My understanding is that the girls start wearing the hijab once they start menstruation.
Kind of makes me wonder if they think that women are ‘evil’ or some such thing after they start their monthly cycle and that the men have to be shielded from the sight. (note sarcasm in this statement)
From what I’ve read, women are supposed to have 9 parts of desire, and men only one. So they drape the women to prevent the poor weak things from responding to how the men might react if they saw more of that female lusciousness. or something to that effect. Also, modesty is big. Men are supposed to cover all which lies between the navel and the knees (no short shorts, guys!). So it is a big more serious for the gals.

Eve was not born sinful she gave into sin. If we’re going to talk religion, Catholicism even worships the virgin Mary and mot denominations hold her in high regard, never in my 17 years of studying the Christian faith have I read/seen/been told that women are evil according to said faith and certainly not in the Christian god’s eyes.

Christianity (if we are talking strictly New Testament here) may not explicitly demonize women, however, if you read 1 Corinthians 11, it is quite obvious that they do not enjoy equal status with men.
And actually, within Islam, Eve is not held responsible for succombing to sin. It does not state in the Qur’an who sinned first, and the two are held mutual accountable for their actions. (Although, unlike the Judeo-Christian creation story, Adam and Eve are forgiven their sins, not cursed).
From what I understand, their culture was much better to women then Europe was for a while. Sadly, that’s not the case anymore. Also, I don’t think Mohamed ever said anything like that. In fact, I don’t think they focus as much on hell as Christians do.
I think it’s spelled hijab, and it depends on the girl as to when she starts wearing it. Also, it’s not just because women are evil; it’s a show of modesty. In the western world, parents wouldn’t let there daughters go out in public dressed like a slut; in Middle-eastern culture, its a similar idea.

By the way, I have numerous friends that are Canadian, and I really enjoy their company. Thankfully, none of them are of the French variety.
Because we’re actually really happy to be Canadian. Being Canadian is fantastic. We know that we’re considered to be overly polite and boring to the rest of the world. but we’re okay with that (like the Swedes but not as good looking, I’ve heard). One of our local stations runs promos for 30 Rock, wherein Steve Martin asks Tina Fey to run away with him to Canada – Toronto is just like New York but without all the stuff. Why do we run that? Because we think it’s funny.
Oddly enough – and somewhat related in this thread, I feel – the best American comedy TV series, in my opinion, is Flight of the Conchords. While it’s an HBO-production, it’s created by one Brit and two New Zealanders.

Okay, so that had nothing to do with Canada… I’ll blame Canada for that.
A: I think we probably feel that we need to assure the rest of the world that ‘we have the internet, too, we’re a proper country!’
B: We secretly fear that we are not a proper country.
C: As a nation that over-emphasizes sports, we tend to either assume a strong offense or defense – either we attack a bigger country before they can attack us, or we jump in to make the sheep-shagging jokes before anybody else can.
And our inferiority complex mostly comes from being mistaken for a small part of Australia.
Plus, we bloody made Lord of the Rings and it’s a bloody brilliant movie and we all either worked on it or know somebody who did! It was like a national confidence-building exercise, where for a few years we felt like we were getting attention from the rest of the internet. Some are reluctant to let go of the heady thrill that used to result from saying “I’m from NZ” in a chatroom!

We in the US have some rather notorious examples of (nominally Christian) populations marrying their underage girls to creepy old men (and parts of the country that still “allows” its underage kids to get married when they should still be in jr high.) So it came across to me as an American (and Christian?) pot calling the Iranian (and Muslim) kettle Now I did make an assumption that the caption writer is an American – and perhaps Christian since it is the dominant religion here – so I’m not immune to the cultural chauvinism, clearly.

Not a major objection – just had that latent Christian “log in your own eye” feeling from the caption, that’s all. Most of you people are just very ignorant. That country is Iran, it’s way more religious than Egypt. Most of the population of Iran is Shia; they aren’t Sunni Muslims like most of the Muslim population is. In the Middle East, marriage is very important in each Muslim’s life. Forcing a young girl into an arranged marriage is not allowed, yet a lot of parents do this. I’m talking about in countries like Yemen, Saudi Arabia, Morocco, and possibly Egypt. Just because you see the negative things on the news about morons blowing themselves up, honor killings, forced arranged marriages, abuse on women, doesn’t mean that all of the men in the Middle East do it. We aren’t allowed to date because we believe it will lead to violence, pregnancies, STDs, and etc. And most likely when someone is dating someone, they won’t be with each other together. This is why we believe in Arranged marriages. Yet I know a lot of you are thinking that Arranged marriages are old thing, some marriages like that do work out. In our religion, you’re supposed to keep your virginity for that person you will marry in your lifetime. In our culture, women are being controlled because they aren’t males, and because they must be virgins until their wedding night, while on the other side, the males (most of them), aren’t virgins themselves. Males can do what they please (most of the time) in their culture, while females are the victims of sexism, and rape.
And the thing about Female Genital Mutilation (FGM), it’s not really allowed in Islam. Yet the old traditional people think it’s a must for a virgin to have her clitoris and possibly other genitalia parts removed in order to make her more pure, don’t have sex before marriage, and also that her husband-to-be won’t complain about her clitoris bothering him during sexual intercourse. Instead of them watching the males, they constantly watch the females, in order for her to keep her modest, pure, and to keep her virginity. Which I found a hypocritical, but I can’t change that.
Those men who do these harsh or violent acts are not true Muslims at all, it’s just the they they were born. Most Arab men are abusive, from what I’ve learned and heard about. For me, being a Sunni Muslim. Our culture is mixed with our religion, which makes a lot of people (especially Americas) think that we beat our women pride and senselessly. Yet, it’s not right, and it’s a sin. We aren’t allowed to kill ourselves, yet the old men in Afghanistan and poor countries think it’s okay. They think it’s okay to oppress women when they are desecrating the Quran by changing the book’s teachings. Women can have jobs, and we are both equal. Yet in our culture, being equal is always not true.
Since Islam is a misunderstood religion, and some of you might be willing to learn about it, take a class, buy a book, or read online other than Wikipedia and Stereotyping Muslims from what you hear from the news.
I might not agree with some things my religion tells us that we must do, or what my culture tells me what to do, but I know that my culture will never treat women with respect. I just try to tell others about the issue so they can try to understand, rather than bashing my religion, rather than my culture.

I visit this site every day, and whever I see a photo of the Irianian President, or of a woman wearing the Hijab or head-to-to garment, you guys laugh your asses off by insulting the Muslim people. I don’t even think many of you guys don’t understand.

What the hell are you talking about? It’s our damn CULTURE. It doesn’t have much to do with the Quran. There are some things stating that women can’t do certain things, but when we have men who do the freedom to do whatever they want, they push their sexist standards on women. Where does it say that it’s okay to beat our women and children?
I’m not Allah, and I’m not the last prophet, so I CANNOT change what my religion says. I just try to explain others that the situations we see in the Middle East about abusing women and thinking that women should be second-class citizens is what these families believe in. It’s their contagious culture. It’s what the old men tell them what to do, or what is best.
I’m not as religious since I’m a modern Muslim, but it doesn’t mean I’ll do the same horrible acts if I have a daughter. I’m willing to be fair and caring about my daughter, and I’m willing to fight for my rights, and possibly fight for other women out there later on in my life.

Is it common that people think it’s a primarily muslim thing? I’ve not really come across that misperception in my life, I’m sure we have plenty of other erroneous assumptions instead.
It is common because people see it on the news, read news articles about it, and etc. Those people who are doing it have no respect or mercy. They think it’s right. But when Prophet Mahammed was still alive, I heard that the people were still doing that procedure. It’s okay for us to male circumcise, but not for a female.
A female can die since her clitoris is basically a nerve (bleeding to death), or that female can die during childbirth. But like I said, many of these people who do that, they kind of have no clue (their not educated, or are illiterate), and possibly don’t even care at all. They prize a girl’s virginity rather than her health.

To the Christians out there: When you insult Muslims, you insult yourselves and everyone of us who follow an Abrahamic religion, as well. Did you know that Rebecca was only 3 when she was given to Isaac? And that Bathsheba, one of King David’s wives and mother to King Solomon, was 9 when David saw her, fell in love, and then got her pregnant?

Actually, I’m not really stretching anything because the same hatred used in the times where people protested the dismantling of segregation is present in this “lol”.
And may I remind you not everyone follows the idea that the “new covenant” is exactly that? In fact, Muslims believe Jesus was a prophet, while many Jews question his existence/validity as a historical figure. And if you actually look into Islam, and research and READ about it, as you actually seem to come across as am intelligent person who happens to actually do that, unlike an unfortunately large portion of the population, you will find that Mohammad actually said for Muslims to be kind to the Jews and Christians. They are referred to as “People of the Book”. According to Mohammad we will also get ours in the World to Come, not just Muslims. Seems quite a bit more inclusive than Christianity, a religion I was raised in, where only those who come to believe in Jesus and ask for redemption from their sins, will ever see the good in the World to Come (ie, Heaven). Those who do not will get what they deserve in Hell.
What about the Crusades? What about the Spanish Inquisition? Didn’t Jesus teach peace? Whenever I have asked about this the answer was always, “Well, look back to the OLD TESTAMENT”…what? I thought it didn’t matter anymore.
And to give an honest answer to what might very well have only been a rhetorical question: I am here to exercise my right to free speech, as the captioner did, as you have done, and as the other commenters have done. Just as the person who made this had the right to express themselves, I have a right to express how utterly appalled I am at the thought someone actually finds this funny.
