Thank you for posting this. Sherman was a terrible person. My great great grandfather was Wade Hampton III, and my family still owns land where Millwood was.(PS. he only burned it to the ground because he had a crush on Sally Hampton)
Wow your great great grandfather committed treason congrats!!!! How dare you say anything negative towards Sherman, I hope you live in shame for your whole life with the realization that your family contributed to the death of countless men loyal to the United States of America. Sherman was a great man, and should be respected as such; your great great grandfather should have been hung with all the other southern military leaders. Serioulsy if you have any respect for your ancestor you should just do us all a favor and leave this great country
Dear American Patriot12,
Who someone’s ancestors were does not necessarily have any effect on who THEY are. Sarah does not need to “live in shame for her whole life” because of someone long dead who HAPPENS to be on her(?) family tree, nor should Sarah “do us all a favor and leave this great country” for having respect for, well, anyone. It’s a free country, and that’s the main reason it IS so “great”.
So you really DON’T know history. Sherman was actually VERY anti-war, however, he thought that if war was waged that a quick and devastating attack would ultimately save more lives. If you know any History you will understand that the Civil War would have gone on for many more years with many many more deaths had Sherman not used the tactic he did. His whole idea was based on showing the opponent how utterly incapable they were of winning and thus he would be victorius. Pick up a book and read.
Yes, he wanted the war with the south to be over, so he could go out west and kill him some Indians. Cause he was an Ass. Not that the south didn’t ask for it.
Well… Sherman BEAT his opponents… I think the similarity ends there!
have to admit, I appreciate this picture! I have this on my wall!!
This idea of “firing” the enemy did not begin with Sherman. In the “Art of War” it states,”if your enemy goes to ground, leave him no groud to go to” written by Sun Tzu in the 6th century, required reading at both West Point and VMI.
By the way, the arm band shown in the portrait is a sign of mourning the death of Mr. Lincoln.

(of the Virginia Lees)
Dina, you are obviously a history nerd of epic proportions…
In other words…I <3 you!!
Yeah!!!
Ill make a band called Shermans Wall and dedicate a song to Dina!
And I <3 Dina now too.
History is important.
Yeah, <3 Dina thirded
Seriously, history is a lot more important than most school administrations want to admit. Did you know that more American children recognize Ronald McDonald than George Washington? Sad. Seriously sad.
Since when have the concepts of “war” and “fair” been associated with each other? Isn’t the only “fair” way to win a war to maximize damage to the enemy’s ability to wage war, thus minimizing your own losses. The only people you care about being fair to are your own troops. I mean, come on, your at WAR with the other guys.
P.S. If we fought our wars “fair”, we would still be part of England.
P.P.S. I actually thought the LOL was great, just couldn’t resist the comments.
Army of the Republic FTW!
P0W3NED UR REBL ASS! LAWLS!
Sorry, couldn’t resist.
I wasn’t aware that war was meant to be fair…
DAMN STRAIGHT! There’s no place for mercy or morality in wars!
