Really? They are in desert pattern clothes, meaning they will probably deploy to a desert area. As they said here, try being a conscripted farmer sleeping in your tent at camp, when all of a sudden all these bastards come out of nowhere, start shooting and all you can see is that lightning pattern in their face, the white in their eyes and their weapons discharging... I'd piss and crap my pants and run home screaming to my mommy. Most importantly, word spreads and the enemy will begin to fear these "devils." Like hergieburbur said, psy-ops.

Some Celts also were purported to induce erections to scare their enemies. Cuchulainn, the famous Irish hero, as well as many others, would go into a frenzy such as a rapid animal would, foaming at the mouth and stopped only by freezing water after the battle.
The Berserks or Berserkers (Scandinavians) would wear bear or wolf skins and fall into a sort of possessed trance (the berserkergang), in which a berserker could rip a man's jugular vein out with his teeth; they supposedly had the strength of a bear or wolf and an indiscriminate violence.
Other intimidation tactics were often more complex, technological developments. The horse, the chariot, gunpowder, the gun, the bayonet, the mace, the cannon, the flail, the tank, chain mail, the sword, the katana, the wakizashi, chain shot (cannonballs connected by a chain), cannister shot (a cannonball filled with smallershot pieces that would explode and spray out; extremely dangerous), mustard gas, tear gas, the atomic and hydrogen bombs, the missile, napalm, Agent Orange, and the rocket are all examples of effective scare tactics. Of course, once a scare tactic has been introduced, it begins to lose its power as an enemy comes to expect it. That is how the chariot took thousands of years to be replaced, the cannon and the wakizashi less than a thousand, and the bayonet hundreds.
Some tactics, however, are so psychologically or physically detrimental that an enemy never loses fear. The kamikazes of WWII, the hijackers of 9/11, and the suicide bombers of today are an example of an impossible psychological challenge. How can you fight an enemy who is willing to die by being blown into a million pieces? Mustard gas, napalm, Agent Orange, and the hydrogen and atomic bombs are no longer used in warfare because it is widely agreed that they are too destructive and inhumane, and the consequences last far too long.
One incident, though, has remained unmatched in the history books for sheer chaotic fear.
Vlad the Impaler (Vlad III Dracula), when faced with an apparent defeat by the Ottoman Turks created a massive field of thousands of Turkish soldiers (previously captured during the war campaign) impaled on wooden stakes, some through the mouth and anus, others simpy through the stomach. Shah-in Shah's forces reached the area, saw the mass execution, and never returned.

I LOVE the PACK! Even though I never lived there, I have since the mid sixty's when I actually was old enough to pay attention -- they were THE team. Stayed loyal since then, and even though Bret was and remains awesome... I'm stayin wit the boyz.. I wish him the best, and having retired from a professio that I loved, I understand the feelings of loss, and more power to him...hope he does well until he comes up against the Pack... then he is the enemy!

Yeah, Celts, Native Americans, that recently photographed tribe of Red people in Brazil...lots of tribal cultures used face and body paints to strike fear into their enemies.

Part of it is in dress. If you look and act like a demon, you can be perceived that way - especially against a culture that doesn't not practice such tactics. Imagine being a conscripted farmer from France who was told to boat over to England and fight and suddenly you have a huge, war-painted, screaming, axe-weilding Celt bearing down on top of you. You'd probably wet your breeches and run like hell. Samurai in Japan did it with demonic face masks instead of paint, but the result on conscripted peasants was much the same when an armored, mounted, demonic-looking enemy rode down on you.

Part of it is self-psychology. If you look and act like a demon, you start to feel like one. You are getting your own adrenaline going and fall into character. Especially if everyone on your "team" is reinforcing the illusion for you.

And part of it is psychology that you have nothing to lose. Some Celts fought naked. And while that seems (and is) stupid in most cases, when a naked man, painted up like hell-come-to-Earth is charging you, it is like saying to you "I will not turn back, I will fight until I die, and even if you have armor and better weapons, I am not scared of you. I will get amongst you and kill you." And to a soldier, an enemy willing to go to that extreme IS scary, even when you are better armed.
Sun Tzu often proposed smashing an army's cooking pots and burning camping gear prior to battle to tell the enemy the same thing: we can't go back now, we need supplies, we're taking them from you. There is no retreat for us. We are determined and the only direction for us to go is through you.

So, yeah, face-painting traditions go way, way back in warfare.

So you start out by saying that you don't care about football much, and then lecture those of us that do about how they will do this year? Also, Thompson doesn't manage the business side of things, Murphy does. Thompson is only responsible for the football side of things, and I happen to disagree with the way he handled things here. I admitted that Favre is a prima dona, but he also holds nearly every major passing record in the NFL, and gives them the best chance to win this year. Rodgers or Brohm would be the better long term decision, but because of the way the front office handled the situation, they may not be around long-term if Rodgers doesn't work out short term. For the record, regardless of the way the announcers spun it, Rodgers looked kinda bad on Monday. He under/over threw a lot of receivers, and they rescued him, which you can't count on against a real defense.

I have lived in Green Bay my whole life never more than 10 miles from the
stadium. I'll admit i really don't care about football much compared to a
die-hard fan (i'm 20, and i've only seen one scrimmage and i handed out yellow pom-poms at the gate when i was 10), but when it comes to the Brett Favre drama. He retired, he had 17 good years, he is DAMN LUCKY that he can actually WALK off the field with GOOD KNEES.
A few years back he didn't sign his contract till like the first game of the pre-season.
All this is is drama.
Sure i don't care much for Ted Tompson, but jeez guys its a sport and a
business, and not everyone can manage a company as big as the Packers
Franchise.
And as far as Aaron Rodgers goes, he will be a fine QB even if it takes him
year or two to settle in.

Oh, and go ahead and bash Wisconsin, I'll just laugh at the fact that you people have no clue what you're doing when you arrive at a place that doesn't have a Starbucks at every corner and people like me can walk around New York like it sour back yard.

Yeah I'm that confident I wouldn't get lost in New York.

I cried when I found out he was coming back. His integrity is shot to hell. He's the only sports "hero" I've ever had--or wanted to have--because he's such a good guy and has a great work ethic and true love for the game. Now, he just seems selfish and inconsiderate to me.

Uh, merely knowing that WI is just Wisconsin's acronym doesn't really make you a Wisconsin insider - it just makes you a student of geography :L Trying to turn that into some kind of secret club just makes Wisconsin seem even more boring than I originally imagined.

The Packers are stupid. Sure Brett put them in a dodge position with coming back from retirement, but they should have known better than to do/say what they did when he decided to come back. You just don't alienate someone of his talent and history with the club. He's not just a legend of their team, he's a legend of the game as a whole. They begged him to come back in years past because they DIDN'T have an Aaron Rodgers - but now suddenly they treat him like he's the NEXT Brett Favre, nevermind the fact that you HAD Brett Favre (regardless of his age, he was coming off one of his best seasons of his career). They should have traded Aaron Rodgers out (probably could have received the same prospects if not better, due to his expected longevity - being as young as he is) and groomed Brian Brohm for 2 years to take over the QB position while Brett was in the drivers seat.

NOT TOO DAMN HARD. Rodgers better have a sweet year - a year better than Favre, because frankly if he doesn't - Ted Thompson will lose his job and the Packers will always look like fools (like they did for YEARS before Brett Favre arrived there from Atlanta).

Semi-Pack fan here, not a fan of their front office. I think they all just gambled their jobs on an unproven kid who has not been overly impressive in the action he has seen, and has shown himself to be injury prone. They have zero NFL starts in their QB stable. But yeah, they are better off without one of the best QBs in history, prima dona or not.

First....what is this?

Second...WI (Wisconsin for you outsiders) Packer fan right here, honestly I want to see the new team play, he should have retired and stayed there cause that would have saved his honor. Now if they would have had the '96 team forever, that would be nice.
