Instead of trying to fix it, we should just continue are normal everyday lives and things will work out, but when everyone is like “OMG, I was intentionally living week to week and now that everything has gone up we’re fk’d, we’re all fk’d” things tend to get worse for those.

Go back 30years or so and the CEOs still made good money(even though it’s just a fraction of what they make now), tried their best and actually worked for what was best for the corporation long term and did a far better job then the CEOs do now.

There is much to be gained by bringing down the free enterprise system if one is in power is a massive personal gain. Cloward-Piven is a strategy involving overloading a bureaucracy to the breaking point with impossible demands for the purposes of gaining power and bringing down capitalism. (This was brought forward as *one* possible motive someone would have for destroying a country as opposed to helping it – power.) Yeah, it would be insane to actually follow the constitution and the free market which made us the most prosperous nation in the world – what a hoot.
The “free market” depends on one of two control mechanisms to function properly without the disastrous cycles of boom and bust that threaten to turn us into a third world economy. Those two mechanisms are competition and regulation. Where competition is inadequate to keep market players honest, there must be regulation.
Over the past 30 years it has been our policy to promote growth, to feed the furnace of mergers and acquisitions – to create mega-firms that are too big to fail and too big for new players in the market to compete with. To create, stated briefly, an oligarchy. We have also had a revolving door between Wall Street and Washington ensuring that the financial oligarchy was underregulated, and that what little regulation remained on the books was not enforced.
With no governors on the market at all, you see what happens. Boom and bust. Huge gains made on paper until the untenable risks and frauds piled upon frauds bring the whole house of cards down – whereupon most of us suddenly and painfully realize our gains were only paper, and the people who made exorbitant fees writing and shuffling the paper scurry away with their fortunes like the thieves in the night they always were.

It takes a major disconnect from reality to argue free market in the midst of an economic collapse due to rampant deregulation. We are all *living* the fail of the free market theory, after all.

wasn’t free market so much as open space – the westward expansion with all the natural resources to exploit coupled with pre-exsisting mechanical knowledge and then the added benefit of steam locomotion (the railroads & virtual slave labor). after that was the developement of the internal combustion engine (a european developement if memory is right) created the ability for people to relocate themselves or their products quickly.
free market gave us range wars, the near extinction of the american bison, the relocation of native americans to reservations with the what would be called genocide today, chinese slave labor, sweat shops, child labor, the tea pot dome scandal, the labor riots of the 20’s & 30’s, black friday and the collapse of wallstreet triggering the great depression caused by unethical business practices… shall i continue?
all these things have since been regulated against for good reason. and we’re living with the results of deregulation on investing. do you really want to return to a free market business structure?

I was reading bad fairie’s post above, and laughing at all the things which weren’t taught in my school. I think the only things covered in my public school
lessens were the teapot dome scandal, the impact of the steam engine, and black Friday…but not the impact of non-ethical behavior on that incident.
Which just depresses the hell out of me because I need to basically burn through a lot of history to get caught up with what really happened. Then I need to make sure my sons understand it too. @_@
May I recommend Larry Gonick’s cartoon guides to history? I’ve caught up on a lot of what I wasn’t taught through his cartoon guide to the history of the US, and his 3 ‘history of the universe’ books! This biology major didn’t have time to do history in college, but I’ve made up for it a lot since then!
