This is where you can find more out about these ‘Silent Sieges’. We pray for the end of abortion.
The Life Tape on the pregnant stomach is a symbolism that the child is alive, and has been from the moment it was conceived.
The tape over her mouth is a symbol of unborn children not having a voice, and we are visually standing in their place. Our purpose is to pray, not scream and shout at people and cause fights.
The organizers of Bound4Life (Lue Engle from the Call) were wise when organizing this prayer event. The tape encourages silence and prayer. This is a rather heated subject, and can fetch some heated vocal battles. One event I was at we got shouted at a lot, it was easier to remember our reason for being there with the tape. It’s a symbol and a reminder. We’re there to pray.
We vote only for those against abortion, not along party lines. Heck if a democrat was against abortion, he’d get my vote, though generally I vote republican.

No, yay for choice. If you don’t want to have an abortion, don’t, but don’t take away my hypothetical choice. It’s a fundamental thing. There are very few circumstances in which I can see myself have an abortion (read: I am against it unless the mother’s life is in danger or there are other circumstances at play like rape or incest) but the government taking the CHOICE away? No.

I think the point of the picture was missed. This was a protest by pro-life people a year and a half ago in Washington DC to “commemorate” Roe v. Wade’s 34th anniversary.

They’re the group that started using red tape with the word “LIFE” on it.
They use it in reference to the 50-million+ children aborted since Roe v. Wade, signifying the fact that pro-life groups such as themselves believe that unborn children aren’t given the same rights as other children/humans and are therefore “silenced” before they can speak for themselves, hence the tape across the mouth.
I am a member of one of the local chapters of the aforementioned group, so yeah, I’m in that ridiculous group of righties. It’s pretty sweet

50 million? Where is that number from? The population has never been growing at that rate. Considering abortions are not a huge percentage of all pregnancies, that number is almost impossible. Even over 30 years’ time.

I work for the CDC. I am Pro-Choice and have to agree the closest estimate we can come up with is 50 million. Now that is to be noted that the abortion rate is on the decline, I personally think that it is due to increased sex ed. But if one looks at the most recent report to be made public (2004) the highest demographic for abortions is the age group of 15 and under. To combat this amazing number and protect our teen daughters from these unimaginable social and psychological pressures we need to find some way to reduce teen pregnancies especially among those so young.
Though it is to be noted deaths of mothers from abortions dropped significantly after Roe vs. Wade. Though like all surgical procedures there are a handful of deaths per year.

Whether you are pro life or pro choice, this seems a contradictory way to make the point that abortion is wrong, IMHO. If you really feel abortion is always wrong, shouldn’t you be emphazising the fact that YOU are using your voice to give one to the fetus that has none? And that others should, also?
I think it’s just another example of somebody trying to make a point but not quite doing it, you know, maybe a “logic fail”, or a “point fail”, regardless of if you agree with what she is attempting to say.

I too urge PK to return to ICHC’s basis of humor. But it is increasingly apparent that PK is not about humor, at least not as we approach the election. It is about advancing an extreme left-wing agenda.

We used to have avatars here. They stopped showing up not long after I started posting and I never knew what happened to them. Right now this site and GraphJam are the only ones without avatars.
I wonder if that has to do with the number of posts/comments? ICHC had avatars for a while until the site’s popularity took off and they disappeared. PK had them for a while, too back in the day (if my memory serves which sometimes it doesn’t it just looks at me and says get your own damn soda).

I would have to agree. One reason I am pro-choice is because there are already so many children here dying of preventable diseases, starvation, and other awful things, yet everybody only wants to save the unborn fetus (that’s right, technically it is called a fetus, not a child or a baby)? I care more about the suffering kids in Darfur than I care about a fetus. Besides, I support a right to bodily domain anyway. If a person needs another person’s kidney to survive, the second person should not be forced to give that kidney (even though it would be the nicer thing to do). A fetus is a lot like a parasite. It feeds off the host and doesn’t offer any benefit in return. It usually affects the mother’s body for life. I do not necessarily approve of abortion, but if a woman wants to get one that is her business.

I believe this is a picture from the Terri Schiavo case… duct tape across the mouth with “LIFE” written on it was practically iconic during that little fiasco, and it wasn’t just women doing it. Actually, it wasn’t just pro-lifers, either. Plenty of the more moderate people who supported abortion ended up on the other side because they define a fetus as non-living, but an adult woman as living. Considering the fetus had more brain activity, I considered this strange…
I was still quite concerned, though, because we had to use an autopsy to confirm her brain-dead state, and an autopsy is too late. I don’t think we have the technology to justify withdrawing life-support from people in PVS states; there’s too much risk of accidentally killing someone who is not actually brain-dead.
I am disabled myself (though obviously not in a PVS) and I’m not too keen on anything that could put people in danger, no matter what level they’re functioning at. We need better technology so we can figure out the difference between brain-dead and barely alive; better to keep someone like Terri Schiavo alive, just in case, until we can tell for sure. After all… brain dead people do not suffer.

Ugh, this whole “wards of the state” argument is OLD and it’s not useful. The whole point is sex education, and not conceiving these babies to begin with. Whenever pro-choice women become pregnant, they call the “fetus” their BABY, and they put photos of the sonogram on the refrigerator and take their pre-natal vitamins and mourn the child if they miscarry. The “choice” arguments are flimsy, and rely solely on semantics. Abortion is about flesh and blood and it exploits women. The only pro-choice advocate I respect is Naomi Wolf who admits that the pro-life arguments are the truth–and somehow we must find a middle ground.
Women still die from legal abortions–the abortion clinics don’t document them. When the cervix is punctured and the woman hemorrhages, they drive them to the hospital themselves and will not say it’s from a botched abortion. Thousands of women still die from abortions. Most women suffer emotional and psychological trauma, but the left just ignores them. Abortion clinics do not offer counseling, they don’t decide to help a woman who CHOOSES to NOT abort her baby. It’s not about choice, it’s about money, and it’s about blood. Abortion is used as birth control. And women say it’s “their bodies,” and then the bodies of their babies are put into incinerators which are kept far away so that nobody can smell their flesh baking. This is the truth.

It has been argued that abortion is primarily for the benefit of men: “You get rid of that ‘thing’ or I am out the door. No way am I supporting or suffering the inconvenience of a child.” Typically, the woman does it and the guy eventually leaves anyway. One of the social factors surrounding abortion never discussed.
The few women I have known who admitted to having had abortions all considered themselves to have been damaged by it. Some by the process of getting one (one was 13 or 14 at the time and had to go before a board of 15 physicians in order to get their approval for the procedure); another had had multiple abortions and was consumed by visions (not literally, she wasn’t psychotic) of the children might have had.
“Informed consent” would mean making women aware of the possible consequences, and it JUST DOESN’T HAPPEN because it would undermine a considerable part of the left’s agenda.
THAT’S what is meant by exploitation.

Not all liberals are exactly the same. I have several liberal views, but I think we should seriously consider nuclear energy. The only problems with it are the waste, and that a significant amount of Americans may not accept it because of paranoia of nuclear explosion. Still, it should be seriously considered as an alternate energy source. Same with wind and solar energy.
And not all liberals are like the ACLU. I am for religious freedom for everyone, including Christians. I think whites and non-whites should have the same rights. I do not believe in affirmative action. Many conservatives are hypocrites too. There is an article called something like “The only moral abortion is my abortion” about pro-life women who get abortions/have their daughter get abortions, yet still go around protesting against abortions. There are hypocrites in every political group.

See abortion made illegal? Not every woman who becomes pregnant WANTS to carry to term. Call her a murderer, call her a whore- maybe she’s 16 and made a mistake, maybe she’s 25 and was lied to (he was 40 and said he had a vasectomy) and maybe she’s 35 and just got a new job and can’t risk it.
So let’s make abortions illegal- and what will many women do? What they used to do- get back alley abortions. Or do it themselves! (Which may or may not kill them or render them barren- but that’s their come uppance, yes?) You’ll see them end up in the emergency rooms (I know two ER nurses who see this frequently) half-poisoned from home brewed abortifacents. Illegalizing abortions might bring the number of abortions down a little bit, but I can guarantee that a lot of women will try to self abort, which can have deadly effects. I do not necessarily approve of abortion. I probably wouldn’t get an abortion unless it was to save my life. But just because it’s against my morals doesn’t mean we should make it into law. A woman should have the right to her own body. The bodily domain right is what keeps the law from forcing us to give our kidneys to save someone else (while giving the kidney would be the nice thing to do, we should still have the right to our own bodies).
We already have enough homeless kids here as it is… Why keep adding more to the bunch?

I think if we as a society quit talking about abortion for a while, and put all that energy and money and time into developing new means of birth control and getting what we already have out there, and into empowering girls so they don’t get caught in the trap of “if I make him use a condom he will leave me”, and into measures that will reduce rape and incest, and into health developments that will ensure women can stay healthy all throughout a pregnancy and that a fetus will turn out to have no birth defects incompatible with life…..etc….the number of abortions would drop to almost zero really quickly.

As a pro-life liberal, I believe in birth-control. I also believe that abortion is NOT a form of birth control, and should not be a choice. It involves blood. We need to educate ourselves, our children, women around the world, about pregnancy and how to prevent it. But we simply cannot tell women that they can dispose of their unborn babies like garbage because the mere existence of that baby puts a damper on the mother’s “destiny.”
To use arguments about forcing women to have babies they don’t want, or the idea that there will be all these babies running around unwanted is to be ignorant of the real issue. We are not looking at this issue for what it really is, and it is only pro-life groups who DO show concern and support for women who make their “Choice.” It is the “choice” groups who believe that abortion is the only way out. Why? Because it’s how they make their money. They even ignore–and even MAKE FUN OF–women who have been traumatized by their abortion. As for choice: You have the choice to have sex. When you choose to have sex, you have the choice to use birth control. They die from infections after natural miscarriages because they are too afraid to go the ER for fear of being accused of trying to cause an abortion.
They die when doctors don’t aggressively treat their medical issues when they are pregnant for fear of harming the fetus. (This almost happened to my mom-during one of her pregnancies before Roe vs Wade, she went to the ER with what turned out to be a tubal pregnancy, the doctors wouldn’t even talk to her after finding out she was pregnant, just hurried her out the door very fast. She bled very severely and literally almost died before a doctor would operate and remove the tube and ovary.)
They die when they don’t get the choice to abort or not when when carrying the child to term *might* kill them, but the doctor isn’t sure enough that this will happen that an abortion is allowed by law, and it turns out that it does kill them.

Give me a break. Doctors try to save the lives of women AND their unborn child. No GOOD doctor would put the welfare of one over the other. If they do, they’re not a good doctor. And: Women die from LEGAL abortions and they don’t document it. I’m a pro-life liberal vegetarian Democrat (though I do eat fish, I know, I’m a total hypocrite)….I don’t believe in humans killing humans in any way at all. I’m against the war, I am a rape survivor, and a single mother. Truth be told, if the “fetus” or “blob” or “tissue” really really really wasn’t a human being, I’d be all for this “right.” But it’s a human, because life is a continuum. There is a beginning and an end. The beginning is when it comes into existence and the end is when it dies. The “fetus” (a Latin term of endearment, meaning “little one”) is a human being at that stage of life. It is just a term. The choice arguments rely solely on semantics and word-play and phrases like “women die” and “our bodies” and “our freedom” to support a gruesome, horrific act. If we were not killing little human beings, I would be the first in line yelling at the top of my lungs for this “right.” But we are support the legal murder of innocent human lives so that women can….what? Keep their boyfriends? Keep their jobs? Buy more shoes?
