Um… Gore was still saying Saddam was hiding WMD as late as September, 2002.

Blix was still saying Hussein was probably hiding anthrax as late as February, 2003.

I don’t believe that either of those claims are from a decade before March 2003…

@rho – we seem to be having a hard time communicating here. i’ve read about the ec and i don’t like the system. your comment about the “will of the people” changing between when i voted and when the electors vote doesn’t make much sense. how would the ec know that my vote should change?
isn’t that the entire problem? someone else decides who i’m going to vote for?
.
and the fact that someone abstained in the 2000 election proves my point that the system is not transparent. we did not abstain to vote that year, so why/how did that guy?

You oversimplify Unc, and worse, you aren’t even addressing the point Sproggie was trying to raise. Freedom from as opposed to freedom to. They are interrelated. My freedom to swing my fist ends at your nose, because of your freedom from being smacked. My freedom to swing my fist is a ‘natural right,’ in that I can just do it. Freedom from being smacked is not a natural right, but it IS rather a nice right to have, and so I give up my natural right, my positive freedom to swing my fist, in exchange for a negative freedom, the freedom from being hit.

Isaiah Berlin argued that (Yakov Smirnoff voice) in Soviet RUSSIA, POSITIVE freedoms curtail NEGATIVE freedoms. This is an argument often leveled at all modern forms of liberalism.

Personally, I think it’s all just silly semantic games. All freedoms derive from society, like it or not. ‘Freedom’ is a meaningless concept to a lone castaway. We can talk about freedom as soon as someone else washes up on shore. Freedoms are contractual agreements, you protect my freedom, I’ll protect yours. We’ll both give up some freedoms we don’t value as much for others that we value more. If we agree that ‘a right to enough food to eat,’ is a freedom we want more than, ‘I’m entitled to the fruits of my own labor,’ then so be it. It’s no different than the fist/nose thing. And good contracts all have non-fulfillment clauses. Ours happens to be basically, ‘men with guns will come and make you stand in front of a bunch of people who will decide the case.’ If we don’t like the contract, their are other options. That we may not like those options very much does not invalidate the contract.
