  1. DeathWyrmNexus says:

I died a little inside. I feel sorry for the little old lady.

    • republicanpsycho says:

I dunno, I’d hesitate to help anyone ever if every person I spoke to that wasn’t wearing fatigues had the potential to have sixty pounds of c-4 strapped on or about their person.

  2. Johnny Z says:

Would pobably help if we knew the story behind this so crazed idiots don’t go all half cocked and pass judgement without knowing the facts..

  3. Uncle Fester says:

Problem with a snapshot is that it is just that… the only context is the caption. Did one try to help and get cursed a blue streak that would have had Teamsters diving for cover, blocking their ears, or are they uniformed sociopaths who’d not help an old lady to anything save 10 inches of steel?

    One really can’t tell

Take as teh funneh, and move on…

  4. Uncle Fester says:

Damn you Johnny Z, I was posting the same thing, just with more tact…

    Considered joining the Diplomatic Corp?

  5. Captin lol says:

You know you’re on the internet, right?

  6. lolbukkit says:

Maybe she’s an insurgent. YOU DON’T KNOW. It could be a RUSE.

  7. Roxtar says:

chivalry is dead… thanks feminism. you wanted equality, carry your own bag. that said, i would have tried to help the old lady.

    • Seth says:

While I agree that equality means you can’t EXPECT anyone to carry bags or open doors for you based on your sex, equality does not mean that a woman must refuse such help, or that a man may not offer. Personally, I hold open doors for anyone, it doesn’t take much time, and it makes people smile. (Yeah, I’m nicer in person than on the Internet. Who isn’t?)

I think beyond her being a woman, she is old, and looks to be in pain. That is enough reason to help anyone carry a heavy package, if you really need a reason to be nice.

    • Jackie says:

I’ll just say that everyone should have equality and I am happy that I consider I do have equality. That being said, anyone that seems to be needing help should be helped, an old man in pain trying to move a package needs help too. I hold doors for whoever I see behind me. Why because it’s common courtesy.

I do agree that we don’t know if someone did try to help her at some time.

    • Jocasta says:

Someone needs a book on feminism not written by Rush Limbaugh.

    • Mark says:

I think the unspoken thing that has caused all this confusion is that women wanted equal RIGHTS, but not equal RESPONSIBILITIES.

Chivalry is dead, and it was killed by feminism.

  8. Mary says:

I wouldn’t want them to help her. They are probably over seas for the whole Iraq thing and that could be a ploy to hand deliver a bomb and blow them up. I hope they come home safe and sound very soon.

  9. Jim says:

She’s lucky she didn’t find a couple of frag-grenades lobbed at her. Look at the squinty eyes and the deceivingly crippled look!! Take out the Tango now!!!! Even if that is downtown Nebraska City!

  10. Mrs. Hooah says:

First of all – I’m trying to figure out why an elderly Korean (I think) lady is pulling a box through a parking lot on an active military installation. Secondly, these guys do crap all day long that pansy pencil pushers choose to look down their noses at, just because they’re not brave enough to do it themselves. Thirdly – Soldiers are the biggest bunch of vulgar mofo’s I’ve ever come across. BUT, they’re also some of the most polite. They open doors, “yes ma’am”, “no ma’am”. I should know, I’ve seen these guys at their best and worst. And, after a two week field problem – if my husband is sitting in a parking lot – tired, dirty, and smelling like B-A&F, and just wants to sit there. Then, by God – I think he has that right.

Side note: This doesn’t really anger me, because anyone who is military knows. Just like they’ll know what B A & F is ;) (I wish I didn’t know what it was, lol). I just think it’s stupid to flippantly caption something that portrays American Soldiers as anything less than brave. Yet another right, afforded by the guys in the pic.

    ~Don’t hide your military pride~

    • Mom (USA) says:

That Korean looks conspicuously not Korean. She doesn’t even look East Asian.
The closest to Korean that I could see her realistically being, is Sri Lankan, or possibly from southern India. African decent is more likely.

    • It’s funny. Relax, no one is taking potshots at soldiers. And soldiers are real people, they aren’t cartoon Canadian Mounties.

    • yeah right says:

having been in the military myself, instead of just married to someone in the military, i feel like i have every right to tell the world what masogynistic a-holes MOST military men are. there are certainly exceptions, and there are plenty of them who will cover their sexist attitude with a well placed “ma’am” or two, but until you are actually a woman in the military… you will never see them at their absolute worst. even if you did marry one.

      • I agree says:

I worked at a grocery store on a military base once. Believe me, military guys are definitely NOT the most well mannered or chivalrous group of people.I have never in my life faced such sexual harassment at any job, ever. If a day went by that I wasn’t hit on, and then called a lesbian when I turned them down or showed them my wedding ring (which doesn’t even make sense) then I considered it a good day, and that’s not even close to the worst thing that ever happened. So just because you married a good one, doesn’t mean that they’re all good, and if I want to make “flippant” comments, based on my own personal experiences, then I will. Not every man in the military is a hero.

  11. OldJokesNeverDieOfAids says:

I think she’s a terrorist — I’ll bet she’s knitting an Afghan somewhere in secret.

  12. erihoney81 says:

If you are told to sit there, not wander off, you sit there. And look like a lazy ass.

    • PortlandMark says:

Just what I was thinking. “Can I help you with this? Where are you going?” “To the next village twenty miles away!” “Oh! Umm… err…”

  13. Tessie says:

Helpin Granma… yr doin it rong.

  14. SGAStorm says:

We don’t know what’s going on just out of frame. The uniforms they’re wearing haven’t been in use for that long so it’s not from the Katrina aftermath. Not to mention nothing there looks flooded or tore up, so it’s not likely to be Hanna or Ike.

The building in the background does look like your standard issue brown Army or Air Force building. Since those are Army insignia and not Air Force on the ABU’s I’m going to go with Army base.

She could be an evacuee, but there’s really no way for us to know what’s going on unless the original submitter wishes to fess up. There’s also no way for us to know what’s in that box, how she got it, or how heavy it is, so before people whip themselves up into a self-righteous frenzy we should just keep that in mind.

    • briansmom says:

Ya know there was another MAJOR hurricane – Gustav. Oh, that’s right, I forgot, since it didn’t wipe out 3/4 of New Orleans and only devastated Baton Rouge and surrounding areas the media DIDN’T GIVE A SHIT! We have a governor now that knows his ass from a whole in the ground and the mayor of Baton Rouge has more dignity and intelligence in his little finger than that idiot mayor Ray Nagin of New Orleans has in his entire family. Because Gustav wasn’t a complete and total cluster fuck in the after math y’all didn’t really get to hear much about how bad things really were around the Baton Rouge area. This was probably taken around the Baton Rouge area at one of the distribution sights.

  15. Emilah says:

That’s what you get for a bunch of army boys.
If those were Marines, this would be a different picture entirely.

(Just playin, but I agree with the other commenters, it really depends on what was going on in this picture.)

  16. Too Good For You says:

That’ not even a BAG, it’s a freaking sheet of cardboard or something, anyone notice it’s only like an INCH across?? God people are always so quick to insult they don’t take to time to pay attention to what’s going on first. It’s always Pass Judgement, *then* maybe an Oops later. Bunch of losers. Whoever admins this page is a loser.

  17. Biff says:

Chivalry didn’t die, feminists killed it.

    • PiMan says:

Truly chivalrous people help both men and women,

      • froofrou says:

I have actually seen a “feminist” cuss out a man who opened a door for her. It’s a crap shoot as to whether you’re going to get a lady who wants nothing more than to be treated with common courtesy, a woman who doesn’t care either way, or a total feminist wacko who would rather die than let a man help her. Most guys will hedge their bets in a situation like that and just not help rather than be abused by a female.
Then there’s my husband, who would probably pick up the rampant feminist like a two year old throwing a tantrum and gently place her inside the door he just opened before leaving her there to gnash her teeth :-) He’s been known to make me get back inside my vehicle when I get out on my own just so he can act like a man and open the door for me :-)

        • Eric says:

If your husband would actually touch an angry woman don’t be surprised if he comes home with a face full of mace.

          • froofrou says:

Believe it or not, the reason she’s angry would bother me more than him coming home with a facefull of mace *sigh* This country has really gone into the crapper if a man gets castigated for trying to be nice.

        • Tessie says:

I once had a guy in a wheelchair cuss me out for holding the door for him, e.g., “I am NOT helpless!”, etc. I responded with a shrug instead of saying, “Fine, I’ll slam the door in your face, then”, because life only lasts so long and it doesn’t help me to get aggravated because ONE person is a rude jerk. Some men are rude jerks. Some women are rude jerks. Some children, old people, handicapped people, etc. etc. are rude jerks. I choose to hold doors for anyone who looks like they need it (wheelchair, stroller with kids, arms full of packages), let other cars merge in traffic, etc. If the other person doesn’t fall down groveling with gratitude for my saintly behavior [smirk], then so be it.

          • Jane St.Clair says:

*applauds* Thank you! Reason prevails over baseless generalizations!

          • Isengrim says:

Sure. Chivalry is as chivalry does. As a 40 year old woman, I will look around me when I open a door going into, say, Tim Horton’s (heh) and let whoever else is there pass in or out first. Regardless of age, sex, or whatever. It’s the simplest, most basic, “please you go before me” gesture a person can make.

And if someone holds a door open for me, I smile and say “thank you”, as I appreciate the common courtesy returned from others, regardless of who is doing the door holding (though, granted, the smile might be a bit bigger if the holder is a good-looking fellow ..) :)

        • CaitStClair says:

And I got cussed out recently for calling a man “sir”. That doesn’t mean I’m going to stop using it.
Haven’t gotten cussed for holding doors open though, usually just a thanks. Although, guys, for future reference? If a gal’s holding a door open for you, just go through. It really just makes things more awkward if you try and insist on holding it so that she can go through first.

      • Beth Johnson says:

        exactly

    • myboocat says:

she is old- not just female. age deserves respect, i think. and some assistance from those more able. to blame feminisim for rudness is evidence of testosterone poising yr brain!

  18. YDFOC says:

Get yo ass up and help yo Mama now!

  19. Uncle Fester says:

Maybe if she’s flashed some leg….

    Ok

    No

Not even I want that image…

  20. Ana Pires says:

Chivalry? I would consider it more of a common courtesy thing, etiquette, whatever you want to call it. It doesn’t matter if it’s a woman or a man, young or old. You see someone struggling with something heavy, you get off our ass and go help them. :|

  21. Bindie says:

Sure guessing as to what is really going on in this picture is up for debate, but I want to know why they are outside with out their hats on. No matter what, if you are outside in uniform then you must have a hat on unless on a flight line. Since they aren’t on a flight line, then I must wonder, if this picture is, in fact, real at all, and not staged.

  22. Katie says:

Maybe they didn’t speak the same language, and they didn’t want her to think they were trying to rob her, or maybe they had asked if she needed help, and she said no.

    • Jane St.Clair says:

I salvaged this plywood/cardboard box/whatever all by myself, damned if I’m gonna let some uppity US soliders rob me!

    • CaitStClair says:

Ever travel to a country where you don’t know the language? You can still get your point across. I wouldn’t buy that as an excuse.

  23. Rach says:

Sad image but I disagree with the statement. I ride the Boston subway on a regular basis, and I see people give up their seats for the elderly or pregnant people all the time, and I’ve also seen strangers help ladies with heavy items.

    • wundawomun says:

That’s nice people are helpful in your area, because in parts of California older, preg, or crippled, etc. people need the front seats on the busses & people try to ignore them or not give up their seats.

Also at one of the trolley stations an old man was crippled. He walked bent way over and had a rolling bag. We had to step down from the platform and back up & nobody paid attention to him at first so I had my son go help him with his bag. I felt so bad seeing him like that & we walked with him to find a bench. I just thought it was really lame that no men tried to help. One guy saw my son with the older man & gave him $2 for being a little gentleman. But it sucks seeing people in a need & others not even acknowledging them.

  24. Johnny Z says:

Ok, in reality, you want to know what those troops are thinking? They’re thinking, “yeah, I’d hit that!”

Don’t believe me? You’ve obviously never spent a whole lot of time around the military ;)

    • Beth Johnson says:

yes an old, tired woman who can’t handle the burden she has. If this person was a man they should have helped him too…..it’s not about being a woman, it’s about being a person in need.

  25. Dan M says:

A feminist’s dream come true; a woman being allowed to do things by herself rather than having to depend on a man.

  26. sarah says:

Because they are in uniform… are they even allowed to help out the civilian? If you look close two of the guys have their over shirts on, I think they are on break. You would have to ask one of the guys who happened to be there.

  27. yayhooray says:

NO ONE CARES ABOUT ANY OF YOUR BELIEFS
AND FIGHTING FOR HOURS ON END ON A LOLPICTURE WONT CHANGE ANYONE’S MIND
    CHRIST
    CAPS LOCK FTW

  28. Beth Johnson says:

it sucks how many of these men are really around–in the military, in the police and fire departments. What happened to every-day-heroes?

  29. laura in TX says:

I can tell everyone the background of the picture. This was in Houston POD’s right after Ike hit. I know because I live down here and saw this same picture in an article about the storm. While I do agree that I wish someone there would have helped the elderly lady, I want to also put in that the soldiers are in actuality National guard troops who worked non stop so we could have power restored-and the troops in the picture were taking a well deserved break.

Since I have the nations attention-I’d like to add that sadly those troops were sent home, it’s now over 4 weeks since Ike, we still have over 100 people missing, mainly in the Galveston/Boliver-an area 80 MILE LONG debris field with NO help from our state OR federal government in body recovery OR debris removal. We have several towns down here 95+ percent destroyed with no more media coverage or help. WHY??????

    • Isengrim says:

Because …. everyone’s too busy rebuilding Afghanistan and helping people in Africa to care about a few fatcat Americans?

Sorry, there’s no proper emoticon for this to express the irony and dripping sarcasm I am trying to get across.

I notice that when disasters happen in third-world countries, there’s oodles of help. When disasters happen in say, North America, one gets only band-aids.

Katrina is almost forgotten in the media. But even the boxing-day tsunami still pops up from time to time. Why?

It’s the same sort of mentality that will drive people to “adopt” some third-world kid from the TV, but cause them to ignore the kid whose family needs help down the street.

  30. justin says:

that woman should be carrying the soilders bags, if not for them she might not have the freedom to walk down the street
