  1. ROFLCOPTER says:

    OMG ROFLCOPTER IS BACK

i knew why i always hated barbie dolls :D

really i pity you americans for your politic system and your politicans.

    • At least we don’t have to put together shaky coalitions to form a government.

    • Charlie Foxtrot says:

Too bad, cause ours’ is the best, and any country that has any type of constitutional democracy owes a debt to us. Now we do manage to challenge our own belief in freedom periodically, as in with our current administration, but, so fr we have managed to rebound.

      • ROFLCOPTER says:

uhm rofl we own you a debt? democracy was invented by the greek. like a thousands of years before columbus was even born.

        • Charlie Foxtrot says:

Ah, yes, but it only existed on a small scale. Representative Democracy, brought about by the Romans, still had not really spread outside of Roman Conquest. The Beauty of American Style Democracy (granted, instigated by the scottish and french schools of enlightenment) is that it spread by idea, not conquest. The biggest problem with Pres Bush’s Iraq is that you can’t force democratic ideals upon a people, they have to take them on themselves.

          • herb says:

Basically, America cherry-picked the best features of the Greek democracies and the Roman republics, seasoned with a few thoughts here and there of others, and made the blue-ribbon government system (that I’ve ever had, at the least).

            • ROFLCOPTER says:

rofl you guys don´t have a democracy. otherwise bush never would have
become president. he did NOT have the most votes.

also a democracy contains usually more then 2 parties especially when those
2 pretty have the same programm.

            • DeathWyrmNexus says:

              Damn, now I am hungry…

          • dontpanic says:

Lol, your history is as bad as your political system.

      • Some Random Israeli says:

I especially like how the people’s Presidential votes are mere recommendations for the Electoral College to vote for them, and that’s what counts. Sets a very good example for everyone, worldwide.

        • ROFLCOPTER says:

well your system failed. why? because you can´t go to the hospital when u need it
without having to care if you can handle the costs or not. EPIC FAIL. gg wp no re

        • Isengrim says:

Actually, it’s pretty scary the way that Americans have it set up. I dunno how they can trust that electoral college, adn it looks like it failed in the case of Bush. Granted, the Canadian system isn’t that great; a lot of people complain that First-Past-the-Post is unrepresentative, but I don’t know if monkeying with that would be very good, either. At least our votes go directly to the party we’re voting for.

  2. Onion says:

    Still not anatomicly correct.

  3. 1.618 says:

OK, now we just sit here and wait for Evil Pundit to come along and tell us that this is not funny, it’s a leftist conspiracy and that the end is nigh if Obama wins.

  4. dethduck says:

    Best laugh I’ve had today.

  5. Actually, the end will already have happened if Obama wins.

    But this one IS funny!

  6. Cookies28 says:

Oooohhh….they forgot…this doll also comes with Depends and
certificates for free coffee at McDonalds!!!!

  7. Charlie Foxtrot says:

After nearly 8 years of one Stepford Wife, do we need another, with yet a third a mere heartbeat away from the Presidency?

    • Jim says:

What first lady, besides Eleanor Roosevelt and Barbara Bush have not been at least Stepfordish? Sheesh! Even Mary Todd Lincoln didn’t have a reply when asked, “Other than that, how did you like the play?”

    • I’d much rather have her than Ms. “I’m NOT proud to be an American.”

      • Charlie Foxtrot says:

Ah, now that is the mark of a true believer… don’t think for yourself and read throught the BS rhetoric, simply regugitate the party line. Keep up the mindless drivel, you might even win. Just remember, 232 years ago, the liberals created America, the conservatives were the Torries. With some few exceptions, liberals advance the course of liberty, conservatives resist it.

        • blah blah black sheep says:

Hence their resistance to the word “progressive.” You’d think that making progress would be a good thing…

          • ck says:

Hence why Repubs hinder science for the sake of religion.

            • ema says:

Because they keep the world safe from tyrany so we can actually pursue science in relative safety??

              • Charlie Foxtrot says:

Ema, we agree!!! The liberals do keep the world safe from tyranny so we can pursue science in relative safety, whereas the conservatives simply want to stop teaching it because it interferes with their personal philosophy.

                • ema says:

Ahhh! I wish we did! But it’s the liberals that want to dismantle our military so we can have more social programs. :(

                  • Charlie Foxtrot says:

Not true, I am a proud liberal and I want a stronger military…in fact I believe that we should re-instate draft not only to correct the GOP controlled Congress’s dismantling of the military during the late 1990’s but also to reinstill the belief that all citizens owe an obligation to serve. In fact, I believe that we should eliminate the reserve, move their units into the national guard, have mandatory service in the national guard with exceptions granted to those who select an active duty option.

                    • Charlie Foxtrot says:

hmmm, no catchy conservative response? BTW, I do actually belive this, good thing I’m not running for VP, because I DO have more executive experience than the pitt bull lady.

                    • lowly grunt says:

I totally agree with you Charlie.

                      • Charlie Foxtrot says:

Thank you, my rant is the idea that all soldiers are heros, we have an all volunteer force, so averge citizens, not being heros, of course, hve a legitimate reason for not serving their country. All citizens should serve because hero’s are ordinary people doing extraordinry things.

                    • PiMan says:

I could have sworn Liberalism _didn’t_ include the draft.
                      .
Honest question: Do you support compulsory suffrage? Or do you think that it is more important to be able to die for ones country than vote for it? That, I would not be able to understand.

                    • I-Tego_Arcana_Dei says:

I have to say this, and I know I’m SO gonna get slammed by EVERYONE.

People say things like “don’t support the war but at least support the troops”.

I can’t. I can’t support someone who volunteers for the military while we are in this war. The war is wrong from the beginning, and people keep feeding me these lines about “serving the nation” and “they protect YOUR freedom” and blah blah blah, but I mean, we’ve lost more rights and freedoms it seems to me since this war started. I don’t feel protected or free. I feel maligned and indignant.

My brother was in the army, but he joined in 99, when it still seemed like a respectable choice. I’m proud of what he did, and at least before he got out, he never had to go to Iraq. He is scared right now that they might call him back. He was so happy to get out, and has been working with the Obama campaign here in Fl since it started. He’s been against the war from the beginning as well, and he only joined because my parents couldn’t afford to help him with school.

My boyfriend and I recently broke up over this. He decided out of the blue to join the Army. It had somehting to do with his parents and we argued over it for days. With him it made me even angrier, because he had to change everything about himself. He got rid of his fav CDs and clothes, and went online and switched all his accounts from “gay” to either say “straight” or nothing at all. He practiced “walking striaght” and “talking straight”, not that he was flamboyant, but maybe just not maculine enough to where it could be called into question. I was infuriated. Here he is , completely chaning himself, getting rid of parts of himself that made me fall for him to begin with, for what/ To serve in the Army, and Army that would kick him out if it ever learned the truth, to serve a country and a military that doesn’t like him, and wont even grant him basic rights. It disgusted me. I left him, I told him I couldn’t support him doing it, and he was just becoming another part of Bush’s war machine, and that I wouldn’t be here for him when he got back. He’s in Iraq now, and I pray that he’s safe, but he shames me, and he tells me how miserable he is (we do talk when we can), but I mean, WTF did he expect. All vesitges of the guy I loved are gone, and he can’t even remeber his reason for doing it anymore.

                      • ema says:

Ok, I am going to get slammed to I suppose but what else is new, here goes… How do you think militant Islam would treat you or your boy friend should they ever become strong enough to have the caliphate they want to have? I think your friend is admirable and I do support our troops, they need our support.

                        • i_tego_arcana_dei says:

i think militant isalm is a red herring, and i laugh whenever people act like its a threat. there is no chance in hell they could ever overthrow the US. cause some damage? probably. but a major, scary, mommy save me threat. naw.

trust me, as nice as you are for saying it, my ex doesn’t give a rats ass if you support him. he’s destroyed himself, and wants nothing more then to come home, or reverse time.

but also, to clarify. i don’t think our soldiers are bad people, or “babykillers” to quote assholes from the vietnam era. i just don’t agree with thier decision. i don’t feel safer because of them, i don’t feel obliged to them. and the fact that i can’t be openly gay and join pisses me off. this war has done nothing but kill people, and destablize a major area of the world (at least worse then it was). its wrong. plain and simple. and it’s helped bush warp the constitution and increase executive power beyond reasonable means.

i’m only semi-liberal. this is my PERSONAL point of view. so don’t feed me any “typical lib” lines because i’m pretty sure most “typical libs” would slap me if i went around espousing this idea all the time. and, just to say, the only 3 other people who have ever agreed with me- 1 was an independant, and the other 2 Republicans.

i’m sick of all the “hero” talk, and people who say it my ex, and to my brother as well, it really pisses them off. i don’t think you get to be called a “hero” unless you actually do something heroic, and justy singing up to join the military and be a grunt, doesn’t cut it. now if you save a family from a roadside bomb, or your unit from a sniper, have at the title. you get it then.

                        • MegaBob says:

There’s lots of other countries you can move to- try Iran ! Lot’s of sunshine, no volunteer army, and ooh those lovely burkha’s you can wear !

                        • DeathWyrmNexus says:

I am with you. If you have to give up everything about yourself for “freedom,” then you aren’t free. Your shackles are just a different type.

                        • ema says:

Tego, with all respect, you sound very cynical. Just the unselfish act of joining the military is heroic. Also, it’s very selfish to expect people who you love to do what you think they should do instead of what they believe they should do. That is conditional love, I will love you if you do what I expect you to do. If you really love this guy you would encourage him in what HE wants to do. He may make mistakes but those are his mistakes to make and learn from. We are all better people because of lessons learned from mistakes we have made IMHO. Also, I wouldn’t discount the power of the Islamic movement in the world and in this country. Islamic nations are out breeding every other nation and in western countries their populations are out breeding the westerners as well. What do you think will happen when those populations reach voting age? So, you see it’s not just a military threat although that is quite real, it is a philosophical threat, which is probably the most dangerous for westerners.

                        • DeathWyrmNexus says:

Well considering that the person has completely recanted and walking into an I told you so situation, it isn’t very cynical when you warned them from the start. Also if a person changes completely out of what you fell in love with in the first place, then why would you expect them to stick around? Love is a two way street. Compromise comes from both ends. The lover didn’t compromise when they decided to reinvent themselves, why expect i_tego to compromise if the other party didn’t?

If I suddenly changed everything about myself, I would be an idiot to expect my girl to stick around longer than it takes to find out that I couldn’t be compromised with.

                  • jellybeans says:

Actually McCain was the first to talk about cutting military $$ – checkk my name for an article on that.
PS – if you call this a leftist blog I will be forced to point at you and laugh mockingly.

              • ck says:

                Mmm…fearmongering.

                • ema says:

Fearmongering? I would be if there was not a real threat. Our economy depends on oil, if we didn’t have the oil suddenly one day, the economy would completely collapse causing major chaos and other really bad stuff. Unfortunately the major oil producing countries are run by strange and unpredictable dictators who could shut us and the rest of the world off from the oil if they wanted to, if we did not take steps to make sure it didn’t happen as unpopular as those steps are. This whole scenario is scary to me and many other people. I would hope we could begin to drill here and pursue other ways to get the energy (especially green ways) we need to keep things moving along. But it wont happen overnight, so we are at a very precarious time right now. Thus the fear.

                  • jellybeans says:

and who’s fault is that Ema? McCain voted against EVERY alternative energy bill that came out. Who kept us dependent on oil? Bush and Cheney with the help of their little lap dog McCain.
Who profits from America’s dependence on oil? Bush’s family, Cheney and his buddies, McCain with his investments in offshore drilling and all those scary evil countries you guys keep threatening us with. China, Russia, Venezuela and the middle east. The republicans made this mess and they are happy to war to defend their ability to screw the country even more.

                    • ema says:

                      China doesn’t have any oil…

                      • jellybeans says:

They lend us a lot of money to buy it though.

                        • ema says:

How does that NOT scare you?

                        • DeathWyrmNexus says:

I am more scared of the jackasses putting us in that postion, thus I am spooked when it comes to Republicans.

                        • jellybeans says:

It scares me like crazy! And I blame the current administration for it. How can you NOT blame Bush/ McCain? The democrats weren’t bouncing up and down in their seats begging to buy more oil. They were pushing alternate energy bills.
The democrats weren’t looking for money from China, they were fighting for veteran’s benefits. The democrats haven’t been hoping to get a shot at Iran, they want to clean up the mess in Afghanistan, kill Bin Laden and get the hell home.
                          -
I really don’t understand you Ema, you seem a lot brighter than EP and Bill but you still spout the lies that have been disproven time and again. . I can understand party loyalty but not with such blind fervor that you are willing to sacrifice the future for today’s hedonistic politicians.

                        • ema says:

So, tell me how we stop using oil now, right now. Tell me how it can be done realistically without ruining the economy. It can’t! We still need the oil or we will go belly up. I want green energy as much as the next person, you think the only way it could come about would be with government investment? Do you really think if there were vialbe alternatives they would not be getting to market now? If the alternatives were so good we would have them now!

                        • jellybeans says:

If the green energy bills had passed in the past decade we would be a lot better off right now – less foreign debt to pay for our oil habits and cheaper prices at the pump because the demand would be down.
As we stand now the republicans have screwed us into needing to keep borrowing and consuming oil until the green energy catches up. They put the lid on developing better energy technologies and now we are all paying the price for it.

                        • ema says:

Probably because the technology was not there, or not feasible and so they saved us from investing in nothing. It’s still a far cry from being there. Just passing a bill is not going to make something happen. Believe me, there is a lot of independent research going on in alternative energy right now. Who wouldn’t want to be the one to discover the answer?

                        • blah blah black sheep says:

It’s not that we don’t have the technology, it’s that it hasn’t been profitable enough to use it or properly develop it. Geothermal energy, for instance. Experiments are funded, proven, then go nowhere.

                    • ema says:

jelly, you are saying that it is McCains fault that our economy is dependent on oil? How long have we been using oil? He’s not that old!! Do you think for one minute that if there were viable alternatives people would not be rushing them to market, even the oil companies would jump on it. They are all about making money you know. The oil companies and their investors are making money because we depend on oil for virtually everything we do, not because they are evil (which they may be, some may not, it has nothing to do with it). If you came up with a good idea for some product that everyone in the world needed to survive and you made tons of money, would that make you evil?

                      • jellybeans says:

But he voted against working towards weaning us off of oil. It is a fossil feul, that means it is a limited quantity. Wind and solar are not limited but he voted time and again against exploring those energies because Oil was making his buddies rich. I see no other reason to STOP innovation other than the people who are getting rich off the old ways want you to stop innovation.

                        • ema says:

No one is stopping innovation, innovation does not HAVE to occur with government funding. How would we have laptops? Does the government fund that too? No, it is the market that drives that with any other viable product. Now, we may at some point have to subsidize green types of energy but at this point none of them will be economically viable from what I have heard.

                        • DeathWyrmNexus says:

From what you heard? And you don’t think we should subsidize energy that would help with our oil dependence until the last minute?

Laptops aren’t what drive our economy, energy is. You are comparing apples and nose hairs.

                        • ema says:

We may have to sadly for some things, it will be a hellish nightmare from hell when the government has to take on that task I fear…

                        • DeathWyrmNexus says:

Any more hellish than the point we are at now? Out of all honesty, we should have done this years ago. As for what I have “heard” the oil company was sitting on plans for clean running cars for years since it would fuck with their business. But like you, I just heard about that.

It isn’t a hellish task, it is just a task. No worse than the ridiculous profits the oil companies are making in this supposed crisis. I don’t see how record breaking profits can be made during a crisis without a record breaking gouge to go along with it.

Economics teaches us that when your supply is low, despite high demand and price raising, you are still at a loss because you lack supply. Have you seen any loss for the Oil companies?

And you call spending money on something else hellish?

                        • DeathWyrmNexus says:

Fucking hell… PK ate my post. *sigh*

To summarize, I find it no more hellish than our current situation. If my other post shows back up, you will see more of what I said.

                        • ema says:

Also, I would be pretty lost without my laptop! And, if computers were somehow taken away from us almost all businesses would be crushed.

                        • ema says:

Wyrm, The higher price is due to market speculation that is why the high profits. Also, I made the hellish comment about the adminstration that would go along with subsidizing new green energy that is not yet cost effecitive, not the actually doing of it because we will probably need to do it.

                        • DeathWyrmNexus says:

Well I think the cost effectiveness is going to be a moot point before too long consider how much it is killing me to fill my tank lately. Ya know?

As for the speculation, I suppose you are telling me to go grab my degree in engineering and go get an oil job it seems since I am fucked otherwise. Well damn.

              • lol says:

More like providing a huge amount of funding for the war while funding for NIH etc. barely keeps up with inflation.

                • jellybeans says:

But when republicans “fund” stuff it all goes to their friends and cousins. Look at that 20something year old idiot in FL that got a huge contract to supply munitions to the government for use in Iraq. He was buying WW2 surplus and shipping corroded crap overseas. How did he get a contract? where is the vaunted “oversight” that pugs are supposed to be so good at?

      • I_Tego_Arcana_Dei says:

If you were a member of a nation that espoused freedom and equality for all, yet were part of a minority that still get’s crapped on (more on the social-economic level then a governement targeted level like it used to be) would you be proud of your country?

I’m part of a newer minority (newer in recognition, not in actual existence), the queers. We get bitch-slapped by our nation left right and center (I mean that in two ways – politically, and from every direction), and yet we keep fighting on, to get what is garunteed to us in the constitution.

Don’t get me wrong, I’m not a one issue voter, but Mrs. Obama explained her comment in the racial minority context, and I agree with her somewhat as a minority myself. but there are many other reasons I feel shamed by my country, not just it’s treatment of those who are different, but many many other reasons add in to it.

I’m not proud to be an American at the moment either. We’re a shit country with shit values, and shit leaders. We place the blame on everyone but ourselves. We have only ourselves to fix it, yet eveyone is to busy arguing over mundane BS like slandering Palin or who’s more American, Reps or Dems. I work my ass off to make change in this nation so I CAN be proud of it. I’m proud of what we used to be, I’m proud of what we are supposed to stand for, I’m proud of our history, even the bad parts because the bad parts made us better, but it seems we don’t learn lessons anymore, we just keep making it worse, but I think we can get there again, only not with McCain. I think our best shot at redeeming ourselves is Obama. Change is what we need, and McCain wont change a thing. I’m not saying Obama is perfect, or even predicting that he is going to be the most fantastic president ever, I just think McCain is an absolutely illogical choice and will do nothing but conintue down this path of self-destruction our nation seems to have been on for the past 20 years.

        • jellybeans says:

I am deeply ashamed that our politicians obviously think so little of our intelligence that they expected we would accept Palin’s credentials.
I am ashamed of my country’s habit of discarding it’s veterans.
I am ashamed that there is still such deep and abiding discrimination in my country.
I am ashamed that this nation of immigrants can’t show compassion to people who work hard looking for a better life.
I am ashamed that we allow millions of children to go without health care.
I am ashamed that we pay companies to send American jobs overseas with the same tax money taken from the Americans who lose their jobs due to outsourcing.
There are many reasons to be ashamed but it doesn’t make a person any less American or mean that they don’t love their country.
How proud are you of the things I listed above?

          • eddiepscetti says:

With the exception of your first ’shame’, I don’t disagree with you (Palin hasn’t been elected yet so it doesn’t really count.) Everyone of those things (except the first) effect every American. On thing though about the discarding of Veterans, you should have been around in the 70’s when soldiers returning home weren’t given the welcome they receive today. Instead they were spit on and called baby killers.

            • Charlie Foxtrot says:

It wasn’t just the 70’s, it began in the 60’s and lasted well past the end of the war in Vietnam, in fact, in 1979, while traveling in uniform, I sat in a bar in the airport in Indianapolis, IN (GOP –Hometown USA) and was called a baby-killer by several patrons, however, the bartender did throw those patrons out, so the balance was set — bottomline, some people will always remain ignorant when given the chance, we have to be better than that and always speak against ignorance. I strive to respect others opinions, what I rail against is blind regurgitation of obvious BS campaign rhetoric.

            • blah blah black sheep says:

So that’s the only thing we’ve learned from Vietnam? That we should treat our soldiers better when they got off the plane?

              • Charlie Foxtrot says:

no, we learned several things. First, fight a war to win the war. Whenever possible, use overwhelming force (Something Bush 41 did, but Bush 43 failed to do), have a clear exit strategy (something Bush 41 did, but Bush 43 failed to do), expand the military to achieve national goals (something Bush 43 had no clue about).

                • Charlie Foxtrot says:

But then again, I really don’t like Bush 43, in case no one noticed.

                  • blah blah black sheep says:

When I say “we” I mean the current administration.

                    • eddiepscetti says:

No, that is not what you meant and it’s clear in the reply you posted. Otherwise you would have add something of substancial value that would have given us an idea of what you were referring to.

                      • blah blah black sheep says:

Please tell me what I meant, then.

                        • Charlie Foxtrot says:

I think the point was that we don’t know what you meant. (spoken by the king of obscurity — me).

                        • eddiepscetti says:

Thank you, I bow to the King but I ain’t kissing no ring!

                        • blah blah black sheep says:

Now who’s being obscure? What the heck is a kissing ring?

And I meant both long term care for veterans, and getting involved in difficult foreign wars without a clear exit strategy. Both. I meant I see a lot of lip ervice paid to veterans without anything substantial to back it up. Mental health care for soldiers with PTSD, rehab for those who are dealing with physical disabilities, affordable life insurance and tax breaks… but then I also believe we should invest in non life-threatening yet still fundamentally valuable occupations – like paying teachers more.

                        • eddiepscetti says:

Well thank you for something of substance! The ring reference was to when a ’subject’ comes before a king, they bow and kiss the royal ring on his finger. As for the balance of what you wrote, you are absolutely correct on every point, especially about teachers pay. I find it amazing that in a society that places so much value on knowledge, and that the education of children is given lipservice, teaching should be the priority. But, that doesn’t mean that the U.S. is the only country that pays teachers crap wages. I currently live in Australia and they are paid the same lowly wage. As for veterans, I think part of the problem is the quality of doctors that provide services to the vets. Not to say all are bad, but in my experience, those that couldn’t hack it in the real world found an easy ticket with the military. I know that sounds like a broad brush, but the truth is, most (not all) doctors in the military aren’t worth a damn. Thus, you get poor quality health care for the vet.

                        • Charlie Foxtrot says:

Hear, hear Black Sheep and Eddie. Alas, we might all be in agreement. Do we truly support soldiers when we send them off to war, yet don’t really support their famlies as they struggle bck home? What many Americans do not realize is that during the “Peace Dividends” of the 90’s drawdown, the first things cut were military base support operations, especially family support items, so when we deployed our underpaid soldiers, multiple times, the base support that used to be there in the past, no longer exists. As far as the medical support, I’ve found both the active military medicl system nd the VA system to be adequate, no the best, but far from the worst. The problem with this conflict is the unprecedented use of reserve copmponent forces. WHen they return home, ther is no structure to support them since they are not on military bses, nor near VA facilities.

                        • jellybeans says:

I work with teachers and every year things get just a little bit tighter in the classroom and just a little bit harder to reach the kids. I agree that education should be one of the priorities of the next administration.
So, we have Obama who wants to improve education making our kids meet the growing standards of a competitive world market … or McCain who ummm … has he said anything about education?

                        • Jane St.Clair says:

Well, he wants to eliminate the Dept. of Education, does that count?

                  • eddiepscetti says:

That’s ok, I don’t think you’re in the minority on that one. Otherwise, everything you outlined in regards to Bush 41 and Bush 43 is correct. And a lot of that has to do with the fact that Bush 41 was in a war that had a clear objective. I’m sure he brought those hard fought lessons with him to the Presidency.

                    • Charlie Foxtrot says:

                      True.

                    • lol says:

Another factor may have been that the UN and other world forces played a bigger role in the first Iraq war than the second, possibly leading to clearer objectives overall.

                      • Charlie Foxtrot says:

Oh, most definately. WHen you bring many nations together for such an effort, you have to clearly define what you want to accomplish and how you will know when it is accomplished. It also makes it less personal, more businesslike.

            • jellybeans says:

The fact that McCain would have seen it first hand happening to his friends and brothers in arms and yet STILL does nothing to help makes it even worse in my eyes.
The fact that he was tortured himself and approves it’s use on others makes him even worse in my eyes.
The fact that he was attacked by terrible lies and slanderous ads himself and yet now has put out ads of such a sleazy nature that Karl (the fabricator) Rove is saying he has gone too far makes him even worse in my eyes.
The fact that he has filled his campaign with the very lobbyists he is supposed to be fighting against if he is elected makes him even worse in my eyes.
              -
The man is a hypocrite of the very first order.

              • Charlie Foxtrot says:

I am truly disappointed in Sen McCain, for all that you have mentioned above. I could have voted for him, but won’t.

              • lol says:

My biggest disappointment is all his attack and slander ads. They’ve doomed the election to nonstop back and forth mudslinging. I was hoping for better.

              • jellybeans says:

I literally spit coffee on my keyboard this morning when I saw Rove was saying McCain went to far … that is like Vlad the Impaler taking you aside to talk about how you are too mean to messengers

          • lol says:

There are many good things about this country but that doesn’t mean people should sit on their laurel, chanting “USA number ONE!!” We all should be striving to create a country that is better for everyone.

            • blah blah black sheep says:

I don’t understand why it has to be so black and white. Owning up to mistakes is part of being a responsible. And responsibility is the flip side of freedom.

              • lol says:

I think some people see owning up to mistakes as acknowledging weakness. Maybe it’s gotten worse because of our litigious society.

          • I_Tego_Arcana_Dei says:

Was that question directed towards me?

You basically added more to my list :(

I didn’t say I didn’t love my country, I’m just not proud of it in it’s current state. Did that come across wrong my first go around? I was trying to defend and show understanding for Mrs. Obama’s comment that the Admiral refferred to.

Love ya jellybeans, your comments always make me smile, and I agree with them probably like 85% of the time.

            • jellybeans says:

:-) The question was a general one, not directed at you in the slightest.
I think in general we have a great country but there are things we need to fix. It is like having a great house that needs a new roof and maybe some plumbing and wiring work.
So far Republican candidates seem happy with a coat of paint.
We need to take on the tougher, messier tasks of improving education and promoting tolerance. We need to rework social programs to cost less while providing more benefits. I believe that is possible, there is a lot of waste. We need to decrease the need for welfare programs without hurting those who truly do need our help. You remember the old slogan – A hand up, not a hand out. Make that work again.
Look at the military budgets not with an eye to diminish safety of the nation but look to cut the wasteful spending. Move that money to other programs.
Keep up with intelligence efforts but respect the privacy of our citizens.
These are thing Obama wants to bring to the ticket. McCain wants to “Drill baby Drill” and cut oil company taxes even more … because we all know Exxon needs a hand out…

          • YDFOC says:

If America is soooo bad, why do millions of people break the law every year sneaking in here from other countries ? Some of them die trying.

          • ema says:

I am deeply ashamed that our politicians obviously think so little of our intelligence that they expected we would accept Obama’s credentials.

          • DeathWyrmNexus says:

Ya, I personally have yet to see Pride as a quality worth voting for. Where has Bush’s pride gotten us? Hell for the bible thumping jackasses, isn’t Pride a deadly sin? Hell, a person proud of what we are right now has no business in office. Pride means you are satisfied. I am not satisfied.

            Vote DW.

        • dontpanic says:

That was quite possibly the best summing up of how America appears to other countires that I’ve read yet. ‘I’m not proud to be an American at the moment either. We’re a shit country with shit values, and shit leaders.’ – but not shit people, as you yourself have shown, especially in saying that you’re trying to make a difference. I’ve seen a lot of arrogance coming from Americans, especially with this looming election. I don’t understand how so many people can say their country is in a terrible state, then talk down every other country as inferior. There is no best country in the world, there are several great ones, and I believe I’m very fortunate to live in the one I do. There is no denying America’s global influence is huge, but look at the population you have compared to other countries. I believe all America needs to do to be a whole lot greater is to stop complaining and blaming, and move on from “this sucks, who can we sue/attack/invade?” to say “ok, this sucks, lets fix it”. You’re a country with a lot of people with their hearts in the right place, all you gotta do is move on a little.

    • Charlie Foxtrot says:

She’s the modern, GOP, conservative Barbie, you know where wives have no sexual attraction, they are simply two-dimensional eye candy, unless they are running mates. (Remember, conservatives reserve “hotness” for their mistresses, or underage interns, or whatever).

      • jellybeans says:

or running mates … to hear them tell it.

      • Jane St.Clair says:

From what I understand, Cindy McCain could care less that her husband is running for president. When asked a direct question her response is usually “I’m not the candidate” which is true as far as it goes, but I think the public has the right to know more about someone who is so close to a man who might become president.

        • jellybeans says:

She is a strong supporter of charities and she had the strength to overcome drug addiction. She allowed him to call her demeaning names and she took up with a man married to a crippled wife … Aside from that I know nothing about her.
PS – I lead with the nice stuff on purpose.

          • Jane St.Clair says:

According the NPR (I know, I know, communist radio, but I love it) they were interviewing someone who had written an article on Cindy McCain. Her mother was also a second wife to a man who started dating her when he was still married and Cindy McCain has at least one if not two half sisters, however she refers to herself as an only child. During her father’s funeral, Cindy gave the eulogy and stated she was an only child, when her father’s other daughter (and her half sister) was sitting in the front row. Cindy inherited the bulk of her father’s fortune and her half sisters only got about ten thousand dollars. Additionally, before her father’s death he was paying for the college education of his granddaughter (the daughter of one of his other kids, and Cindy’s niece). After his death there were no provisions in his will to continue paying for the girls school, and Cindy, who inherited the most did not continue it either. I know that much of this is the fault of Cindy McCain’s father, and not her own, however I think it is pretty cold to refer to yourself as an only child when your sister is right there. You are right in that I can not fault her for her charity work, however. Sometimes it’s easier to extend kindness to strangers then to your own family (not to mention that it looks good in the society papers).
            -
This ended up being a lot longer than I thought, and now I know I’m going to get people crying for sources, so give me a few minutes and I’ll track down the article.

Okay, I found it. This is a link to NPR’s website (I’m gonna try and be PK cool and put it in my name) and you can listen to the interview with Ariel Levy, who wrote the article for the New Yorker, and you can link to the article yourself. Enjoy! ;)
