As to what passes for Conservative in the US… let’s just say the empty patriotic mouthings, coupled with equally empty piousness, while indulging in gleeful shadenfeude over how many one’s state can put to death (99 times out of a 100 from someone who has never had to kill a man and watch him die) while extolling the virtues of family to legislate to limit others civil just gets

Let me try to say it another way. It’s not the blind devotion I admire, it’s the fact that someone has a world view or set of principles and sticks with them. Ann Coulter doesn’t believe what you believe, and to your eyes is extremely right wing, to the point of being a whacked out idiot. To my more right wing eyes, she’s not nearly as whacked out. I don’t agree with her all the time, but she does bring up good points. I admire the fact that she has reasons for believing what she believes and she sticks with it.

Here’s the only example I can think of to illustrate it better: I am a Southern Baptist Christian (scared yet? lol). I do not hold to the beliefs of a Muslim, nor do I think said Muslim is doing the right thing. However, I can admire the ferver to which that Muslim espouses his beliefs. Ann Coulter may spew what you see to be hatred, but she has never advocated violence or anything other than spirited disagreement with the other side. She is like the Muslim who may want the 72 virgins but won’t fly the plane into the towers to get them.

Does that make it any more clear? It’s not the pounding your head into a brick wall over and over part that I’m admiring. It’s the fact that she doesn’t let public opinion or what people think of her choose her beliefs for her, as so many do.

And now to take you seriously (well, you know). First, I’m not sure the article I posted is the same one I read. From my description, it seems I’ve extrapolated overmuch, or I read something else entirely.
I have trouble understanding some conservative statements I’ve seen on here. This may be true on both sides, but it seems that the more extreme the view, the more viciously it’s defended. (Exception trolls, natch.) You’re a reasonable, amiable person, but one thing you wrote recently I’m still trying to figure out. I can appreciate a person having the courage of his/her convictions, but not in the face of valid adverse evidence. The person you described (I think it was my BFF Anne Coulter) sounded more like a pit bull to me.
I’m floundering, but maybe this is a good example. Pretend you’re the cute chick in a scary movie. The evil hurty guy (Michael, Damien, Chucky, etc.) doesn’t listen to you, is not swayed in the slightest by your value to your friends and family, won’t listen to logic or valid protests, and totally lacks compassion. In essence, he’s a dull-eyed shark, and you’re what’s for dinner. That’s how I feel in the midst of intensive conservative thought. How’s that?

Seems like there is a quote somewhere concerning being liberal when young and conservative when old. I think it’s something like ‘if you’re not liberal when you’re under 30 you have no heart, if you’re not conservative when you’re over 30 then you have no brain.’ I think I have no heart sometimes It’s just difficult to understand the liberal point of view for me. I am aware of it, and I try to empathize, but it’s as foreign to me wearing a kimono to work.

I’ve found that to be the case, and I’ve done all of the “put yourself in his/her shoes” scenarios I can stomach. My brain won’t wrap around some of the stuff conservatives have posted on here.
I wish I could go back on the MILF LOL, but, for some mysterious reason, that LOL locks my PC up. I’ve been on other LOLs with large post numbers, with no problems, so whatevah…
I read/heard something about an article indicating there may be a statistically significant difference in the neurotransmitter compositions of liberals and conservatives. Of course, quantifying “amounts” of intangibles is always fun, but it was an interesting notion. The conclusion (?) was that the chemical composition in the conservative brain allowed the person to feel less remorse about getting unfair advantage over others. (No flaming–bias noted–just saying…) I’ll try to find the article tomorrow.

See the posts by SK on the MILF LOL. That’s fairly typical of the angry conservative on here. I am not saying there are no angry liberals or that ANY of us are saints, but I really don’t see how there’s really any comparison of the amount of hate flung about by liberals compared to conservatives. I don;t know why that is, but hate and denial run rampant amongst the conservative wackos at a much higher degree. Maybe it’s because people like Larry Craig, in their party are filled with the same sort of hate and denial, but I have no explanation. I mean Seth is probably the MOST liberal person here as a self-proclaimed socialist, but he rarely gets truly angry and mean. If you can provide examples of where you think this is actually balanced, I’ll concede the point, but I think the hate scale definitely tips one direction. (again, not saying there are NO liberal haters, just fewer than there are conservative ones. Plus the liberal haters are usually less caustic as well)

I know that. Maybe she’s never had that sort of hardship. She holds to her viewpoints most of the time, but every now and then she can bend if you make a good argument. Some people just don’t “get it” until they face the situation themselves. I know people aren’t getting rich off welfare. I know the requirements to get any assistance are dismally low. You have to practically be already on the street for some programs. I think there ought to be more initiatives that allow people to get back to work faster so that there is less likelihood for abuse. The requirements being what they are in some states, there isn’t always an incentive to get a job because you’ll automatically disqualify yourself making minimum wage. That’s impossible to live on, even for one person as I’m sure you know. Let alone if you’re trying to support someone else. Figuring out how to fix the system so that it works as intended is a conundrum.

Personally, I think most people WANT to work. You definitely feel better about yourself if you can provide for yourself. It’s human nature. I’ve also been in a tough luck situation but not qualified for any help from anyone. What’s a person to do?

I’ve worded this all badly, as I’m way overtired and past my bedtime. I have disagreed with froofrou on this and other issues, but I do think she tries to be a good person. She just has a different worldview. It’s up to us trying to get her and others the right information, instead of just the pundit version that she has, so she can make a more informed judgment. She usually will admit when she’s been misinformed. I personally don’t think she means to be classist, even though some of her arguments come across that way. She just doesn’t have all the info to make a judgement.

Sorry if I sound like I’m defending her too much. I definitely don’t agree with her on many (maybe even most) issues. Just that we try to be fair and have civilized discourse, rather than throwing hate back around. It solves nothing and makes people not listen to your arguments. She’s more likely to listen if you’re respectful. Disagree with her views all you like! I do.

I also don’t think I’m being in the least bit disagreeable. I *do* find it slightly disingenuous that the extreme left gets to toss the word “hate” around whenever they don’t like what someone says, but anyone to the right of left-center does so, and we’re “trolling”. So yeah, when I see the left doing it, sometimes it’s fun to throw it back and see the reaction.

You’ll also notice (or not) that you’re repeating something I said, to you (more than once) — that a difference of opinion doesn’t mean you’re brainwashed. It’s nice to see you took me up on that, sure, but only a couple of days after accusing me of the same bullsh*t? Again, somewhat intellectually dishonest.

It’d help if she’d at least get her entitlement programs straight before trying to tell the rest of us how abused they are. I saw a list on the discussion page at Wikipedia that was about the TANF program and they said that a family of two gets less than five hundred a month. Sorry, I don’t see how someone getting that small amount for a two-person family is living high on the hog. I *really* don’t understand why so many people hate welfare families.

And no, I’m not on any of it. The most I’ve done is Medicaid and WIC and I’m not even on those now, haven’t been for years. OMG, I wanted to get healthcare for my child, and for us both to eat. What a crime.

You know, kicking someone when they’re down is worse than spouting hyperbole about hating America. Except for the utter chutzpah involved in doing your utmost to give someone a reason to hate America, then yelling at them for it. I’m glad you personally find things to like about classist thugs who pick on the poor because they’re easy targets, but I can’t.

Maybe not Teddy as much, I was referring mostly to Bobby civil rights, labor, etc. The one thing I’ll say specifically about Ted is that he’s reached across the aisle on a number of occasions to try for bipartisan initiatives. He’s been willing to work to find common ground.

BTW, it’s possible to be an informed debater, have a difference of opinion and not be a brainwashed kool-aid drinker. I can deal with disagreement, just don’t go into insults, k? It lessens your credibility.

You’ve been getting into pissing matches with both liberals and conservatives today (neither is a bad word, just different points of view), and generally stirring the pot like a troll. You can do better, but stick to the issues. Learn to agree to disagree. I get along fine here with conservatives like ema, froofrou, eddiepscetti, and matthew, as well as liberals like Seth, and moderates like DWN because we all can take a step back and respect the other’s opinion, even when we disagree. You’re not winning points for your positions when you can’t accept differing viewpoints as valid, yet different. Sometimes there’s a true right/wrong view based on facts. Often it’s not that simple.

I haven’t agreed with Bush for (like I’ve said before) at least the last 3 years, but I don’t think he’s the worst president ever, nor do I think he’s damaged the country beyond repair, bailout notwithstanding. I can’t see the Kennedys for anything other than cronies themselves who are only interested in preserving a shaky legacy that is only around because their shining star got taken down in his prime. And because of John John. That’s extremely unfair of me, I’m sure, but I find it hard to see the good in the Kennedys because of the bad that’s in the way.

Like I said. They’re still politicians. At least they generally wanted to work for the common man, like mark said. They definitely weren’t saints, but they contributed to the culture of the nation as well as the evolved culture of the democratic party. Bobby did a lot for labor–the working man, civil rights. More even than JFK maybe.

Definitely more contributed to the welfare of the nation than the Bush Dynasty. All they did is line the pockets of their cronies and screw the common man.
