It is a very technical exercise called “unloading empty shotgun shells from a shotgun.”

It’s a double barrel break-action shotgun (think Elmer Fudd). When it’s opened, it ejects the shells automatically to make room for the 2 new ones you’ll presumably be inserting next.
And when you’ve used one enough to make it into the Olympics, snatching the spent shells out of midair is probably a piece of cake. Damn nice photo to catch it with the smoking shells and all, tho.

Nope! You actually pull ‘em out using that part if the shells fail to eject automatically.
Thank you for Burphel for the explanation. I didn’t know that shotguns had an eject feature. I was trying to figure WTF was going on. Even though I love the whole Jedi angle in the pic. The upraised hand make it look real cool.

Hmmm… Looks like a Canada cap so I am going to guess it is young Mr. Giuseppe Di Salvatore from Vancouver. From CBC’s website: “Only 18, he’s Canada’s top male trap shooter. Di Salvatore is a teenager competing in a sport where athletes typically peak in their 30s. He’ll likely be the youngest shooter at the Beijing Olympic Games.”
