    rofl

bunch of morons hahahahaha.. btw thats south america.

  2. Evil Pundit says:

These must be the dumbest people in all 57 states … or 58? Maybe I left out a couple.

  3. Dom says:

Might they be protesting about Amish? They could call the religion Amnety, and the Amish refer to everybody else as English…

  4. The Revisionist says:

    News flash people:
Humanity is equally stupid across the planet. We here in the States don’t have the monopoly on self absorbed, loud, obnoxious morons, despite what you might think. Go to a Football game in England, try to get a cup of coffee in Hong Kong, Drive in Japan, or attempt to catch a Train in Deli, and you will realize stupid is stupid no matter where you go.

    • kmn4 says:

No monopoly, but we sure do seem to have a higher percentage per capita! Then again, there’s that whole “Running of the Bulls” thing…but that’s only once a year.

      (And I think you’re looking for Delhi, not Deli… :) )

    • Jenny says:

I don’t know about that. Sure, there are stupid people everywhere, but, in my travels, I’ve never encountered people who are as arrogant, wasteful, and just plain dumb.

      • ema says:

Then you can happily stay away.

        • kk says:

Agreed, I am moving to Sweden this Summer, I can no longer handle the idiocy of America.

        • 6262 says:

“The whole problem with the world is that fools and fanatics are always so certain of themselves, but wiser people so full of doubts”. Bertrand Russell
I’ve met stupid people from diffrent countries, but almost all were modest and knew their limits whilst the americans were always arrogant like Bertrand Russell says.

            “The best lack all conviction

            I think that’s Keats.

As the saying goes, don’t let the door hit you in the on the way out. Thank-you, come again…

And having been to France myself, I have to disagree with you. STRONGLY.

        • Eric says:

Nice, mods – I didn’t even SAY the word and you censor me? Deliberately AVOIDED saying anything censorable and you cut stuff out of my post – so that it look like I can’t write, to boot? Come on…

Should I have just put “@$$” there, instead of typing out a semi-amusing and not-at-all-profane circumlocution? If you’re going to cut something from someone’s post, particularly something that doesn’t NEED to be cut since it wasn’t IN ANY WAY worthy of it, perhaps you ought to put in, say, an ellipsis?

          Edit=FAIL. :(

    • GomerPhyls says:

I wouldn’t say that it’s an equal distribution… I mean, here’s a perfect example of disproportionate distribution of stupid:

      By religion:

      By teen pregnancy rates:

      By education:

      • Anon says:

Is the teen pregnancy rate chart by percentage? Omg those figures are freaking high!

        • boom says:

surely those teen pregnancy rates are made up. 65%??? JEEBUS!

          • Cas says:

yes but they include 18 and 19 year olds also so while they are technically still teens, they are also legal adults. If they are 18 or 19, working, or married or self dependant then I don’t see a problem if they want to or even accidently got pregnant. teens who are still in highschool are a whole different matter.

      • MikeA says:

Interesting that the teen pregnancy is highest in those states that are strongly Republican and promoting abstinence

      • Logan says:

Do you have any examples from other countries? When the argument is that stupidity exists globally, and all you do is prove that America has stupid people, you’re not proving much. You’ve been charged with proving that the rest of the world has -less- stupid people than us.

    • Lu says:

      That’s Delhi, genius.
      American Fail.
      As usual.

  5. kmn4 says:

This is just begging to be posted on failblog…

  6. TheMan says:

I don’t get it…. Don’t these people realise that their ancestors came over from another country? So protesting foreigners means they need to kick themselves out.

    • ema says:

Nobody is protesting foreigners. If there is not a global language that all of us speak in the US then the country will be officailly over. It would split and become more divisive (if you can imagine that), then they would start wanting to split off and make their own countries. It would help if they would try to spell their signs correctly though…

      • Komadori says:

Tell that to the legal spanish-speaking Texans and Californians. Oh, and by the way, tell that to the French-speaking Creole and Cajuns down in Louisiana. Let’s not forget that most of the West was once part of Mexico (and before then, some of it was part of the Aztec Empire).

Yes, speaking English in the US will get you farther than speaking a foreign language only. But it doesn’t mean people aren’t willing to learn.

And as for who has a right to be where… well, I agree with the above poster above this one.

Oh, and it’s pretty bloody on the other side of the border, did you know? Yet it’s never reported about in most US media. Over 9K people killed this past year alone, if memory serves.

I’m not saying open the flood gates. But something other than ignoring it or building a massive fence needs to be done.

        • ema says:

Umm, I live on the border and speak Spanish AND English. There is nothing wrong with speaking one, two or more languages, it is preferred. As far as something being done on the OTHER side of the border pressure needs to be placed on the corrupt and horrible Mexican government to take care of it’s people, 90% of whom are indigenous. I have spent a lot of time over there and those people are lovely and are being more than miss treated by those Spaniards in power. Why blame the US for EVERYTHING!! It’s getting more than trifling.

      • Jane says:

The country will officially be over? Speaking French and English must be why Canada doesn’t exist anymore then.

        • kk says:

LOL! … I think you just ruined ema’s argument ;)

        • ema says:

Why does no one understand what I am saying? I said A UNIVERSAL language is necessary for a cohesive and united country. Other languages add flavor. Did I hear recently that there was some talk of the French speaking part of Canada succeeding? That is what I am talking about.

          • IPG says:

Succeeding with what? With seceding? ;o)

But seriously, AFAIK Spanish is an official language in Florida, ever since the Spanish left, so establishing one official language would be a thogh call.

In any case I don’t see the point. Stuff is working rather nicely and despite George Bush occasionally butchering Spanish I don’t expect to hear a State of the Union in any other language than English any time soon.

            • ema says:

English is a very difficult language to speak, I realize that I don’t speak it all that well. But, it is the language most people speak and it should be required to learn for all citizens. I don’t see anything wrong with that…

              • markmier says:

I think we should all speak Esperanto. It’s the universal language.

*note: I do not actually think we should all speak Esperanto.

              • Shu says:

english it’s quite easy to learn and speack. It has lesser phonemes, verbal
tenses and don’t require the usa of what we BR call “acentos” (á,ô)

                • nettie says:

Unless you speak a non-European language. It’s very very confusing if your native language is Chinese, Korean, Japanese, and probably a bunch of other Asianand Middle Eastern and African languages with a completely different structure.

I started to learn Cantonese because my in-laws are Chinese and Grandpa *gasp* doesn’t speak much English. I gave up because it just doesn’t make sense to me. I know basic phrases, but that’s it.

My MIL has been here for 45 years now and still has a lot of trouble with aspects of the English language that just don’t have an equivalent in Cantonese. She mixes up genders (he for she, etc) because there is no gender specific words. She mixes up plurals because there are no plural forms of words. She can’t always conjugate verbs because verbs never change in Cantonese. And these are just basic examples.

So, no, it’s not so easy to learn English.

          • Rissa says:

The Quebequois are ALWAYS talkign about seceding, but since they are pretty much landlocked and have no real exports… let’s just say the rest of Canada regularly calls their bluff

            • Meh says:

Austria, the Czech Republic, Hungary, and Switzerland are all landlocked, among others, and those four in particular are surviving… I can’t say much for Ethiopia, which is also landlocked…

              • Jane says:

It’s not just that it’s landlocked, it’s that it will be completely surrounded by the rest of Canada, which is not the case for the countries you mentioned. It is, however, the case for Lesotho and Swaziland, both of which are completely surrounded by South Africa. I have no concrete data as to those two countries are doing however. It’s not really relevant to the point that Canada manages to stumble along quite well despite having two national languages. The fact that Quebec makes noises about seceding every couple of years or so is only based in part on language issues. It actually somewhat helps my point, the rest of Canada doesn’t care that most people in Quebec speak French, they want to keep them in the country anyway.

            • Jane says:

Not to mention that the rest of Canada routinely learns French in school and even provinces as far away as the Yukon and Northwest Territories have signs and things printed in French and English. As far as I know, no one has ever accused Canada of not being cohesive or united.

          • DeathWyrmNexus says:

I actually agree with you on this. The French speak French, the Germans speak German, etc etc. Why should we have such a fuss over a universal language for the country?

We speak English as the majority. Hell I wouldn’t move to France without learning French. Why do people expect us to bend just because they come here? Yes, multiple languages are healthy for a person to learn but I shouldn’t have to pick up another language to order food. -_-

      • Mark says:

Switzerland has 4 national languages, they seem to be holding together.

        • DeathWyrmNexus says:

Switzerland also has been in the business of being Neutral for as long as any of us remember and thus depend on their mastery of language to be expert diplomats and stay out of wars. Hell, if I was a small country surrounded like that, I would bone up my languages too. Gives an edge if you know how to say “We aren’t your enemy” in the tongue of your neighbors.

      • Whitepantheress says:

In Australia, while we prefer people to know English to an at least a rudimentary
level, many people speak many different languages, and practise a variety of spiritual beliefs.

Despite what a small percentage of the population who rant about us being “over-run by Asians and Muslims”, we have a generally cohesive and diverse social environment. What I have found is that ignorant people making newcomers feel isolated and unwelcome is what causes a divisive society, not the fact that people speak different languages.

Time and time again I see new Aussies reaching out to those of us who have been here longer for support and inclusion in our society, and 9 times out of 10, they are welcome. When they aren’t it’s only due to the bigots being nasty and shallow. Taking a few extra minutes to explain something a little slower can mean heaps to someone learning the language.

At any rate, perhaps you should have a think about why you feel so threatened by people you feel you have nothing in common with. you may leartn something. Let me assure you that they are just trying to live their lives with their families, work and make friends, just like you. They are not planning your demise, and I think it is sad that you are so insecure that you think that.

  7. Joe says:

I get it, the amnety sign is in another language and if you honk they’ll switch to english.

  8. Charp says:

These people aren’t bad at English, they’re just practicing Lolspeak.

    • Otis McFunkelberg von Bayern says:

      • Kit says:

But perhaps it’s not their fault… as you can see, they are being lead by a little girl, and an old woman who may be suffering from senior moments.

    • Hyla's Brook says:

Please! Do not try to dignify the ignorance of these zenophobes by claiming they are using lolspeak! They want English to be the “official” language but are too stupid to speak/spell/or write it properly.

I agree with other posters – there are many successful multi-lingual countries — India, for example, has a half dozen ‘official’ languages.

What’s saddest is that American children do not get a chance to learn Spanish and French which would allow them to learn so much more about other cultures. Americans are too isolated in their English only world! It’s great to go to Europe and be able to function reasonably well using the native languages there.

      • nettie says:

Agreed! I was almost completely useless in Europe with only my basic HS French, but my Husband, having grown up with Chinese around him and then learning Spanish almost fluently, he was able to pick up Italian in a week. It was amazing! Americans should learn more than one language! I really wish I had.

      • Capptola says:

Actually, the most sad circumstance is the fact that we aren’t even teaching children english in school these days. Pheonetics has gone the way of the Dodo bird, and Ebonics is being taught in many school systems.

Remember folks… Spell it like it sounds is not just Lolspeak, it’s the way our kids are being taught.

        • Dani says:

I’m originally from Chile, raised in Miami….

Lets just say that American children don’t learn much geography either…

A guy in high school asked me where I was from. I said Chile. He asked “what part of Mexico is that?”

          I proceeded to walk away….

          • Jane says:

When I tell people that as a child I lived in Alaska, even adults will ask me if I lived in an igloo. It’s sad.

        • Jane says:

Do you mean phonics? Or phonemic awareness? Or possibly phonetics? All three of those mean using sounds and sound chunks to decipher unknown words and they are all a significant part of any primary teacher’s reading instruction. Besides helping to read unknown words phonics instruction encourages children to spell words the way they sound, not the lack of phonics instruction. Using invented spelling is not the downfall of civilization but a useful tool that encourages students to recognize and experiment with word patterns which in turn makes them better readers and writers. If you’re really looking for something to blame a decline in spelling ability on, blame computers with spell check, not hardworking elementary school teachers (of which I am one).

  9. yobimbo says:

Do they have to put on white robes with hoods for you to understand what’s going on?

  10. Ryan says:

Ema I think you are half right. Say for example in CA, NM, and AZ 95% of the population is native Spanish speakers (not foreign born though) and 40% of people spoke conversational English. Yeah, it is really easy to see how they could want to become their own country and probably secede in that scenario.

This is a silly thing to worry about because I can not see how it could ever evolve to this point. It seems to me that people just often assume that large, linguistically distinct regions are an inevitable result of no official language. The reality is it just means California prints their ballots in 8 different languages and customer service people occasionally have to communicate with a non-english speaker. Yawn.

  11. ema says:

There has to be a common language bonding us all together as a country, how will we be able to communicate with each other? How would we be able to have this conversation right here? Let’s not hate each other anymore.

    • IPG says:

I thought the bonding together was done by flagpins and ‘patriotic’ bumper stickers. Oh… and hating ferriners… and terrrists.

Honestly, who cares? You cannot dictate what language people speak, even if you have an official language. If you look at Europe it seems to be the countries with a strict homgenous majority culture such as France and Germany that do not succeed teaching minorities the official language and thus have the biggest problems integrating newcomers. By comparison the integration of native Spanish speakers here is a breze. Most second generation hispanics speak awful Spanish and are clearly native English speakers. Also, they do pretty well in terms of educational attainment, compared to other (non-Asian) minorities.

Re your comment below: where I live bilingual education is most in demand with white households and it works quite nicely.

  12. chienduciel says:

Countries with more than one language spoken by its citizens tend to put more emphasis on multilingual education. We are about the only country in the world that does not teach, from a young age, it’s youth a second language. We would still be able to communicate, we would have two common languages instead of one.

    • ema says:

multilingual education is costly and fails quite often, what is the point of having two official languages. there would always be someone that wanted more than two, then there would be 3, then 4… people always speak their mother tongue in the home but outside with the rest of the country could communicate.

      • Atalantaeia says:

Sweetie, are you missing the part about “the US is one of the very few countries that does not regularly teach a secondary language”? Look at all the other countries around the world – do their governments seem to be crumbling in chaos from the strain of providing so much extra education? (Any moreso than the US, anyway?) Face it – English is the world trade language, like Latin in its time. Those parts of the world that want to trade internationally learn English, which, in many cases, is WHY all those other countries are teaching more than one language. So we’re in no danger of ending up a Spanish-, or German-, or French-speaking nation. We’re not hurting now from not having an official main language, and we won’t be hurting later from it.

And besides…we don’t even speak English…you ever thought of that? Go to England and see how many people understand you there. If you want to make ‘English’ the official language, we’d have to teach a 2nd language in schools, anyway. We speak American, which is an amalgamation of every language ever created pretty much. So get off your high horse.

      • BAW says:

Switzerland manages quite nicely with four (French, German, Italian, and Romanish).

  16. Jessi says:

Well…if we make English the ‘offical’ language…can we throw that lady out of the country? I think everyone could agree that’s a fair trade

  17. Maggie says:

Funny how people call Americans stupid, yet it’s the greatest country in the world. I’d say the Yanks are having the last laugh.

    • Rookie says:

What makes America the greatest country in the world? What’s your idea of ‘great’?

    • Hyla's Brook says:

Great as in an infant mortality rate that is one of the lowest in the industrialized world? Great for a lasting legacy of racism (which blacks can’t complain about lest they be labelled “angry” or “crazy?”) Great for not being able to elect a woman president yet, even though Britain, Ireland, Iceland, and Norway have done so?

Great for having 20% of the population without health insurance? Great for being the only country besides Taiwan that doesn’t use the metric system?

I think “big”, “immature”, “accustomed to throwing its weight around” is a better description of the USA.

      • nettie says:

I mostly agree with you…but I like my inches, feet, and yards, damn it!

        • Apersondude1 says:

Meh, my chemistry class requires the metric system. Using a converter isn’t the hardest thing in the world. I really don’t care either way though

      • Jane says:

Don’t forget Pakistan had a female prime minister before us too! If that’s not irony I don’t know what is.

        • BAW says:

And look what happened to her!

          • Jane says:

Well yes, that is a point. But in fairness she wasn’t assasinated when she was prime minister the first time, and this time around it did look like she would win…

All the more reason for the U.S. to have had a female president by now, we like to pride ourselves on our pull yourself up by your bootstraps, land of the free, equality for all mentality.

            • boom says:

last time i tried to pull myself up by my bootstraps i landed on my arse.

Funny how everyone knocks America, the hate is universal.
But at the same time everyone wants to live here…go figure.
We’re the worst…but face it, deep down you KNOW we’re the best.
That’s why we’re sure of ourselves…we know it, and we also know deep down you know it too. Nice try. Get invaded who are you going to call? Hmm? France? Good luck! Get a natural disaster, who will be there first and most? Us dumb Americans. Get over it. America > rest of world. End of story.

    • Cialis says:

I disagree, although we are the first ones to help in times of need. We need the rest of the world to live day to day. Last time I checked, America was going quite a lot more importing rather then exporting. Plus medical innovations and studies are more encouraged elsewhere. If successful, some are then used in the United States. To say America is greater than the rest of the world I believe you are insinuating that the United States does not need the help of anyone to continue to prosper the way it does. And i think you are mistaken.

    • Alex says:

Well well well, mr. American, let’s take a look in history. The American Revolutionary War (1775–1783) was a war between the Kingdom of Great Britain and thirteen British colonies on the North American continent. Still folowing? Great!

Now Britain had both the greatest economic and military power; the American realizing this, called upon other West-European countries in order to help them defeat/wear-off the British. These countries included: Spain, Netherlands and … FRANCE.

The British still had a dominant navy, which controlled the import of resources and the transport of troops by the Americans. It was the FRENCH navy who destroyed the British fleet, and transported troops, so that the Americans could claim victory and independence.

It is thanks to France that America exists. The American arrogance, ignorance and unthankfullness makes the world change it’s visions upon you. We’ve had enough of America’s ungratefullnes.

It is because of people like YOU, sir, the rest of the world hates America, Mr. Patriot!

  19. Zen says:

This country is going to be Northern Mexico in no time. Los Angeles all ready looks like a 3rd world country

  20. Debbie says:

Why is it that people who can’t write English are the ones who are opposed to other languages?

  21. RPO says:

Really? A third world? Lets not exaggerate. Mexico isnt even a third world country. So If people from Mexico are coming to California, it wouldn’t be third world. Dont be stupid.

  22. david pasquinelli says:

all of you are wrong. the correct response is lol.

  23. david says:

Okay, let’s say that America’s official language is now English… What exactly changed? Would the english curriculum at school change? become more rigorous? by the looks of it, the standard american couldn’t make use of a harsher curriculum. We’d still be speaking english at about the same frequency as before. I think the only differences are that schools would have a reason to cut funding from their foreign language division (which would do nothing for our already miserable system for teaching spanish, french, german, russian…) and we could put a pretty little sticker next to english saying it’s somehow most intrinsically more important than all the other languages. I took 4 years of spanish in grade school, never spoke it outside the classroom, and none of it stuck. There were others in my classes that didn’t even go to spain or mexico, just a part of the US that was heavily spanish speaking, and they had it nailed in a matter of weeks. Immersion into other cultures is all important… much more important than fearing for the unity of our nation over something as meaningless as changing a label. English is now the official language of the US. Whoopdeedoo.

  24. Logan says:

When I order a sandwich, I want to order it in the language I’ve been using my entire life, and I want to be understood. I don’t want to give my child something he’s allergic to because the guy behind the counter doesn’t understand me, and I don’t want to use my time to learn the language that’s being forced down my throat by sheer numerical superiority. I want to use my time to play with my child, relax with my wife, and work to support them both.

If I were to move to France, I would first learn to speak fluent French. Notice that the person who claimed to be moving to Sweden spoke their language?

This is a problem. It’s massive. It’s doing damage. It needs fixed. Does that opinion mean I think less of Mexicans or immigrants, legal or otherwise? No. It just means that I think they need to be better assimilated, with some sort of official plan. I think the immigration test, (and everything else in writing in this country) should be in English. A country that can’t communicate within its own borders can’t function. In all of the examples of multi-lingual countries given here, the vast majority of citizens speak both languages. Everyone should be forced to learn at least one language universally. They can speak any language they like. I don’t care if they go their whole lives without uttering a word of English. But they need to be able to understand ME when I say, “My son is allergic to peanuts.”

You’re all acting like a bunch of bigoted fools, claiming to be superior to a group of people based on the spelling of a protest sign. And you call my countrymen ignorant. At least they’ll listen to you disagreeing with them. They’ll stop and help you change your tire in the rain. They’ll send their sons and brothers to defend your country from invasion. Don’t make this an Iraq thing. That’s not what I’m talking about. I’m talking about the World Wars. Desert Storm, Afghanistan, etc. You can claim that we haven’t had a justified war in a while, but there’s no doubt that if your country were invaded tomorrow, America would be backing you up with guns, money, or troops. Or all three. You all need to remember that you’re talking about people. Not some fictional character on the internet. You’re seething with hatred towards real people. People you’ve never met. That’s the worst ignorance of all. I submit that YOU all are ’stupid.’

p.s. I’ve always hated the whole, ‘If you don’t like my country then get out,’ attitude. It’s dumb. Because it’s not -their- country. It’s ours. Us and them. Those of you saying you want to leave because you hate the rest of us, fine. I won’t stop you. But consider this; If all those wishing for change move away, how will anything change? You can’t fix it from Europe.
