Even longer change in time...I'm bored and looked at old pics.

Being a student, I hate NCLB. Like you said, it's great on paper, but when you get down to it, all the standardized testing only makes it worse.

"[kids] whose parents don’t work with them at home, don’t make them study, and blame the teacher because they don’t 'teach' "
^ That makes my blood boil and makes me thankful that my parents fall under none of those categories.

Sad but true, NCLB is more like No Child Moves Ahead. And I should know, because I was in elementary school when that was passed. As a "gifted kid," I was never challenged enough because of the NCLB thing . . . and it was really annoying. :(

I read it, Jane. My mom's a teacher too, and there's no denying that NCLB is a great idea with atrocious execution.

No, you are not wrong, but neither are you right. The idea of NCLB started with the Clintons, this is true. It actually sounds like a great idea. Every child reading on grade level. What person would actually say, no, I don't think that's necessary. The problems with NCLB begin with the Bush administration and come from inadequate funding, unclear guidelines, and impossible goals. Schools are in essence held hostage, don't make ayp and lose your funding. Accountablity is the great buzz word, and as a teacher I know that every job needs accountability, however NCLB places all blame on the teacher. Some states have even proposed laws that would make a teacher's pay dependent on their students' test scores. NCLB does not allow for the difficulties teachers face when they teach all children. Broken homes, abused children, foreign language speakers, special needs, to say nothing of children who seem to have all advantages, but whose parents don't work with them at home, don't make them study, and blame the teacher because they don't "teach". NCLB under Bush has increased standardized testing in our schools, causing many schools to drop non-essential subjects like music, art, gym, recess, social studies. Schools have not received the funding that was promised them and the pressure is so great that the majority of new teachers leave the field after the first three years. Being a teacher myself, I could go on and on about the horror that is NCLB in your average public school, but this post is long enough for an old picture no one is going to read.
