But it came from a guy who actually served in Bush’s administration – That’d be the candidate who slurred McCain in SC with rumous that McCain had fathered an illegitimate black baby using robo calls.
If you don’t like robo calls then sure, don’t support candidates who use them but don’t support and and not the other when there is no difference in that regard.
To some neutrals it just looked like he thought “hey there’s a black guy on the ballot” what reason can I find not to support the white guy from my party? Oh yeah, robo calls!
Not just robo calls but also these supposed “scare tactics” – Classic strategy, not limited to any one campaign.
McCain – Obama increases the likelihood of Terrorism, run!
Obama – McCain increases the likelihood you’ll lose your house, run!
Kerry – Bush will go to war with everyone, run!
Bush – Kerry will diminish our national security, run!
It happens, deal with it, don’t use it as an excuse to hide your real reasons for picking candidates.

And from a NC perspective, I have YET to hear a democratic add thats not
based in the positive. Asking folks to vote, look into the issues, and calling out
everyone to make sure the change they vote for is the change they need.

Yeah, I guess from a particular mindset, some of the ads could be seen as negative. They remind you that McCain is no improvement on W. But I agree that mainly they’ve been focused on the issues. The comparison of McCain to Bush is relevant. I didn’t think they were negative, especially when compared to the fear based ones McCain’s been airing.
I’ve received 3 robo calls from McCain’s camp and every single one has started with “Hi I’m XXX from the McCain campaign. Did you know that Obama made bombs at terrorist house parties/wants all your money/eats aborted babies?”

If you’d watched his endorsement you’d have seen he responded in advance to those who said he was endorsing another black man “if that was the case, I could have made this endorsement months ago”.
He talked at length about each candidate’s handling of the economy, and their temperments throughout the campaign. Huge factors for him that no one here seems to has mentioned.

His endorsement was all about race and hes never been a real republican. He just calls himself one because republicans put him in every position hes had. Hes pro abortion and pro affirmative action and im not sure but I think hes also for raising taxes on the wealthy… that spells liberal anyway you cut it. All of us saw his endorsement of obama coming a mile away and have really never given it much though but if it means that much to you…. aww rats a well known “republican” is endorsing obama. Newsflash, the republican party has not always been an anti-abortion, anti-affirmative action party. The republican party’s co-opting by the right wing has been a relatively recent thing. I thank my lucky stars that I know fiscally conservative, socially open-minded republicans that don’t think the government has the right to legislate morality, and think our foreign policy has been wrong-headed for years.

What do you have against eloquent and concise statements made by African Americans? How did you feel about Palin’s defense of her wardrobe budget? Was that the opposite of “lame”? How about any of McCain’s positions on Obama’s Muslim terrorist leanings (there have been a few and they have been varied).
I was discussing politics with a co-worker today… mused that it wouldn’t be all that surprising if Colin Powell, Chris Buckley, and other like-minded souls split off a new Conservative party that wouldn’t be held hostage by religious crazies. Such a party might draw some heavyweight converts, Lieberman and H. Clinton come immediately to mind.
In any case, a battle for the heart and soul of the Republican party seems imminent. I’ll be watching, with popcorn.

The key to this is the significance of McCain’s failure to gain the support of reasonable Republicans, an indicator that he does not represent mainstream conservative values…he gave them up when he allowed the extreme right to buy his soul.
But what constitutes mainstream Republicanism? The Republican party is a house divided, with fundies on one side and fiscals on the other.
Don’t forget about *Constitutional* Republicans (I know a few of those).
I thought they’d mostly gone libertarian.
as an addendum, I think they’re a dying breed, which is sad.

Colin Powell really isn’t a politician though. I mean this is a man who had strong enough convictions to spend hours trying to talk Bush out of war with Iraq which, *suprise*, Bush didn’t listen to. The Bush White House then forced him out of office and replaced him with a puppet. He has every right to endorce someone who doesn’t want to keep going blindly toward failure and reassess what we need to do with Iraq.
Powell is a consumate General who learned to play politics a long time ago to survive. Like most top military, he got where he is by kissing rears, sucking up and sticking to who he thinks will help him the most. I’m not surprised at all. And that’s not counting the race factor.
