OK, the science teacher has to chime in here. Hemophilia is on the X chromosome, and most women have 2 of those, so they are very unlikely to have the condition–almost always seen in males (who almost always only have the one X). The Tsar’s daughters were quite likely carriers, who would have a somewhat slowed clotting, but not to the point of illness.
There is a more rare condition, Von Willibrand’s disease, which is similar, and is equally seen in males and females (not on the X chromosome). The gals who have it have very looong menstrual periods (hard to make those clots to close off the ends of those pinched off uterine vessels (in addition to the usual excessive bruising and poor wound clotting). And those females frequently end up anemic as a result.

I think what inbreeding does is to increase the chances of a recessive trait showing up in the offspring. If one of your grandparents has blue eyes (recessive), chances are slight that you will inherit them. If all four of them have blue eyes, chances are increased that you will inherit them (but still not 100% if you had a brown-eyed great-grandparent). Since your siblings and cousins are in the same gene pool, they’re likely to have have many of the same traits in common, so the likelihood of a recessive trait increases.
This becomes a problem, ick factor aside, when you have a person or an animal with a recessive trait that is detrimental to life or health (such as hemophilia). If you have two dogs that come from ancestors that have (for example) hip dysplasia, you want to avoid mating them so as to decrease the likelihood of the puppies inheriting that trait.
Anyone with more comprehensive knowledge of the subject, please feel free to jump in and correct me, kthx.

Females carry the gene, they tend not to exhibit the disease. They pass it on to their children, but only the males actually SHOW the symptoms. The royal family of (Tsar Nikolas?) had a hemophillic son, and the daughters were said to be fine, except that they bled a little more than normal. It wasn’t the gushing blood that could happen if the son was cut.

I’m not sure the word “cured” is strictly accurate, but wouldn’t hemophilia have been… phased out… in females hundreds of years ago? Not to be gross, but wouldn’t a female with hemophilia bleed to death the first time she got her period, thus ruling out any possibility of passing on the gene? Or am I missing something?

BTW, doesn’t excessive inbreeding eventually weaken the line? I’ve heard people say the healthiest breed of dog is a mutt because it doesn’t have all the inherent genetic weaknesses of a pure breed. But this may just be true for dogs…

Hyperthyroid ALWAYS leads to HYPOthyroid, cause the excitotoxicity kills off the Thyroid cells- so she cannot have stay hyper her whole life- she woudl swing, if she has the typical pituitary gland based thyroid issues…which are the ones that cause HYPER that I am aware of (was Dx with Hashimoto’s autoimmune Hypothyroid a few years ago so got a little obsessed with reading up on it- not an MD though, so this info is just what I gleaned form reading, could be wrong).
