Why is it that conservative Americans who hold to certain ideals are automatically shot down? Just answer me that. Is it because the freakishly liberal media is in the majority right now, so that anything a Republican says is twisted until it has no semblance of the original words that came out of their mouth? Before you shoot me down for maligning the ‘god-President’ that is Obama, let me tell you a few things the man has done. He sat in the congregation of a pastor who damned and ragged on America at every possible turn, was friends with a known, nonrepentant terrorist, who, may I add, before you say “he didn’t know” the guy BABYSAT for Obama’s kids! Now if that’s not trust I don’t know what is. And, out of Obama’s mouth, he said this: “I will make the taxes on the coal industry so high that anyone who tries to start a new plant; we’ll bankrupt ‘em.” Now, I know the CONTEXT of the speech, so don’t shoot me down for that. He wants a greener economy for the US. You have to do that with SAFEGUARDS and gradual PHASING, not an instantaneous removal of one of our sources of prime income!

The problem is, without a profit margin how can you expect to expand your business, compete, or upgrade your infrastructure. Most companies don’t just rake it in then laugh on their way to the bank. They are always considering how to make the company better. I would agree that most people are good and decent, and in fact money can make one gluttonous for more. But the issue at hand is still taxing a thriving company because someone thinks their bottom line is too high.

We CAN’T just do a general tax cut. We can’t afford the spending we have now, especially on the war(s). With an overall cut, we will just go farther into debt and increase the deficit. it’s unlikely the national debt will be paid even in the next 30 years, but we hopefully will do what we can to stop it from growing more.

Just watched McCain’s concession speech. He was pretty classy about it. More like the old McCain before he became such a right wing tool. His followers actually booed Obama’s and Biden’s name, in true divisive fashion. He seemed sincere in trying to quell this. Except for a couple small things that may have been laced with multiple meanings, it was a good speech. He seemed to want to try for unity now, although it will take a while for people to buy it based on the way his campaign was run. I have somewhat more respect for him now. If he had behaved that way all through the campaign, it would have been a closer race. Hopefully we will have learned from this as a nation to avoid politics of hate, at least for a while.

I know you don’t like O’Reily, but he did have a good point the other day. He played a clip from Martha Stewart that said she would ’suck it up’ with the rest of the country and pay more taxes personally and publically through her corporations because that was the right thing to do. O’Reilly said ok then, let’s see how many people you lay off in the first 4 years of an Obama presidency. For cost-related reasons. And if you don’t lay off a single person because your cost is too high to run because your taxes are now too high.

It’s worth thinking about. Rich people and rich corporations are going to raise their prices in order to cover the bottom line. You’ve said it yourself that the rich are greedy, and that being true will only cause prices to rise for the middle class and those who can’t afford it in order for the greedy rich to stay rich.

That’s a nice theory, except that money allows one to make an end run around the free market and competition. Money is power. It can be sued to keep out competitors, form oligopolies, bribe suppliers, crush unions, and destroy the worker’s spirits. The more money you have, the more power you have to determine the valuation of things. It’s like we all get to vote on the cost of things, like our labor, but the top ten percent get 90% of the votes, and THEY say, your labor isn’t worth that much.

Ok, we’re back on the same path. I don’t disagree that we should be taxed on wealth level. I do believe that everyone should pay their fair share. It just sounded like you were saying that nobody should be able to attain that level of wealth. I did indicate in a previous thread that I would not be opposed to something like a 15% tax liability without any write-offs. That would certainly level the playing field substantially.

But society doesn’t reward anyone beyond what they are worth because of competition and the free market. Also, I may have stated that badly, yes God wants us to be concerned with our neighbors on an INDIVIDUAL basis, not just giving our money to a government so we don’t have to be involved. We are supposed to do it ourselves. A community that acts together is fine, that is why I am ok with smaller local socialism, but smaller federal government that will not have the danger of becoming big and bloated and self interested, the same things you fear about big business. Yes, we need protection and the protection should come in the form of laws and regulations from our government. Not ever increasing social programs and government control of free markets, like how much a person can own or make. There will always be people who are richer than me, I don’t mind that just like there are people smarter or prettier. It’s not the governments job to make us all equal.

And good people become wealthy all the time, you don’t have to step on others or abuse others to become wealthy anymore than you do to get elected or to become popular. You just have to convince people to buy what you are selling. Since we have a free market, if you don’t like one company you can

Nobody is worth millions of times what someone else is worth. Especially when some people are still starving, even here in America. Well, maybe scientists who make discoveries that improve the lives of billions of people. But not CEOs, not actors, not sports stars. The thing is, it is easier for a scoiopath to become wealthy than it is for a good person to become wealthy, because aq sociopath has no empathy with the people he is stepping on. Why do we want to reward sociopaths with fabulous wealth?

And think, what is that fabulous wealth for? It is for controlling other people. Sure, a small portion of it might go to goods and services, but most accumulated wealth is used as a tool to extract value from other people’s hard work. Ema, there is a reason that usury (lending money for profit) was a sin in most major religions, until recently. He is basing it on past conversations where I have flat out stated, “I am a socialist.” I think there should be a maximum wage, just like there is a minimum wage. I also think income should be taxed on wealth level, not income level. That is, a poor person suddenly making a million a year should be taxed as a poor person until they accumulate enough wealth not to be poor.

Most patriotic Americans on the right will give the office the respect it is due. I will agree based on my short time here thus far that PKers on all fronts tend to be pretty darn patriotic, and that the majority of them will indeed respect the Presidency itself, regardless of who wins.

Lay off of froofrou, she actually thinks for herself. She just has different opinions. The world is big enough for different opinions, and America is strong enough to tolerate dissent. PK may look like a chaotic troll fest, but there are a core group of people here from both sides who are smart, insightful, and who act like a real community, i.e. we take care of each other, and treat each other with respect. . I may be a hard core liberal, and froofrou may be a conservative, but we are both patriots who love our country. I never doubt that for a second.

My feeling is that the cost of goods and services will rise, but the amount of money in the hands of the working class will rise as well. More money will flow through the local economy, and businesses will make less profit as a percentage of gross sales, but a higher dollar amount. As a restaurant manager, I can deal with that just fine, thank you.

It’s breath-takingly naive to think that business will pass their tax cuts onto consumers. Over here, the price of gas and energy went down massively. Did fuel prices go down for consumers? Did they bollocks, instead the energy companies payed record bonuses to management, huge dividends to sahreholders and posted record profits.
