  12. bobblehead says:

    He’s not black. He’s interracial.

    • froofrou says:

You use the race of the father. He’s black. If his dad had been white, he’d be identified as white.

      • The Failcop says:

Yet with jewish descent its the opposite… a maternal bloodline… interesting.

        • froofrou says:

Never studied the Jewish descent. That’s just how it was explained to me.

          • Maxwell Silverhammer says:

Oh that is the way is in America.. just stating how its backwards elsewhere.
Also if I remember right, in genetics, arent most of the female genes dominant?

            • hergieburbur says:

In America, IF your skin is dark, you are black. At least among most whites. I am not saying that is correct, just how it is.

              • miss_scissors says:

Actually, i have a friend whose half black and everyone thinks she’s
                Mexican.

                • Helen says:

                  I have a friend who’s indian and everyone thinks she’s black. =P

Indian as in India. Not American-Indian. Just FYI.

              • Claire says:

He is NOT Black. He IS Interracial. People are going off saying the first black president of America. but the fact is that he is interracial. end of story.

                • herb says:

                  And Spock was only half-Vulcan.

Seriously, though, the man is not a WASP.

                • Jocasta says:

Except he identifies as being black, doesn’t he? Which is what matters most, in the end.

                  • froofrou says:

To each his own, but it’s weird that he identifies as being black, yet he was rasied ‘white’. Ah well, doesn’t matter :-) I hope he does a great job!

                    • Jocasta says:

Maybe it’s weird; it’s not my issue to comment on, as it’s not my skin. And you’re right. In the end, the job is what matters, and I do have hope he can do a good job. So, we’ll see. :3

              • wundawomun says:

Yeah I’m Mexican & my son is half black & all the white people at church call him black. He was asked to take part in a question answer session & the person who was casting said she needed someone to represent blacks & her husband came up with my son. lol He looks Cuban or Puerto Rican to me, but whatever. He relates to my side more than his dads.

            • Andrea says:

I figured it was a hangover from the “one drop” rule. “If you’re not white, you’re black!”

Females’ genes aren’t dominant (at least not by virtue of being carried by the mother)… Maybe you’re thinking of traits that are carried on the X chromosome (e.g. haemophilia, red-green colour blindness) that are carried by females and are much more commonly seen males? Wikipedia can elaborate :D

Australia (well, most people I’ve talked to, ever) loves the result, by the way.

          • zeldababygur says:

depends on where you are from.. Miss. does by maternal blood line.. You are what your mother is.. at least the school district does so i would assume the state does the same

          • srsly says:

People of Jewish decent are considered to have their mother’s race/bloodline, but people of the christian faith consider the father to pass on the bloodline. Hence the confusion of children of a Jewish mother and christian father. Both? Win!

      • Deanna says:

Generally, in the US if you’re half white and half minority you’re identified with the minority, regardless of whether it was your mom or your dad who was the minority. Not saying that’s right, just saying that’s the way it is.

        • froofrou says:

That depends on where you live. Around here it’s the dad’s race, and is how they identify you on your birth certificate and DL all over the country.

          • Jessi says:

Just asking ’cause I’m interested, but where’s “here”? I’m from TX and my mom’s half Irish/half Korean and my dad is German. I’m supposed to list myself as Korean (or, you know, ‘Asian/Pacific Islander’) because that’s the minority that I am. It’s on my birth certificate and all that jazz.

            • froofrou says:

Texas as well. I guess maybe it’s different in different parts of the state? That’s just what I was told. I’m an Anglo mutt with pasty white skin, and so is my daughter, so the interracial thing never came up with us :-)

              • Confoozled says:

why the heck does anyone have to identify their race anyway? I’m white, so I’ve never really thought about it, but da-yam that seems so 19th century.

                • jazzmoth says:

Srsly. For instance, my great^x grandfather was Mongolian, otherwise I’m entirely white (Eastern European ancestry). Does that make me asian? No, I’m me, and I’m American, and that’s really the only race I identify with (ie: the melting-pot race).

                  • Jessi says:

Hey, identifying myself as a Korean-American woman helped me when it came to getting money for college and I’m poor, so every little bit helps. Plus, people just like to lump people into categories. If it isn’t by raqce, it’ll be by something else – that’s just the way it is.

Personally, I don’t think you should be able to claim a certain nationality for as long as this county allows it (according to the current laws, my grandchildren will still be able to call themselves Korean even no further Korean blood is introduced), but as long as you can point to one person from your own personal bloodline who was alive at the same time as yourself and who is 100% of whatever it is you are trying to claim – I have no problem with people calling themselves whatever minority they want.

It might sound close-minded and stereotypical ‘Southern’, but, for the most part, I think the only reason people struggle so hard to get claimed as a minority is to get some sort of monetary reward out of it. I mean, like I said before, I cashed in on my Korean blood…

                    K, wow… *totally* didn’t mean to type that much…

                    • viking gal says:

My mother’s generation, it was all about ‘what country are your people from?’ Irish were thought to have this personality trait, Germans have that one, etc… Humans do seem to like their categories, don’t they?

        • zeldababygur says:

that’s true too, my children can attest to that.

        • Tessie says:

I remember reading that in Mexico, driver’s licenses used to have designations for white (i.e., Anglo), black, Hispanic, and Indian. Then they had to change it because they were getting applicants who were black and white, Anglo and Hispanic, etc. etc. Eventually they had so many categories (black and white but not Hispanic, black and Hispanic but not Indian), etc. that it was like the menu in the Spam sketch, and they finally said the hell with it and eliminated the category altogether.

      • jen0cide says:

        How about PERSON.

If you’re a person, you’re a person. Who gives a rats ass about the rest

      • I’ve always been taught that you go with the opinion of the person in question. I’m 1/4 Swedish, 1/4 Russian (pre-1917), 1/4 German, 1/16 French, 1/8 Irish, and 1/16 Dutch.

When someone asks, I just say “white,” but “ruddy Translucent-American” would be more accurate. ;)

      • PortlandMark says:

I think it’s determined by whether or not you have a hard time getting a cab in the city. It comes from the (abominable, shameful) belief that “White” is pure, normal, and average, and any deviation from it is tainted

We can all hope, I think, that Obama’s daughters will never know what that’s like.

      • Dana says:

That’s not how it works. If one of your parents is identifiably black, that makes you black. Some people even still “honor” (if you can call it that) the “one-drop rule.”

Same thing for Native Americans. Americans in general are weird about race.

      • pdq says:

THAT is entirely artificial – NOT any sort of rational application. Why is a child of a white woman and a black man more black than white? If you didn’t know who the hell is parents were, what then? Please; my family in Ireland has many mixed elements, some Polish, some black, and now my neice is dating a young man of Indian birth and how the hell are you going to label THAT??? They just all call themselves Irish.

  13. the tooth says:

    He’s black Irish

  14. oranegreen says:

Wow. Racism triumphs again. I can’t believe in some states 100% of the black vote was for Obama.

    • Phaelin says:

You were surprised? That’s just how it rolls.

      • oranegreen says:

Voting for Obama just because he’s black is just as racist as voting for McCain just because he’s white. I just pray that we get lucky and he was the right choice. But in my humble opinion, the way the poll booths kept breaking down today and how many people were forced into using paper and emergency ballots, I wouldn’t be surprised AT ALL if those numbers for both is votes and McCain’s are incorrect.

        • oranegreen says:

oops ignore this, somehow punditkitchen died and posted this comment twice.

        • PortlandMark says:

I think that voting for someone who understands your struggle is intelligent and reasonable. Hard to see why a rich white guy would understand, or care, about the problems blacks have in our nation. None of them have shown that capacity to date, so blacks voting for a black man is just plain good sense. I’d say the same if it was President Powell.

        • Ceefax says:

“Voting for Obama just because heโ€™s black is just as racist as voting for McCain just because heโ€™s white.”

Which is undoubtedly what some people did. Just like Bush wouldn’t have been able to win without white born again Christians voting for him because he was a white born again Christian.

        • lowly grunt says:

61% of Obama’s support came from white people.

          23% = black

          11% = Hispanic

          according to ABC News

    • Maxwell Silverhammer says:

Yeah its racism, has nothing to do with a majority of Americans actually agree with Obama more than McCain. No nevermind a clean fair almost DOUBLE electoral vote win. Its all about race. Because the republicans are never given a fair chance to show they’re better for the job. *sigh*

      • oranegreen says:

This is a sad day for America. Not because Obama won, but because he won mostly because he was black. I wasn’t aware that the color of a person’s skin meant they were the better man.

        • Maxwell Silverhammer says:

Obviously to you.. your vote was decided when someone mentioned his race.
Others of us, not so close minded.

          • oranegreen says:

I voted based on their policies, the color of their skin matters zilch to me. Same goes with gender. We’ve had all white men as president up until now, and they’ve been equally good and equally bad, so obviously color doesn’t matter now does it?

            • miss_scissors says:

              Win.

            • Maxwell Silverhammer says:

Thats what Ive been saying, but by your comments you truly believe that race is
the deciding factor. You cant say “Well everyone else chose him by race
otherwise they would have voted my way.” and then turn around and claim
that race has no bearing. It may have to some, but to say he won just because
of his race is bigotry, whether you’re racist or not. If it was a matter of racism
Obama would have been ahead and stayed ahead and never faltered. But it
went back and forth for a good time period. Obama won on the issues, the
polls and the electoral vote show that. Plain and simple.

              • oranegreen says:

race has no bearing to me, but I cannot say the same for everyone unfortunately.

                • Maxwell Silverhammer says:

Then logically you cant say sh*t about why Obama was elected. Good
                  Day sir!

                  • oranegreen says:

I don’t understand your point. It’s not the race of a winning/losing candidate that pisses me off, it’s racism.

                    • minerva146 says:

                      You said:

“because he won mostly because he was black. I wasnโ€™t aware that the color of a personโ€™s skin meant they were the better man.”

                      And:

“Weโ€™ve had all white men as president up until now, and theyโ€™ve been equally good and equally bad, so obviously color doesnโ€™t matter now does it?”

This is contradictory; that is his point. Either race was the deciding factor or not, it can’t be both. I agree with Max. He won by a much bigger margin than could be accounted by just blacks voting for him.

                      • oranegreen says:

I was showing that a person can be a good candidate or a bad candidate regardless of color. You can be white and vote for Obama just because he’s black. The news just mentioned NOTHING, absolutely nothing on any of my local channels about the ‘white vote’. They concentrated on the ‘minorities’ especially the black individuals. You can be a black president and be absolutely amazing, or you can absolutely suck. How the nation does has nothing to do with the person-in-power’s skin color.

                        • Jessi says:

Where do you live? I only ask because my local channels spoke a*lot* about the ‘white’ vote and how much of it Obama was stealing from McCain. I live in Houston, by the way.

                        • oranegreen says:

New York City. our news stations are OFTEN biased but ABC 7 is supposed to be the most centered it really wasn’t. Here they kept harping about the ‘minorities’ and the ‘minority vote’. It was quite annoying, I want the whole story.

                        • minerva146 says:

Sure you can be white and vote for that reason. I was only saying it’s likely not the ONLY reason for many. Maybe note even a reason at all for many more. The news coverage may be flawed, but don’t read so much into it. It’s a historic moment.

                    • PiMan says:

Reread what Maxwell said in his larger post. If he won because of racism then his polling would have been more consistant.

                  • herb says:

*buys a shot for Max Silver~*

                • Seth says:

Minorities voted for Obama because he understands their struggle, not because of the color of his skin. But if you need to believe it was race that won this race in order to sleep at night, you go right ahead.

                • wundawomun says:

                  OH GOOD GRIEF!!!

          • Kismet says:

So true… He could’ve been purple, and my undying devotion would still belong to him. I am in awe at his amazing spirit. And I will never see America the same again. We got a REAL PERSON in office! A REAL PERSON! ::happy sighs::

        • You keep on telling yourself that. The way Obama comported himself throughout this campaign, his poise and command of the issues were what wowed most people. McCain has had the decency to congratulate Obama and stress that he is a good man. It’s come to the stage that a black man can be elected President of the USA, but unfortunately some people can’t accept that those who voted for him made a value judgement and gave him their vote because they trust him and believe in him.

          • oranegreen says:

You’re going to tell me that in some states the fact that they had a 100% black vote for Obama is because of his promises? Bullshit.

            • minerva146 says:

You are making a bigoted statement. Do you know for a fact there are some districts that went for Obama with 100% of the black vote in that district? If so, are you then assuming that all these black people are uneducated as to the issues and could not make the choice based on anything other than race? It’s liek they mistakenly thought before about Hillary supporters taking up Palin just because she became the only female on the ticket. Women didn’t vote for that ticket because they didn’t like the policies. It’s quite likely that although SOE blacks did select Obama based on his race, many chose him for his policies, or in the very least because they wanted to vote against McCain/Palin. You are way overgeneralizing, and it’s coming across as racist.

              • oranegreen says:

Yes, because ABC 7 news kept mentioning it OVER AND OVER. I’m not pulling this information out of thin air. FOX 5 kept saying the same thing OVER AND OVER. Didn’t anyone watch the full coverage besides me?

                • minerva146 says:

Just because some news coverage may be flawed, does not mean they are all saying black people ONLY voted because he’s black. The news doen’t represent the people very much anyway.

                  • froofrou says:

I just checked CNN, and they said that roughly 97% black went for Obama. I checked in on my phone, so I can’t give you the actual cite, cuz I dont’ know what it is :-)

                    • minerva146 says:

Yes, but that does not mean that they all voted for him because o race. That’s saying they are all uneducated rubes. Sure there were some, but we’ve also been over the fact that there were also some that voted against for race reasons.

                    • herb says:

… versus looking at the other stats, like how this 97% falls in socio-economic classes and how much that had to do with anything?

That’s why I hate these sort of demographic polls: if 80% of Jews voted for Congressperson Herb, di I get there votes because the voters were Jewish, or because they agreed with my policies?

                      • froofrou says:

Just doing my job as Devil’s Advocate. I don’t have to back it up, mwahaha ;-)
                        -
I really don’t know about how the stats break down. I didn’t look that far into it because I’m at work and can’t. And you’re right, it DOESN’T mean they all voted for him because of his race. In my small data pool in my immediate area, though, all of the minorities around me (at work) freely admit to voting for him for racial reasons. It’s a little disheartening. But, it is a small group of people and by no means should be viewed as a whole.

                    • Ceefax says:

The black population in the United States has always leaned Democrat anyway though. In some states the ONLY demographic which had a majority voting for McCain was white men. Were they all voting for him just because he was white?

            • LifeAndCausality says:

And your psychic powers tell you this? We have a secret ballot in this country, if you recall. There’s no way anyone could tell if 100% of any group voted for any candidate. You are just making stuff up and claiming it’s true, which is exactly the kind of crap that cost you the election.

          • DD says:

If McCain had comported himself throughout the campaign with the same class he showed in his concession speech, my choice might have been more difficult. However…
And, personally, I wouldn’t care if Obama was purple with orange spots, he impresses me as an educated, intelligent man who understands the personal power that self control imparts.
            Yea Obama and yea us.

            • Confoozled says:

hear, hear about McCain’s speech. That was the man I was interested in 4 years ago. And then he went and saddled himself with Palin. I do feel sorry for him; he is a good man. I think he let himself be taken over too much by his party.

        • n8 says:

That’s such a load of crap. He won because his ideas were better, and because he is the more talented and inspiring leader. Cling bitterly to your racism if it helps you sleep at night, but it marks you as a troglodyte.

          • oranegreen says:

I’m sorry but I’m not racist. I could care less if Obama was purple with pink polkadots. Color doesn’t matter when it comes to the value of a human’s ideas. Regardless of the color of our skin we are still equal. We’re all made of the same things. Our only difference is our gender organs, but they’re for the same purpose.

            • Seth says:

See, the thing is, you can’t bring yourself to admit that Obama had better ideas that resonated with the country. It’s much easier for you to believe that Obama won because of race than it is to admit that the country just resoundingly spanked the Republican party because of their failures. Look at how many House and Senate seats the Democrats picked up. Were they all because of race, too? Sorry, race had little to do with this race. Face it, the country has moved back to the left again, Middle America has embraced the Democratic party and rejected the Republican party. That is the fact you are hiding from with your whining about race.

        • Deanna says:

I would argue that he won DESPITE the color of his skin, if anything. It was a handicap for JFK that he was a Catholic in 1960, and he overcame that. I don’t think the majority of the electorate voted for JFK BECAUSE he was a Catholic back then; they voted for him in spite of it or because they thought it didn’t matter. With the history that America has in relation to blacks, I find it ridiculous for someone to argue that Obama had an advantage because he’s black.

          • oranegreen says:

Well, the fact that in some states the black vote was 100% for Obama, I think that speaks pretty loud for itself. I highly doubt that in any election anyone EVER got 100% of any nationality vote in any state.

Up until now I think the whites carried the white vote…. ;-)
Ok now Im just being trollish. But if you cant admit to yourself that a whole
people think differently then you… so be it.

              • oranegreen says:

Well, being a troll drives out the true character of the person you’re trolling right? I just don’t like that people do vote that way, regardless of who’s running. I just have no other campaign to compare it to because this is a first. It’s just fishy the way some of the nationality votes turned out.

                • herb says:

“Itโ€™s just fishy the way some of the nationality votes turned out.”

100% of Americans voted for either Obama, McCain, or a lesser party candidate. I don’t get your comment. Unless you meant fishy because some predominantly-white counties voted for McCain, or some such nonsense.

The people voted for the candidates they thought best, and for now the better man won out.

                  • oranegreen says:

I meant the nationalities like the hispanics, asians and blacks the whole media kept harping on, not the whole nation of America.

                    • herb says:

Those are racial categories, not national.

I’ll concede as much as the asininity of the press reporting the “black vote”as a particular block, but then these are the people that lump most people into category of some sort.

My guess: 65-70% of the “black vote” was because the people backed his socio-political ideas.

                    • Werrf says:

Those are not nationalities. They’re ethnicities.

No doubt there were plenty of people who voted for Obama because of his rae. No doubt there were plenty of people who voted for McCain because of *his* race.

No doubt both groups were wrong. And no doubt there was a huge honkin’ bunch of people who voted for Obama because he had inspired them and won their loyalty. Quit trying to cheapen this.

          • PortlandMark says:

I love how oranegreen is making out that being an African-American is now the secret key to becoming president. Like every president we’ll have from now on will be black, because it’s sooo advantageous.

        • gnn1 says:

Exit polls state that age was a bigger factor than race in the overall election. Which tbh I believe. McCains age has been a huge issue for me

SUrely you did not just say that it is a sad day in AMerica when AMerica voted for the better man. Tell me you are not so jaded.

      • Claire says:

Its not because they agree with him. Did you not see the news segment where crews went out and asked Black Obama supporters if they were voting for Obama because he was “For the war in Iraq or because he is Pro-Life” and NOT ONE OF THEM corrected the news crew. So many people dont KNOW WHAT THEY ARE VOTING FOR! THEY ARE UNINFORMED! THEY VOTED BASED ON THE COLOR OF HIS SKIN! People are going out there doing more harm than good by voting completely blind. Its sad. Personally, I think they are both complete crap but if you’re going to vote do some goddamned research on your candidate first. christ.

        • oranegreen says:

I’m pretty sure if they reversed it and asked McCain supporters as well, the same thing would happen. I wonder how many people actually corrected the news crew, they do edit those segments. The sad thing was though when they asked about how they felt if Sarah Palin became vice president. If you were REALLY voting for Obama you’d know who his running mate is.

        • wwjd says:

It’s unfortunate that some people voted for him because of his skin color, not in a racial way, but rather, in order to have made history. He won because he DOES represent a majority of this country, LIBERAL.

          • lowly grunt says:

He is the most Republican liberal I’ve heard since – well, talking to my husband. ;-)

Seriously, listen hard to his speech in Chicago last night; that was not the speech of a socialist, a liberal or a hard core conservative.

That was the sort of speech I heard from my Republican parents while I was growing up. My mom used to tell me that because I live in America, I could be anything I chose to be. I just had to figure out what that was! Still working on it….

        • CandyStripeLegs says:

Stupidity is color blind, you hear such stupid things in every election. When we had our election people voted Harper saying he was against the copyright bill, when infact he supports it.

    • zeldababygur says:

why are you surprised.. the black vote is allegedly only 12% of the population..why wouldnt they vote for someone who looks like them… its a first sweetie.. and that isn’t so much about race but look at how far we have come..from slaves to president…

      • oranegreen says:

It’s a history making event I’m proud to have been a part of, even if the person I voted for didn’t win. It was my first time voting as well.

    • NealTheBananaPeel says:

Yeah, Obama won because all the blacks are voting for him. I mean… Obama took Maine and it is 96% white. There is no way that its because most people think he’s the best candidate.

      • oranegreen says:

        Good point.

      • Silverfish says:

Orane, I thought the point you were making was…oh nevermind…

*sigh* I hate them both. Has anyone even HEARD of George Phillies?

        • oranegreen says:

I can’t admit that someone made a good point against mine? Their good point doesn’t change my opinion much though. A lot of the ‘minority’ votes the news kept HARPING on about looked suspiciously like racism for Obama.

          • Lee says:

So all those votes that were cast for racist reasons are somehow not as good as votes cast for the honourable reasons of, for example, supporting a candidate’s economic policies?

            WTF?

Some people liked Obama/McCain’s economic policies, and voted accordingly. Other people thought the colour of Obama/McCain’s skin was more important for them, and voted accordingly.

Every American got one vote to use. Everyone cast their vote the way they wanted to*. No votes are ’suspicious’ because of the reasons for casting them. You may find the opinions of other Americans not to your liking, but people have a right to use their vote the way they want.

            Deal with it.

            *Insert obligatory Florida joke here.

    • Jennifer says:

most of those that voted for him probably had no idea what in the hell was really going on. they probably just voted for him because he was black or half black or whatever you want to call him. that makes me sad because race should not be the issue. god help us all

      • NealTheBananaPeel says:

That’s the way it goes for most people these days. It’s whoever “seems” best. It is the reason why they skirt around the issues. “Obama is part muslim, he’s going to turn us over to the terrorists,” “McCain voted with Bush 90%, he’s going to be another Bush.” People should be looking at the real issues like who is going to help out the middle and lower classes.

      • oranegreen says:

Thankfully the president doesn’t have as much power as people think he does. It’s all in the congress. Yeah he can veto a law, but that can be overturned too.

      • Dana says:

And yet race has been the issue in every single other race. Otherwise we’d have had a mix of races making it to the major nominations all along.

If you vote white, you’re voting race, because white is not “default.” If you think it is, you’re racist.

By the way, I’m white too.

      • hergieburbur says:

Thats not what spread the wealth is. If you stop and think (tough concept for many), ALL taxes are spreading the wealth. Also if you think about it, those people being “punished” for being wealthy mostly got that way with the assistance of lower class working people. His concepts are merely about taking care of those people, rather than hoarding it among the few.

        • Claire says:

His plan fails though He says he’s going to reduce taxes on the poor by increasing taxation on business. Suddenly businesses cant afford to hire more workers and the poor minimum wage crowd cant find jobs and then they’re unemployed and on welfare. He’s a fucking idiot. They both are. Not that it even matters because no pres does what he says he’s going to do anyway.

          • Werrf says:

As opposed to the much better McCain plan of reducing taxes on businesses by cutting essential services. Suddenly customers can’t afford to patronise businesses, businesses can’t afford to hire more workers…

          • hergieburbur says:

Conservatives have been spouting that same philosophy for years. How has that theory been working?

Ooops, hehe. Take it from a socialist, our new President Elect is a fiscally conservative centrist along the lines of Clinton and Reagan.

        • Silverfish says:

Spread the Wealth is a socialist idea and I disagree with that. Fortunately despite the socialist spin, the wealth will be spread primarily to the Fed, and they are always so good at handling our money…oh wait.

      Thankyew.

      First time I’ve voted for a winner since… *calculates* Ever, I think… I can’t remember if I voted for Clinton…

  27. JanScholl says:

This man is elected not because of his skin color but because he is the better person for the long and hard job ahead. I wish there was no thing as skin color because that is all the tv and newspeople are pointing out about Obama. Would we say a white McCain had he won? No. so lets start by saying our next and newest president not our black president.

    • Phaelin says:

Yeah, he wasn’t voted because of his skin color. That’s why all these Twitterers and Facebookers are saying “FSK YEAH! FIRST BLACK PRESIDENT!”… I’m sure they didn’t vote just because of skin color. Sure.
(Not to say all did, by no means. I’m just kinda of certain that was a lot of it.)

      • miss_scissors says:

That doesn’t mean he was voted for because of his skin colour. It just means wow, he’s the first black president. It’s a long way to come from when blacks weren’t even considered citizens in America, and were only property. Now we have a black President Elect, and I think that’s pretty cool.

      • I’m sure a lot of people voted for Obama because he’s black. I’m equally sure a lot of people voted for McCain because he’s white. Is it right? No. Not on either side. But I think it’s a shame that Obama’s having to deal with people trying to make less of his achievement (becoming President [-Elect]). Some people voted based on some horribly fatuous reasons. Most didn’t.

      • Tessie says:

Conversely, there were probably a fair number of people who voted *against* Obama because they would never vote for a black guy. I don’t agree with that, either, but they didn’t ask my permission, so whattya gonna do?

      • Lola says:

Have you ever been to the Northeast? You know, where all those cold white people live? He didn’t win the northeast by being black, he won it by being the better man.

        • Phaelin says:

Not to egg on the argument, but the Northeast is traditionally liberal anyway. Like I said, I’m not saying that’s why he won (which so many people shoved into my mouth it seems for saying something slightly negative about the victory) by any means, so get a grip.

          • Phaelin says:

And, for the record, this comment applies to everyone that decided to take my comment as “lol he only won because of race”. I put a little more thought into my beliefs than that, thank you very much.

      • Seth says:

No, it was the economy. Republican policies screwed the pooch. America is done with greed and selfishness. You keep telling yourself it was just race though. It wasn’t the Republican ideology, that’s why you guys picked up so many house and senate seats, oh, wait…

      • miss_scissors says:

That’s what my Health/Constitution teacher always said- that the way our country was going, we’d probably be in civil war in the future. This was before Obama was President Elect.

      • Silverfish says:

Nah, I doubt a civil war. We are too disorganized. Maybe some hellish riots, but then They would give us cheeseburgers to settle us down. ^_^

I voted for him because of issues. Maybe if I was black, I’d have fogotten all I know about the issues and just voted because of race. C’mon, get real. Sure there are a few voting for that reason, just as there were some voting against him, also because of race. That doesn’t mean race was THE deciding factor. The margins don’t account for that. In the district I am most aware of, the vote was like 60/40 and not everybody was black.

    • Seth says:

Keep telling yourself that. This WAS a vote on issues. This was a vote on the economy, and the war. This wasn’t about race, this was about America thoroughly and completely rejecting Republican ideology. Otherwise, how do you explain the huge house and senate gains? You WISH this was about race, you can’t stand the fact that America has rejected your ideology, so you pretend it’s about race.

  39. miss_scissors says:

I’m extremely excited about this. All school year, I’ve had to listen to my Biologist/Maths teacher berate Obama, calling him an ignorant foreigner, bashing him about his apparent Muslim faith (even after it had been denied), and basically slandering his image while I had to listen without saying anything because she’s my teacher. I’m glad I was home sick from school today so I didn’t have to listen to her, and I’m afraid I won’t be able to go into her classroom without a huge smile on my face tomorrow morning. :D
    Yay Obama!

    • oranegreen says:

Ok, how can Obama be a foreigner if he’s running for president? You HAVE to be an American citizen born on American soil to run for president. I cannot stand people who talk down others so ignorantly, especially someone who’s supposed to be an educated teacher.

      • miss_scissors says:

It was always extremely uncomfortable being in that class when she discussed politics. She’s obviously very biased. She was talking about the foreigner thing during the brief ’scandal’ about his supposedly forged birth certificate.

        • oranegreen says:

Why is a biology/math teacher discussing politics in class anyway? O_o
The most political my bio class got was when we filled out a questionaire about how we felt about learning about the theory evolution.

          • miss_scissors says:

i don’t know why. she just starts on it right before the bells rings, so you’re kind of trapped in the conversation until the releases you from class. It’s rather irritating.

            • oranegreen says:

Well as long as it’s not cutting into the majority of your class-time…XD My chem teacher likes to bullshit a lot about her getting married and stuff, but nothing about politics. She only bullshits though when we have extra time in class. Teachers in my college aren’t allowed to let the students leave early or they’ll get fired for whatever reason.

            • Confoozled says:

you need to talk to an administrator about her–maybe not for your sake, but for other & future students who may feel pressured by her. She’s in a good position to brainwash a lot of people, and that is not only unprofessional, but also unethical.
              .
Talking about politics is ok, if she’s super-careful to be nothing but factual & balanced–or hopelessly vague. :)
              .
(from a biased former teacher who’s more interested in teaching kids to think for themselves.)

      • badinerie says:

Speaking as a future teacher, that kind of behavior in the classroom is highly unprofessional. If I were you I would complain to the principal about how uncomfortable her outspoken opinions make you.

        • It’s the same way at my high school. Just today my advisory teacher went on a tangent about how horrible America was, at the same time telling me things that weren’t true. Please try to get unbiased teachers back in the classroom. We most certainly don’t need educational staff influencing the political mindset of American youth in the classroom.

        • badinerie says:

Wonderful! Somehow my comment got put in completely the wrong place. I meant to reply to the student who was complaining about the inappropriately politics-spouting teacher.

    • Me says:

Wow, you’re a pussy. I had a very liberal teacher and we went at it almost everyday. Still passed. Hm, imagine that.

    • Biology and Maths – and she was talking about the election WHY?

    • ElbieSee says:

Your parents are paying taxes for her paycheck. Gloat all you want!

    • Javascap says:

He he he. I remember my CogSci professer being just like your teacher. Unlike you, I stood up and verbally shot my professer out of the sky, and called him out for being a racist and xenophobic creep. It was entirely worth it for the reaction, even though I got an F on my next paper, every time he started on Obama, I just stood up and glared at him, and that was quite enough.

  40. Intelligent Voter says:

Yes, he won by over double the electoral votes, but only by 2.8 million popular (actual) votes. That’s just 52%. Stop dancing already, you’re embarassing yourself.
Also, I’ve come to dislike Biden more than Obama, so when they take out Obama (Oh yes, it will happen. I don’t favor it, but it will happen.), I really don’t want President Biden.
*Sigh*, I just hope that our differences won’t be so radical. I support offshore and Alaskan drilling (no, they don’t drill into the cute lil’ moose’s head first), electric and water vehicles (NOT biodiesel, it’s a big money scam, as is…), NOT global warming, which is a bunch of money-draining lies, Middle Eastern freedom (if we leave, they’ll all go terrorist-government on us), NOT gays (read Leviticus), and pro-middle class.

    • Yeee says:

Being called “the gays” is incorrect and sometimes even offensive… you might want to change that in the future.

    • Dana says:

Gore won the popular vote in 2000. You were saying?

      • froofrou says:

Just that when a Repub does it the same way (or close to the same way) a Dem does it, there isn’t the foot stomping and crying that there was in the past. The Repubs are told to grow up and get over it, while the Dems are shouting for a recount. Hmmmm. Little disconnect there. And they still accuse Bush of stealing TWO elections, when he got more of the popular vote in 2004 than he did in 2000. Yet, there was the sound of Dems everywhere stamping their feetses.

        • minerva146 says:

I haven’t heard Democrats suggesting assassination due to their sour grapes. I know that it isn’t most republicans saying this, but it goes to show that your crazies are a bit more crazy than ours.

      Read Leviticus?

      Have you ever read:
Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion…
(Pretty sure this is still in the Constitution)

So people who don’t believe in the Bible should still be required by law to follow the teachings found within?

I’m Christian, but I don’t understand the intolerance that people who claim to be “Christian” show to other human beings. People are human, and should be treated as such regardless or race, religion, or sexual orientation.

God loves all of his children.

    • alexis says:

Religon has no place in government, Americas supposed to protect the peoples diffrences. When talking about gayness and why you don’t support it the bible is not a good reason because this government was made so that religon would not be so influcential as it is.

  41. Claire says:

I don’t care what anyone says. I think Barack Obama won largely because he is black. Did you not see the news segment where crews went out and asked Black Obama supporters if they were voting for Obama because he was โ€œFor the war in Iraq or because he is Pro-Lifeโ€ and NOT ONE OF THEM corrected the news crew that Obama is neither of those things. They don’t even know what Obama stands for just that he is Black. So many people dont KNOW WHAT THEY ARE VOTING FOR! THEY ARE UNINFORMED! THEY VOTED BASED ON THE COLOR OF HIS SKIN! People are going out there doing more harm than good by voting completely blind. Its sad. Personally, I think they are both complete crap but if youโ€™re going to vote do some goddamned research on your candidate first. christ. I am really hoping he is the right choice. I didn’t like either of the candidates though. McCains about ready to croak and Palin’s an airhead. So either way we’re completely and totally screwed.

    • Leah says:

Okay, so 50% of the nation is black now? Ahem… They are called a MINORITY for a reason. Stop being such a sore loser, Obama for the win!

      • You don’t have to be black to vote for someone based on their skin color.

        • Dana says:

Which is why every President we’ve ever had has been a different shade of human. This isn’t our first black President, they’ve all been multiracial.

      • JLH says:

I’d just like to make a small contribution to this. A lot of *young* *white* voters are also voting because he’s black. It’s historical and new. The young vote has always leaned more left, even if the majority don’t follow politics closely, they just don’t like the old white guy republicans because they’re not popular with the majority of the people they personally look up to, i.e. their friends and celebrities. What made them get out to vote is this historical change.. that a *black* man would be president. I’m around young people a lot where I work, many of them supported Barack, only one, maybe two, actually *followed* the politics of it all.

I do wonder how the results would be if a female or other nationality won. Because Barack didn’t just win because he was black, but he also oozed charisma. Liquid gold practically fell from his mouth.
Also I wonder now that the historical part is over, how many will come *back* to vote in 2012… I’m getting a feeling that a lot will not come back to vote, even if Obama runs again… since the magic is over.

        • Dana says:

Can’t possibly be because people are terrified for the future because the frigging stock market fell out from under us on the old white men’s watch? Or because we went into an illegal war based on lies and have now killed over 4000 Ameircan troops and God knows how many Iraqis? Or because the old white guys only care about old white voters and the rest of us can go hang? Nah, it’s because he’s black. Well, you only think that because you vote for white guys ’cause they’re white.

          • the_original_shortright says:

as one of the young white voters that JLH is talking about…. i can say that no, your reasons, Dana, aren’t the reason why a lot of my age group voted for Obama. the number of people i talked to who were voting for him because “it’s something new”, “we’ve never had a candidate who actually had a chance at winning who was black”, “well the white guys have had their chance, lets try something else”, “i want to be a part of history” or some other sort of comment like that is mind boggling. yet when i asked them WHY they were voting for obama besides the novelty aspect of it i got blank stares or the canned “well mccain is just too old”. they never once brought up the issues or anything that would prove that they actually paid attention to the election and made an informed decision.
            -
i can also tell you that because i AM young and white that i received an endless number of calls from obamas campaign. they came to my house several times and i got mailings from them. in all these calls, house visits and mailings they didn’t highlight his policies – they highlighted “change” and him being black (when in reality he’s only HALF black).
            -
in no way am i saying that all young white voters who voted for obama ONLY voted for the novelty aspect, but out of the close to 100 i talked to, i’d say only 4 or 5 of them had any concept of the issues. and that’s really sad. it’s our civic duty to know who the hell we’re voting for and why we’re voting for them… and in that aspect, a lot of my generation failed miserably.

    • hergieburbur says:

Claire, Claire, Claire, How Naive are you? You can say the same thing about some supporters of EVERY candidate that’s ever run for public office? How many people voted for Bush simply because he was pro-life without knowing/caring about his stance on other issues? The Christian churches elected him last time on the wrong issues, and that turned out to be a total disaster…

      • hergieburbur says:

What I am getting at is not a partisan speech, merely that that behavior is not unique among the sheeple in this country.

        • Seth says:

“Sheeple” is an elitist term, used by people who think they are better than everyone else. When you see someone use the term, ’sheeple,’ run. They are not worth talking to, because they KNOW they are better than you. They KNOW that you can not take care of yourself. They KNOW that you need to be led around like the sheep you are, but THEY want to be the one doing it. They will not listen, they will only berate you for being stupid. Again, when you hear the word ’sheeple,’ run!

          • Philip Shade says:

You ever play that game they had on the Scion website where you massacre sheeple and collect their blood to customize your ride? it was AWEESSOME

there’s a vid at the link on my name

          • PortlandMark says:

Well, I admit it: I’m guilty of using “Sheeple” to describe the followers of the neocon nutjobs that pushed so hard for us to get into Iraq. (I didn’t mind Afghanistan, that was the *right* war)

      • Mac says:

just so you know pro-life and pro-choice are viewpoints on controversial issues, black and white aren’t, but in any case i agree with you voting only on one issue is wrong but i don’t think it is as bad as voting based solely on race

    • PortlandMark says:

When did being black become an asset to being elected to national office?

  42. AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA says:

I am proud once more to be an American.

    • herb says:

So what you’re saying is, up until now you -hated- America and wanted it overrun by Islamofascists?!

(So do I get the job, Mr. Murdoch?)

  43. SmallTownAmerican says:

I am thrilled that this man is now our President-Elect.
    .
He got the vote of this white woman.
    .
But I am SO afraid for him! I don’t want to be negative on this
historic night, but the truth is undeniable. No doubt there are
racists gathering already with evil plans.
    .
Maybe IronMan could loan Barack his suit???

    • miss_scissors says:

That’s my biggest fear. There have already been two thwarted plans, though one was a bunch of racist potheads with an armory in their garage and another was a pair or skinheads who planned on killing 88 black students then driving at Obama with a truck and firing at him as they did, both plans that wouldn’t have gotten very far anyway, I fear for Obama’s safety.

And on the Ironman thing- That would be so awesome

Why does my spellcheck still say Obama is mispelled? Argh!

      • minerva146 says:

This is what the politics of hate and smears gets us! I am sorry if I sound like I’m harping, but this sort of “attack plans” I feel are as a result of the hate filled Rovian tactics that have been used the last few elections. It has done nothing except divide us like has not been seen in a very long time, and whip the crazies up into a homicidal frenzy! Look what you have wrought with this type of tactics! (This is a comment about the crazies, not about Miss Scissors)

        • miss_scissors says:

I agree completely. The thing that bothers me most about politics has always been the hate and that those campaigning spend a majority of their time and campaign money harping on the opponent and saying nasty things about what their opponent has done and will or will not do instead of saying what they themselves will do to fix the problems. It’s frightening, and has bothered me since I was old enough to understand what politics were.

          • minerva146 says:

Yes, there’s always been smearing, but Rove perfected the art. It’s frightfully disgusting. That is what has people ignorantly shouting “terrorist” and “kill him” at rallies, etc. Hopefully we can figure out a way to heal now.

    • oranegreen says:

Well think of it this way: how many people thought Bush was going to be killed? He wasn’t. I’m pretty sure Obama won’t be assassinated, they’ve put up bulletproof glass around his podium tonight though…

      • miss_scissors says:

it would still be cool to give him and ironman suit. might make it tougher to understand what he’s saying, though…

  44. Ian says:

I really wanna see the LOL that would have gone up if, god forbid, McCain won!!

  45. Claire says:

If you think about it though, You’re really really voting for vice pres this race. Because there are radical Obama haters out there who may try to harm him and McCain’s ready to croak. So who would you prefer? Pres Biden or Pres Palin?

  46. fromthesouth says:

    He makes “President” look GOOD…
Hah! Get it? MIB reference! get it?… ahh never mind.
Kudos to the US. Not sure what this will mean for us south of the border, but I’m happy anyway. If Obama is as good as we all hope, we in the rest of the world will miss having Bush to make fun of :P

  47. Jennifer says:

and now we watch the country go to hell…

No, not because he’s black, it has NOTHING to do with that, and that’s one of the problems…so many people voted for him just because he was a black man, it’s like reverse discrimination…a good number of them didn’t take the time to look into just WHO they were actually voting for.

    I fear for this country.

    • areyoukiddingme says:

So that’s what Obama haters are playing now? THE RACE CARD!!! OMFG!!! “He won because he is black, and those who voted for him are a bunch of reversed racists”??? You people MUST be kidding.
Nah, never mind. He won, end of story, suck it up.

    • ElbieSee says:

Thing about playing the race card…

Make sure your opponent doesn’t have a better hand.

    • Cindy says:

Riiiiiigggghhhhttt. And Bill Clinton sealed up his huge percentage of AA votes when he played the sax because it’s a traditional black influenced instrument, not because of his policies.

Blacks always have a huge percentage going to Democrats. Obama may have increased this percentage, but he ALSO did that among whites, and hispanics, etc…

    • Leah says:

He won because everyone is sick of all the crap that the Bush gave out. How BUSH single handedly chewed up out nations and digested it to a piece of crap. Obama is the man to right our country.

    • Tessie says:

“so many people voted for him just because he was a black man, itโ€™s like reverse discriminationโ€ฆa good number of them didnโ€™t take the time to look into just WHO they were actually voting for.”

Either you’re a mind reader, or you’re making some awfully unfounded assumptions here.

  48. n8 says:

This has been an amazing, wonderful, historic night. It ends now for me, as it’s nearly 12:30 on the East coast. Party on, my Democratic friends, the future begins tomorrow. For the conservatives, be of good cheer. Everything that’s happening now is for the best. For the throwback racists, well, your time is ended. Evolve, or fall by the wayside.

    Goodnight, all!

  49. metreoncascade says:

    ^_^; Epic win.

  50. Helina says:

Want to know what is really cool? I turned eighteen three days ago. This was my first time voting, and it was a landmark in the nation’s history.

Im so happy to have been a part of this.

  51. Mac says:

all the American lemmings must die…

    • Mac says:

just to be clear i hate both sides of the spectrum this election has thoroughly managed to disgust me. McCain selling his soul to the religious right and Obama playing the race card.

On a side note… i wonder how long it is going to take Obama to be added to spell check…

      • PiMan says:

        Just add it yourself.

      • Dana says:

It’s amazing to me that no white guy who runs is ever accused of playing the race or gender cards. Is whiteness not a race? Is male not a gender? The very notions (usually unarticulated) that “white” and “male” are the default conditions of the human species are racist and sexist to their rotten cores.

If you don’t like race being discussed, quit trying so damn hard to keep it an issue. Ditto for gender. Quit shitting on people of color, and women of any race, and grow the hell up. Then you won’t have to wonder anymore whether anybody is qualified for anything.

Obama has far more experience in government than Shrub did, who was only governor of Texas, which is a bully pulpit position under the Texas constitution, with barely any legal power. The lieutenant governor has more power. If we’re going on qualifications here, Bush had no business in office at all.

        • Mac says:

Wow you are a narrow minded twat. I’m criticizing the people that voted on both sides who don’t know what the hell they are talking about. I have no doubt in my mind that Obama is going to do what he thinks is right for the country and i truly hope his idea work. Every time i try to criticize both sides on this site i automatically get labeled as a republican when i am morally a democrat but economically a republican for a free market aka I’m a libertarian. Stop assuming because i don’t agree with you i am for the other guy. Believe it or not there is more than two political parties. I’m not shitting on people of color i’m shitting on ignorant people on both sides who don’t vote on issues. I would have posted this comment no matter if Obama won or not it just so happens that he won so everyone automatically assumes i am shitting on him. I can tell you had McCain won i most certainly would have had a different reaction from the left side for my disgust in our two party system.

  52. Livo says:

speaking as someone not from america, i’ve never seen an american process be this important, this talked about, or this…amazing. i live in ireland and most people i know made some effort to stay up and watch the results. there have been debates and discussions and meetings about it even though the vast majority of people in attendance didn’t have a vote. congratulations america for making history, and voting the first president to ever be…well, he’s just COOL!

  53. Ana Pires says:

Oh America. I’m so happy for you. :)

  54. Spreadthewub says:

so.. Comrade Obama has made it to the white-house -.- Oh well, hopefully he won’t mess up our country too much, only so much damage can be done in four years.

  55. Lolnathan says:

A sad night for 48% of America, a happy night for 51%, another election where we were forced to choose between two flawed ideologies or not choose at all.

  56. IDK!!!! says:

    YES WE CAN!!!!!

  57. Leah Mitchell says:

I have never cried tears of joy for a president, I am proud of you America! So proud, and for once in 8 years, hopeful.

  58. Barak Osama says:

Canada seems like a nice place right around now. At least they don’t have a president who’s going to tax the hell out of people in a depression. Plus I’m sure their PM is more respectful towards life, but I wouldn’t know for sure.

What I don’t understand is the American mind. Right now we have a Democratic House, and a split Senate. We all know where this has gotten us in the past few years. Now America decides to vote in more Democrats into the House and shift the Senate in Democratic favor as well. Why on God’s green earth would this seem like a logical way of getting out of this mess? Plus, elect a Democratic president and now Congress will have an almost free reign with a country they’ve already driven into the ground (I say almost because they were prevented from having automatic filibuster privilages- thank God).

    • Leah says:

if you make over $250,000 you can afford to be taxed. Listen to his plans and then think about your verbal diarrhea before you spit it out..

      • minerva146 says:

Clearly this is a troll, based on the name. I’m don’t even want to begin to give the details yet again, about how the deregulation that started this mess started way back under Reagan and was given further catalyst under the first Bush W term. Research on the state of the union 2001 yields info on expanding home loans being a good idea under bush. The last 18months had little to do with the crises that have beset us. These things just can’t happen overnight. It should be a no-brainer.

      • Barak Osama says:

Most small business take in that much or more. The increase for a company making 250,000 would be 7,500 a year. For a struggling company that could very well be just what puts them out of business. You still agree that he is going to raise taxes on some portion of the population and his friends in Congress will have no problem with passing that kind of bill. They’ll probably use the extra tax money to send AIG on another comfy retreat. We all know where Democratic spending leads us (if not, you’ve been living under a rock), so I’m still amazed at how many Americans seem to agree with them.

        • minerva146 says:

(5 percent of small businesses DO NOT make that kind of money. Hence they are called “small” usiness. You get to be that size, you aren’t really small anymore. that is a fallacy.

        • PortlandMark says:

They take in that much, sure, but very very few make that much in profit, which is what you are taxed on.

        • Dana says:

Democratic spending??? Under Clinton, we wound up with a budgetary SURPLUS. Under Bush… God, don’t get me started, I’m old enough to remember Reagan. I’d love to know what these “most small business(es)” are that make over $250k a year; in any case, if you can’t run a tight ship then you deserve to go under. We’re in trouble precisely because so many mismanaged businesses have been allowed to survive and drag America down with them.

You want to live in a free, First World country with a high standard of living? Foot the damn bill. You benefit from your own taxes anyway, just like any other citizen does. Better “tax and spend” than “borrow and spend.” At least when it’s taxes it’s Americans paying most of it, rather than issuing more bonds for the Chinese to buy and put us into even more debt slavery to them. YOU SUPPORT THAT SHIT. Are you proud of yourself?

      • blah says:

It’s very dangerous to assume that if someone makes a certain amount of money “they can afford” higher taxes. Without considering their situation and their outflow of money you simply can’t decide that. There are families with 7 or more kids. There are people with special needs and ailments. Their family may have 250k+ coming in, but if they’re spending that much or more just surviving and making ends meet, they’re just as poor as the person making minimum wage at McDonalds or wherever. And if the person making minimum wage lives with their parents or doesn’t have rent/bills/etc for one reason or another, they may actually be far better off than the family making 250k+. It’s class envy and it’s just as bad as, say, statistics taken out of context.
        .
Just wanted to make that point. I haven’t read the thread really so any other points out there I’m not commenting on. Just was scrolling down and the “afford to be taxed” caught my eye.

        • Dana says:

You get deductions per person in your household. Where do you come up with this crap?

          • blah says:

You don’t get deductions per ailment. Get the stick out of your butt and try thinking sometime. Just because a person has a high income doesn’t mean their money out isn’t also high.

            • blah says:

And if you honestly believe the amount of deduction you get for a child adequately covers the cost of having said child, you must be single.

              • Phalange says:

Maybe you shouldn’t have 7 friggin kids until you can afford to take care of all of them????? There are these magical things these days called “condoms” and “vasectomies” that do wonders for reducing the amount of children you create.

                • blah says:

Playing Monday Morning Quarterback doesn’t help people with children already. And I’m not saying I’m one of them. I’m just saying the situation exists and it’s stupid to pretend it doesn’t.

        • Ernesto says:

you know they’ve been taxing people for years in other countries they’ve got these things called “allowances” for how many kids you have, if you suffer from long term illness and so on.

The argument gets silly if you start trying to contend that someone earning $4 million a year needs less tax. When it gets to the point that your income could easily half and not effect your standard of living then really you can afford to pay more tax.
And tax is not a bad thing, you get it back with like cops and education and roads and defense and being able to take your kid to the hospital without having to worry if your bullshit insurance company has F8cked you over in the small print.

      • Spreadthewub says:

Maybe you didn’t notice him slipping the bar from 250k to 120k in the last few days.

    • Kismet says:

Aww…. Somebody doesn’t feel the magic… I hope you feel it soon ^_^

    • Yeee says:

I view things on an Eastern view of cyclical rise and fall. To cut it short – it’s the Democrat’s time to get their agenda and plans passed and in action, as well as for them to mess up and do unpopular things as each party inevitably does.
While I prefer a more bi-partisan body, I personally just think it’s making up for the past 8 years :)

    • x-bert says:

Correction, ass – the Dems now hold the Presidency, and a majority in both Senate and the House. Buckle up and shut up – or organize in some intelligent, peaceful, and legitimate fashion to bring about the changes you and others who agree with you see fit.

      Thanks

Ride that waaaahmbulance all the way to Alaska, troll.

  59. Paul says:

This election was a joke. It showed total bias on the part of the American People.

    • Ugh. I agree with you partly, there.

I mean, he won fair-and-square (as far as we know), but I mean you can’t make an honest decision for who you want for President if you don’t know anything about the candidate you’re voting for.

      • minerva146 says:

Bias on the part of the American people? Isn’t that the point of having an election? to find out what the people’s bias is? Maybe Paul, you’re against having elections?

        • x-bert says:

          *sigh*
Let him wallow in his fail of a comment until he gets it.
          .
.. Perhaps he’d prefer if some water tart laying about in a pool distributing swords chose the fate of our nation…..

        • Mac says:

he is referring to the fact that a large portion of the American population on both sides were not educated to the extent to be allowed to vote. quite frankly the fact that anyone can fill out a voter registration and go vote on decisions that affect me and is required to have no knowledge of the issues at hand is allowed to vote simply blows my mind.

          • minerva146 says:

Yes, we strive for an informed electorate. This year, I think many more people were informed than we had in past years. More were paying attention, which is why we got such high voter turnouts. Maybe it’s for good or ill, but testing people about awareness before being allowed to vote would be like censorship and would mean that elections weren’t truly democratic. I’m sure other countries have their informed vs. only slightly aware voters as well. You take the good with the bad in the name of democracy. I think though, as I said, more people WERE paying attention.

            • Mac says:

Sorry Minerva i just simply can’t agree with you this time. I really don’t think some people should be allowed to vote. You can call me unamerican or whatever you like. All i know is one person who votes and does not understand both sides is one too many in a democracy. BTW thanks for responding i always find your comments interesting.

              • herb says:

I’ve always liked the idea of a competency test for registration, but to make voting required (maybe through a tax credit) and offering the day off from work.

                • PiMan says:

Well Australia has the last two covered to some degree. Voting is compulsory else have a chance of being caught and given a $50 fine. And voting is always on a Saturday, which many people get off work.

                • minerva146 says:

In theory it’s a sound concept. The problem with it is that elections are run on state and county levels. I think that sort of thing would lead to even more caging than we have now. “You’re democrat/republican/pink with purple polka dots/FSM follower?” Sorry, you didn’t score high enough on the test. There’s no way to enforce this without bias. There would just be too many different standards used and too many rejected for one reason but saying it was really for another. In America, we have the right to remain blithering idiots and still vote. Does that mean I want the fate of my nation decided by idiots? NO!. All we can do is strive to keep people informed (yes, with news, not just punditry, herb) and hope they will make their decision to vote or not vote based on what they know. You have to extend the right to vote to all citizens of voting age, like it or not. The founding fathers knew this. it’s one of the reasons we have a representative republic. The average person may not be capable of governing, but they can chose who they want to govern them.

The best thing to do is continue to keep people engaged in the process, like they were this year. We had the highest voter turnouts because people were interested in participating, and a good share of those were paying attention to issues. Keeping people interested in staying informed, practicing their one chance of involvement in government, is the best way to go. How we get there is the issue. The founding fathers wanted an informed electorate, not restrictions on voting.

          • Dana says:

Yeah, and once upon a time Southern people weren’t allowed to vote unless they took a literacy test at the polls. The poll workers had a special newspaper to use to test the black folks. It was a Chinese newspaper.

The trouble with expecting a certain level of “education” in order to hold the franchise is that someone from the opposing political party gets to decide whether I meet that standard. And the whole notion of “education” in America has become a cruel joke anyway and I blame anyone who is for any sort of schooling, public or private, and who is OK with corporations controlling public discourse, things of which BOTH parties are resoundingly guilty.

          • Paul says:

Actually, I was making a joke, interested to see if anyone would take my comment seriously.

          • Kismet says:

that’s their responsibility. I made it my business to study everything I could for the last 5 months on both candidates. I came out Obama, all the way. For the first time EVAR, I don’t mind people being biased.

EPIC WIN by default. But still epic win.

    • Are you an idiot?

OF COURSE IT SHOWS THE BIAS OF THE PEOPLE!!! It is an election, thus whomever has the most support of the most people wins. So yes, total bias as in votes as in election.

What did you think would happen? They come to your door and you have make our decisions for us? No, people voted, action was taken, he was elected… So yes, bias… Which is the whole point of an election… Ow, you just gave me a headache with how much obvious you pointed out.

      • Paul says:

        “Are you an idiot?”

No, I was making a joke. I did it to see how many people would take me seriously.

Congratulations, sir or madam, you failed.

        • Ah, the I was kidding defense… How quaint. Congratulations, you managed to troll and irritate people who are used to dealing with trolls constantly.

So the test to see if you can blend in with trolls was successful. Your family must be so proud.

Sorry your clever wit can’t be met with proper inflection since it is text thus cannot show if you are mentally incompetent or just making a flat joke.

          • Paul says:

You could have assumed mental incompetnce, or you could have assumed joke. You could have just not assumed anything. You assumed mental incompetence. and typed ALL IN CAPS.
            Hence the fail.

            • Actually I used a shift key and you lack the definition of the word all. I only saw one sentence. You aren’t doing a good job of convincing me otherwise.

As for assuming joke, I usually assume that if it was funny. I assumed mental incompetence and so far it seems to stand as you think one sentence of capitalization means all in caps. If you mean otherwise, then your ability to clarify is lacking.

  60. Well, congratulations Obama. I know I most certainly was not vying for you, but I know how to be a good sport when I’m beat. Best luck as president, because you’ll most certainly need it.

Just please don’t mess up. ;D

  61. Kismet says:

I KNEW YOU COULD DO IT!!!!!!!!! WOOOOOHOOOOOOOO!!! I LOVE YOU!!!!!!!!!!!!

  62. Putuk says:

    It’s a good thing!

  63. ohno says:

    Bummer.
    Anyone know Alan Keyes?

  64. jeff says:

may be available in black, but it won’t be for long since somebody is gonna shoot his ass

  65. Ceefax says:

    C-C-C-C-C-C-COMBO BREAKER! (Click name)

Congratulations from the UK America. USA! USA! :D

America, not just for the ground breaking decision to elect a non-white President, but for him being the better candidate who got into the White House on his own merit and for giving a final judgement on 8 years of Republican misrule, as well as an appalling campaign, completely devoid of morals, this time round by the GOP – spearheaded by someone I previously had a lot of respect for

  66. robyn says:

Hurray! I’m a Brit living in Canada but I am so relieved!

    Also re: assassinations… STFU.

  67. Helga says:

Good for America! I’m a US citizen in school in the UK and couldn’t be more euphoric! McCain had a great run, and was so gracious at the end. I am overjoyed for President-elect Obama!!!!

  68. Sarah says:

Obama was an Atheist until he got into politics. His political adviser told him that to get into chicago politics, particularly black chicago politics, he would have to at least SAY he believed in god.

He’s pro-gay, pro-abortion, a closet atheist, and he is really intelligent..

    THIS GUY IS GREAT!!

Now if we could all tackle the big issue.. How to give this land back to the natives that it was taken from…

    • Ceefax says:

A closest muslim, the closest anti-christ, a closet member of a radical black racist Church, a closest atheist… Obama’s got one huge closet, and that’s just for all his religions!

Also, although in my opinion all of the things you mentioned are indeed great, obvious troll is painfully obvious.

  69. Sarah says:

I thought it was funny when obama mentioned calloused hands in his acceptance speech when you know that his hands are soft like a woman and he has never done enough manual labor in his life to build up any callouses.

    • minerva146 says:

      A. Seeking to emasculate him already?
      B. Maybe he has callouses or maybe not. In either case, I am certain this was a metaphor for working America.

  70. Sarah says:

    Ceefax, let’s get something straight.

It IS true that Obama was a self-declared atheist up until he got into politics.

The other things you mentioned are NOT true.

    1. There is no such thing as an anti-christ, therefore he could NOT be a closet anti-christ.

    2. He is NOT a closet-muslim because he is an ATHEIST. Or at least he WAS. I think it’s much more likely that he is a closet atheist then a closet moslem.

And I meant what I said.. It IS great that he is all the things I mentioned. Except for being a closet-atheist. He should be able to come out all the way and just tell people that he doesn’t believe in any gods or goddesses but he would never get elected.

In fact, it’s much more likely to have a black president or a woman president than it is to have an out-of-the-closet atheist president.

I highly doubt we will see that in our lifetime.

And the thing about Obama having soft hands.. C’mon, you know that’s true. That guy has never built up callouses on his hands.

  71. Sarah says:

It is my honest opinion that Palin should have had an abortion when she new that the fetus was mentally retarded. I think it is cruel to have a baby like that.

  72. Sarah says:

froofrou, why should I be ashamed of myself. Sarah Palin should be ashamed of herself for manufacturing an obviously disgusting and disturbing child.. A child that cannot think or act for itself and looks like a pile of disgusting goo.

We should all be ashamed of these mentally retarded fetuses. Why should they be allowed to survive? Are they pets? Even pets have better motor control then Palin’s “child”. That thing should have been flushed down into the sewers with the rest of the human waste because that is what her baby is – a stinking piece of human waste.

    • froofrou says:

So if I think you are a disgusting waste of human flesh, is it then ok for me to destroy you while you sleep? If you have a lower IQ than I do (which is obvious), is it then ok for me to ‘flush you down into the sewers with the rest of human waste’? If you don’t perform a function as well as I do, is it then ok to refer to you as a ’stinkin piece of human waste’?
      -
I’m not even sure why I’m bothering to answer you. You’re an obvious troll trying to get flames to feed your unnatural desire for attention.

      • Ceefax says:

Troll alarms should have started ringing when “Sarah” started talking about giving the US back to Native Americas now Obama is elected. In fact if I was a betting man I’d say “Sarah” is The Poster Formally Known As “Obama”, post-op.

  73. Ceefax says:

“Due to overwhelming traffic, guests temporarily cannot view Stormfront content. You may register and login to view and join in the discussion.”

    Roffles.

  74. Ernesto says:

Sometimes you pay a little more tax but get free healthcare, education for your kids, better police and security and stuff, in magical far off places like Europe.

In the US governments have a habit of handing all your taxes to their super rich friends on the auspices of fighting a war or “stabilising” the economy.

Seriously though they’re not always a bad thing.

    • TACP says:

Free healthcare isn’t free if taxes are paying for it. Nothing is free but if you want more taxes coming out of your paycheck (if any) to pay for some lazy ass who doesn’t want to work and pay for their own well being, be my guest.

      • Ceefax says:

I live in a country with universal health care and I couldn’t be happier with it – even the most right wing parties over here have to run on supporting universal healthcare to the hilt because to even imply otherwise would be political suicide.

Having people too ill to work because they cannot afford healthcare is not sound economic sense.

      • Ernesto says:

See god forbid the people who can afford it pay a little more and can actually participate in a just society rather than walling themselves in in private communities, and paying private security guards to shoot any poor people who come too close.

What goes around comes around. A fair society benefits everyone.

      • Tessie says:

Strawman argument much? The overwhelming majority of taxes here don’t go to “some lazy ass who doesn’t want to work”, they go to CEOs of companies like Enron and Halliburton…

        Oh, wait…

    • minerva146 says:

I love how these folks always just leave the middle class out of the equation altogether. It’s always either wealthy or welfare. There are tons of people who work very hard and still don’t get healthcare from their employers or afford to purchase it. The middle class is inconvenient to their talking points, so in spite of being the foundation of the economy, they’re irrelevant.

      • Osama Bin Liner says:

Yeah which is why a moderate tax rise to fund universal healthcare would actually leave the middle classes much better off. Noone in the middle classes can afford private healthcare insurance at a standard that won’t leave them fearing financial ruin if a smear comes back with a recall.

A govt, acting in the best interests of it’s people can turn your dollars into a fit-for-purpose healthcare system with a much better return on investment than any private agency will ever or can ever achieve.

It’s not a given that the middle classes will suffer from increased government spending on things that everyone will benefit from.

And anyway for example in the UK the majority of the healthcare budget comes directly from sales tax on alcohol and tobacco, not from income taxes. Add gun sales in there for the US and you have a massive pot to draw on before anyone even looks at their payslip.

        • Indeed, let addictions pay for it. I rather like that.

          • minerva146 says:

I’m OK with that. I once worked with a man (who’s now a rabbi) who said we should legalize illicit drugs (not just pot) and tax the heck out of them, regulating their use in effect. Not only would you have the savings from not fighting the war on drugs, you’d have a surplus coming in from all the added tax revenue. He was still for educating kids about risks, etc, but figured adults should be able to decide for themselves how they want to live.

I don’t know that I agree with him all the way up to heroin, etc, which is what he said (everything legal), but it’s sort of a good idea. That way people are more accountable. They would still be arrested for driving or operating heavy equipment while under influence or could be fired for being high on the job.

It’s an interesting concept in theory. Although it would destabilize the Funyons industry for a while probably.

  75. Mike says:

Prepare to share your wealth Obama voters. Someone’s gotta pay for welfare

    • Ernesto says:

After 8 years of Bush a lot of people are going to need it before it’s all over!

    • minerva146 says:

I repeat my last post Re: middle class.

    • Tessie says:

OOH! Boogity boogity boogity! The big scary black guy is going to take all the nice Ward & June whitefolks’ money and give it to other black people on welfare so they can… Um… be even more black, or something… instead of doing something constructive with it like bankrupting the economy to pay for an unneccessary war or bailing out billionaires!

      Be afraid! Be very afraid!

    • Better the poor get money than the lazy CEOs.

    • Seth says:

More than happy to. I’m successful, I don’t feel threatened by the less fortunate. I like paying taxes. They buy me civilization. I like sharing, it just proves what a success I am. People who don’t want to share are weak and cowardly, but I forgive them.

  76. Tairii says:

My 10th grade history teacher one said to the class, ‘there will be a black man as president before a woman is president.’
    You were right Mr. Stein.

    Woo! It’s President ‘That One.’

  77. waiting for hope and change says:

What happens if this guy doesn’t live up to his promises? He’s a politician, he’s a lawyer, and for some reason people cry when he speaks. Put two and two together.

    • fjaradvax says:

Five (for large values of two or small values of five).

    • Well, we can only take a politician at their word which is an oxymoronic statement if I ever heard one. However, it would be no different a statement if McCain was elected. Either way, we are counting on somebody to do what they say.

  78. Yes we can! We’ll togeteher make changes, Obama !

  79. chris says:

did all of you vote for him cause he was black. or because he was the best man? i bet 50% of you voted because he was black. like a vast majority of african american did. i am not pro macain either. i just didnt fall for the bullshit “change platform” every politician since washington campaigns on “change” so good luck electing a president based soley on color. and you know damn well that was the only reason.

  80. Osama Bin Liner says:

He’s black? Damn I thought he was an arab bent on the destruction of western values and freedom. Last time I get my info from Fox!

    • Phaelin says:

Half-black, actually. Not that anyone really cares.

      • Osama Bin Liner says:

Not really, that sort of racial definition and classification thankfully went out with the victorians.

        • Sarah Palin loves Joe the Plumber says:

No, he’s half black. If he’s not, what is he? Near as I can tell he had two parents and only one was black. If you have two and you take a way one, that leaves one, which is half of two. If you’d like, I can send you an e-mail with the problem worked out.

          • Osama Bin Liner says:

Hows about it’s like his dad was african and his mom was european american, and his skin colour and features reflect both aspects of his heritage.

            Or maybe you’d prefer Mullato?

  81. Marissaftw says:

Even though I am still too young to vote (will be registered in three years) I am so glad that Obama got elected.
It makes me feel very proud to know that the world that my parents and their parents lived in is now history.

Obama, I will be voting for you in the 2012 election, as a newly registered voter. :D

  82. chesca says:

WOOOHOOOO OBAMA O8 BABY!!!!!!!…….FINALLLY BACK TO BEING DEMOCRATIC………IV NEVER BEEN THIS HAPPY IN POLITICS IN MY LIFE………………………………………

LOOK AT THE CROWD FOR OBAMA:MIXED OF DIFFRENT RACES
LOOK AT THE CROWED FOR MCAIN:ONE RACE

  83. Court says:

Barack Obama is just as much WHITE as he is black, therefore instead of calling him “The first African American President” call him what he is mixed or how about we call everyone who is an AMERICAN CITIZEN (including the president) an….. AMERICAN (without adding anything to it!)

  84. Robert says:

Well, hope you enjoy higher taxes, higher energy prices, gas shortages, terrorist attacks, squelching of free speech, confiscation of guns, loss of jobs, inflation, and the like, cuz baby we’re headed for it. Obama’s policies are Herbert Hoover + Jimmy Carter. I weep for our nation.

    • Chris says:

Even if everything you just said was true,
      Barack’s Policies>Bush’s Policies.

We can only get better from here.

      Also, EPIC WIN for Barack.

  85. 5159 says:

…..uhhh…..Everyone knows he’s not completely black, right? Why can’t we just say “The first Bi-racial President” instead of “Black President”?

Or we could do what Court said in his (her?) comment. Do the knowledge.

  86. Jmar says:

I’m sure there were some people who voted for Obama solely based on his race, but I can guarantee you there were plenty of people who voted for McCain based on his race. We are so quick to judge racial issues in this election against any black people, but we apparently forgot about all of the racist bigots who still belong to the KKK. Let’s not deny the fact that there are still many white supremacists living in this country. Whether you hear about them anymore or not, they are still there.

Sure SOME people voted for Obama because he’s half-black, but I really doubt that more than half the country voted for him just because of that.

If you want to talk about people voting with no knowledge of the candidates, don’t make arguments based on only Obama and his race. There are plenty of people who voted for McCain solely because he is a republican. I’m sure there are also people who voted for Obama just because he is a democrat.

The fact is, many people in this country are uneducated about the candidates, and this doesn’t happen only with young people. I’m sure there are plenty of adults who voted on a whim and knew little to nothing about either candidate.

As a country, we need to remember what America is supposed to stand for and embrace our new President-Elect, whether or not we all voted for him. We cannot move forward as a country if we can’t stand together.

  87. Ornage says:

I HAD FINISHED MASTURBATING WHEN I SAW RESULTS. I CAME ON THE TV STILL RUBBING MY CLIT ADN STARTED CRYING RUBBING MY BRESTS ON THE TV I WAS TEARING CRY

  88. cathy says:

damn i thought i would read all the comments:D impossible. but joyful tears in my eyes too ,though i’m REALLY far, in estonia. it’s a celebration, bitcheeess!

  89. Geoff says:

    That’s kinda raciest.

  90. Common Sense says:

Man, i skipped my classes on the wendsday and thursday after Obama was elected.

  91. Mr. GQ says:

    It’s official!
