We get the exact same thing here in Sweden. I now live in a west-coast city fairly far south, we almost never get snow, but if one flake falls from the sky, me and my bf will look at each other and go “Uh-oh. Traffic chaos.” We’re both from further north and are used to seeing streets ploughed almost before you even noticed it snowed. Here, they do have a few snow ploughs, I think, becuase sometimes you see that typical scraping pattern that indicates a plough has been there. :p

It’s my observation that in New England and the Northern Tier states, fifth billion snowplows and salt trucks are up and rolling the instant the first snowflake flies — and really, you can see why they would be, because the alternative would be not to leave the house for six months. In the Southern states, they don’t consider it worth their while to budget for plows and salt trucks, so when the inevitable snow/ice storm eventually does hit, it ends up being a week-long emergency instead of something that could have been plowed away in a couple of hours.

I was trying to avoid the race slant… TBH, it looked to me like he was laying down something classic by Motorhead, but somehow, Obama does ‘The Ace of Spades’ seemed to have the ‘wrong’ vibe, even though that was what it looked like he was doing… I still like the idea of Obama laying down Motorhead tracks but to get anything other than other Head fans amused, it would have to be heavy handed…

One of my main gripes is with religious people who will say things like (this particular example I have heard on more than one occasion): “Well. Me, I don’t mind homosexual people, they’re nice and all, I am not a homophobe. But my Bible/Church* says that it is not what God wants, so therefore i think they should not be allowed to act homosexually.”

My friend’s parents are retired. Her father was
military, then contract-military, then worked for
Polaris (in Grand Forks, IIRC).

What I’ve seen of MN is pretty. I’ve been to Duluth
and a few other places, but most of my time up
north was in ID, MT, WY and the Dakotas.

I’m not in “Tornado Alley,” so that much is okay. It’s
a matter of personal preference, but we only get 8
or so 100º days a year. To me, that’s relatively mild
compared to the weeks of cold up north. I’ve never
had to dig my car out of the heat, but if you beg,
I can probably make up a Texas Tall Tale about
having done so…

The weather isn’t always brutal. Often, it’s wonderful (your results may vary)/
It’s beautiful up there, but if I was going to retire back in MN, it’d probably be on the North Shore of Lake Superior. I spent a lot of time up there gowing up and later as an adult before I moved away.

You have tornadoes. So does MN, but yours are far bigger and worse. You have thunderstorms (which I really really miss) which are bigger than those in MN. You have hurricanes. None in MN. You have heat waves worse than MN.

Everywhere has some negatives. CA had earthquakes and seasonal fires. You take the good with the bad.

Does your friends mom work up there? Are they on a farm or related work?

I can respect lots of things, but I can’t respect it if when asked why a person believes ‘A‘, their best answer is “because that’s what I was taught”.
In my opinion, you can get away with that answer until you’re about 12 years old. After that, if you’re going to hold onto a belief, you’d better be able to defend why.
