1,000 years of war!

We get it. McCain is a hawk. It never was and probably will not ever be that funny.
“Those who would give up essential liberty to purchase a little temporary safety deserve neither liberty nor safety.”
–Benjamin Franklin, Historical Review of Pennsylvania, 1759
US author, diplomat, inventor, physicist, politician, & printer (1706 – 1790)
McSame is hilarious, and so is this Pundit Kitchen caption! FTW
A talking point has been glued to a generic picture. Did that honestly make you laugh?
Yes… its funny because its true
Actually it’s a lie. McCain never said 100 years of war, much less 1,000.
But then, liberals have to use lies in their talking points, because the truth favours Republicans.
Chill… who do you think they learned it from? Some cheese with that whine? ;o)
And sorry, after Regan let the loonies in Reps and the truth have increasingly become mutually exclusive concepts. If there was still a Republican party as originally intended I’d be the first to sign up, but the crap that is out there right now just makes me want to puke. Honestly… this constantly giving other people crap and then run to mommy bitching because you can’t stand the response gets to me. Show some f’ing self respect.
I’m pretty sure the Republicans didn’t invent the lying slogan. Politics has been going on for thousands of years before Reagan, you know.
And I might be a Democrat, except for all the loonies they let in after the sixties. Identity politics is evil, and the whole Left revolves around it now.
No, but the Reps pretty much perfected the industry of character assassination and the term swiftboating has not been invented to describe something the Democrats did.
If you look at a conceivable legitimate spectrum of democratic (as in system of government, not party – legitimate meaning reasonably representing the will of the people) the US hardly has a left. I find that worrying not because I am happy with leftist policy prescriptions, but because I see it as a result of demonizing a legitimate political view. Honestly, look at the venom with which people here denounce ‘liberals’. Buy a f’ing dictionary and look up the term. The original meaning is pretty much synonymous with what now is called libertarian and the term liberal is toxic now as a result of a smear campaign.
I am honestly saddened that the political discussion (as in exchange of ideas with the aim of learning something – a thing scientists do) has degraded to a political debate (where everything goes and it is not about what ideas are right, but who is the last man standing – that is, who is most loud and obnoxious.
In the US the right (particularly the religious kind) is driving this development with the pathetic habit of forming an opinion first and looking at the facts later. Funnily in Europe it is the other way round and equally regrettable.
The term ’swiftboating’ is itself a lie. The Swift Boat Veterans did nothing but reveal the truth about Senator Kerry.
If you don’t like venom, focus your criticism on the Left. That’s where mosore re most of the venom comes from, especially on this website.
The lie about McCain in this thread is just one example.
Here is “the truth” according to Wikipedia:
Of the 3,500 Swift boat sailors who served in Vietnam, the names of some 250 appeared on the group’s statement against Kerry; most did not serve at the same time or in the same place as Kerry.[8][9][10] Founding members of SBVT include Rear Admiral Roy Hoffmann (retired), a former commander of Swift boat forces; Houston attorney John O’Neill, an officer who became commander of Swift Boat PCF 94 several months after Kerry’s departure in 1969 and who appeared opposite Kerry in a televised 1971 debate between them on The Dick Cavett Show; and 13 other named veterans. Several of those who joined SBVT during the 2004 campaign were officers who had previously praised Kerry’s conduct during the Vietnam War. These included Division Commander Grant Hibbard, who wrote positive evaluations of Kerry, and Commander George Elliott, who submitted Kerry for a Silver Star. SBVT counts, in total, 16 officers who served with Kerry in Coastal Division 11 as members.[11] Despite SBVT’s statements that Kerry’s “entire chain of command” belonged to the group,[12] Joseph Streuli, former commander of Coastal Division 13, Charles Horne, former commander of Coastal Squadron 1, and Art Price, former commander CTF 116 who is described in Unfit for Command as part of Kerry’s chain of command, are not affiliated with the group.
The group’s initial letter against Kerry stated “It is our collective judgment that, upon your return from Vietnam, you grossly and knowingly distorted the conduct of the American soldiers, marines, sailors and airmen of that war (including a betrayal of many of us, without regard for the danger your actions caused us). Further, we believe that you have withheld and/or distorted material facts as to your own conduct in this war.”[13] However, Kerry had posted over 100 pages of his military records at his website nearly two weeks before the issuance of the SBVT letter, and had also made his military medical records available for inspection by reporters (and provided a summary from his doctor).[14][15][16]
Not all SBVT members said that they were signing the letter for the same reason. For example, from an interview published the day before the letter was made public: ” ‘[Kerry] earned his medals, he did what he was supposed to do in Vietnam,’ said retired Coast Guard Captain Adrian Lonsdale, who was in the chain of command above Kerry and oversaw various operations dealing with Navy swift boats of the type Kerry commanded. ‘But I was very disappointed in his statements after he got out of the Navy.’ “[17]
Of those who served in Kerry’s boat crew, only Stephen Gardner joined SBVT.[18] He was not present on any of the occasions when Kerry won his medals, including his Purple Hearts. Gardner appeared in two of the group’s television advertisements.
All other living members of Kerry’s crew supported his presidential bid, and some frequently campaigned with him as his self-described ‘band of brothers’. Kerry crewmembers have disputed some of SBVT’s various allegations: “totally false” (Drew Whitlow), “garbage” (Gene Thorson), and “a pack of lies” (Del Sandusky).[19][20][21]
No members of SBVT were aboard Kerry’s boat during any of the incidents for which he was decorated. The only member of SBVT who was present at the Silver Star incident, Rood’s crewmember Larry Clayton Lee, praised Kerry’s tactics and stated that he earned his Silver Star; he stated that based on discussions with other SBVT members, he came to question whether Kerry deserved other medals for incidents at which he was not present.
Jane, you ignorant slut.
This further proves my point that women shouldn’t be allowed to the internet. They can often appear to have an informed opinion.
What the hell, are you Jane’s stalker or something? Tell the truth, you harbor secret fantasies of her coming over to your house and tying you up, you crazy freak. At the very least you sound a bit obsessed.
I notice “Evil” Pundit has no rejoinder for facts…
Actually, Kerry put HIMSELF in for three purple hearts- for the sole purpose of getting out of Vietnam ( the rule was if you got three, you got to go home).
Two were tiny trivial injuries, one of which was idiotically self-inflicted when he got hit by shrapnel from a grenade launcher HE fired ! The Swift Boat person who was the medical officer at the time, told Kerry “you must be joking” when Kerry showed him the little scratch on his arm and asked for a Purple Heart.
Both he and the Commanding officer refused to sign paperwork for two of Kerry’s Purple Hearts, yet he later showed up with the medals and still refuses to release his medical records as to who exactly okayed them- if at all.
So outing this lying coward is evil, I guess slamming an ex-POW is good( to the liberals). I was shot in the leg and refused to accept a Purple Heart- I would have felt embarrased to sit next to someone who lost an arm or worse.
The road to Hell is paved with Republicans!
“because the truth favours Republicans.”
now THAT is damn funny!!
This is why I always liked Big Ben. Good Quote.
Yes, keep repeating that loudly enough and maybe you won’t hear all the people laughing at McCain, who should really be over on the failblog because he’s gonna lose in a landslide of epic proportions.
PROTIP: McCain is also REALLY old, LOL!
Keep hating on old people. They vote. =D
But don’t claim to be able to run for office…
Yeah but they aren’t going to vote for someone just cos he’s old too. They are more likely to realise how hard it would be to be an elderly president.
Or to realize how hard it will be to run the entire US government and be Commander in Cheif of the military when all you have 2 minutes of experience compared to John McCain… Obama wants to be trotting around all over the world kibbitzing with madmen dictators and wont even consult with our own generals?? But that is just so cool, isn’t it… Oh yeah, I want that.
Instead of our own homegrown madmen prez? Perhaps we should do more talking and less fighting so there won’t be 1000 more years of war and we won’t go BANKRUPT as a nation and my great great great great great grankids won’t be paying for this F’ed up war. Oh wait, then there would be less $ for Hailburton and it’s subsidiaries. That wouldn’t do…How about a GI Bill for the kids who are actually fighting, or would that cut into the taxes Cheney’s tax bracket DOESN”T pay anyway?
Maybe you should inform yourself about what McCain *actually* said, instead of just repeating that ‘1000 years’ lie that some Democrat told you.
Perhaps Jazz Hands would be more appropriate here.
… he also never said anything close to this. His statement about having troops in Iraq in 100 years was predicated on his prior sentence about them not being killed anymore – like the troops we have in Korea or Japan or Germany…
…where we also shouldn’t be anymore…
Read your history. Remember that whole WWII thing? yeah.
And WWII has been over for over 50 years. There’s also the whole multiple instances of U.S. soldiers raping women near the bases in those countries. What wonderful representatives they are for our country, and how helpful to them! (the wonderful and helpful are sarcastic, and for everyone’s sake, I hope my specifying that is unnecesary)
Most foreign countries where we have troops stationed want our troops to stay. There are isolated cases, especially after a serious crime (which is not higher than the statistical norm) but for the most part they don’t mind us being there.
I know it doesn’t make much sense I have no idea why a foreign country would want a couple of thousand young men with nothing but disposable income to stay in their country but it happens.
I dont know where you get that from… There are a lot of people all ready to accuse US soldiers for things they did not do because they don’t like our country. We have not had a new terror attack in this country since 9/11, is that just a lucky accident? Al quada is on the run and we are succeeding in Iraq.
I think you are missing a big point. There are daily terror attacks on the US. Most of them in Iraq, some in Afghanistan (quite a lot of them bigger than the embassy bombings or the attack in the Cole in the 90s and those caused quite a lot of fuss). Much cheaper that way if you happen to be in the middle east and want to kill Americans.
Also, why should Al-Qaeda spend valuable resources to attack a country that does such a great job terrorizing itself? In any case I don’t see how an attack on the US right now would get them closer to their goal of driving the US out of Saudi Arabia… closer at least than the war in Iraq brought them.
As to the popularity of US troops abroad. The mention of rape most likely refers to some incidents in Japan in the 80s and 90s. I am not aware of any such issues in Europe. There Extraordinary Rendition has f…ed things up royally. And without airbases in Europe the war in Iraq would stop within days.
There was a pretty well documented case of rape by some Airborne troops in Kosovo in either the late 90’s early 2000’s. I can’t recall the exact details right now, must do more research, but I remember it because my brother had just left active duty not long before that and would have been in Kosovo at the same time had he stayed in.
OK… am aware now. kthx
This is not to say that I think this is a result of U.S. troops being stationed anywhere or that I think this behavior is in any way encouraged by the military. I think any time you have a large group of people you have a statistical probability of attracting some people prone to devient behaviors. The young soldiers who commit these crimes would more than likely do the same on their college campus or a bar or a club had they not joined the military. It’s not the fact that they are in the military, nor that they are in a foreign country that has caused it, it only makes it into the news and is more in the public conscience because of those facts.
The service is also allowing people with past criminal histories to join the military given the shortage of new recruits.
I didn’t want to add anything, I just wanted to add another layer of white and gray lines to this already thick discussion.
me too!!!!1!
There are not daily terror attacks in Iraq or Aghanistan – you are quite mad. Where are you getting this from? If there were attacks like that daily the liberal media would be all over that like flies on poopoo. Also, al-kay-da will continue to attack us in anyway it can, it is just not able to because we are not allowing it. IF somehow there is a terrible mistake and Obama gets in office his national security advisor will start reading Whiney The Poo stories to them and they will then kill all of us.
Maybe he can finish the story W was reading about the goat while he’s at it.
And I’m sure W would have been SOOOO useful in the first 10 minutes of the attack when he didn’t know anything more than anyone else did.
Oh noes! He didn’t dash out of the room and wait in his plane for a few hours like everyone wanted him to do!
Keep spouting Liberal Media. Yeah, Fox News, real liberal. Republicans can at least be credited for the BEST PR and sound byte campaigns evah.
OMG, you SO drank the Kool Aid. My sister in law is in the army, we are NOT succeeding in Iraq, we are barely holding our own and the shit is gonna hit the fan AGAIN as soon as we leave. Which brings us back to 1000 years of war. It’s not a “liberal” thing (Evil Pundit – STFU), it’s a common sense thing. Al Queda is not on the run, Afghanistan (yeah, remember that war, too?) is a MESS and we still don’t have Bin Laden. But who cares about that, right? So please, spare me the no new terror attack argument.
1000 years of war is a liberal lie. McCain said no such thing.
You know, that’s the kind of comment I expect from people who ask whether we have electricity and fridges here in Germany.
The people who fought WWII are now either dead or using walking helps. Really dangerous.
Sadly, the voting public just doesn’t have the patience to listen to an entire sentence…
That’s politics for ya.
A caption of the caption should read: “When liberals aren’t funny!”
… and isn’t that all the time?
Cos there’s such a plethora of funny Republicans.
Only to people like you.
Evil Pundit, now that’s supposed to crack us all up?
Obama has NO military experience. McCain spent years in the Hanoi Hilton as a POW. The presidents that usually start wars are the ones with no military service. They are all too aware of the cost of war. Obama has already stated he would go to war with Pakistan to get Osama. And Pakistan is one of our allies.
I believe that to be President ( or even a senator) you should have to meet qualifications- like have a degree in economics and politics, prior military service, drug screens, etc….
BTW, I still keep making LOL’s about Obama, yet they still almost never make it to the Vote page !? Curious………Check out my favorites.
There are qualifications to be President. It’s called the 22nd Amendment.
“Section 1. No person shall be elected to the office of the President more than twice, and no person who has held the office of President, or acted as President, for more than two years of a term to which some other person was elected President shall be elected to the office of the President more than once. But this article shall not apply to any person holding the office of President when this article was proposed by the Congress, and shall not prevent any person who may be holding the office of President, or acting as President, during the term within which this article becomes operative from holding the office of President or acting as President during the remainder of such term.
Section 2. This article shall be inoperative unless it shall have been ratified as an amendment to the Constitution by the legislatures of three-fourths of the several States within seven years from the date of its submission to the States by the Congress.”
A degree in politics, FCOL? That’s funny.
I don’t think the Republicans give a crap about that silly old Constitution thingie anymore.
I don’t think you’ve ever given a crap about that silly old truth thingie.
STFU.
Come see the crushing of dissent!
LOL!
You liberals are all the same. You can’t handle disagreement, everyone but you has to shut up. Too bad about that 1st Amendment thingie.
You got one thing right – a president with no military experience started this war. Oh right, he was in the military. I forgot.
Wasn’t it McCain who said, “We’re gonna bomb bomb bomb bomb bomb Iran?” Just curious.
My registered Conservative Irish Catholic retired military blue collar father in law is NOT voting for McCain. Speaks volumes to me. My brother in law, a lieutenant in the NYPD and former fire fighter, hunter, and military buff NOT voting for McCain. My sister, a Captain in the army, NOT voting for McCain. I dare you to call any of them Liberals.
I notice you say “not voting for McCain”, instead of saying they are voting for Obama ! And most of my family is in the military or just out- and the only one not voting for McCain is a lesbian…….
I wonder why people see ‘liberal’ as such an evil word, especially when the original menaing of liberalitas is generosity and nobleness … isn’t that something you would like to see in a leader?
Obama has already stated he would go to war with Pakistan to get Osama.
False, Obama said he would not tip-toe around Musharaf and tribal leaders for permission to bomb a target. We have killed Al quada leaders in this way and it is about the only way we can because the tribal leaders often tip off our enemies.
believe that to be President ( or even a senator) you should have to meet qualifications- like have a degree in economics and politics, prior military service, drug screens, etc
LoL, good luck with that.
BTW, I still keep making LOLโs about Obama, yet they still almost never make it to the Vote page !?
Probably because they are not funny enough; like this picture, this was not a funny picture.
So many comments have said ‘My caption didn’t make it..it’s a conspracy!’ LOL at them.
its funny to teh rest of teh world alright
We are winning in Iraq and I wouldn’t be surprised if we started pulling troops out by the time McCain takes office. The Iraqi military is now taking over more and more of the job of protecting their country from insurgents from outside of Iraq.
Who do you get your super secret alpha one info from? What about Afghanistan? Where the hell is Bin Laden? Yeah ema, we’re really winning this one.
Guess what? I think of every soldier my sister has had to sew back together and all those kids who are coming home broken with no government support and all those lives lost on BOTH sides, yeah, we really won, didn’t we?
Tell me, WHAT did we win? Think hard, you can play too, Evil Pundit….
Why is everyone so worried about Bin ladin??? What difference does it make where he is, he is of no danger to us in anyway. Probably dead and if not no use whatsoever to al-k-duh. He is probably in a cave somewhere but the minute he sticks his head out it will be shot off because there is a huge reward. Probably a lot worse than what would happen if Obama gave him habeus corpus rights. Believe me there are a lot worse people than Bin ladin out there – a lot of them have been killed – remember the Daniel Pearl video? Those types.
I do believe the lack of govt. support for our veterans is appalling though. It is the one thing I will concede.
“Why is everyone so worried about Bin ladin??? ”
Yeah, he’s just a sweet little old grandfather who never hurt anyone. Why’s everyone always picking on Bin ladin? Leave the poor man alone!
well, you know, they DID invade Afghanistan just to find the bugger, an entire war was started, a government toppled and continued hunting of this man and his goons. Just kinda hard to swallow that it was soooooo important to find this guy and now no one really cares about it anymore.
A “government” toppled? the taliban? if that’s what you want to call it, I’m sure plenty of women over there are glad we came when we did.
Also, you sound pretty angry, like your are personally angry at me and you keep mentioning Evil as well. Do we not have the right to express our opinions here? Do you want me to just shut up and go away? I happen to think one of the things that makes our country great is the dichotomy of two differing sides of the scales, I guess you can call it for lack of a better term right now. It seem to have kept us balanced in the long run compared to other countries where no one is allowed to say what they think. Although it can be painful and sometimes divisive I still think it is healthy.
“It seem to have kept us balanced in the long run compared to other countries where no one is allowed to say what they think. Although it can be painful and sometimes divisive I still think it is healthy.”
erm… you sure seem to know a hell of a lot about your country… which even censors more than Germany does nowadays
Yes, I forgot political correctnes… That seems to have shut quite a few people up.
Seeing as there are 65 comments already, someone has probably already said this, but if not:
He didn’t mean 100 or 1000 years of war, he meant a troop station. American troops are stationed all around the world, in places like Thailand, Germany, South Korea, France, and Japan. Are they fighting in those countries? No. They’re there for training, medical aid, and to be close if there is an emergency.
But, like others have said, politics is about taking saying and injecting them with your own meaning. This happened to be a good example because he wasn’t very thorough in his explanation for what he meant, so there were gaps that people could read into. Meanwhile, in similar debates and such, he probably said hundreds of other things that no one else cares about except the people at the debates, press conferences, etc.
Only those whom have actually been in war have the right to bitch. I’d rather serve under McCain than Obama and I hate both
There hasn’t been a time when we weren’t at war. Ya’ll seem to forget about the conflicts Clinton got us into. Bosnia was way worse than Iraq ever will be.
Yes, because the Bosnia conflict killed almost 5000 American troops, hundreds of thousands of Bosnians/Croats/Serbs, and cost several trillion dollars, right?
Oh wait…
Why only 1,000 years? Why not 10,000 years?
On a decidedly non political note, does this lol remind anyone of Montana Max from Hellsing?
Oh dear god no!
