EPIC DEAD GUY!
oh LOL weeeeeeee that was funny.
Heeheehee…
Homer: “Come on, Dewey!”
Lisa: “I’m telling you, Dad. Truman wins.”
History Channel: “The headlines proclaim Dewey defeats Truman!”
Homer: “Woohoo!”
History Channel:”…But the headlines are dead wrong!”
Epic PWN indeed.
I bet that guy felt REEEEALLY smart when he found out the news….
THIRD lol :>
I love this particular historic faux pas.
Gore Defeats Bush!
Bush Defeats Gore!
Recounts enter 20th week, old retirees continue to fumble and cause the vote to swing either way at random!
Now here’s something on which we all can agree–whichever side wins–election results people don’t feel confident in just aren’t funny.
There is probably a disgustingly large number of people who wouldn’t get this joke.
Like me. =/
sigh.
1948 election. what happened was, truman got his buddy Joseph Kennedy to build a time machine, and they went back to hunt some dinosaurs, but ole Joe stepped on a butterfly, and all of reality warped on itself to where giant flying monkeys took over the planet. So then… (people grab wittypirate and force much needed meds down his throat)
That could have happened.
Or it could have been that the newspaper was relying on a telephone poll that heavily declared Dewey would win. They wanted to get the scoop so they went to print before the votes were counted. The problem: In 1948, poor people didn’t have phones, so they were never polled, skewing the results. All the poor and lower middle class voted for Truman, resulting in statistical pwnage.
Always use a proper population sample, kids!
Like all these land-line phone polls declaring the two candidates neck-and-neck
(wattles), not realizing that a significant portion of the younger demographic are solely cell?
Are you implying, sir, that younger voters are one-celled organisms analogous to amoebae?? That would explain a lot.
I’m more of a paramecium myself.
Oh, uh, that thing where the phone polling was improperly handled? was actually the 1936 election with Alf Landon.
The 1948 election, seriously, it went to Truman because Dewey punted the campaign, and because the defections by the commies and the racists from the Democrats that year actually helped Truman rather than pull too many votes away.
Considering I’m not American, I feel absolutely no shame in not getting the joke
Neither am I, but I’ve known this one for years.
I was under the impression that those living in America (myself included) and thus educated by the american school system had no clue about american history while those living in other countries and thus educated by a higher quality school system had a full grasp on not only their own country’s history but of American history as well.
Huh, you learn something new every day.
“you learn something new every day.”
Unless you’re being educated by the American school system.
Win.
Try it this way.
If you ask any American, Canadian, Englishman, Australian, German, etc who the first president of the US was. They will know it was Washington.
If you ask an Australian who the first Prime Minister of Australia was, the odds are not good that you’d manage an answer out of them. I have a feeling that the same is true in the UK for their first Prime Minister, and other leaders of other countries.
Yes, but the American one has the advantage of only being 200 years old, where all the other countries are much older!
Canada is definitely not older than the US. And our first PM was Sir John A. MacDonald. He’s on the five-dollar bill. Nyeah.
So who was the first American president?
Am I on the politics + news site, or the fails site?
This one would have qualified as “Epic Journalism FAIL”, yes!
DING!
I’m assuming it is a whole ‘Bush Thing’, decades before.
‘Democracy… like it REALLY WORKS!’
Not since Athens.. no. wait.. not even THEN…..
‘An acceptable fiction’ .. though it would seem….
But Ignore me… I’m jaded…
Democracy is the best we have. It ain’t perfect, but it’s better than any alternative.
Then why is it that Americans never score near the top on “happiness Polls” that rate the satisfaction of ordinary citizens?
What would you suggest as a better alternative to democracy?
I think Walt Whitman said it best: “Democracy is a horrible, inefficient form og government. The only thing that can be said in it’s defense is it’s a thousand times better than anything else man has come up with.”
I might have misquoted slightly, but that’s the gist of it.
Your quote by Whitman supports EP’s Burnt Toast’s position. What else is there that’s better?
Robotocracy?
A federal republic? Oh, wait…
ANARCHY!!!!
because we americans are a bunch of whining pussies that have everything but still aren’t satisfied.
that’s why.
Yep, thats why Obama is so popular.
Unbelievably snarky, immature, and uncalled for.
Wow, you really have it out for me don’t you? I never see you calling out any other poster on this board who says anything snarky or mean about McCain, McCains wife, Sarah Palin, Bush, Cheney… the list goes on. I’m sure you will have an excellent reason why… Thanks.
That explains why he replied so fast.
Denmark scores at the top. Mmm, danish girls…
oh danish girls… how chauvinistic…
Well, sorry, Danish boys just don’t do it for me
Cheese danish does it for me. I’m just saying…
Mmmmmmmmm! Cheese!
Girl with Cheese Danishes=My future wife
Sorry Kurt, you know superheroes can’t get married.
I like the lemon danishes.
Denmark was a democracy last time I checked.
Yep, a Democracy operating in a heavily regulated capitalist system that people of a certain party (AHEM!) like to mischaracterize as a “Socialist State”.
I will leave it as an exercise for the student to determine which party that is
Whaddya mean, “no free market in plutonium?”!?
Lol.
And the other countries that do are not democracies?
Americans aren’t happy because they work themselves to the bone and go into debt for stupid materialistic goals. New car, new ipod, new house, new cell phone. A whole bunch of shit that only satisfies them until the next purchase like junkies on a fix.
bingo! people would be much happier if they just learn to live with what they have, happiness does not come from things, in my opinion happiness is a decision you make
Agreed.
Why do you hate America?
Oh that was very well done, thank you.
And some people work to themselves to the bone just to get by and has nothing to do with materialistic things.
no cause to get by, said person needs materials to continue living so wether its stuff we want or stuff we need its still true
I’ve heard quite the opposite, honestly. America ranks as one of the happiest countries, statistically. Aside from most of the sue-happy ones, Happy Americans has become a stereotype of sorts.
Begs the question ‘Do we have democracy?’
What’s really sad is Dewey COULD have won had he not tried to sit on the fence with the issues.
Like Obama ?
change my ass
We tried change, complete with the slogan and a young black man (who isn’t half-white) here in Mass. Not so good, actually. Please keep the change. We don’t want it here any more.
Why, is your diaper wet?
You beat me to it! XD
No. seriously. Everyone thought he was going to win. The problem was, he spoke in platitudes with no real substance.. oh, yeah, like Obama.
Respectfully, if you think there was no substance, you missed his address at the close of the Democratic Convention.
Or his website, which detailed many of his plans at great length.
It’s much simpler to live your life with your eyes and ears covered and only Fox News to spoonfeed you “facts”.
As they say, the proof is in the pudding.. if he gets elected and does a great job, then I will give him kudos for it and will retract every negative thing I may have said about him. Until then, he’s a great speechgiver but at the moment, that’s all he is.
Fair enough. I hope you get the opportunity to give him his kudos.
People overlook that Truman had the Republican Dream-team of Patton and Glenn Miller eliminated in ‘accidents’ so they couldn’t be a threat in’48…
You seriously believe that?
While there have been conspiracy theories about the death of Patton (though “Truman had him iced” is a new one on me), I think the reference to Big Band leader and “Chattanooga Choo-Choo” conductor Glenn Miller indicates this is a joke….a somewhat obscure joke, but a joke nonetheless.
Thats my great uncle. =/
Epically unnecessary caption.
