No.. It was NOT photoshopped. I know… I took the pic. It was taken a day or two before the store opened… which is why you don’t really see any of the store in the pic. I cropped it out for the humor value. My guess is they were testing the sign and put up the ridiculous amount to keep people from trying to pull in and bother them while they were finishing the store.

Gas stations make money off of inside sales not gas. The gas is just a means of getting you to the station in the hopes of you buying something like fountain pop (soda) or coffee. Both of those have extremely high profit margins.

Do you not even read the comments before you post? Only the bottom one is cigarettes. If the price has the 9/10 after it, it’s gas. Although I think ABNormal is probably right in that they were resetting the computer.

I agree, that would awesome! The problem is that we all want the benefits without the cost. If you want good public transportation, you’ve got to get your city/regional/state/federal transportation decision-makers to choose wisely, then get out your checkbook. Expensive gas prices isn’t the worst thing–development standards that leave no choice but driving are killing us. And if only we all agreed to pay 14% sales tax, all the middle-class citizens paid 25-42% income taxes, and the people who choose to drive everywhere fund the care of roads and transportation infrastructure through gas taxes so that everyone in the country could have healthcare, go to college for free, and have access to great public transportation…that would be great! No country’s perfect, but Germany’s doin sumthin rite.

If we had access to a public transportation system here in the midwest like much of Europe enjoys it would make me a happy girl. Not only would it be cheaper but it would be better for the environment. With all our technological advances we as a society create things like viagra and the iphone, but we have yet to come up with a clean and inexpensive alternate fuel source.

$9.999 for gas but only $9.99 for a carton of Marlboro’s? Seriously. If that’s the going price, this station owner’s on crack 24/7. Looks like a computer being re-set. They always default to all 9’s when re-booting a numeric display like these.

Actually, this actually briefly happened to Germany shortly before the jump from D-Mark to Euro; some really old stations that still had analog displays were limited to displaying 1.99 DM/liter (5.95 USD/gallon)—and the rule is that you may only sell at the price that is advertised.

This is not accurate information. With fairly inexpensive retrofits, the prices can be adjusted to go up to 9.99. Depending on the type of gasoline dispensers the stations own and the mechanical ability of the owners (or the price the service technicians charge in their area), this can be done with either new gears that go inside the the computers installed in the dispensers or with new (remanufactured) computers. The gears can be as cheap as $15/set, the computers (which compute the amount of fuel) can be up to $300/each.

The real squeeze is that the independent stations are at the mercy of their suppliers – they make just a few cents a gallon, and as prices increase, they sell less fuel.

Also, environmental laws can require the complete replacement of gas station equipment – the major oils can afford to do this, but the small Mom & Pop stations don’t have the capital to upgrade.

No, only the bottom one is a cigarette price. Notice the tiny 9 after 9.99 in the top two. This is the 9/10 of a cent we get charged despite the fact that we have no form of money that is smaller than a penny. If I were to pump one gallon of gas I could not get my 1/10 of a cent back in change. Also, where in the freaking hell are they charging ten dollars for gas?! I can haz alrunet fewl sorse? (And no, ethonol doesn’t count, it uses as much petrolium to process it that we don’t save anything)

No such luck! I saw a news story a week or so ago about a couple of long-established gas stations in Virginia that are going to have to go out of business, because their old gas pumps only go up to $3.99, and the stations don’t have enough capital to replace them with ones that register higher prices.
