…but, as I remarked above, neither was classical Athens, or even Rome, by many accounts – but they were not politically stable over the course of a human life span, which is more or less what one looks for in a republic, isn’t it?
But the US has been politically stable, for more than a human life span? People are free to leave at any time as well, so it’s not a real comparision, or am I missing something?
(just to clarify that last point: I mean that Athens, though not -horter-/ived than an average person, could not predict its political stability over the average lifespan with any great certainty. In fact, Athenean democracy lasted 170 years(wiki), so any given citizen alive at the time of or born after its establishment would have roughly a 29% chance (69 / (170 + 69) * 100, for a historical/y generous 70 year life span) of outliving the republic, which is rather too high for my taste.)

What civilizations do you know of that never had slavery, or a working class that lasted longer? I myself would love to have lived tribally, but even they had to work to gather food, make clothing etc. The work was more relevant and probably more meaningful to survival. The relationships were probably more intense and meaningful. Anyone that didn’t work was usually tossed out.

I was young when I got mine and didn’t have much credit, I didn’t need a co-signer. Nothing is going to be easy, there are hurdles for some but nothing that can’t be overcome in most case. Anyway the loans are government sponsored, what more can the government do? Walk over to your house and hand you the money? There are other options besides college anyway.

In their defense, however, just try to picture where this sign was made. Trying to hand-print 4 inch lettered signs while lots of people are talking to you can be pretty challenging, and once you’ve printed it, it just looks right.

Funny thing is, these signs are MADE by the RNC and handed out at the convention and stump speeches. I saw more than one sign that night watching the RNC that said MAVRICK (not the correct spelling).
