The Foreign Legion gives people a chance to start over in their lives, while fighting for what they consider a noble cause. It gives many men a second chance; they even change their names upon enlisting. French citizens are also allowed to enlist; they are allowed to declare a fictitious foreign citizenship. The men are trained to work as a team, despite national, cultural, racial, or religious differences. Many of those who enlist are refugees, or just people looking for a steady wage and a second chance at life.
It has very little to do with nationality, and even less to do with aiding allies.
(By the way, they currently have a unit stationed in Afghanistan.)
But, IMHO, they certainly could use some new uniforms…those are fairly ridiculous. All the red and green against the white is a little too reminiscent of candy canes.
French Foreign Legion, created by the French government to employ foreign nationals as a military arm (outsourcing jobs) to oppress French colonial citizens and native cultures. Makes Blackwater look like a bunch of pansies.
Yeah, that’s the impression I get from them as well. Giving a thug a “chance at a new life” by turning him into a thug in uniform doesn’t strike me as a significant improvement. However, I admit I’m not an expert on the FFL; it may be they’ve fought for some noble causes I’m unaware of.

You know what’s funny, Read the ARC thread again. We accused Magnum of being Bob and GOM responded saying it wasn’t him. He hadn’t been anywhere near that conversation, but apparently forget which sock was which. it’s quite amusing.

They’re most often used as UN peacekeepers these days, although they do have a Really Big can of whoop-ass if they need it. Of late, Afganistan, Iraq, Haiti, Ivory Coast, Kosovo, and SE Asia for tsunami relief.

Well, right war, anyway. I think it would depend on the nature of their duties. Traditionally, they have always fought in out-of-the-way corners of the world, against poorly armed indigenous people. I think.

That’s a “képi”
It’s a standard French uniform hat, as worn by the military and the police. It comes in various colors, depending on the rest of the uniform, and is called a képi.
The police doesn’t wear those anymore. Possibly the gendarmerie does.
The police still wear them for parades. And yes, the gendarmeries till wear them. I couldn’t imagine a gendarme without it. (with the exception of the GIGN and National Guard of course.) What’s the name of the french legion that is the only one allowed to have a beard, which is even part of the traditionnal uniform?

You think so? I used to live in Greece, you should see their Honor Guard. Click my name for a pic, and check out the shoes with the pom poms on them. Their marching gait makes John Cleese’s ‘Ministry of Silly Walks’ look positively restrained. Seriously, they kick their leg way up, swing it way back, then take a tiny little step.

The tights and the graduation tassels bring the whole outfit together IMO.
Still pictures do these uniforms no justice, their true beauty only comes out when the soldiers are parade-walking. They swing their leg way forward, then way back, then take a little hop-step, tassels and pom-poms flouncing away the whole time.
Those chin straps would bug the crap out of me…
