This is *really* crass. There is ZILCH about this photo that implies he’s a terrorist – no AK47, no nothing. There’s nothing saying this dude isn’t totally peaceful… he’s even smiling! All it does is perpetrate negative stereotypes.
Not funny. Disturbing. As a white guy, *I* am insulted. Gee, I wonder why our cultures just fight and can’t understand one another…
An AK47 is not indicative of being a terrorist. If someone needs any other reminders as to who this guy is, they should be ashamed of themselves — the face alone should be enough.
I’m also not sure how this perpetrates NEGATIVE stereotypes. If he’s smiling and there’s nothing to imply he harbors malicious intentions, then that makes him a guy who is grinning, with a (funny) LOL pasted on top. If you want an AK47 in the picture, YOU would be the one perpetrating negative stereotypes — recall the one about all Arabs being terrorists?

You know, at first I thought I was suffering deja vu when I read that Shad didn’t recognize the person in this photo and then I remembered an incident from my college days…
Our student newspaper printed a syndicated editorial cartoon of Osama Bin Laden sitting in a cave with an AK47 talking about Homeland Security. The cartoon in no way identified OBL, but it was a REALLY obvious caricature of him (I’d provide the image, but I can’t find it anywhere on the net).
So, a couple of beyond liberal, far, FAR, left-leaning pinko professors saw the cartoon and made a big stink about how they were offended by how this Arab cleric had been drawn so stereotypically with a big hooked-nose, turban and AK47.
The Editor in Chief at the time printed a double-truck spread of all the comments left online along with a reprint of the cartoon and a response from the staff.
It’s a pretty hilarious read (since there’s no accompanying image, just imagine the most obvious caricature of OBL you can):

We found out later that only 2 of the outraged professors had actually seen the cartoon and the others had just received a description and followed blindly in their outrage.
