Newsflash, the republican party has not always been an anti-abortion, anti-affirmative action party. The republican party’s co-opting by the right wing has been a relatively recent thing. I thank my lucky stars that I know fiscally conservative, socially open-minded republicans that don’t think the government has the right to legislate morality, and think our foreign policy has been wrong-headed for years.

(and on top of that, I thought that Powell was a neutral, and scored his Cabinet seat less for party affliliation and more as a means to build bridges to Democrats after a contentious 2000 election–you know, being neutral, black, and having obvious experience and demonstrated competence in senior government positions–after all, I did hear plenty of comments from Democrats to the effect of “at least Bush picked a good Secretary of State” back when Powell held the post)

His endorsement was all about race and hes never been a real republican. He just calls himself one because republicans put him in every position hes had. Hes pro abortion and pro affirmative action and im not sure but I think hes also for raising taxes on the wealthy… that spells liberal anyway you cut it. All of us saw his endorsement of obama coming a mile away and have really never given it much though but if it means that much to you…. aww rats a well known “republican” is endorsing obama. If you’d watched his endorsement you’d have seen he responded in advance to those who said he was endorsing another black man “if that was the case, I could have made this endorsement months ago”.
He talked at length about each candidate’s handling of the economy, and their temperments throughout the campaign. Huge factors for him that no one here seems to has mentioned.

Powell is a consumate General who learned to play politics a long time ago to survive. Like most top military, he got where he is by kissing rears, sucking up and sticking to who he thinks will help him the most. I’m not surprised at all. And that’s not counting the race factor.

Colin Powell really isn’t a politician though. I mean this is a man who had strong enough convictions to spend hours trying to talk Bush out of war with Iraq which, *suprise*, Bush didn’t listen to. The Bush White House then forced him out of office and replaced him with a puppet.
