, this yank knows the score. ;)

        • DDayJuno says:

lateness? LATENESS????? It isn’t America’s job to save Europe from itself! France was arrogant and selfish after WWI and then really surprised when Germany got angry at them. France let itself be overrun in less than a MONTH. America liberated France in less than a YEAR.

          • paws4thot says:

Did you miss the bit wher better than 60% of the invading troops on D-Day were British, Commonwealth, and Free French? Or where we were half-way to Caen before you even got off the beachheads?

            • DDayJuno says:

Did you miss the bit where all of the landing crafts were American made? Or the fact that it isn’t that impressive that ONE country has 40% of the invading troops and three countries had the remaining 60%? If the British, Commonwealth, and Free French were so capable by themselves, why did they wait until the Americans came to try and free Europe?

      • If we hadn’t dawdled, they wouldn’t have had to hold off the Germans for as long as they did.

But by all means, let’s continue with the condescending attitude about a war neither of us were a part of.

        • Dhoti says:

Sorry, did I forget to close my sarcasm tag? Didn’t think it was subtle…

        • viking gal says:

Totally. Considering that my father and his siblings had to live under Nazi occupation from 1939 until 1945…lateness IS an issue!

          • DDayJuno says:

So you are going to get angry at the Americans for being late about saving your sorry asses? Your father and his siblings should have put at least a LITTLE effort into stopping the Germans. It isn’t and was never America’s job to save you. Why should we? We are on another freaking continent. The only reason we EVER entered WWII in the European theatre was because Hitler declared war on us.

      • M says:

Actually not true – the war was already turning in the Allies favour in Europe by the time America entered the war. You did help Europe with supplies though. At a price. How’s your Japanese?

      • Ceefax says:

Let’s just forget about the bravery of the French resistance and their contribution to the war effort. It’s not like it’s even harder to fight against the Nazis from in an occupied country and without your government giving you tanks, guns and air support.

While Britain and Russia were fighting against the Nazis the US had a “not my problem ” attitude until it had its nose bloodied at Pearl Harbour, so don’t pretend the tardy US contribution was simply chivalry and not revenge.

        • Eric-in-STL says:

Eh, deep down we all know it’s revenge.

        • DDayJuno says:

Same with Russia. Russia was allied with Hitler until Hitler turned on them. And no one says that the U.S. contribution in WWII was chivalry. In the Japanese theatre, it was revenge, but in the European theatre, it was more than revenge. Even before Pearl Harbor, FDR was doing everything short of sending troops to Europe. U.S. supplies were what helped Britain stand alone.

      • Wholesome says:

Yeah but if not for the French we couldn’t have won the Revolutionary War and gained independence. We’d all be speaking English right now. . . but with a queeny accent.

      • Forge says:

And if they hadn’t recognized us as a nation in the late 18th century, we’d all be drinking TEA and playing cricket.

        • bad fairie says:

i take it youdon’t get very far from home then. tea is one of most common beverages in the south, and those of us with southern roots have taken it with us!

          • I certainly took my Ice cold sweet tea to IA with me when I moved from MS…

            • bad fairie says:

smart person (moving from ms *g*)
i grew up on it and raised my kids to drink tea hot or cold. only one can’t handle cold tea, but she drinks hot all winter long. as for the rest of us, sometimes i expect tea to come out when i have blood drawn at the doc’s.

              • ;)

Lynn isn’t into tea at all so I drink tea infrequently but I still drink it often. I have started stating that I have too much blood in my caffeine system if I am too sluggish in the mornings nowadays.

    • spookyu says:

Lmao, and you know in the end, we’re all standing there with our wangs hanging out, and that’s just a little bit limp wristed now is it not?

…I’m not the usually the first person to bash the french…BUT, this time I gotta say give me my ABU’s any day :P

  6. Thomas Delfi says:

This is bullshit, De galle was a Hero

  7. Badsullix says:

Ohoh, the good ol’ discussion about who saved who … Without USA, we’d probably speak German right now. But USA entered the war actually just because one of their ship were stroked by a German torpedo, in the East Atlantic Ocean.
And, yes, you saved us, but, without La Fayette help, you’d probably also still be a British colony, and if Napoleon didn’t sell Louisiana, most of your territory would still be French.
So, God bless America and may the French wear whatever uniform they want. That’s our history~

    • solnesther says:

Please make some allowances for the irrational feelings some Americans have toward the French, they are the same Americans that voted for Bush. The Americans who have three digit IQs understand that there are some cultural differences between the French and the Americans, but those are not to be feared, but to to be celebrated. I have really enjoyed my trips to France and have gotten along well with the French people, with the exception of my brother-in-law Jacques who is an arrogant, insufferable, lazy, pompous ass of a Parisian, and who is probably the sole cause for the low opinion many Americans have of the French.

      • eddiepscetti says:

I’m sure that like Americans, for the most part, the French are nice decent people. My personal experience with the French would be more along the lines of your brother-in-law.

        • Badsullix says:

But he’s called Jacques, and is Parisian. Can not be other than arrogant and insufferable, I’m afraid (no cliché, just observation…).
I do believe that there are lots of Americans who have at least a bit of culture and knowledge in history, but sadly, the most represented in our media and therefore in our mind is the … Well, yes, old American nationalist cliché or red neck in his Texas ranch. (I’ve nothing against Texan people, by the way. That’s just how they’re represented in here, sadly).
That’s a shame your experience with the French went bad (where have you been, and why, actually?), and yes, most of French are nice decent people. But, as ever, the worst part seems the largest… Even if I don’t know how we’re represented in the USA (except of Fox News videos, sometimes broadcast on our non-public channels. But I guess this is not such a good example…)
Hopefully, Obama has entered the game ! Actually, quite a lot Frenchies are expecting a lot from him.

          • Confoozled says:

To answer but one of your questions: the French are mostly NOT represented in the USA. That is, you all hear a heck of a lot more about us than we hear about you.
            .
As for clichés, etc, if most Americans mostly go to Paris, they have a much higher chance of meeting Jacques et al. Just like if you only go to NYC, you’ll have a much higher chance of running into my asshole brother (well, he’d be an asshole to you, not so much to me).
            .
My experience is, get outside of the big city, outside of tourist season, and people will invite you into their homes, feed you and make you sample all their wine.
            .
(Note to self: check airfares to France. I’m thirsty.)

            • igloomccoy says:

I don’t think that French people particularly suck. Or that Americans particularly suck. I think that people suck. You can’t be racist if you hate everyone.

              • Wraitii says:

                There’s a name to that : xenophobic.

Anyway, I do agree with Confoozled… You can find pretty much anything in France… Some really nice people, and some assh*les that could easily compete with your Bush thing… Even a Berlusconi-like president.

                • Grumpy Curmugeon says:

“Xenophobic” means “fear/hate of strangers”. If you really hate everyone, that’s misanthropy. IIRC.

                  • Wraitii says:

You’re right… My mistake. But as we were talking about racism, I think my brain got a bit confused…

                • Badsullix says:

Well, at least our president seems intelligent. But I won’t say he remains less harmful than Bush… Yep, Berlusconi-like. *waits for his comment to be moderated*

            • Badsullix says:

I’m still young and haven’t travelled so much nor crossed the ocean, so I guess my vision is a bit biased, and based on what I see on the Internet (like, you know, the vid’ showing some Americans answering the “How many sides have a triangle?” question by 2… Actually, a French-man managed to do the same in France. Pretty impressive how you can show whatever side of the cube you want…)
Glad you saw the right French one !

            • eddiepscetti says:

My experience with the French was outside of France and half a world away.

            • Jane St.Clair says:

My brother and sister-in-law did graduate field work in France one summer. Most of the time they were in the south of France but they did spend quite a bit of time in Paris and they said everyone there, even in Paris, was very nice and welcoming. I think that if you go on a trip expecting people to be rude, then people WILL be rude because that’s all you’ll be looking for. Your own attitude with be unconsciously defensive which will prompt the very behavior you’re worrying about.

              • Confoozled says:

Yes, yes, you are right. Walk around with a frown on your face, and you won’t see a whole lot of smiles during your day.
                .
I did have a problem loosening up with guys who wanted to flirt with me. Once I realized it was harmless, and they weren’t going to try to make out with me on the subway platform, it was much more fun and less threatening!

              • eddiepscetti says:

Jane, I will agree. I’ve been to numerous countries and if you go with the idea that America isn’t the end-all to everything that is great, you will have a terrific time. I don’t know if this applies to France or not since I’ve never been there.

          • Eric-in-STL says:

Oh for the love of God, don’t let Fox News influence what Americans think of the French. You’re very right, Fox News is likely to not portray the French very well. Because it’s a very very biased and stupid news channel, but you clearly know that already. :)

      • nostromo says:

        3 digits?? as opposed to…..

    • Nope, the ruskies saved europe from fascism. The Nazi war machine was defeated by the communist hordes, it’s back broken in the siege of Stalingrad. Any serious historian will tell you as much.
The link is to the wiki article for Stalingrad, the most significant engagement on the eastern front, and the one that left Hitler without the manpower to hold what he’d taken. There are a whole raft of cites and references you can read around in the links to get the details and confirmation.
Not to put down the efforts of anyone who took up arms to protect their fellow citizens. Just get the facts straight; the US intervention in europe stopped everyone from winding up speaking russian, not german.

      • Damn linkage. Should be there now.

      • DDayJuno says:

And America supplied Russia with the materials it needed to win their part of the war. The whole reason D-Day happened was because the ‘Ruskies’ were pushing the U.S. and British for a second front to take the pressure off the U.S.S.R. So, obviously, the ‘communist hordes’ needed a little help breaking the back of the ‘Nazi war machine’.

        • paws4thot says:

This seems like as good a place to hang this comment as any of your other posts. Juno was the Canadian (primarily) beach on D-Day; if you’re as American as you act, change your name to Omaha or Utah!

    • Jessie says:

      Yay!

    • Jane St.Clair says:

But USA entered the war actually just because one of their ship were stroked by a German torpedo, in the East Atlantic Ocean

Forgive me, but I’m confused. Are you talking about the Lusitania? Because wasn’t that WWI?

    • Obviosity says:

      TOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO
      SOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOON!

      ROFL!

  8. owen says:

hey don’t be dissin’ on Charles De Gaule

    • Poodle Groomer says:

He had greatness thrust upon him. He was the only general outside of France when it fell. The Allies propped him up as the military leader of the free French.

  9. Ydeed says:

That’s a military uniform. There’s no fashion, french or not, appearing in the pic. Therefore, meh.

    • Stardrake says:

If you think that fashion isn’t involved in military uniforms, you don’t know military history….

      • Poodle Groomer says:

Absolutely, there are gays in the military; who else could design uniforms like that? Obviously he and Michael Jackson share the same designer. This is the casual uniform. Dress uniforms are required to have the puppet fascist rows of medals.

  10. nostromo says:

It’s the kepi I guess…it looks kind of funny…like the hat worn by French cops you see directing traffic. But in a military sense..it certainly doesn’t look prissy when the Foreign legion wear it.

  11. Ascatal says:

the french officers were wearing uniforms of that desgin before 1939, from late 1920s i believe

    • Wraitii says:

Right. And before, we wore nice colorful uniforms to help our enemies shoot us. That’s why we never lose a war, it’s only because the uniform wasn’t good enough. Or maybe not…

  12. Eric-in-STL says:

The problem here is it’s just not funny. *shrug*

  13. duda_mov says:

THE FRENCH FOREIGN LEGION …eating Delta Force and Seals for breakfast , since 1831.

    • Bootymama says:

Want to sell one French rifle. Never fired, dropped once.

    • Jessie says:

hahahaha, oh me goodiness, you funny guy sal. *Wipes away a tear* whew. No but seriously I didn’t realize the French were cannibalistic. Nor that Delta Force or Seals were pre-existing back in 1831, given that they were not created until the 1960’s. Hmm, curious, curious.

  14. Umba says:

Ah, will some grumpy French people here get a life, this is just for the lolz.

  15. squirk says:

America seems to be the only culture that routinely refers to it’s armed forces as “warriors”.

Same with sports players as “athletes”.

    It’s probably a homoerotic thing p

    • spookyu says:

Ok now that’s a little offensive to those who are in the US armed forces…..I don’t really pick what we’re referred to as…and there’s nothing homoerotic about me XD

  16. John Lennon says:

What a bunch of crap. As per usual greed, and false pride were the ingredients for this war, and all wars are stupid and avoidable if eyes are on the tiller, rather than lining pockets with money.

    • Eric-in-STL says:

hey, hold on, you’re dead! Dead people can’t talk! Unless…it’s a zombie attack! Zombie rock stars attacking!!!
“Imagine all the zombies, eating people’s brains…”

      • Confoozled says:

Great, now I have “In Zombie Lane…” running through my head, and I can’t even remember the words to the original.

In Zombie Lane, do do do do do dododo…”

  17. Echosong says:

and whats wrong with it??? what is your problem with french uniforms??? I, for one, am french myself, so WATCH IT!!! jerk….

  18. Mr_K says:

Im in Ur comments, wishin bad thingz

  19. Echosong says:

sorry, ive just been laughed and stared at all my years here from some people, and its REALLY annoying. sorry again for the snaps coming from me…

  20. Obélix says:

Oh look, some old French guy with a funny hat.
    Hahahaha!

    Whatever…
