As for the small business owner, well, if the owner can’t afford to pay a decent wage, then he’ll just have to do the bloody work himself. How horrible.

Pfft.

One should never jump into a business thinking that they have some absolute right to have underpaid wage-slaves doing their bidding, just because they started the business. If you don’t want to do the work yourself, don’t start the business. Hire help when you can afford it. Plain and simple.

Kick married an Episcopalian, and back in those days this was a scandalous thing for a Catholic to do, and the family was not allowed to attend–But big Brother Joe defied the rule and attended anyway, But it was not a “shackup”. It was legal.

Rosemary died…in the 1990s, IIRC. I believe she was in her 70s or 80s.

Really, their mother Rose made it to 105–the siblings who died…well, Joe Jr kind of brought it on himself (that mission was a bad idea from the get-go), Kick and her shack-up BF should have known better than to fly in bad weather (and Rose thought it was God’s punishment for Kick’s behavior), and JFK and RFK were sheer stupid bad luck and criminal lack of planning on the Secret Service’s part in the first case. Teddy did dodge the plane bad luck–he survived a small-plane crash, and after Chappaquidick he seemed to get a bit more of clue and realize he’s the head of the family and better start acting like it. The other girls weren’t known for reckless behavior.

Hahaha! The cat food companies made me laugh. As my parents are getting older I really worry about them living well. They’re lucky in that my dad worked at Raytheon all his life and has a good pension from that, and when they sell the house I grew up in, they’ll have a pretty penny, but they’re staunch supporters of Social Security and health care for everyone. Now that my dad is retired, he can still use his company’s health insurance, but they won’t cover my mom anymore!

And good on you for that, but also having grants and student loans isn’t the same as living solely on minimum wage. I just put myseld through grad school, primarily on loans.
Also, Obama’s tax plans are meant to stimulate small businesses and start ups. I fully admit that the Kennedys are filthy rich and haven’t really experienced the life of the average working joe, but neither have most republicans and most politicians for that matter, including McCain. Obama may be well to do now, but both he and his wife worked their way up from relative poverty, with the help of scholarships etc.

Trust me, I’m trying my damndest. I have a strict budget I adhere to, and it’s still difficult. It would probably be better if I had a more consistent part time gig, but even then, I remember a time where a full-time job was supposed to be able to carry you.

But Obama is going to do away with the capital gains tax on small businesses … That should free up some money for wages.
More people making better money means more people able to pay for products means less people on public assistance means more money for other programs and social security means more elderly people able to live lives of dignity means more money back into the market.
Only loser I see here is cat food companies when little old ladies can afford to buy decent food for themselves.

There is a HUGE difference between an older guy tapping your butt in passing and him jumping on you and violating you.
Kennedy knew my dad back when they were on opposite sides of the aisle, my dad was one of the executives that was called in on some sort of pilot program to help Nixon when he first was elected. They were both New England boys and lived fairly close to each other (though a world away in economic geography) They got along well despite political arguments so Kennedy would come and say hi now and then if he saw my dad out even years later.
The ass-pattery wasn’t sexual or demeaning any more than if my dad had done it.

No, I paid rent and worked my way through college – dont like dorms. I had the basic grants everyone gets and the rest were student loans. I would never have dreamed of having any children until I had a way to earn more than minimum wage… I know others don’t always have that option and accidents happen but why drive all the small businesses out of business because they have to pay more and more for the workers and they cant make any kind of profit?? They are just going to raise their prices and the cycle continues. I wouldn’t want any rich person paying for me, I made it on my own and *most* other folks can too. I am the only one in my family to go to and finish college btw, I had no support from anyone.

You are in one of the higher paying industries now Ema.
When you were “making a living on minimum wage” were you living alone? going to school? Living with the folks?
Try being a single parent making minimum wage or try being a 2 parent household trying to take care of kids in an economy where milk casts $4.00 a gallon while you make minimum wage. An hour’s work won’t buy you a gallon of milk and a dozen eggs. We are talking staples. Why do kids now eat crappy junk food? Because it is the only thing that is still cheap enough for minimum wage workers to feed their kids.
Perhaps your minimum wage days were subsidized by college meal plans, laundry at home and no rent to speak of?

In what state? Because in California, even the state minimum wage makes living on minumum wage near impossible, your quality of life sucks. And federal minimum wage, that can’t support you anywhere. Something tells me Mr. Joe Factory owner or Mr. Walmart executive can pay all his workers a liveable wage and still get by with more than enough.

Seriously ema, and this isn’t just directed at you, but have you taken the time to read Obama’s biographies and his book, Audacity of Hope, to learn about all the work he did in the state senate before coming to Washington? Have you read things that his colleagues, republican and democrats alike have said about him? Plus I defy anyone to watch Obama’s speech from last night and say the man isn’t presidential.
I have respect for any woman who professes strong opinions and I don’t think you’re a dummy by any means. We will probably never agree on most things. It’s certainly impressive that at 44, Palin, a woman with 5 kids, is a governer. Still doesn’t convince me that she’s VP material.
