Technically, we vote for the party. And whichever party has the most members/seats gets their pick for PM. It is like a better version of the electoral college, where we don’t lump states together and those who we elect aren’t irrelevant as soon as we know who is PM.
Also, that PM is like a figurehead. He doesn’t really have any greater powers than any other elected minister, of any party.

It’s not that bad. What most people do is just pick the party they agree with most and tick the box next to their name. It is almost certainly the minority which carefully order their preferences themselves.
The rough correlation in votes, is that if you vote Republican, then you would either vote Liberal or National (it make no difference since
they team up in the end anyway). If you vote Democrat, then you would either vote Labor or Greens here, depending on how far left you considered yourself.

A major advantage of how we do things, is that we don’t vote for the President or other leader with all sorts of political powers. We just vote for
who will represent us locally, and they represent the area for three years.

From most votes at the last federal election to least:
Labor (43%), Liberal (37%), Greens (8%), National (5%),

The Liberal Party _is_ the conservatives. Their actual liberal policies are limited to economic policies (much similar to Republicans).

attack ‘liberals’ for things that are distinctly not liberal. It would be far more accurate to call these ‘liberals’ Democrats instead.
Here in Australia, the major right wing party is the Liberal Party. The Liberal Party here agrees with most of the policy points of the Republican Party.

No, businesses do not “provide” jobs. Business owners have an idea, they don’t want to actually make it happen, so they pay someone else to do the work. They make money in the difference between what they pay the worker, the cost of doing business and what they can charge the consumer. And guess what, investments are not a guarantee — why do you think that social security was invented to begin with? It was invented because private investment for retirement failed. It was a scam that we went through once before — result? The Great Depression. That is one of my main points. Back to the beginning of this interesting deviation, most liberals and conservatives believe in self relience and personal responsiblity. We differ in how we apply the principles.

it’s not that hard to figure out which businesses provide the jobs or keep the economy afloat so investments like 401k’s do not fail. Do you have a retirement account? Want to depend on social security? I don’t, I would like to have it grow and be worth something someday. Is there corruption in business, of course there is! There will always be, but there is also corruption in the government especially when big money is involved. Business does not provide jobs? Who does??

You cannot have it both ways. You said conservatives don’t believe in government giving them stuff, but you don’t mind giving really rich sports club owners stuff, because they may “provide” jobs. Personal Opinion — Business’s do not “provide” jobs, they simply exchange money for services that the owners prefer not to do themselves so they hire the BS out and try to make more money selling the services than actually doing them.

Well, it’s probably more efficient to use government resources to help businesses which provide jobs and keeps the economy from collapsing sending people into the streets and ruining 401k accounts. I bet keeping sports venues in a community helps local economies. I do give generously to charities of *my* choice and I encourage others to give as well. The government taking my money and doing what they decide is going to help people with it does not make me comfortable at all. I don’t believe leaving things like that to the government to decide is being responsible. CEO salaries and perks do seem outrageous but so do salaries for sports stars or Hollywood types, I don’t know what can be done about that in a free country.
