hmmmm…after a long a strenuous read through this plethora of comments, I have come to see that no matter what “side” of the government, whether it be Repub, Demo, Inde, or any other minoity party, there are good and bad people in this party, and because of this, no party is “better” than the other, and while some seem to have had more detrimental effects on the country, it is still not fair to automatically assume a party is evil or stupid.
The biggest problems Ive seen in these government debates all revolve around self preservation or greed. Those with power and money do do NOT want to give it up, and will do anything, legal or illegal to keep it. Those without power do anything they can to GET that power. its always a struggle to be rich, famous, powerful, or any combination of those. even the most well meaning person, if given power and money, becomes biased to ideas that keep that power and money flowing. This is capitalistic thinking, and its seen in the smallest of instances. Our government, whether it is controlled by conservatives or liberals, will always be controlled by the greedy and powerful.
Over time, this is, in my own opinion, why eventually all governments fail. In the end, no matter the intentions and best interests the governing body had in mind, it is destroyed by humankind’s own tendency to be selfish and greedy: to want more than we need, take more than we should and feel the need to be better than our neighbor.

I believe the only way to “make things better” is to decide to change ourselves. This ideal/opinion I have shown is up for a complete debate, as I know many people have differing opinions beliefs and standards. This is why I love America. so many different ideals, and beliefs.

This is exactly what I wish more people of faith would understand. No one really knows what God thinks, if anything like that really exists. People can point to personal beliefs and experiences or to supposedly revealed texts, but I think if we really want to know what God thinks we have to look at the universe, laws of physics, things that are real. If there is a God, and it created the universe, then I think we can find out at least as much about that God through science than we can through storytelling and human moralizing.

Most of the time he’s easier to ignore. Lately he’s gotten on my nerves. Sometimes he does provide substance. I have never taken anything he says at face value (I never take you at face value either), but I seem to remember that he would raise in me legitimate questions that I could use to direct research. I don’t read every comment here (better things to do), but there has been a noticable difference in the discourse on both sides. This whole conversation is juvenile. The first half of the comment is directed at anyone (including EP) that takes the same fallacious stance.

On this we can agree – Congress did inherit the economic misfortunes that have occured in the last few months. They inherited it from Clinton and the liberal Congress in place when he took office. Together, they changed lending law to FORCE lending companies into making more high-risk loans which, in turn caused a rate rate of default, yada yada yada. We wone’t even talk about the corruption within Freddie Mac and Fannie mae that contributed to the downturn. Bush’s mistake was allowing Clinton’s mistake to continue when he did have a congress that could do something about this, but THIS Congress – with all their big talk about DOING something – have done absolutely nothing to correct this.

And on the subject of doing nothing in Congress and our current gas price dilemma, consider this: One thing that we could do to lower prices dramatically would be to simply refine it ourselves. We have to buy gasoline – not oil – from foreign countries because CONGRESS has made it impossible to build any domestic refineries in the last 30+ years through legislative red tape. Repealing those laws are well within THIS Congress’s scope. And as far as drilling not helping now – the pipelines are ALREADY THERE in the gulf!!! Foreign countries are ALREADY THERE drilling closer to our borders than Congress will allow our own companies drill!!! We could ALREADY be on our way to reducing our dependance on foreign oil by simply USING OUR OWN. American ingenuity still exists, but Congress won’t allow anyone to use the technology we have. and on the subject of energy independence, why is it Congress has pretty much prohibited exploring nuclear power? After all, we ARE the ONLY superpower that doesn’t use this safe, cost-effective, long-lasting energy source.
