here’s what I don’t get. Obama is supposed to be “post-racial.” He’s above the fray, beyond all the race-baiting and petty stuff, right? So why do his supporters continue to bring up the stuff that he says doesn’t matter anymore?
and who knows - maybe the captioneer here was referring to the several surgical scars the Veep wears. having all of your charm removed is a highly invasive procedure.
Charm? No; the procedure was to remove his soul and conscience; all his charm and charisma had to be excised in order to make room for the planned removal.

Why do Hillary’s supporters keep claiming he’s an affirmative action hire? Remember Geraldine?
Also this “post-racial” stuff, he’s the only one that has talked about race at more than a superficial level. Race and the history of racial injustice are serious issues and need to be discussed. Just like the gender stuff Hillary is totally ignoring while her surrogates talk it up.
That’s the kicker, isn’t it? No sarcasm here, nothing about the candidates.
There is no excuse for that part of America’s (and the world’s) past. We cannot and must not forget that it happened - but at some point, we have to put a stake in the ground and say, “Now what?”
The problem is that there are too many people, of all races, who profit from keeping the divide open. And there are too many who are willing to follow and not willing to lay down grudges and deep-seated hatred because of things in the past.
My grandfather’s store had a cross burned in the front yard because he refused to discriminate among his clientelle. My family tree includes names of people who were leaders in the fight to end slavery in this country.
I know that doesn’t equate to the pain and humiliation of slavery. It just speaks to the fact that there are some of us who have spent generations trying to make it right, or at least make it better, or at least make it more equitable for everyone.
But I am painted with the same brush as my neighbor, who still has that so-called rebel battle flag on his truck, and still thinks the guy up the block doesn’t belong in ‘his’ neighborhood.
I’m sick of it.
I’m sick of people thinking that skin color is a reason to feel pride or be belittled.
There are idiots and geniuses of every race.
And the idiots tend to be the ones who work to keep us all apart.
Guess I’d better quit commenting for a while - my boss seems to think this isn’t why he pays me.
Your grandpa sold things to black people so we shouldn’t talk about the issues of race in order to offset the idiots? C’mon, you know that’s a weak answer.
The point is that we need to actually discuss the legacies and perpetuation of racialized systems of control in America. That’s cool that your great, great-grandpa ran with Garrison, but as your grandpa could have told you, ending slavery was not the end of things. The issues still exist, and the knee-jerk white liberal response of “But I’m not a racist, I don’t see race” while still living within and often ignoring the legacies of race is a problem. America has been pretending that race isn’t a issue and calling those who say it’s an issue “divisive” since the reconstruction, and all it’s done is allowed racialized structures of power to remain in place, and chipping a chunk of of it every time tensions flare up to the pint they can’t be ignored. The structures, cultures, and mentalities themselves haven’t been dealt with, just little attempts to make things better. So don’t get too busy patting yourself on the back on that.
So maybe you should try to actually think about how these structures work, what place you have within those structures, and how we can actually confront them instead of hiding under your grandpas actions. Or you can keep running off the same Bill O’reilly points about how the only racists left in the world are Jesse Jackson and Al Sharpton.
Maybe you don’t know this but, believe it or not, there ARE people in the world who truly don’t care about another person’s skin color. Yes, racism is a horrible thing that we should overcome as much as possible, but just like how true world peace will never be accomplished and there will never be a complete end to world hunger, we will NEVER have a perfect world where there is no racism. Why bother “talking” about racism when that’s just going to spark more racism and false assumptions. Right now it’s probably more important to solve issues like, say, the fact that we’re constantly destroying our planet by greatly speeding up global warming, instead of complaining over some stupid and slightly racist caption that was just supposed to be funny. Way to kill the joke.
