Oh believe me, I know that they’re trying to get to me, that’s why I waited until they left before bawling like a baby. We’re just engaged in a battle of wills right now. I feel sorry for the five, maybe six, kids that would do the right thing, but there is no way right now I can separate them out and do stuff with them.

And it probably doesn’t help, but I know from experience that some of those ‘lovely’ kids enjoy getting on their teachers’ nerves. I once had a smart 18 year old admit to me that she and her friends had weasled a part-time prof into making intro psychology easier for them. And this was a smart and nice kid! (I saw that word got back to that prof that the ‘little darlings’ were hosing her.)
Unfortunately most of the tricks of the trade that I have will only work with college-age students, or I’d pass them on. But maybe it would help to know that even in a class of bozos, there is always someone who actually wants to learn? Usually too shy to speak up in class, unfortunately, but still, present…

I’m working really really hard on not letting this sour me to the profession. To be fair, I’m most comfortable with the primary grades (1-3) although I can handle 4 and 5 but 6 is starting to push it. There are some really neat kids in the classes I teach and I’ve had some interesting conversations about books and recommended things to them that I can’t do with younger kids. However this one class is really ruining the experience for me. They left and I cried for 45 minutes during my prep period on Friday, I was just at my wit’s end as to what to do.

ick i just wouldn’t be able to handle that. I personally don’t like kids. I’ve had people tell me I should become a teacher, but i highly doubt the spread of misanthropy is needed in the classroom.

A short attention span and difficulty concentrating (even taking the myspace out of it, although that is true) is something that I can work with. Indeed, five of my six classes have that problem and we manage to slog through. My sixth class though is the absolute worse. It’s almost like the school said, “hmmmmm, we have this six classes of kids who failed their reading test, how can we make this an even worse situation? I know! We can take the 20 kids with the worst behavior problems and put them in a class together! That’s a great idea!” So, yeah… that’s what I’m dealing with. And I’m an elementary person, high school is hard for me anyway!

Yeah, My stepkids mom is like that. She’s a piece of white-trash work. her answer to the kids having problems in school is to have them go to resource room or stay after. She doesn’t even check their homework. She gets worse every year. Dad(my husband) gets a raw deal from the courts simply for being male, so doesn’t get the kids at first, then enough years go by and the situation worsens. Problem then becomes the fact that the kids are old enough to vote for where they want to live. being kids, they choose mom because “she lets me do whatever I want. Dad is mean, he makes us do our homework and brush our teeth. ” Hopefully they will figure out what’s best for themselves before they get old enough for it to be too late. Every other weekend isn’t enough to counteract this.

I like what Obama said about the fact that school can’t do this alone, that parents need to turn off the t.v. and read with their kids. Right now I’m teaching high schoolers with reading problems and it is sooooooo frustrating, but not for the reasons you would think. A lot of this kids are so used to their parents making excuses for them and threatening to sue the school and the school caving every time they do that they have this sense of entitlement and lack of work ethic that is almost impossible to work around.

It was because he was saying how much he liked being a troll to piss people off. I told him I wasn’t pissed but had pity instead and posted references about how trolls are lonely people who get off on causing flame wars, etc. It’s on the b-3 caption. He got so mad at me he hijacked my name while I was tsalking to Max, that he posted porn to insult everybody (particularly me). Turns out the moderators have at least a few limits. They removed the posts and blocked him. I thank them very much.
