Melissa is still recording, still puts on an amazing live show (is still touring with a wife and three kids). A lot of her newer work is shamelessly political – she wrote music for Al Gore’s “An Inconvenient Truth” among other things – but she’s still a huge talent.

As conservative christians go, Rick Warren is pretty benign. (sp?) On the negative side, his anti-homosexual creed adds fuel to the fires that cause so many violent crimes against gays and lesbians, and his forced-pregnancy beliefs don’t allow for the legitimate use of abortion in cases of incest, rape, or the health of the mother. On the other hand, his church sponsors programs to fight HIV/AIDS, illiteracy, and poverty. I’ve heard it said (but cannot document) that he gives 90% of his income to charity. Even Thom Hartmann and Melissa Etheridge are on record as saying we should give Rev. Warren the benefit of the doubt.

Additionally, Warren is only one of two pastors featured at the inauguration; the other is Joseph E. Lowery, who figured prominently in the civil rights movement in the fifties, so it’s not like Obama is totally caving in to the right.
