As for schools, and fire, and police — that is the domain of state and local authorities (this presuming you mean that invoice is my federal tax bill).

Bush didn’t spend money, the President has no power of appropriations — that is reserved for the Congress, who have done a bang-up job of mortgaging us into oblivion. There are 538 individuals (more, considering turnover and those voted out) who are responsible for that 8 years of spending.

However, on the coasts, where higher concentrations of LGBT populations live, and as a result “sensitivity” (and sometimes law) is tuned higher, it’s more likely that the path of least resistance is simply to hire the minority candidate. Corporations typically are very risk-averse, and inviting even the possibility of a orientation- or gender-based lawsuit isn’t worth it. Ditto for getting rid of a bad employee once you have them; even though many (all?) states are employment-at-will, where both the employer and employee have to right to terminate employment at any time, for any stated reason, as has already been pointed out, in the overly litigious society in which we live, it’s safer not to run the risk of an LGBT employee claiming bias in the termination.

Isn’t this the best of all possible worlds in which we live?

The point is, for many on the “no on 8″ side, it *is* about “just being able to do it”. Newsom made the cardinal error of revealing that goal in that little speech of his. They tried to tell us for years, that it was just about being able to do what you said: end-of-life medical decisions, visitation, probate and estate rights, and so on. So they got that with Domestic Partnerships. But it wasn’t enough, because — you guessed it — that’s not the real agenda.

And you wonder why otherwise rational individuals vote against them…

As for the Democrats taking the Constitution seriously, you’ve got to be
kidding. While they’ve had a lock on the ABC, NBC, CBS, MSNBC and
CNN they’ve been trying to shut down conservative talk radio and
any other avenue including political blogs that disagrees with them.

Once you give government the ethical authority to decide at what income level you become rich enough to be bent over, the actual income level it sets is totally arbitrary. Today it could be $250k, tomorrow it could be $100k and next week it could be $60k.

–I wish I could afford a vacation. I’ve been married 5 years and still haven’t had a vacation with my husband. We’re hoping maybe if we get a decent tax refund… Probably will be less than last year’s though.

I think I might take that vacation I have been pondering, I will know by the end of the day I guess. Just tired of the same argument over and over again.

Single payer provides uniform health coverage for everyone, regardless of employment, economic status, home region, etc. It still allows competition among hospitals and doctors, pharmacy, etc. Doctors are still free to provide the care they see as best for the patient, rather than what fits in the budget. Patients can still choose their medical providers. All it means is that everybody has access to an insurance program to help defray the costs.
