CF, journalists aren’t sacred. They are people who tell the news as they see it or if they are really good, without bias. We mostly have the former. As for underpaid, I am underpaid. They can suck it up just like I have to as pretty much EVERYBODY this day and age has to.

As for eyes and ears, well think of it this way. If everybody and their mother were constantly trying to see and hear you, no matter when and where you were, I bet you would get sick of them too.

From what I’ve ready, virtually all of the journalists who have died since the invasion have been locals who just happened to be killed along with other non-journalist civilians. Almost none were embedded journalists, and among those embedded journalists it does not appear any would have been helped by body armor.

Nope. They also implemented the embed program in Iraq, specifically to put journalists with the troops, but did not provide them with any kind of physical protection like kevlar vests or helmets.

“Let’s generate a bunch of positive reports by having the press actually sleeping with the military, but who cares if they get shot and die. No loss for us because a dead journalist can’t report their own death!”

Look at the angle of the picture in relation to the gun barrel. The photog is not in front of the gun, nor in the actual line of fire. And I doubt that they “carelessly ran in front of a gun.” It looks like a photo op to me, where there would be a lot of photogs bustling around trying to get a good shot.

Sorry that journalists are busy being your eyes and ears where you can’t be, and at the same time are underpaid and understaffed and are losing their jobs to bloggers who just regurgitate the reporting done by actual journalists. They have so much more to worry about that “upping their armor class.”

It comes down to advertisers. Major news corporations can’t break the corrution stories because they will lose ad revenue. As much as we like to believe that the media is the fourth estate and a watchdog, they are in bed with the same guys the politicians are. News is a business and there is a bottom line to be had.

I know exactly what freedom of the press means. I didn’t mean to generalize. But often there are stories about corrupted government (on both sides) that never get covered. Come live in Milwaukee to see what a joke the Journal Sentinel is to our state. You’ll understand why Journalistic responsibility and integrity dying a slow death. Secondly, no founder would think freedom of the press involves celebrity magazines. That garbage is hurting our country. I know you know this.
