Your Pyracantha sounds like the victim of one of the most common landscaping mistakes made. The plant wants to be 8-10 feet tall and 10-12 feet wide. Whoever planted it in its place didn’t take into account the space the plant would eventually need. Pruning a plant stimulates growth, so your efforts to contain it are encouraging it to fight back harder.
If you move the Pyracantha to an area where it isn’t in the way, it will be a beautiful plant for you to enjoy. The berries are a delight for winter birds, so you may have a place where you can watch the birds from a window. If moving it is out of the question, a severe pruning (not a trimming) when the berries are gone would help you longer than what you’re currently doing. I’ve attached a link to a website showing the proper pruning techniques for the results you want.
If you decide to take the Pyracantha out, consider replacing it with a plant that tops out at the dimensions you want. It may look “empty” in the area at first, but you can fill in spaces with annuals until the new plant reaches its mature size. In your area, a Nandina, Barberry, or Loropetalum would be a good replacement. These plants all add color interest, but, again, check the mature dimensions, as cultivars of each of these plants vary.

Wow, thanks! The former homeowners planted the darn thing in a raised bed at the end of the driveway in front of the chimney. I’m not entirely sure how I’d go about moving it, but it might be worth a try. There’s some spots in the back where it could spread out and just be itself, I guess.
